1Then Satanשָׂטָ֖ןsa.TanH7854stoodוַיַּֽעֲמֹ֥דvai.ya.'a.ModH5975up againstעַל־'al-H5921Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֑לYis.ra.'ElH3478and incitedוַיָּ֙סֶת֙vai.Ya.setH5496Davidדָּוִ֔ידda.VidH1732to countלִמְנ֖וֹתlim.NotH4487Israelיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃Yis.ra.'ElH3478.

2So Davidדָּוִ֤ידda.VidH1732saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Joabיוֹאָב֙yo.'AvH3097and to the leadersשָׂרֵ֣יsa.ReiH8269of the peopleהָעָ֔םha.'AmH5971, “Goלְכ֗וּle.KhuH1980,countסִפְרוּ֙sif.RuH5608Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לYis.ra.'ElH3478from BeershebaH884to Danדָּ֑ןDanH1835,and bringוְהָבִ֣יאוּve.ha.Vi.'uH935me wordso that I may knowוְאֵדְעָ֖הve.'e.de.'AhH3045their numberמִסְפָּרָֽם׃mis.pa.RamH4557.”

3But Joabיוֹאָ֗בyo.'AvH3097saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “May the Lordיְהוָ֨הYah.wehH3068addיוֹסֵף֩yo.SefH3254to His peopleעַמּ֤וֹ׀a.MoH5971a hundredמֵאָ֣הme.'AhH3967timesפְעָמִ֔יםfe.'a.MimH6471as many as they are! My lordאֲדֹנִ֣י'a.do.NiH113the kingהַמֶּ֔לֶךְha.Me.lekhH4428,are they not allכֻּלָּ֥םku.LamH3605my lord’sלַאדֹנִ֖יla.do.NiH113servantsלַעֲבָדִ֑יםla.'a.va.DimH5650?Whyלָ֣מָּהLa.mahH4100does my lordאֲדֹנִ֔י'a.do.NiH113seekיְבַקֵּ֥שׁye.va.KeshH1245thisH2088thingH2088?Whyלָ֛מָּהLa.mahH4100should he be a causeH819ofH819guiltלְאַשְׁמָ֖הle.'ash.MahH819to Israelלְיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃le.Yis.ra.'ElH3478?”

4Nevertheless, the king’sהַמֶּ֖לֶךְha.Me.lekhH4428wordוּדְבַר־u.de.var-H1697prevailedחָזַ֣קcha.ZakH2388againstעַל־'al-H5921Joabיוֹאָ֑בyo.'AvH3097.Therefore, Joabיוֹאָ֗בyo.'AvH3097departedוַיֵּצֵ֣אvai.ye.Tze'H3318and wentוַיִּתְהַלֵּךְ֙vai.yit.ha.leKhH1980throughoutבְּכָל־be.kholH3605Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לYis.ra.'ElH3478,and cameוַיָּבֹ֖אvai.ya.Vo'H935to Jerusalemיְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ye.ru.sha.LimH3389.

5Then Joabיוֹאָ֛בyo.'AvH3097gaveוַיִּתֵּ֥ןvai.yi.TenH5414the numberמִסְפַּ֥רmis.ParH4557of the censusמִפְקַד־mif.kad-H4662of the peopleהָעָ֖םha.'AmH5971to Davidדָּוִ֑ידda.VidH1732.Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֡לYis.ra.'ElH3478was 1,100,000וּמֵאָ֨הu.me.'AhH505 H3967menאִישׁ֙'ishH376in allכָֽל־khol-H3605who drewשֹׁ֣לֵֽףSho.lefH8025the swordחֶ֔רֶבChe.revH2719;and Judahוִֽיהוּדָ֕הvi.hu.DahH3063was470,000אַרְבַּע֩ מֵא֨וֹת וְשִׁבְעִ֥ים'ar.Ba' me.'ot ve.shiv.'ImH702 H3967 H7657 H505menאִ֖ישׁ'ishH376who drewשֹׁ֥לֵֽףSho.lefH8025the swordחָֽרֶב׃Cha.revH2719.

6But he did notcountפָקַ֖דfa.KadH6485Leviוְלֵוִי֙ve.le.ViH3878and Benjaminוּבִנְיָמִ֔ןu.vin.ya.MinH1144amongבְּתוֹכָ֑םbe.to.KhamH8432them, becauseכִּֽי־ki-H3588the king’sהַמֶּ֖לֶךְha.Me.lekhH4428commandדְּבַר־de.var-H1697wasH8581abhorrentH8581to Joabיוֹאָֽב׃yo.'AvH3097.

7NowGodהָאֱלֹהִ֔יםha.'E.lo.HimH430was displeasedוַיֵּ֙רַע֙ בְּעֵינֵ֣יvai.Ye.ra' be.'ei.NeiH7489 H5869with thisהַזֶּ֑הha.ZehH2088thingהַדָּבָ֖רha.da.VarH1697,so He struckוַיַּ֖ךְvai.YakhH5221Israelיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ פYis.ra.'ElH3478.

8Davidדָּוִיד֙da.VidH1732saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Godהָ֣אֱלֹהִ֔יםha.'E.lo.HimH430, “I have sinnedחָטָ֣אתִֽיcha.Ta.tiH2398greatlyמְאֹ֔דme.'OdH3966,by doingעָשִׂ֖יתִי'a.Si.tiH6213thisהַזֶּ֑הha.ZehH2088thingהַדָּבָ֣רha.da.VarH1697.But nowוְעַתָּ֗הve.'a.TahH6258,pleaseנָא֙na'H4994overlookהַֽעֲבֶר־ha.'a.ver-H5674Your servant’sעַבְדְּךָ֔'av.de.KhaH5650guiltעֲו֣וֹןa.VonH5771,for I have behavedH5528veryמְאֹֽד׃ פme.'OdH3966foolishlyנִסְכַּ֖לְתִּיnis.Kal.tiH5528.”

9The Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068spokeוַיְדַבֵּ֤רvay.da.BerH1696toGadגָּ֔דGadH1410,David’sדָוִ֖ידda.VidH1732seerחֹזֵ֥הcho.ZehH2374,sayingלֵאמֹֽר׃le.MorH559,

10“Goלֵךְ֩leKhH1980and speakוְדִבַּרְתָּ֨ve.di.bar.TaH1696to Davidדָּוִ֜ידda.VidH1732,sayingלֵאמֹ֗רle.MorH559, ‘ThisH3541isH3541whatH3541the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068saysאָמַ֣ר'a.MarH559: “I extendנֹטֶ֣הno.TehH5186to you threeשָׁל֕וֹשׁsha.Lo.oshH7969choices;chooseבְּחַר־be.char-H977for yourself oneאַחַ֥ת'a.ChatH259of them, which I will doוְאֶֽעֱשֶׂה־ve.'e.'e.seh-H6213to you.”’”

11So Gadגָ֖דgadH1410cameוַיָּ֥בֹאvai.Ya.vo'H935to Davidדָּוִ֑ידda.VidH1732and saidוַיֹּ֥אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to him, “ThisH3541isH3541whatH3541the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068saysאָמַ֥ר'a.MarH559: ‘Takeקַבֶּל־ka.bel-H6901for yourself

12threeשָׁל֨וֹשׁsha.Lo.oshH7969yearsשָׁנִ֜יםsha.NimH8141of famineרָעָ֗בra.'AvH7458,or threeשְׁלֹשָׁ֨הshe.lo.ShahH7969monthsחֳדָשִׁ֜יםcho.da.ShimH2320to be sweptנִסְפֶּ֥הnis.PehH5595awayH5595beforeמִפְּנֵי־mi.pe.nei-H4480 H6440your foesצָרֶיךָ֮tza.rei.KhaH6862while the swordוְחֶ֣רֶבve.Che.revH2719of your enemiesH340overtakesלְמַשֶּׂגֶת֒le.ma.se.GetH5381you,or else threeשְׁלֹ֣שֶׁתshe.Lo.shetH7969daysיָ֠מִיםYa.mimH3117of the swordחֶ֣רֶבChe.revH2719of the Lordיְהוָ֤הYah.wehH3068:a plagueוְדֶ֙בֶר֙ve.De.verH1698in the landבָּאָ֔רֶץba.'A.retzH776,and the angelוּמַלְאַ֣ךְu.mal.'AkhH4397of the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068destroyingמַשְׁחִ֖יתmash.ChitH7843throughoutבְּכָל־be.kholH3605the territoryגְּב֣וּלge.VulH1366of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֑לYis.ra.'ElH3478.’Nowוְעַתָּ֣הve.'a.TahH6258,therefore, considerרְאֵ֔הre.'EhH7200whatמָֽה־mah-H4100answerדָּבָֽר׃ פda.VarH1697I shall bringאָשִׁ֥יב'a.ShivH7725backH7725to Him who sentשֹׁלְחִ֖יsho.le.ChiH7971me.”

13Davidדָּוִ֛ידda.VidH1732saidוַיֹּ֧אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Gadגָּ֖דgadH1410, “I amH6887inH6887greatמְאֹ֑דme.'OdH3966distressH6887;pleaseנָּ֣אna'H4994let me fallאֶפְּלָה־'e.pe.lah-H5307into the handבְיַד־ve.yad-H3027of the Lordיְהוָ֗הYah.wehH3068,for His merciesרַחֲמָיו֙ra.cha.MavH7356are veryמְאֹ֔דme.'OdH3966greatרַבִּ֤יםra.BimH7227.But do not let me fallאֶפֹּֽל׃'e.PolH5307into humanאָדָ֖ם'a.DamH120handsוּבְיַד־u.ve.yad-H3027.”
