14וַיְהִ֞יvay.HiH1961When the kingמֶֽלֶךְ־Me.lekh-H4428of Aiהָעַ֗יha.'AiH5857sawכִּרְא֣וֹתkir.'otH7200the Israelites,he hurriedוַֽיְמַהֲר֡וּvay.ma.ha.RuH4116outוַיֵּצְא֣וּvai.ye.tze.'UH3318early in the morningוַיַּשְׁכִּ֡ימוּvai.yash.Ki.muH7925with the menאַנְשֵֽׁי־'an.shei-H582of the cityהָעִ֣ירha.'IrH5892ה֧וּאhu'H1931וְכָל־ve.kholH3605עַמּ֛וֹa.MoH5971to engageלִקְרַֽאת־lik.rat-H7122themיִ֠שְׂרָאֵלYis.ra.'elH3478in battleלַֽמִּלְחָמָ֞הla.mil.cha.MahH4421at an appointed placeלַמּוֹעֵ֖דla.mo.'EdH4150overlookingלִפְנֵ֣יlif.NeiH6440the Arabahהָֽעֲרָבָ֑הha.'a.ra.VahH6160.But heוְהוּא֙ve.Hu'H1931did notלֹ֣אlo'H3808knowיָדַ֔עya.Da'H3045thatכִּֽי־ki-H3588an ambushאֹרֵ֥ב'o.RevH693had been set up against himbehindמֵאַחֲרֵ֥יme.'a.cha.ReiH310the cityהָעִֽיר׃ha.'IrH5892.

15Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁ֥עַye.ho.Shu.a'H3091and allוְכָל־ve.kholH3605Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖לYis.ra.'ElH3478let themselves be beaten backוַיִּנָּֽגְע֛וּvai.yi.na.ge.'UH5060before themלִפְנֵיהֶ֑םlif.nei.HemH6440,and they fledוַיָּנֻ֖סוּvai.ya.Nu.suH5127towardדֶּ֥רֶךְDe.rekhH1870the wildernessהַמִּדְבָּֽר׃ha.mid.BarH4057.

16Then allכָּל־kol-H3605the menהָעָם֙ha.'AmH5971of AiH5892אֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834were summonedוַיִּזָּעֲק֗וּvai.yi.za.'a.KuH2199to pursue themלִרְדֹּ֖ף אַחֲרֵיהֶ֑םlir.Dof 'a.cha.rei.HemH7291 H310,and they followedוַֽיִּרְדְּפוּ֙ אַחֲרֵ֣יvai.yir.de.Fu 'a.cha.ReiH7291 H310Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַye.ho.Shu.a'H3091and were drawn awayוַיִּנָּתְק֖וּvai.yi.na.te.KuH5423fromמִן־min-H4480the cityהָעִֽיר׃ha.'IrH5892.

17Notוְלֹֽא־ve.lo'-H3808a manאִ֗ישׁ'IshH376was leftנִשְׁאַ֣רnish.'ArH7604in Aiבָּעַי֙ba.'AiH5857or BethelH1008whoאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834did notלֹֽא־lo'-H3808go outיָצְא֖וּya.tze.'UH3318afterאַחֲרֵ֣י'a.cha.ReiH310Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֑לYis.ra.'ElH3478,leavingוַיַּעַזְב֤וּvai.ya.'az.VuH5800אֶת־'et-H853the cityהָעִיר֙ha.'IrH5892wide openפְּתוּחָ֔הpe.tu.ChahH6605while they pursuedוַֽיִּרְדְּפ֖וּ אַחֲרֵ֥יvai.yir.de.Fu 'a.cha.ReiH7291 H310Israelיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ פYis.ra.'ElH3478.

18Then the LORDיְהוָ֜הYah.wehH3068saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559toאֶל־'el-H413Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁ֗עַye.ho.Shu.a'H3091, “Hold outנְ֠טֵהNe.tehH5186your battle lanceבַּכִּיד֤וֹןba.ki.DonH3591אֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834בְּיָֽדְךָ֙be.ya.de.KhaH3027towardאֶל־'el-H413Aiהָעַ֔יha.'AiH5857,forכִּ֥יkiH3588into your handבְיָדְךָ֖ve.ya.de.KhaH3027I will deliverאֶתְּנֶ֑נָּה'et.te.Ne.nahH5414the city.”So Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַye.ho.Shu.a'H3091held outוַיֵּ֧טvai.YetH5186his battle lanceבַּכִּיד֥וֹןba.ki.DonH3591אֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834בְּיָד֖וֹbe.ya.DoH3027towardאֶל־'el-H413Aiהָעִֽיר׃ha.'IrH5892,

20When the menאַנְשֵׁי֩'an.SheiH582of Aiהָעַ֨יha.'AiH5857turnedוַיִּפְנ֣וּvai.yif.NuH6437and lookedוַיִּרְא֗וּ וְהִנֵּ֨הvai.yir.'U ve.hi.NehH7200 H2009backאַחֲרֵיהֶ֜ם'a.cha.rei.HemH310,the smokeעֲשַׁ֤ן'a.ShanH6227of the cityהָעִיר֙ha.'IrH5892was risingעָלָ֜ה'a.LahH5927into the skyהַשָּׁמַ֔יְמָהha.sha.May.mahH8064.They could notוְלֹא־ הָיָ֨ה יָדַ֛יִםve.lo'- ha.Yah ya.Da.yimH3808 H1961 H3027escapeלָנ֖וּסla.NusH5127in any directionH2008,and the troopsוְהָעָם֙ve.ha.'AmH5971who had fledהַנָּ֣סha.NasH5127to the wildernessהַמִּדְבָּ֔רha.mid.BarH4057now turnedנֶהְפַּ֖ךְneh.PakhH2015againstאֶל־'el-H413their pursuersהָרוֹדֵֽף׃ha.ro.DefH7291.

21When Joshuaוִיהוֹשֻׁ֨עַvi.ho.Shu.a'H3091and allוְכָֽל־ve.kholH3605Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֜לYis.ra.'ElH3478sawרָא֗וּra.'UH7200thatכִּֽי־ki-H3588the men in ambushהָֽאֹרֵב֙ha.'o.RevH693אֶת־'et-H853had capturedלָכַ֤דla.KhadH3920the cityהָעִ֔ירha.'IrH5892and thatוְכִ֥יve.KhiH3588smokeעֲשַׁ֣ן'a.ShanH6227was rising fromעָלָ֖ה'a.LahH5927itהָעִ֑ירha.'IrH5892,they turned aroundוַיָּשֻׁ֕בוּvai.ya.Shu.vuH7725and struck downוַיַּכּ֖וּvai.ya.KuH5221אֶת־'et-H853the menאַנְשֵׁ֥י'an.SheiH582of Aiהָעָֽי׃ha.'AiH5857.

22Meanwhile, those in the ambushוְאֵ֨לֶּהve.'E.lehH428came outיָצְא֤וּya.tze.'UH3318ofמִן־min-H4480the cityהָעִיר֙ha.'IrH5892against themלִקְרָאתָ֔םlik.ra.TamH7122,and the men of Ai wereוַיִּֽהְי֤וּvai.yih.YuH1961trapped betweenבַּתָּ֔וֶךְba.Ta.vekhH8432the Israeliteלְיִשְׂרָאֵל֙le.Yis.ra.'ElH3478forcesאֵ֥לֶּה'E.lehH428onמִזֶּ֖הmi.ZehH2088both sidesוְאֵ֣לֶּה מִזֶּ֑הve.'E.leh mi.ZehH428 H2088.So Israel struck them downוַיַּכּ֣וּvai.ya.KuH5221אוֹתָ֔ם'o.TamH853untilעַד־'ad-H5704noבִּלְתִּ֥יbil.TiH1115survivorשָׂרִ֥ידsa.RidH8300or fugitiveוּפָלִֽיט׃u.fa.LitH6412remainedהִשְׁאִֽיר־hish.'ir-H7604.
