Nehemiah 9

Darby Bible

1And on the twenty-fourth dayH3117 of this monthH2320 the children of IsraelH3478 were assembled with fastingH6685, and with sackclothes, and earthH127 upon them. 2And the seedH2233 of IsraelH3478 separatedH914 themselves from all foreigners, and stoodH5975 and confessedH3034 their sinsH2403, and the iniquitiesH5771 of their fathersH1. 3And they stoodH6965 up in their placeH5977, and readH7121 in the bookH5612 of the lawH8451 of Jehovah their 1GodH430 a fourthH7243 part of the dayH3117; and a fourthH7243 part they confessedH3034, and worshipped Jehovah their 2GodH430. 4Then stoodH6965 up upon the platform of the LevitesH3881, JeshuaH3442, and BaniH1137, KadmielH6934, ShebaniahH7645, BunniH1138, SherebiahH8274, BaniH1137, Chenani, and criedH2199 with a loud voiceH6963 to Jehovah their 3GodH430. 5And the LevitesH3881, JeshuaH3442, and KadmielH6934, BaniH1137, Hashabniah, SherebiahH8274, Hodijah, ShebaniahH7645, PethahiahH6611, saidH559, StandH6965 up, blessH1288 Jehovah your 4GodH430 from eternity to eternity. And let [men] blessH1288 the nameH8034 of thy gloryH3519, which is exaltedH7311 above all blessingH1293 and praiseH8416. 6Thou art the Same, thou aloneH905, Jehovah, who hast madeH6213 the heavenH8064 of heavensH8064, and all their hostH6635, the earthH776 and all that is therein, the seasH3220 and all that is therein. And thou quickenest them all; and the hostH6635 of heavenH8064 worshippeth thee. 7Thou art the Same, Jehovah Elohim, who didst chooseH977 AbramH87 and broughtest him forthH3318 out of Ur of the Chaldees, and gavest him the nameH8034 of AbrahamH85; 8and foundest his heartH3824 faithfulH539 before thee, and madest the covenantH1285 with him to giveH5414 the landH776 of the CanaanitesH3669, the HittitesH2850, the AmoritesH567, and the Perizzites, and the Jebusites, and the Girgashites, — to giveH5414 it to his seedH2233; and thou hast performed thy wordsH1697, for thou art righteousH6662. 9And thou sawest the affliction of our fathersH1 in EgyptH4714, and heardest their cryH2201 by the Red SeaH3220; 10and didst shew signsH226 and wondersH4159 upon PharaohH6547, and upon all his servantsH5650, and upon all the peopleH5971 of his landH776; for thou knewest that they dealt proudly against them, and thou didst makeH5414 thee a nameH8034, as it is this dayH3117. 11And thou didst divide the seaH3220 before them, and they went through the midstH8432 of the seaH3220 on dryH3004 [groundH3004]; and their pursuersH7291 thou threwest into the depthsH4688, as a stoneH68 into the mightyH5794 watersH4325. 12And thou leddest them in the dayH3119 by a pillarH5982 of cloudH6051, and in the nightH3915 by a pillarH5982 of fireH784, to giveH215 them lightH215 in the wayH1870 wherein they should go. 13And thou camest downH3381 on mount SinaiH5514, and didst speakH1696 with them from the heavensH8064, and gavest them rightH3477 judgmentsH4941 and true lawsH8451, goodH2896 statutesH2706 and commandmentsH4687. 14And thou madest knownH3045 unto them thy holyH6944 sabbathH7676, and prescribedst for them commandmentsH4687 and statutesH2706 and a lawH8451, through MosesH4872 thy servantH5650. 15And thou gavest them breadH3899 from the heavensH8064 for their hungerH7458, and broughtest forthH3318 waterH4325 for them out of the rockH5553 for their thirstH6772, and didst sayH559 to them that they should goH3318 in to possessH3423 the landH776 which thou hadst sworn to giveH5414 them. 16But they, our fathersH1, dealt proudly, and hardenedH7185 their neckH6203, and hearkened not to thy commandmentsH4687, 17and refusedH3985 to obey, neither were they mindful of thy wondersH6381 which thou hadst done among them; but hardenedH7185 their neckH6203, and in their rebellionH4805 madeH6213 a captain to returnH7725 to their bondage. But thou art a 5GodH433 ready to forgive, graciousH2587 and merciful, slow to angerH639 and of greatH7227 loving-kindness, and thou forsookest them not. 18Yea, when they had madeH6213 them a molten calfH5695, and saidH559, This is thy 6godH430 that broughtH5927 thee up out of EgyptH4714! and they had wrought greatH1419 provocation, 19yet thou in thy manifold mercies forsookest them not in the wildernessH4057. The pillarH5982 of the cloudH6051 departedH5493 not from over them by dayH3119, to leadH5148 them on the wayH1870; neither the pillarH5982 of fireH784 by nightH3915, to shew them lightH215, and the wayH1870 wherein they should go. 20Thou gavest also thy goodH2896 SpiritH7307 to instruct them, and withheldest not thy mannaH4478 from their mouthH6310, and gavest them waterH4325 for their thirstH6772. 21Yea, fortyH705 yearsH8141 didst thou sustainH3557 them in the wildernessH4057; they lackedH2637 nothing; their clothesH8008 grew not old, and their feetH7272 swelled not. 22And thou gavest them kingdomsH4467 and peoplesH5971, and didst divideH2505 them by countries; and they possessedH3423 the landH776 of SihonH5511, as well the landH776 of the kingH4428 of HeshbonH2809, as the landH776 of OgH5747 kingH4428 of BashanH1316. 23And their children thou didst multiplyH7235 as the starsH3556 of heavenH8064, and thou broughtest them into the landH776 concerningH413 which thou didst sayH559 to their fathersH1 that they should goH935 in to possessH3423 it. 24And the children wentH935 in and possessedH3423 the landH776; and thou subduedst before them the inhabitantsH3427 of the landH776, the CanaanitesH3669, and gavest them into their handsH3027, both their kingsH4428 and the peoplesH5971 of the landH776, that they might do with them as they would. 25And they tookH3920 strong citiesH5892, and a fatH8080 landH127, and possessedH3423 housesH1004 fullH4392 of all goodH2898 things, wells digged, vineyardsH3754 and olive-gardens, and fruit treesH6086 in abundanceH7230. And they did eatH398 and were filled, and became fatH8080, and delighted themselves in thy greatH1419 goodnessH2898. 26But they were disobedientH4784, and rebelledH4784 against thee, and castH7993 thy lawH8451 behind their backsH1458, and slewH2026 thy prophetsH5030 who testifiedH5749 against them to turnH7725 them to thee, and they wrought greatH1419 provocations. 27And thou gavest them into the handH3027 of their oppressors, and they oppressed them; and in the timeH6256 of their distressH6869, when they criedH6817 unto thee, thou heardest them from the heavensH8064, and according to thy manifold mercies thou gavest them saviours, who savedH3467 them out of the handH3027 of their oppressors. 28But when they had restH5117, they did evilH7451 again before thee; and thou didst leaveH5800 them in the handH3027 of their enemiesH341, and they had dominion over them; and again they criedH2199 unto thee, and thou heardest [them] from the heavensH8064, and manyH7227 timesH6256 didst thou deliverH5337 them, according to thy mercies. 29And thou testifiedst against them, that thou mightest bringH7725 them again unto thy lawH8451; but they dealt proudly, and hearkened not unto thy commandmentsH4687, but sinnedH2398 against thine ordinancesH4941 (which if a manH120 do, he shall liveH2421 in them); and they withdrew the shoulderH3802, and hardenedH7185 their neckH6203, and would not hearH8085. 30And manyH7227 yearsH8141 didst thou forbear with them, and testifiedst against them by thy SpiritH7307 through thy prophetsH5030; but they would not giveH5414 earH238: and thou gavest them into the handH3027 of the peoplesH5971 of the landsH776. 31Nevertheless for thy manifold mercies' sake, thou didst not makeH6213 a full end of them nor forsakeH5800 them; for thou art a graciousH2587 and merciful 7GodH410. 32And nowH6258, our 8GodH430, the greatH1419, the mightyH1368, and the terrible 9GodH430, who keepest covenantH1285 and loving-kindness, let not all the trouble seem littleH4591 before thee, that hath comeH4672 upon us, on our kingsH4428, on our princesH8269, and on our priestsH3548, and on our prophetsH5030, and on our fathersH1, and on all thy peopleH5971, since the daysH3117 of the kingsH4428 of AssyriaH804 unto this dayH3117. 33But thou art just in all that is comeH935 upon us; for thou hast actedH7561 according to truthH571, and we have done wickedlyH7561. 34And our kingsH4428, our princesH8269, our priestsH3548, and our fathersH1, have not performed thy lawH8451, nor hearkened unto thy commandmentsH4687 and thy testimoniesH5715, wherewith thou didst testify against them. 35And they have not servedH5647 thee in their kingdomH4438, and in thy greatH7227 goodnessH2898 that thou gavest them, and in the large and fat landH776 that thou didst setH5414 before them, neither turnedH7725 they from their wickedH7451 worksH5647. 36Behold, we are servantsH5650 this dayH3117, and the landH776 that thou gavest unto our fathersH1 to eatH398 the fruitH6529 thereof and the goodH2898 thereof, behold, we are bondmen in it. 37And it yieldeth muchH7235 increaseH7235 unto the kingsH4428 whom thou hast setH5414 over us because of our sinsH2403: and they have dominionH4910 over our bodiesH1472, and over our cattleH929, at their pleasureH7522; and we are in greatH1419 distressH6869. 38And because of all this we make a sure covenant, and write it; and our princes, our Levites, [and] our priests are at the sealing.
