Defeat and Death of Saul and His Sons

1Now the Philistinesוּפְלִשְׁתִּ֖יםu.fe.lish.TimH6430foughtנִלְחֲמ֣וּnil.cha.MuH3898against Israelבְיִשְׂרָאֵ֑לve.Yis.ra.'ElH3478,and the menאִֽישׁ־'ish-H376of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵל֙Yis.ra.'ElH3478fledוַיָּ֑נָסvai.Ya.nosH5127fromH4480the Philistinesפְלִשְׁתִּ֔יםfe.lish.TimH6430but fellוַיִּפְּל֥וּvai.yi.pe.LuH5307fatallyH2491woundedH2491on Mountבְּהַ֥רbe.HarH2022Gilboaגִּלְבֹּֽעַ׃gil.Bo.a'H1533.

2And the Philistinesפְלִשְׁתִּ֔יםfe.lish.TimH6430also overtookוַיַּדְבְּק֣וּvai.yad.be.KuH1692Saulשָׁא֖וּלsha.'UlH7586and his sonsבָנָ֑יוva.NavH1121,and the Philistinesפְלִשְׁתִּ֗יםfe.lish.TimH6430killedוַיַּכּ֣וּvai.ya.KuH5221JonathanH3083,Abinadabאֲבִינָדָ֛ב'a.vi.na.DavH41,and Malchi-shuaH4444,the sonsבְּנֵ֥יbe.NeiH1121of Saulשָׁאֽוּל׃sha.'UlH7586.

3The battleהַמִּלְחָמָה֙ha.mil.cha.MahH4421becameH3513severeH3513againstעַל־'al-H5921Saulשָׁא֔וּלsha.'UlH7586,and the archersהַמּוֹרִ֣ים בַּקָּ֑שֶׁתha.mo.Rim ba.Ka.shetH3384 H7198foundוַיִּמְצָאֻ֖הוּvai.yim.tza.'U.huH4672him; and he was woundedוַיָּ֖חֶלvai.Ya.chelH2342by the archersהַיּוֹרִֽים׃hai.yo.RimH3384.

4Then Saulשָׁאוּל֩sha.'UlH7586saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to his armorכֵלָ֜יוkhe.LavH3627bearerנֹשֵׂ֨אno.Se'H5375, “Drawשְׁלֹ֥ףshe.LofH8025your swordחַרְבְּךָ֣׀char.be.KhaH2719and thrustH1856me throughH1856with it, otherwiseפֶּן־pen-H6435theseהָאֵ֙לֶּה֙ha.'E.lehH428uncircumcisedהָעֲרֵלִ֤יםha.'a.re.LimH6189Philistineswill comeיָבֹ֜אוּya.Vo.'uH935and abuseוְהִתְעַלְּלוּ־ve.hit.'a.le.lu-H5953me.” But his armorכֵלָ֔יוkhe.LavH3627bearerנֹשֵׂ֣אno.Se'H5375wouldאָבָה֙'a.VahH14not, for he wasH3372veryמְאֹ֑ד סme.'OdH3966afraidיָרֵ֖אya.Re'H3372.So Saulשָׁאוּל֙sha.'UlH7586tookוַיִּקַּ֤חvai.yi.KachH3947his ownswordהַחֶ֔רֶבha.Che.revH2719and fellוַיִּפֹּ֖לvai.yi.PolH5307on it.

5When his armorכֵלָ֖יוkhe.LavH3627bearerנֹשֵֽׂא־no.se'-H5375sawוַיַּ֥רְאvai.Yar'H7200that Saulשָׁא֑וּלsha.'UlH7586was deadמֵ֣תmetH4191,he likewiseגַּם־gam-H1571fellוַיִּפֹּ֥לvai.yi.PolH5307on his swordהַחֶ֖רֶבha.Che.revH2719and diedוַיָּמֹֽת׃ סvai.ya.MotH4191.

6So Saulשָׁאוּל֙sha.'UlH7586diedוַיָּ֤מָתvai.Ya.motH4191with his threeוּשְׁלֹ֣שֶׁתu.she.Lo.shetH7969sonsבָּנָ֔יוba.NavH1121,and allוְכָל־ve.kholH3605thoseof his houseבֵּית֖וֹbei.ToH1004diedמֵֽתוּ׃Me.tuH4191togetherH3164.

7When allכָּל־kol-H3605the peopleאִ֨ישׁ'ishH376of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֤לYis.ra.'ElH3478whoאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834were in the valleyבָּעֵ֙מֶק֙ba.'E.mekH6010sawוַ֠יִּרְאוּVai.yir.'uH7200that they had fledנָ֔סוּNa.suH5127,and that Saulשָׁא֣וּלsha.'UlH7586and his sonsוּבָנָ֑יוu.va.NavH1121were deadמֵ֖תוּMe.tuH4191,they abandonedוַיַּעַזְב֤וּvai.ya.'az.VuH5800their citiesעָרֵיהֶם֙'a.rei.HemH5892and fledוַיָּנֻ֔סוּvai.ya.Nu.suH5127;and the Philistinesפְלִשְׁתִּ֔יםfe.lish.TimH6430cameוַיָּבֹ֣אוּvai.ya.Vo.'uH935and livedוַיֵּשְׁב֖וּvai.ye.she.VuH3427in them.

8It cameH1961aboutH1961the nextמִֽמָּחֳרָ֔תmi.mo.cho.RatH4283dayH4283,when the Philistinesפְלִשְׁתִּ֔יםfe.lish.TimH6430cameוַיָּבֹ֣אוּvai.ya.Vo.'uH935to stripלְפַשֵּׁ֖טle.fa.ShetH6584those killedהַֽחֲלָלִ֑יםha.cha.la.LimH2491,that they foundוַֽיִּמְצְא֤וּvai.yim.tze.'UH4672Saulשָׁאוּל֙sha.'UlH7586and his sonsבָּנָ֔יוba.NavH1121fallenנֹפְלִ֖יםno.fe.LimH5307on Mountבְּהַ֥רbe.HarH2022Gilboaגִּלְבֹּֽעַ׃gil.Bo.a'H1533.

9So they strippedוַיַּ֨פְשִׁיטֻ֔הוּvai.Yaf.shi.Tu.huH6584him and tookוַיִּשְׂא֥וּvai.yis.'UH5375his headרֹאשׁ֖וֹro.ShoH7218and his armorכֵּלָ֑יוke.LavH3627and sentוַיְשַׁלְּח֨וּvay.sha.le.ChuH7971messengersaroundסָבִ֗יבsa.VivH5439the landבְאֶֽרֶץ־ve.'e.retz-H776of the Philistinesפְלִשְׁתִּ֜יםfe.lish.TimH6430to carryH1319the goodH1319newsלְבַשֵּׂ֛רle.va.SerH1319to their idolsעֲצַבֵּיהֶ֖ם'a.tza.bei.HemH6091and to the peopleהָעָֽם׃ha.'AmH5971.

10They putוַיָּשִׂ֙ימוּ֙vai.ya.Si.muH7760his armorכֵּלָ֔יוke.LavH3627in the houseבֵּ֖יתbeitH1004of their godsאֱלֹהֵיהֶ֑ם'e.lo.hei.HemH430andimpaledתָקְע֖וּta.ke.'UH8628his headגֻּלְגָּלְתּ֥וֹgul.gal.ToH1538in the houseבֵּ֥יתbeitH1004of Dagonדָּגֽוֹן׃ סda.GonH1712.

12allכָּל־kol-H3605the valiantחַיִל֒cha.YilH2428menאִ֣ישׁ'ishH376gotH6965upH6965and tookוַיִּשְׂא֞וּvai.yis.'UH5375away the bodyגּוּפַ֣תgu.FatH1480of Saulשָׁא֗וּלsha.'UlH7586and the bodiesגּוּפֹ֣תgu.FotH1480of his sonsבָּנָ֔יוba.NavH1121,and broughtוַיְבִיא֖וּםvay.vi.'UmH935them to Jabeshיָבֵ֑ישָׁהya.Vei.shahH3003;and they buriedוַיִּקְבְּר֨וּvai.yik.be.RuH6912their bonesעַצְמוֹתֵיהֶ֜םatz.mo.tei.HemH6106underתַּ֤חַתTa.chatH8478the oakהָאֵלָה֙ha.'e.LahH424in Jabeshבְּיָבֵ֔שׁbe.ya.VeshH3003,and fastedוַיָּצ֖וּמוּvai.ya.Tzu.muH6684for sevenשִׁבְעַ֥תshiv.'AtH7651daysיָמִֽים׃ya.MimH3117.

13So Saulשָׁא֗וּלsha.'UlH7586diedוַיָּ֣מָתvai.Ya.motH4191for his unfaithfulnessבְּמַֽעֲלוֹ֙be.ma.'a.LoH4603 H4604whichאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834he committedH4603against the Lordבַּֽיהוָ֔הba.Yah.wehH3068,becauseעַל־'al-H5921of the wordדְּבַ֥רde.VarH1697of the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068whichאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834he did not keepשָׁמָ֑רsha.MarH8104;and alsoוְגַם־ve.gam-H1571because he askedלִשְׁא֥וֹלlish.'olH7592counselof a mediumבָּא֖וֹבba.'ovH178,makingH1875inquiryH1875of her,

14and did not inquireדָרַ֥שׁda.RashH1875of the Lordבַּֽיהוָ֖הba.Yah.wehH3068.Therefore He killedוַיְמִיתֵ֑הוּvay.mi.Te.huH4191him andturnedוַיַּסֵּב֙vai.ya.SevH5437the kingdomהַמְּלוּכָ֔הha.me.lu.KhahH4410overH5437to Davidלְדָוִ֖ידle.da.VidH1732,the sonבֶּן־ben-H1121of Jesseיִשָֽׁי׃ פyi.ShaiH3448.
