Hebrews 5

The Perfect High Priest

1For every high priest 1taken from among men is appointed on behalf of people in 2things pertaining to God, in order to 3offer both gifts and sacrifices 4for sins; 256he can deal gently with the 7ignorant and 8misguided, since he himself also is 910clothed in weakness; 3and because of it he is obligated to offer sacrifices 11for sins for himself, 12as well as for the people. 4And 13no one takes the honor for himself, but receives it when he is called by God, just 14as Aaron also was.

5So too Christ 15did not glorify Himself in becoming a 16high priest, but it was He who 17said to Him, “18You are My Son, Today I have fathered You”; 6just as He also says in another passage, “19You are a priest forever According to 20the order of Melchizedek.” 7In the days of 21His humanity, 2223He offered up both prayers and pleas with 24loud crying and tears to the One 25able to save Him 26from death, and He 27was heard because of His 28devout behavior. 8Although He was 29a Son, He learned 30obedience from the things which He suffered. 9And having been 31perfected, He became the source of eternal salvation for all those who obey Him, 10being designated by God as 32High Priest according to 33the order of Melchizedek.

11Concerning 34him we have much to say, and it is difficult to explain, since you have become 35poor listeners. 12For though 36by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you 37the 3839elementary principles of the 40actual words of God, and you have come to need 41milk and not solid food. 13For everyone who partakes only of milk is unacquainted with the word of righteousness, for he is an 42infant. 14But solid food is for 43the mature, who because of practice have their senses 44trained to 45distinguish between good and evil.
