Leviticus 11

Laws about Animals for Food

1The LordH3068 spokeH1696 again to MosesH4872 and to AaronH175, sayingH559 to them, 2“SpeakH1696 to the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478, sayingH559, ‘1TheseH2088 are the creaturesH2421 whichH834 you may eatH398 from allH3605 the animalsH929 that are on the earthH776. 3WhateverH3605 dividesH6536 a hoofH6541, thus makingH8156 splitH8156 hoofsH6541, and chewsH5927 the cudH1625, among the animalsH929, that you may eatH398. 4NeverthelessH389, 2you are not to eatH398 of theseH2088, among those which chewH5927 the cudH1625, or among those which divideH6536 the hoofH6541: the camelH1581, for though it chewsH5927 cudH1625, it does not divideH6536 the hoofH6541, it is uncleanH2931 to you. 5Likewise, the 3shaphanH8227, for though it chewsH5927 cudH1625, it does not divideH6536 the hoofH6541, it is uncleanH2931 to you; 6the 4rabbitH768 also, for though it chewsH5927 cudH1625, it does not divideH6536 the hoofH6541, it is uncleanH2931 to you; 7and the pigH2386, for though it dividesH6536 the hoofH6541, thus makingH8156 a splitH8156 hoofH6541, it does not chewH1641 cudH1625, it is uncleanH2931 to you. 8You shall not eatH398 of their fleshH1320 norH3808 touchH5060 their carcassesH5038; they are uncleanH2931 to you.

9‘5TheseH2088 you may eatH398, whateverH3605H834 is in the waterH4325: allH3605 that have finsH5579 and scalesH7193, those in the waterH4325, in the seasH3220 or in the riversH5158, you may eatH398. 106But whateverH3605H834 is in the seasH3220 and in the riversH5158 that does not haveH369 finsH5579 and scalesH7193 amongH4480 allH3605 the teemingH8318 lifeH8318 of the waterH4325, and amongH4480 allH3605 the livingH2416 creaturesH5315 that are in the waterH4325, they are detestableH8263 thingsH8263 to you, 11and they shall be 7abhorrentH8263 to you; you may not eatH398 of their fleshH1320, and their carcassesH5038 you shall detestH8262. 12WhateverH3605H834 in the waterH4325 does not haveH369 finsH5579 and scalesH7193 is 8abhorrentH8263 to you.

Avoid the Unclean

13‘TheseH428, moreover, 9you shall detestH8262 amongH4480 the birdsH5775; they are 10abhorrentH8263, not to be eatenH398: the 11eagleH5404 and the vultureH6538 and the 12buzzardH5822, 14and the kiteH1676 and the falconH344 in its kindH4327, 15everyH3605 ravenH6158 in its kindH4327, 16and the ostrichH3284 and the owlH8464 and the seaH7828 gullH7828 and the hawkH5322 in its kindH4327, 17and the littleH3563 owlH3563 and the cormorantH7994 and the 13greatH3244 owlH3244, 18and the whiteH8580 owlH8580 and the 14pelicanH6893 and the carrionH7360 vultureH7360, 19and the storkH2624, the heronH601 in its kindsH4327, and the hoopoeH1744, and the batH5847.

20‘AllH3605 the 15wingedH5775 insectsH8318 that walkH1980 on all foursH702 are detestableH8263 to you. 21YetH389 theseH2088 you may eatH398 amongH4480 allH3605 the 16wingedH5775 insectsH8318 which walkH1980 on all foursH702: those whichH834 have aboveH4480H4605 their feetH7272 jointed legsH3767 with whichH1992 to jumpH5425 on the earthH776. 22TheseH428 of them you may eatH398: the locustH697 in its kindsH4327, and the devastatingH5556 locustH5556 in its kindsH4327, and the cricketH2728 in its kindsH4327, and the grasshopperH2284 in its kindsH4327. 23But allH3605 other 17wingedH5775 insectsH8318 whichH834 are four-footedH702H7272 are detestableH8263 to you.

24‘By theseH428, moreover, you will be madeH2930 uncleanH2930: whoeverH3605 touchesH5060 their carcassesH5038 becomesH2930 uncleanH2930 untilH5704 eveningH6153, 25and 18whoeverH3605 picksH5375 up anyH4480 of their carcassesH5038 shall washH3526 his clothesH899 and be uncleanH2930 untilH5704 eveningH6153. 26Concerning allH3605 the animalsH929 whichH834 divideH6536 the hoofH6541 but do not makeH8156 a splitH8156 hoof, or which do not chewH5927 cudH1625, they are uncleanH2931 to you: whoeverH3605 touchesH5060 them becomesH2930 uncleanH2930. 27Also whateverH3605 walksH1980 on its pawsH3709, among allH3605 the creaturesH2421 that walkH1980 on all foursH702, are uncleanH2931 to you; whoeverH3605 touchesH5060 their carcassesH5038 becomesH2930 uncleanH2930 untilH5704 eveningH6153, 28and the one who picksH5375 up their carcassesH5038 shall washH3526 his clothesH899 and be uncleanH2930 untilH5704 eveningH6153; they are uncleanH2931 to you.

29‘Now theseH2088 are to you the uncleanH2931 among the swarmingH8318 thingsH8318 which swarmH8317 on the earthH776: the moleH2467, and the mouseH5909, and the 19greatH6632 lizardH6632 in its kindsH4327, 30and the geckoH604, and the 20crocodileH3581, and the lizardH3911, and the 21sandH2546 reptileH2546, and the chameleonH8580. 31TheseH428 are to you the uncleanH2931 among allH3605 the swarmingH8318 thingsH8318; whoeverH3605 touchesH5060 them when they are deadH4194 becomesH2930 uncleanH2930 untilH5704 eveningH6153. 32Also anythingH3605 on whichH834 one of them may fallH5307 when they are deadH4194 becomesH2930 uncleanH2930, includingH4480 anyH3605 woodenH6086 articleH3627, orH176 clothingH899, orH176 a skinH5785, orH176 a sackH8242--anyH3605 articleH3627 22of whichH834 useH4399 is madeH6213--23it shall be putH935 in the waterH4325 and be uncleanH2930 untilH5704 eveningH6153, then it becomesH2891 cleanH2891. 33As for anyH3605 24earthenwareH2789 vesselH3627 into whichH834 one of them may fallH5307, whateverH3605H834 is in it becomesH2930 uncleanH2930 and you shall breakH7665 25the vessel. 34AnyH4480H3605 of the 26foodH400 whichH834 may be eatenH398, on whichH834 waterH4325 comesH935, shall becomeH2930 uncleanH2930, and anyH3605 27liquidH4945 whichH834 may be drunkH8354 in everyH3605 vesselH3627 shall becomeH2930 uncleanH2930. 35EverythingH3605, moreover, on whichH834 part of their carcassH5038 may fallH5307 becomesH2930 uncleanH2930; an ovenH8574 or a 28stoveH3600 shall be smashedH5422; they are uncleanH2931 and shall continueH1961 as uncleanH2931 to you. 36NeverthelessH389 a springH4599 or a cisternH953 29collectingH4723 waterH4325 shall be cleanH2889, though the one who touchesH5060 their carcassH5038 shall be uncleanH2930. 37IfH3588 a part of their carcassH5038 fallsH5307 on anyH3605 seedH2233 for sowingH2221 whichH834 is to be sownH2232, it is cleanH2889. 38Though ifH3588 waterH4325 is putH5414 on the seedH2233 and a part of their carcassH5038 fallsH5307 on it, it is uncleanH2931 to you.

39‘Also ifH3588 one of the animalsH929 diesH4191 whichH834 you have for foodH402, the one who touchesH5060 its carcassH5038 becomesH2930 uncleanH2930 untilH5704 eveningH6153. 4030He too, who eatsH398 someH4480 of its carcassH5038 shall washH3526 his clothesH899 and be uncleanH2930 untilH5704 eveningH6153, and the one who picksH5375 up its carcassH5038 shall washH3526 his clothesH899 and be uncleanH2930 untilH5704 eveningH6153.

41‘31Now everyH3605 swarmingH8318 thingH8318 that swarmsH8317 on the earthH776 is detestableH8263, not to be eatenH398. 42WhateverH3605 crawlsH1980 on its bellyH1512, and whateverH3605 walksH1980 on all foursH702, whateverH3605 has manyH7235 feetH7272, in respect to everyH3605 swarmingH8318 thingH8318 that swarmsH8317 on the earthH776, you shall not eatH398 them, for they are detestableH8263. 4332Do not renderH8262 33yourselvesH5315 detestableH8262 through anyH3605 of the swarmingH8318 thingsH8318 that swarmH8317; and you shall not makeH2930 yourselves uncleanH2930 with them so that you becomeH2930 uncleanH2930. 44For 34I am the LordH3068 your GodH430. ConsecrateH6942 yourselves therefore, and 35be holyH6918, for I am holyH6918. And you shall not makeH2930 yourselvesH5315 uncleanH2930 with anyH3605 of the swarmingH8318 thingsH8318 that swarmH7430 on the earthH776. 4536For I am the LordH3068 who broughtH5927 you up from the landH776 of EgyptH4714 to be your GodH430; thus 37you shall be holyH6918, for I am holyH6918.’”

46ThisH2088 is the lawH8451 regarding the animalH929 and the birdH5775, and everyH3605 livingH2416 thingH2416 that movesH7430 in the watersH4325 and everythingH3605 that swarmsH8317 on the earthH776, 4738to makeH914 a distinctionH914 betweenH996 the uncleanH2931 and the cleanH2889, and betweenH996 the edibleH398 creatureH2421 and the creatureH2421 whichH834 is not to be eatenH398.
