Context of Hebrews 10:32

30For we know Him who said, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay.” And again, “The Lord will judge His people.” 31It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God. But remember the former days, when, after being enlightened, you endured a great conflict of sufferings, 33partly by being made a public spectacle through insults and distress, and partly by becoming companions with those who were so treated. 34For you showed sympathy to the prisoners and accepted joyfully the seizure of your property, knowing that you have for yourselves a better and lasting possession.

Commentaries on Hebrews 10:32

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 32But call to remembrance - It appears from this, and indeed from some parts of the Gospel history, that the first believers in Judea were greatly persecuted; our Lord's crucifixion, Stephen's martyrdom, the persecution that arose after the death of Stephen, Acts 8:1, Herod's persecution, Acts 12:1, in which James was killed, and the various persecutions of St. Paul, sufficiently show that this disposition was predominant among that bad people. • Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 32But call to remembrance the former days - It would seem from this, that at the time when the apostle wrote this Epistle they were suffering some severe trials, in which they were in great danger of apostatizing from their religion. It is also manifest that they had on some former occasion endured a similar trial, and had been enabled to bear it with a Christian spirit, and with resignation. The object of the apostle now is to remind them that they were…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 32-39Verses 32-39 Many and various afflictions united against the early Christians, and they had a great conflict. The Christian spirit is not a selfish spirit; it puts us upon pitying others, visiting them, helping them, and pleading for them. All things here are but shadows. The happiness of the saints in heaven will last for ever; enemies can never take it away as earthly goods. This will make rich amends for all we may lose and suffer here. The greatest…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 32the early days that you were in the light: The author reminds his audience about the early days after they believed in Christ. During that time, their faith was tested. Even when they suffered greatly, they stayed faithful. Suffering is normal for someone who identifies with Christ and his community (see 13:12–13; Acts 9:16; Romans 8:17; 1 Corinthians 4:12–13; Philippians 1:29; James 1:2–4).Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 3232. As previously he has warned them by the awful end of apostates, so here he stirs them up by the remembrance of their own former faith, patience, and self-sacrificing love.
