Context of Revelation 9:20
18A third of mankind was killed by these three plagues, by the fire, the smoke, and the brimstone which came out of their mouths. 19For the power of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails are like serpents and have heads, and with them they do harm. The rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands so as not to worship demons and the idols of gold, silver, brass, stone, and wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk; 21and they did not repent of their murders, nor of their witchcraft, nor of their sexual immorality, nor of their thefts.

Commentaries on Revelation 9:20
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 20Yet repented not - The commission which these horsemen had was against idolaters; and though multitudes of them were destroyed, yet the residue continued their senseless attachment to dumb idols, and therefore heavier judgments might be expected. These things are supposed to refer to the desolation brought upon the Greek Church by the Ottomans, who entirely ruined that Church and the Greek empire. The Church which was then remaining was the Latin or…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 20And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues - One third part is represented as swept off, and it might have been expected that a salutary effect would have been produced on the remainder, in reforming them, and restraining them from error and sin. No reformation followed; there was no abandonment of the…Read the comment

From this sixth trumpet learn that God can make one enemy of the church a scourge and a plague to another. The idolatry in the remains of the eastern church and elsewhere, and the sins of professed…Read the comment
