Saul and the Spirit Medium

1Now it cameH1961 about in thoseH1992 daysH3117 that 1the PhilistinesH6430 gatheredH6908 their armed campsH4264 for warH6633, to fightH3898 against IsraelH3478. And AchishH397 saidH559 to DavidH1732, “KnowH3045 assuredlyH3045 that you will goH3318 out with me in the campH4264, you and your menH376.” 2DavidH1732 saidH559 to AchishH397, “VeryH3651 wellH3651, you shall knowH3045 whatH834 your servantH5650 can doH6213.” So AchishH397 saidH559 to DavidH1732, “VeryH3651 wellH3651, I will makeH7760 you 2my bodyguardH8104H7218 3for lifeH3605H3117.”

3Now 4SamuelH8050 was deadH4191, and allH3605 IsraelH3478 had lamentedH5594 him and buriedH6912 him 5in RamahH7414, his own cityH5892. And SaulH7586 had removedH5493 from the landH776 those who 6were mediumsH178 and spiritistsH3049. 4So the PhilistinesH6430 gatheredH6908 together and cameH935 and campedH2583 7in ShunemH7766; and SaulH7586 gatheredH6908 allH3605 IsraelH3478 together and they campedH2583 in 8GilboaH1533. 5When SaulH7586 sawH7200 the campH4264 of the PhilistinesH6430, he was afraidH3372 and his heartH3820 trembledH2729 greatlyH3966. 69When SaulH7586 inquiredH7592 of the LordH3068, 10the LordH3068 did not answerH6030 him, eitherH1571 by 11dreamsH2472 orH1571 by 12UrimH224 orH1571 by prophetsH5030. 7Then SaulH7586 saidH559 to his servantsH5650, “SeekH1875 for me a womanH802 who is a mediumH1172H178, that I may goH1980 to her and inquireH1875 of her.” And his servantsH5650 saidH559 to him, “BeholdH2009, 13there is a womanH802 who is a mediumH1172H178 at 14En-dorH5874.”

8Then SaulH7586 15disguisedH2664 himself by puttingH3847 on otherH312 clothesH899, and wentH1980, he and twoH8147 menH376 with him, and they cameH935 to the womanH802 by nightH3915; and he saidH559, “16ConjureH7080 up for me, pleaseH4994, and 17bringH5927 up for me whomH834 I shall 18nameH559 to you.” 9But the womanH802 saidH559 to him, “BeholdH2009, you knowH3045 19whatH834 SaulH7586 has doneH6213, howH834 he has cutH3772 offH3772 those who are mediumsH178 and spiritistsH3049 from the landH776. WhyH4100 are you then layingH5367 a snareH5367 for my lifeH5315 to bringH4191 about my deathH4191?” 10SaulH7586 vowedH7650 to her by the LordH3068, sayingH559, “As the LordH3068 livesH2416, noH518 punishmentH5771 shall comeH7136 upon you for thisH2088 thingH1697.” 11Then the womanH802 saidH559, “WhomH4310 shall I bringH5927 up for you?” And he saidH559, “BringH5927 up SamuelH8050 for me.” 12When the womanH802 sawH7200 SamuelH8050, she criedH2199 out with a loudH1419 voiceH6963; and the womanH802 spokeH559 to SaulH7586, sayingH559, “WhyH4100 have you deceivedH7411 me? For you are SaulH7586.” 13The kingH4428 saidH559 to her, “Do not be afraidH3372; but whatH4100 do you seeH7200?” And the womanH802 saidH559 to SaulH7586, “I seeH7200 a 20divineH430 beingH430 comingH5927 up out of the earthH776.” 14He saidH559 to her, “WhatH4100 is his formH8389?” And she saidH559, “An oldH2205 manH376 is comingH5927 up, and 21he is wrappedH5844 with a robeH4598.” And SaulH7586 knewH3045 that it was SamuelH8050, and 22he bowedH6915 with his faceH639 to the groundH776 and did homageH7812.

15Then SamuelH8050 saidH559 to SaulH7586, “WhyH4100 have you disturbedH7264 me by bringingH5927 me up?” And SaulH7586 answeredH6030, “I am greatlyH3966 distressedH6887; for the PhilistinesH6430 are wagingH3898 warH3898 against me, and 23GodH430 has departedH5493 from me and 24noH3808 longerH5750 answersH6030 me, eitherH1571 throughH3027 prophetsH5030 orH1571 by dreamsH2472; therefore I have calledH7121 you, that you may makeH3045 knownH3045 to me whatH4100 I should doH6213.” 16SamuelH8050 saidH559, “WhyH4100 then do you askH7592 me, since the LordH3068 has departedH5493 from you and has becomeH1961 your adversaryH6145? 17The LordH3068 has doneH6213 25accordinglyH3512 26as He spokeH1696 throughH3027 me; for the LordH3068 has tornH7167 the kingdomH4467 out of your handH3027 and givenH5414 it to your neighborH7453, to DavidH1732. 18As 27you did not 28obeyH8085H6963 the LordH3068 and did not executeH6213 His fierceH2740 wrathH639 on AmalekH6002, soH5921H3651 the LordH3068 has doneH6213 thisH2088 thingH1697 to you thisH2088 dayH3117. 19Moreover the LordH3068 will alsoH1571 giveH5414 over IsraelH3478 alongH5973 with you into the handsH3027 of the PhilistinesH6430, therefore tomorrowH4279 29you and your sonsH1121 will be with me. IndeedH1571 the LordH3068 will giveH5414 over the armyH4264 of IsraelH3478 into the handsH3027 of the PhilistinesH6430!”

20Then SaulH7586 immediatelyH4116 fellH5307 fullH4393 lengthH6967 upon the groundH776 and was veryH3966 afraidH3372 becauseH4480 of the wordsH1697 of SamuelH8050; alsoH1571 there was noH3808 strengthH3581 in him, for he had eatenH398 noH3808 30foodH3899 allH3605 dayH3117 and allH3605 nightH3915. 21The womanH802 cameH935 to SaulH7586 and sawH7200 that he was terrifiedH926, and saidH559 to him, “BeholdH2009, your maidservantH8198 has 31obeyedH8085H6963 you, and 32I have 33takenH7760 my lifeH5315 in my handH3709 and have listenedH8085 to your wordsH1697 whichH834 you spokeH1696 to me. 22So nowH6258 alsoH1571, pleaseH4994 listenH8085 to the voiceH6963 of your maidservantH8198, and let me setH7760 a pieceH6595 of breadH3899 beforeH6440 you that you may eatH398 and haveH1961 strengthH3581 whenH3588 you goH1980 on your wayH1870.” 23But he refusedH3985 and saidH559, “34I will not eatH398.” 35However, his servantsH5650 togetherH1571 with the womanH802 urgedH6555 him, and he listenedH8085 to 36them. So he aroseH6965 from the groundH776 and satH3427 on 37the bedH4296. 24The womanH802 had a 38fattenedH4770 calfH5695 in the houseH1004, and she quicklyH4116 slaughteredH2076 it; and she 39tookH3947 flourH7058, kneadedH3888 it and bakedH644 unleavenedH4682 breadH4682 from it. 25She broughtH5066 it beforeH6440 SaulH7586 and his servantsH5650, and they ateH398. Then they aroseH6965 and wentH1980 away that nightH3915.
