Hebrews 4

The Believer’s Rest

1Therefore, we must fear if, while a promise remains of entering His rest, any one of you may seem to have 1come short of it. 2For indeed we have had good news preached to us, just as they also did; but 2the word 3they heard did not benefit them, because 4they were not united with those who listened with faith. 3For we who have believed enter that rest, just as He has said, “5As I swore in My anger, They certainly shall not enter My rest,” although His works were finished 6from the foundation of the world. 4For He has said 7somewhere concerning the seventh day: “8And God 9rested on the seventh day from all His works”; 5and again in this passage, “10They certainly shall not enter My rest.” 6Therefore, since it remains for some to enter it, and those who previously had good news preached to them failed to enter because of 11disobedience, 7He again sets a certain day, “Today,” saying 12through David after so long a time just 13as has been said before, “14Today if you hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts.” 8For 15if 16Joshua had given them rest, He would not have spoken of another day after that. 9Consequently, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God. 10For the one who has entered His rest has himself also 17rested from his works, as 18God did from His. 11Therefore let’s make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following the same 19example of 20disobedience. 12For 21the word of God is 22living and 23active, and sharper than any two-edged 24sword, even penetrating as far as the division of 25soul and 26spirit, of both joints and marrow, and 27able to 28judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13And 29there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are 30open and laid bare to the eyes of Him to whom 31we must answer.

14Therefore, since we have a great 32high priest who has 33passed through the heavens, Jesus 34the Son of God, let’s hold firmly to our 35confession. 15For we do not have 36a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been 37tempted in all things just as we are, yet 38without sin. 16Therefore let’s 39approach the throne of grace with 40confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace for help at the time of our need.
