1But the sonsבְנֵֽי־ve.nei-H1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֛לYis.ra.'ElH3478actedH4603unfaithfullyוַיִּמְעֲל֧וּ מַ֖עַלvai.yim.'a.Lu Ma.'alH4603 H4604regarding the thingsבַּחֵ֑רֶםba.Che.remH2764designatedH2764forH2764destructionH2764,for Achanעָכָ֣ן'a.KhanH5912,the sonבֶּן־ben-H1121of Carmiכַּרְמִי֩kar.MiH3756,the sonבֶן־ven-H1121of Zabdiזַבְדִּ֨יzav.DiH2067,the sonבֶן־ven-H1121of Zerahזֶ֜רַחZe.rachH2226,from the tribeלְמַטֵּ֤הle.ma.TehH4294of Judahיְהוּדָה֙ye.hu.DahH3063,tookוַיִּקַּ֡חvai.yi.KachH3947someמִן־min-H4480of the designatedH2764thingsהַחֵ֔רֶםha.Che.remH2764;therefore the angerאַ֥ף'afH639of the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068burnedוַיִּֽחַר־vai.yi.char-H2734against the sonsבִּבְנֵ֥יbiv.NeiH1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃Yis.ra.'ElH3478.

2Now Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁ֨עַye.ho.Shu.a'H3091sentוַיִּשְׁלַח֩vai.yish.LachH7971menH376from Jerichoמִֽירִיח֗וֹmi.ri.ChoH3405to Aiהָעַ֞יha.'AiH5857,whichאֲשֶׁ֨ר'a.SherH834is nearעִם־'im-H5973Beth-avenH1007,eastמִקֶּ֣דֶםmi.Ke.demH6924of BethelH1008,and saidH559to them, “GoH5927upH5927and spyH7270outH7270the landהָאָ֑רֶץha.'A.retzH776.”So the menH376wentH5927upH5927and spiedH7270outH7270Aiהָעָֽי׃ha.'AiH5857.

3Then they returnedוַיָּשֻׁ֣בוּvai.ya.Shu.vuH7725to Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁ֗עַye.ho.Shu.a'H3091and saidוַיֹּאמְר֣וּvai.yo.me.RuH559to him, “Do not have allכָּל־kol-H3605the peopleהָעָם֒ha.'AmH5971goיַ֣עַלYa.'alH5927upH5927; have onlyabout two orא֚וֹ'oH176threeכִּשְׁלֹ֣שֶׁתkish.Lo.shetH7969thousandH505menH376goיַעֲל֖וּya.'a.LuH5927upH5927and attackוְיַכּ֣וּve.ya.KuH5221Aiהָעָ֑יha.'AiH5857;do not troubleתְּיַגַּע־te.ya.ga'-H3021allכָּל־kol-H3605the peopleהָעָ֔םha.'AmH5971thereשָׁ֙מָּה֙Sha.mahH8033,for they are fewמְעַ֖טme.'AtH4592.”

4So about threeכִּשְׁלֹ֥שֶׁתkish.Lo.shetH7969thousandאֲלָפִ֖ים'a.la.FimH505menאִ֑ישׁ'IshH376from the peopleהָעָם֙ha.'AmH5971wentH5927upH5927thereשָׁ֔מָּהSha.mahH8033, butthey fledוַיָּנֻ֕סוּvai.ya.Nu.suH5127from the menH376of Aiהָעָֽי׃ha.'AiH5857.

5And the menאִ֔ישׁ'IshH376of Aiהָעַ֗יha.'AiH5857struckH5221andH5221killedH5221about thirty-sixכִּשְׁלֹשִׁ֤ים וְשִׁשָּׁה֙kish.lo.Shim ve.shi.ShahH7970 H8337of their menH376,and pursuedוַֽיִּרְדְּפ֞וּםvai.yir.de.FumH7291themfrom the gateהַשַּׁ֙עַר֙ha.Sha.'arH8179as farעַד־'ad-H5704as Shebarimהַשְּׁבָרִ֔יםha.she.va.RimH7671and struckH5221them on the mountainsideבַּמּוֹרָ֑דba.mo.RadH4174; and theheartsלְבַב־le.vav-H3824of the peopleהָעָ֖םha.'AmH5971meltedוַיִּמַּ֥סvai.yi.MasH4549and becameוַיְהִ֥יvay.HiH1961like waterלְמָֽיִם׃le.Ma.yimH4325.

6Then Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁ֜עַye.ho.Shu.a'H3091toreוַיִּקְרַ֨עvai.yik.Ra'H7167his clothesשִׂמְלֹתָ֗יוsim.lo.TavH8071and fellוַיִּפֹּל֩vai.yi.PolH5307to the groundאַ֜רְצָה'Ar.tzahH776on his faceפָּנָ֨יוpa.NavH6440beforeלִפְנֵ֨יlif.NeiH6440the arkאֲר֤וֹן'a.RonH727of the Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068untilעַד־'ad-H5704the eveningהָעֶ֔רֶבha.'E.revH6153, bothhe and the eldersוְזִקְנֵ֣יve.zik.NeiH2205of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֑לYis.ra.'ElH3478; andthey putוַיַּעֲל֥וּvai.ya.'a.LuH5927dustעָפָ֖ר'a.FarH6083on their headsרֹאשָֽׁם׃ro.ShamH7218.

7And Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁ֜עַye.ho.Shu.a'H3091saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Ohאֲהָ֣הּ׀'a.HahH162,Lordאֲדֹנָ֣י'a.do.NaiH136GodH3068!Whyלָ֠מָהLa.mahH4100did You everH5674bringH5674thisהַזֶּה֙ha.ZehH2088peopleהָעָ֤םha.'AmH5971acrossH5674the Jordanהַיַּרְדֵּ֔ןhai.yar.DenH3383, onlyto handבְּיַ֥דbe.YadH3027 H5414us overH5414to the Amoritesהָאֱמֹרִ֖יha.'e.mo.RiH567,to eliminateלְהַאֲבִידֵ֑נוּle.ha.'a.vi.De.nuH6us? 8Oבִּ֖יbiH994Lordאֲדֹנָ֑י'a.do.NaiH136,whatמָ֣הmahH4100can I sayאֹמַ֔ר'o.MarH559sinceאַ֠חֲרֵי'A.cha.reiH310Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֛לYis.ra.'ElH3478has turnedהָפַ֧ךְha.FakhH2015theirbackעֹ֖רֶף'O.refH6203beforeלִפְנֵ֥יlif.NeiH6440their enemiesH340?

9For the Canaanitesהַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֗יha.ke.na.'a.NiH3669and allוְכֹל֙ve.KholH3605the inhabitantsיֹשְׁבֵ֣יyo.she.VeiH3427of the landהָאָ֔רֶץha.'A.retzH776will hearוְיִשְׁמְע֣וּve.yish.me.'UH8085about it, and they will surroundוְנָסַ֣בּוּve.na.Sa.buH5437us and eliminateוְהִכְרִ֥יתוּve.hikh.Ri.tuH3772our nameשְׁמֵ֖נוּshe.Me.nuH8034from the earthהָאָ֑רֶץha.'A.retzH776.And whatוּמַֽה־u.mah-H4100will You doתַּעֲשֵׂ֖הta.'a.SehH6213for Your greatהַגָּדֽוֹל׃ סha.ga.DolH1419nameלְשִׁמְךָ֥le.shim.KhaH8034?”

10So the Lordיְהוָ֛הYah.wehH3068saidוַיֹּ֧אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַye.ho.Shu.a'H3091, “Standקֻ֣םkumH6965upH6965!Whyלָ֣מָּהLa.mahH4100is it that you have fallenנֹפֵ֥לno.FelH5307on your faceפָּנֶֽיךָ׃pa.Nei.khaH6440?

11Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לYis.ra.'ElH3478has sinnedחָטָא֙cha.Ta'H2398, andthey have alsoH1571violatedעָבְר֣וּ'a.ve.RuH5674My covenantבְּרִיתִ֔יbe.ri.TiH1285whichאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834I commandedצִוִּ֖יתִיtzi.Vi.tiH6680them. And they have evenH1571takenלָֽקְחוּ֙la.ke.ChuH3947someמִן־min-H4480of the thingsהַחֵ֔רֶםha.Che.remH2764designatedH2764forH2764destructionH2764,and have bothH1571stolenגָּֽנְבוּ֙ga.ne.VuH1589and keptH3584it asecretH3584.Furthermore, they have alsoH1571putשָׂ֥מוּSa.muH7760themamong their own thingsבִכְלֵיהֶֽם׃vikh.lei.HemH3627.

12Therefore thesonsבְּנֵ֣יbe.NeiH1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֗לYis.ra.'ElH3478cannotיֻכְל֜וּyukh.LuH3201 H3808standלָקוּם֙la.KumH6965againstלִפְנֵ֣יlif.NeiH6440their enemiesH340;they turnיִפְנוּ֙yif.NuH6437theirbacksעֹ֗רֶף'O.refH6203beforeלִפְנֵ֣יlif.NeiH6440their enemiesH340,becauseכִּ֥יkiH3588they have becomeH1961designatedH2764forH2764destructionH2764.I will not be with you anymoreאוֹסִיף֙'o.SifH3254unlessאִם־'im-H518 H3808you eliminateתַשְׁמִ֛ידוּtash.Mi.duH8045from your midstמִֽקִּרְבְּכֶֽם׃Mi.kir.be.KhemH7130the thingsH2764designatedH2764forH2764destructionH2764.

13StandH6965upH6965!Consecrateקַדֵּ֣שׁka.DeshH6942the peopleהָעָ֔םha.'AmH5971and sayוְאָמַרְתָּ֖ve.'a.mar.TaH559, ‘Consecrateהִתְקַדְּשׁ֣וּhit.ka.de.ShuH6942yourselves for tomorrowלְמָחָ֑רle.ma.CharH4279,becauseכִּ֣יkiH3588the Lordיְהוָ֜הYah.wehH3068,the Godאֱלֹהֵ֣י'e.lo.HeiH430of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֗לYis.ra.'ElH3478,has saidאָמַ֨ר'a.MarH559thisכֹה֩khohH3541: “There are thingsחֵ֤רֶםChe.remH2764designatedH2764forH2764destructionH2764in your midstבְּקִרְבְּךָ֙be.kir.be.ChaH7130,Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לYis.ra.'ElH3478.You cannotלֹ֣א תוּכַ֗לlo' tu.KhalH3201 H3808standH6965againstלִפְנֵ֣יlif.NeiH6440your enemiesH340untilעַד־'ad-H5704you have removedהֲסִירְכֶ֥םha.sir.KhemH5493the designatedH2764thingsהַחֵ֖רֶםha.Che.remH2764from your midstמִֽקִּרְבְּכֶֽם׃Mi.kir.be.KhemH7130.”

14So in the morningבַּבֹּ֖קֶרba.Bo.kerH1242you shall comeH7126forwardH7126by your tribesלְשִׁבְטֵיכֶ֑םle.shiv.tei.KhemH7626.And it shall be that the tribeהַשֵּׁבֶט֩ha.she.VetH7626whichאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834the Lordיְהוָ֜הYah.wehH3068selectsH3920byH3920lotH3920shall comeH7126forwardH7126by familiesלַמִּשְׁפָּח֗וֹתla.mish.pa.ChotH4940,and the familyוְהַמִּשְׁפָּחָ֞הve.ha.mish.pa.ChahH4940whichאֲשֶֽׁר־'a.Sher-H834the Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068selectsH3920shall comeH7126forwardH7126by householdsלַבָּתִּ֔יםla.ba.TimH1004,and the householdוְהַבַּ֙יִת֙ve.ha.Ba.yitH1004whichאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068selectsH3920shall comeH7126forwardH7126manH1397by manH1397.

15Andit shall be that the one who is selectedהַנִּלְכָּ֣דha.nil.KadH3920with the thingsבַּחֵ֔רֶםba.Che.remH2764designatedH2764forH2764destructionH2764shall be burnedיִשָּׂרֵ֣ףyi.sa.RefH8313with fireבָּאֵ֔שׁba.'EshH784,he and allכָּל־kol-H3605that belongs to him, becauseכִּ֤יkiH3588he has violatedעָבַר֙'a.VarH5674the covenantבְּרִ֣יתbe.RitH1285of the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068,and becauseוְכִֽי־ve.khi-H3588hehas committedעָשָׂ֥ה'a.SahH6213a disgracefulנְבָלָ֖הne.va.LahH5039thingH5039in Israelבְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃be.Yis.ra.'ElH3478.’”

16So Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙ye.ho.Shu.a'H3091gotH7925upH7925earlyוַיַּשְׁכֵּ֤םvai.yash.KemH7925in the morningבַּבֹּ֔קֶרba.Bo.kerH1242and broughtH7126Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖לYis.ra.'ElH3478forwardH7126bytribesלִשְׁבָטָ֑יוlish.va.TavH7626,and the tribeשֵׁ֥בֶטShe.vetH7626of Judahיְהוּדָֽה׃ye.hu.DahH3063was selectedוַיִּלָּכֵ֖דvai.yi.la.KhedH3920.

17So he broughtH7126the familyמִשְׁפַּ֣חַתmish.Pa.chatH4940of Judahיְהוּדָ֔הye.hu.DahH3063forwardH7126,and he selectedוַיִּלְכֹּ֕דvai.yil.KodH3920the familyמִשְׁפַּ֣חַתmish.Pa.chatH4940of the Zerahitesהַזַּרְחִ֑יha.zar.ChiH2227;then he broughtH7126the familyמִשְׁפַּ֤חַתmish.Pa.chatH4940of the Zerahitesהַזַּרְחִי֙ha.zar.ChiH2227forwardH7126manH1397by manH1397,and Zabdiזַבְדִּֽי׃zav.DiH2067was selectedוַיִּלָּכֵ֖דvai.yi.la.KhedH3920.
