3For whenHerodἩρῴδηςHērōdēsG2264had JohnἸωάννηνIōannēnG2491arrestedκρατήσαςkratēsasG2902,he boundἔδησενedēsenG1210him and putἀπέθετοapethetoG659himin prisonφυλακῇphulakēaG5438becauseδιὰdiaG1223ofHerodiasἩρῳδιάδαHērōdiadaG2266,the wifeγυναῖκαgunaikaG1135of his brotherἀδελφοῦadelphouG80PhilipΦιλίππουPhilippouG5376.

4For JohnἸωάννηςIōannēsG2491had been sayingἔλεγενelegenG3004to him, “It is not lawfulἔξεστίνexestinG1832for you to haveἔχεινecheinG2192her.”

5Although Herod wantedθέλωνthelōnG2309to putG615him to deathG615,he fearedἐφοβήθηephobēthēG5399the crowdὄχλονochlonG3793,becauseὅτιhotiG3754they regardedεἶχον.¶eichonG2192JohnG846asa prophetπροφήτηνprophētēnG4396.

6But when Herod’sἩρῴδουHērōdouG2264birthdayΓενεσίοιςGenesioisG1077cameγενομένοιςgenomenoisG1096,the daughterθυγάτηρthugatērG2364ofHerodiasἩρῳδιάδοςHērōdiadosG2266dancedὠρχήσατοōrchēsatoG3738beforeἐν μέσῳen mesōG1722 G3319themand pleasedἤρεσενēresenG700HerodἩρῴδῃ·HērōdēG2264,

7soὅθενhothenG3606muchthat he promisedὡμολόγησενhōmologēsenG3670with an oathὅρκουhorkouG3727to giveδοῦναιdounaiG1325her whateverὃ ἐὰνho eanG3739 G1437she askedαἰτήσηται.aitēsētaiG154.

8Having been promptedπροβιβασθεῖσαprobibastheisaG4264by her motherμητρὸςmētrosG3384,she saidφησὶνphēsinG5346, “GiveδόςdosG1325me hereὧδεhōdeG5602on a platterπίνακιpinakiG4094the headκεφαλὴνkephalēnG2776of JohnἸωάννουIōannouG2491the Baptistβαπτιστοῦ.baptistouG910.”

9Although he was grievedλυπηθεὶςlupētheisG3076,the kingβασιλεὺςbasileusG935commandedἐκέλευσενekeleusenG2753itto be givenδοθῆναι.dothēnaiG1325becauseδιὰdiaG1223of his oathsὅρκουςhorkousG3727, and because ofhis dinnerG4873guestsG4873.

10He sentπέμψαςpempsasG3992and had JohnἸωάννηνIōannēnG2491beheadedἀπεκεφάλισενapekephalisenG607in the prisonφυλακῇ.phulakēaG5438.
