Rehoboam’s Reign of Foolishness

1Then Rehoboamרְחַבְעָ֖םre.chav.'AmH7346wentוַיֵּ֥לֶךְvai.Ye.lekhH1980to Shechemשְׁכֶ֑מָהshe.Khe.mahH7927,becauseכִּ֥יkiH3588allכָל־khol-H3605Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖לYis.ra.'ElH3478had comeבָּ֥אוּBa.'uH935to Shechemשְׁכֶ֛םshe.KhemH7927to makeלְהַמְלִ֥יךְle.ham.LikhH4427him kingH4427.

2When Jeroboamיָרָבְעָ֤םya.ra.ve.'AmH3379the sonבֶּן־ben-H1121of Nebatנְבָט֙ne.VatH5028heardכִּשְׁמֹ֨עַkish.Mo.a'H8085about it (he was in Egyptבְמִצְרַ֔יִםve.mitz.Ra.yimH4714whereאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834he had fledבָּרַ֔חba.RachH1272from the presenceמִפְּנֵ֖יmi.pe.NeiH6440of Kingהַמֶּ֑לֶךְha.Me.lekhH4428Solomonשְׁלֹמֹ֣הshe.lo.MohH8010),Jeroboamיָרָבְעָ֖םya.ra.ve.'AmH3379returnedוַיָּ֥שָׁבvai.Ya.shovH7725from Egyptמִמִּצְרָֽיִם׃mi.mitz.Ra.yimH4714.

3So they sentוַֽיִּשְׁלְחוּ֙vai.yish.le.ChuH7971wordand summonedוַיִּקְרְאוּ־vai.yik.re.'u-H7121him. When Jeroboamיָרָבְעָ֖םya.ra.ve.'AmH3379and allוְכָל־ve.kholH3605Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֑לYis.ra.'ElH3478cameוַיָּבֹ֥אvai.ya.Vo'H935,they spokeוַֽיְדַבְּר֔וּvay.da.be.RuH1696to Rehoboamרְחַבְעָ֖םre.chav.'AmH7346,sayingלֵאמֹֽר׃le.MorH559,

4“Your fatherאָבִ֖יךָ'a.Vi.khaH1madeH7185ouryokeעֻלֵּ֑נוּ'u.Le.nuH5923hardהִקְשָׁ֣הhik.ShahH7185;but nowוְעַתָּ֡הve.'a.TahH6258,lightenהָקֵל֩ha.KelH7043the hardהַקָּשָׁ֗הha.ka.ShahH7186laborמֵעֲבֹדַ֨תme.'a.vo.DatH5656imposed byyour fatherאָבִ֜יךָ'a.Vi.khaH1and his heavyהַכָּבֵ֛דha.ka.VedH3515yokeוּמֵעֻלּ֧וֹu.me.'u.LoH5923whichאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834he putנָתַ֥ןna.TanH5414on us, and we will serveוְנַֽעַבְדֶֽךָּ׃ve.Na.'av.De.kaH5647you.”

5He saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to them, “Returnוְשׁ֣וּבוּve.Shu.vuH7725to me againע֛וֹדodH5750in threeשְׁלֹ֥שֶׁתshe.Lo.shetH7969daysיָמִ֖יםya.MimH3117.”So the peopleהָעָֽם׃ סha.'AmH5971departedוַיֵּ֖לֶךְvai.Ye.lekhH1980.

6And then Kingהַמֶּ֣לֶךְha.Me.lekhH4428Rehoboamרְחַבְעָ֗םre.chav.'AmH7346consultedוַיִּוָּעַ֞ץvai.yi.va.'AtzH3289with the eldersהַזְּקֵנִים֙ha.ze.ke.NimH2205whoאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834hadH1961servedעֹֽמְדִ֗ים לִפְנֵי֙'o.me.Dim lif.NeiH5975 H6440his fatherאָבִ֔יו'a.VivH1Solomonשְׁלֹמֹ֣הshe.lo.MohH8010while he was still aliveחַ֖יchaiH2416,sayingלֵאמֹ֑רle.MorH559, “Howאֵ֚יךְ'eikhH349do you adviseנֽוֹעָצִ֔יםno.'a.TzimH3289meto answerלְהָשִׁ֥יב דָּבָֽר׃le.ha.Shiv da.VarH7725 H1697thisהַזֶּ֖הha.ZehH2088peopleלָֽעָם־la.'om-H5971?”

7They spokeוַיְדַבְּר֨וּvay.da.be.RuH1696to him, sayingלֵאמֹ֗רle.MorH559, “Ifאִם־'im-H518you are kindלְט֜וֹבle.TovH2896to thisהַזֶּה֙ha.ZehH2088peopleלְהָעָ֤םle.ha.'AmH5971and pleaseוּרְצִיתָ֔םu.re.tzi.TamH7521them andspeakוְדִבַּרְתָּ֥ve.di.bar.TaH1696pleasantטוֹבִ֑יםto.VimH2896wordsדְּבָרִ֣יםde.va.RimH1697to them, then they will be your servantsעֲבָדִ֖ים'a.va.DimH5650alwaysכָּל־ הַיָּמִֽים׃kol- hai.ya.MimH3605 H3117.”

8But heignoredוַֽיַּעֲזֹ֛בvai.ya.'a.ZoH5800the adviceעֲצַ֥ת'a.TzatH6098of the eldersהַזְּקֵנִ֖יםha.ze.ke.NimH2205whichאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834they had givenיְעָצֻ֑הוּye.'a.Tzu.huH3289him, and consultedוַיִּוָּעַ֗ץvai.yi.va.'AtzH3289with the youngH3206menH3206whoאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834had grownH1431upH1431with himand servedהָעֹמְדִ֖ים לְפָנָֽיו׃ha.'o.me.Dim le.fa.NavH5975 H6440him.

9He saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to them, “Whatמָ֚הmahH4100adviceH3289do you giveH3289,so that we may answerוְנָשִׁ֥יב דָּבָ֖רve.na.Shiv da.VarH7725 H1697thisהַזֶּ֑הha.ZehH2088peopleהָעָ֣םha.'AmH5971,whoאֲשֶׁ֨ר'a.SherH834have spokenדִּבְּר֤וּdi.be.RuH1696to me, sayingלֵאמֹ֔רle.MorH559, ‘Lightenהָקֵל֙ha.KelH7043the yokeהָעֹ֔לha.'OlH5923whichאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834your fatherאָבִ֖יךָ'a.Vi.khaH1putנָתַ֥ןna.TanH5414on us’?”

10The youngH3206menH3206whoאֲשֶׁ֨ר'a.SherH834had grownH1431upH1431with him spokeוַיְדַבְּר֣וּvay.da.be.RuH1696to him, sayingלֵאמֹר֒le.MorH559, “ThisH3541isH3541whatH3541you should sayתֹאמַ֡רto.MarH559to the peopleלָעָם֩la.'AmH5971whoאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834spokeדִּבְּר֨וּdi.be.RuH1696to you, sayingלֵאמֹ֗רle.MorH559: ‘Your fatherאָבִ֙יךָ֙'a.Vi.khaH1madeH3513our yokeעֻלֵּ֔נוּ'u.Le.nuH5923heavyהִכְבִּ֣ידhikh.BidH3513,but you makeH7043it lighterH7043for us!’ You should speakתֹּאמַ֣רto.MarH559thisH3541wayH3541to them: ‘My littleקָֽטָנִּ֥יka.ta.NiH6995fingerH6995is thickerעָבָ֖ה'a.VahH5666thanH4480my father’sאָבִֽי׃'a.ViH1waistמִמָּתְנֵ֥יmi.ma.te.NeiH4975!

11Nowוְעַתָּ֗הve.'a.TahH6258then, my fatherאָבִי֙'a.ViH1loadedהֶעְמִ֤יסhe'.MisH6006you with a heavyכָּבֵ֔דka.VedH3515yokeעֹ֣ל'olH5923;yet I will addאֹסִ֣יף'o.SifH3254to your yokeעֻלְּכֶ֑ם'u.le.KhemH5923.My fatherאָבִ֗י'a.ViH1disciplinedיִסַּ֤רyi.SarH3256you with whipsבַּשּׁוֹטִ֔יםba.sho.TimH7752, but I will discipline you withscorpionsבָּֽעֲקְרַבִּֽים׃ סBa.'ak.ra.BimH6137!’”

12So Jeroboamיָרָבְעָ֧םya.ra.ve.'AmH3379and allוְכָל־ve.kholH3605the peopleהָעָ֛םha.'AmH5971cameוַיָּבֹ֨אvai.ya.Vo'H935to Rehoboamרְחַבְעָ֖םre.chav.'AmH7346on the thirdהַשְּׁלִשִׁ֑יha.she.li.ShiH7992dayבַּיּ֣וֹםbai.YomH3117,justH3512asH3512the kingהַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ha.Me.lekhH4428haddirectedדִּבֶּ֤רdi.BerH1696,sayingלֵאמֹ֔רle.MorH559, “Returnשׁ֥וּבוּShu.vuH7725to me on the thirdהַשְּׁלִשִֽׁי׃ha.she.li.ShiH7992dayבַּיּ֥וֹםbai.YomH3117.”

13The kingהַמֶּ֖לֶךְha.Me.lekhH4428answeredוַיַּעֲנֵ֥םvai.ya.'a.NemH6030them harshlyקָשָׁ֑הka.ShahH7186,and Kingהַמֶּ֣לֶךְha.Me.lekhH4428Rehoboamרְחַבְעָ֔םre.chav.'AmH7346ignoredוַֽיַּעֲזֹב֙vai.ya.'a.ZoH5800the adviceעֲצַ֥ת'a.TzatH6098of the eldersהַזְּקֵנִֽים׃ha.ze.ke.NimH2205.

14He spokeוַיְדַבֵּ֣רvay.da.BerH1696to them according to the adviceכַּעֲצַ֤תka.'a.TzatH6098of the youngהַיְלָדִים֙hay.la.DimH3206menH3206,sayingלֵאמֹ֔רle.MorH559, “My fatherאָבִ֗י'a.ViH1madeאַכְבִּיד֙'akh.BidH3513your yokeעֻלְּכֶ֔ם'u.le.KhemH5923heavyH3513,but I will addאֹסִ֣יף'o.SifH3254to it; my fatherH1disciplinedיִסַּ֤רyi.SarH3256you with whipsבַּשּׁוֹטִ֔יםba.sho.TimH7752, but I will discipline you withscorpionsבָּעֲקְרַבִּֽים׃ba.'ak.ra.BimH6137.”

15So the kingהַמֶּ֖לֶךְha.Me.lekhH4428did not listenשָׁמַ֥עsha.Ma'H8085to the peopleהָעָ֑םha.'AmH5971,becauseכִּֽי־ki-H3588it was a turnH5252ofH5252eventsH5252from Godהָֽאֱלֹהִ֔יםha.'E.lo.HimH430soלְמַעַן֩le.ma.'AnH4616thatH4616the Lordיְהוָ֜הYah.wehH3068might establishהָקִ֨יםha.KimH6965His wordדְּבָר֗וֹde.va.RoH1697,whichאֲשֶׁ֤ר'a.SherH834He spokeדִּבֶּר֙di.BerH1696throughבְּיַד֙be.YadH3027Ahijahאֲחִיָּ֣הוּ'a.chi.Ya.huH281the Shiloniteהַשִּֽׁלוֹנִ֔יha.shi.lo.NiH7888to Jeroboamיָרָבְעָ֖םya.ra.ve.'AmH3379the sonבֶּן־ben-H1121of Nebatנְבָֽט׃ne.VatH5028.
