Isaiah Encourages Hezekiah
11And when KingH4428 HezekiahH2396 heardH8085 it, he 2toreH7167 his clothesH899, 3coveredH3680 himself with sackclothH8242 and enteredH935 the houseH1004 of the LordH3068. 2Then he sentH7971 EliakimH471 whoH834 was overH5921 the householdH1004 with ShebnaH7644 the scribeH5613 and the eldersH2205 of the priestsH3548, 4coveredH3680 with sackclothH8242, to 5IsaiahH3470 the prophetH5030 the sonH1121 of AmozH531. 3They saidH559 to him, “ThusH3541 saysH559 HezekiahH2396, ‘ThisH2088 dayH3117 is a dayH3117 of distressH6869, rebukeH8433, and rejectionH5007; for childrenH1121 have comeH935 to birthH4866 and thereH369 is noH369 strengthH3581 to deliver. 46PerhapsH194 the LordH3068 your GodH430 will hearH8085 allH3605 the wordsH1697 of RabshakehH7262, whomH834 his masterH113 the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 has sentH7971 7to reproachH2778 the livingH2416 GodH430, and will rebukeH3198 the wordsH1697 whichH834 the LordH3068 your GodH430 has heardH8085. Therefore, offerH5375 a prayerH8605 for 8the remnantH7611 that is leftH4672.’” 5So the servantsH5650 of KingH4428 HezekiahH2396 cameH935 to IsaiahH3470. 6IsaiahH3470 saidH559 to them, “ThusH3541 you shall sayH559 to your masterH113, ‘ThusH3541 saysH559 the LordH3068, “Do not be afraidH3372 becauseH4480H6440 of the wordsH1697 that you have heardH8085, with whichH834 the 9servantsH5288 of the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 10have blasphemedH1442 Me. 7BeholdH2009, I will putH5414 a spiritH7307 in him so that 11he will hearH8085 a rumorH8052 and returnH7725 to his own landH776. And 12I will make him fallH5307 by the swordH2719 in his own landH776.”’”
Sennacherib Defies God
8Then RabshakehH7262 returnedH7725 and foundH4672 the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 fightingH3898 againstH5921 13LibnahH3841, for he had heardH8085 that 14the king had leftH5265 15LachishH3923. 9When he heardH8085 them sayH559 concerningH413 TirhakahH8640 kingH4428 of 16CushH3568, “BeholdH2009, he has comeH3318 out to fightH3898 againstH854 you,” he sentH7971 messengersH4397 againH7725 to HezekiahH2396 sayingH559, 10“ThusH3541 you shall sayH559 to HezekiahH2396 kingH4428 of 17JudahH3063, ‘Do not 18let your GodH430 in whomH834 you trustH982 deceiveH5378 you sayingH559, “19JerusalemH3389 will not be givenH5414 into the handH3027 of the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804.” 11BeholdH2009, you have heardH8085 whatH834 the kingsH4428 of AssyriaH804 have doneH6213 to allH3605 the landsH776, destroyingH2763 them completelyH2763. So will you be 20sparedH5337? 1221Did the godsH430 of 22those nationsH1471 whichH834 my fathersH1 destroyedH7843 deliverH5337 them, even 23GozanH1470 and 24HaranH2771 and RezephH7530 and 25the sonsH1121 of EdenH5729 whoH834 were in TelassarH8515? 1326WhereH335 is the kingH4428 of HamathH2574, the kingH4428 of ArpadH774, the kingH4428 of the cityH5892 of SepharvaimH5617, and of HenaH2012 and IvvahH5755?’”
Hezekiah’s Prayer
14Then 27HezekiahH2396 tookH3947 the 28letterH5612 from the handH3027 of the messengersH4397 and readH7121 it, and he wentH5927 up to the houseH1004 of the LordH3068 and 29spreadH6566 it out beforeH6440 the LordH3068. 15HezekiahH2396 prayedH6419 beforeH6440 the LordH3068 and saidH559, “O LordH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, 30who are 31enthronedH3427 above the cherubimH3742, 32You are the GodH430, You aloneH905, of allH3605 the kingdomsH4467 of the earthH776. You have madeH6213 heavenH8064 and earthH776. 1633InclineH5186 Your earH241, O LordH3068, and hearH8085; 34openH6491 Your eyesH5869, O LordH3068, and seeH7200; and listenH8085 to the wordsH1697 of SennacheribH5576, whichH834 he has sentH7971 35to reproachH2778 the livingH2416 GodH430. 17TrulyH551, O LordH3068, the kingsH4428 of AssyriaH804 have devastatedH2717 the nationsH1471 and their landsH776 18and have castH5414 their godsH430 into the fireH784, 36for they were not godsH430 but the workH4639 of men’sH120 handsH3027, woodH6086 and stoneH68. So they have destroyedH6 them. 19NowH6258, O LordH3068 our GodH430, I prayH4994, deliverH3467 us from his handH3027 37that allH3605 the kingdomsH4467 of the earthH776 may knowH3045 that You aloneH905, O 38LordH3068, are GodH430.”
God’s Answer through Isaiah
20Then IsaiahH3470 the sonH1121 of AmozH531 sentH7971 to HezekiahH2396 sayingH559, “ThusH3541 saysH559 the LordH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, ‘BecauseH834 you have prayedH6419 to Me aboutH413 SennacheribH5576 kingH4428 of AssyriaH804, 39I have heardH8085 you.’ 21ThisH2088 is the wordH1697 that the LordH3068 has spokenH1696 againstH5921 him: ‘She has despisedH959 you and mockedH3932 you, 40The virginH1330 daughterH1323 of ZionH6726; She 41has shakenH5128 her headH7218 behindH310 you, The daughterH1323 of JerusalemH3389!22WhomH4310 have you 42reproachedH2778 and 43blasphemedH1442? And againstH5921 whomH4310 have you raisedH7311 your voiceH6963, And 44haughtilyH4791 liftedH5375 up your eyesH5869? AgainstH5921 the 45HolyH6918 OneH6918 of IsraelH3478!2346ThroughH3027 your messengersH4397 you have reproachedH2778 the LordH136, And you have saidH559, “With my manyH7230 chariotsH7393 I cameH5927 up to the heightsH4791 of the mountainsH2022, To the remotestH3411 partsH3411 of LebanonH3844; And I 47cutH3772 downH3772 its tallH6967 cedarsH730 and its choiceH4004 cypressesH1265. And I 48enteredH935 its farthestH7093 lodgingH4411 placeH4411, its 49thickestH3759 forestH3293.24I dugH6979 wells and drankH8354 foreignH2114 watersH4325, And with the soleH3709 of my feetH6471 I 5051driedH2717 up AllH3605 the riversH2975 of 52EgyptH4693.”
25‘53Have you not heardH8085? LongH7350 agoH7350 I didH6213 it; From ancientH6924 timesH3117H6924 I plannedH3335 it. 54NowH6258 I have broughtH935 it to passH935, That you should turnH1961H7582 fortifiedH1219 citiesH5892 into ruinousH5327 heapsH1530.26Therefore their inhabitantsH3427 were shortH7116 of strengthH3027, They were dismayedH2865 and putH954 to shameH954; They were 55as the vegetationH6212 of the fieldH7704 and as the greenH3419 herbH1877, As grassH2682 on the housetopsH1406 is scorchedH7711 beforeH6440 it is grownH7054 up.27But 56I knowH3045 your sittingH3427 downH3427, And your goingH3318 out and your comingH935 in, And your ragingH7264 againstH413 Me.28BecauseH3282 of your ragingH7264 againstH413 Me, And because your 57arroganceH7600 has comeH5927 up to My earsH241, Therefore I 58will putH7760 My hookH2397 in your noseH639, And My bridleH4964 in your lipsH8193, And 59I will turnH7725 you backH7725 by the wayH1870 whichH834 you cameH935.
29‘Then thisH2088 shall be 60the signH226 for you: 61you will eatH398 this yearH8141 whatH5599 growsH5599 of itself, in the secondH8145 yearH8141 whatH5501 springsH5501 from the same, and in the thirdH7992 yearH8141 sowH2232, reapH7114, plantH5193 vineyardsH3754, and eatH398 their fruitH6529. 3062The survivingH7604 remnantH7604 of the houseH1004 of JudahH3063 will againH3254 take rootH8328 downwardH4295 and bearH6213 fruitH6529 upwardH4605. 31For out of JerusalemH3389 will goH3318 forthH3318 a remnantH7611, and 63out of MountH2022 ZionH6726 64survivorsH6413. 65The zealH7068 of 66the LordH3068 will performH6213 thisH2088.
32‘ThereforeH3651 thusH3541 saysH559 the LordH3068 concerningH413 the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804, “67He will not comeH935 to thisH2088 cityH5892 or shootH3384 an arrowH2671 thereH8033; and he will not comeH6923 beforeH6923 it with a shieldH4043 orH3808 throwH8210 up a siegeH5550 rampH5550 againstH5921 it. 3368By the wayH1870 that he cameH935, by the same he will returnH7725, and he shall not comeH935 to thisH2088 cityH5892,”’ declaresH5002 the LordH3068. 34‘69For I will defendH1598 thisH2088 cityH5892 to saveH3467 it for My own sakeH4616 and 70for My servantH5650 David’sH1732 sakeH4616.’”
3571Then it happenedH1961 that nightH3915 that the angelH4397 of the LordH3068 wentH3318 out and struckH5221 185,000H3967H8084H2568H505 in the campH4264 of the AssyriansH804; and when 72men roseH7925 earlyH7925 in the morningH1242, beholdH2009, allH3605 of them were 73deadH4191H6297. 36So 74SennacheribH5576 kingH4428 of AssyriaH804 departedH5265 and returnedH7725 home, and livedH3427 at 75NinevehH5210. 37It cameH1961 about as he was worshipingH7812 in the houseH1004 of NisrochH5268 his godH430, that 7677AdrammelechH152 and SharezerH8272 killedH5221 him with the swordH2719; and they escapedH4422 into 78the landH776 of AraratH780. And 79EsarhaddonH634 his sonH1121 becameH4427 kingH4427 in his placeH8478.
