20and Isaacיִצְחָק֙yitz.ChakH3327wasוַיְהִ֤יvay.HiH1961fortyאַרְבָּעִ֣ים'ar.ba.'ImH705years oldבֶּן־ שָׁנָ֔הben- sha.NahH1121 H8141when he marriedבְּקַחְתּ֣וֹbe.kach.ToH3947אֶת־'et-H853לְאִשָּֽׁה׃le.'i.ShahH802Rebekahרִבְקָ֗הriv.KahH7259,the daughterבַּת־bat-H1323of Bethuelבְּתוּאֵל֙be.tu.'ElH1328the Arameanהָֽאֲרַמִּ֔יha.'a.ra.MiH761from Paddan-aramמִפַּדַּ֖ן אֲרָ֑םmi.pa.Dan 'a.RamH6307 H758and the sisterאֲח֛וֹת'a.ChotH269of Labanלָבָ֥ןla.VanH3837the Arameanהָאֲרַמִּ֖יha.'a.ra.MiH761.

21Later, Isaacיִצְחָ֤קyitz.ChakH3327prayedוַיֶּעְתַּ֨רvai.ye'.TarH6279to the LORDלַֽיהוָה֙la.Yah.wehH3068on behalf ofלְנֹ֣כַחle.No.khachH5227his wifeאִשְׁתּ֔וֹ'ish.ToH802,becauseכִּ֥יkiH3588sheהִ֑ואhi'H1931wasbarrenעֲקָרָ֖ה'a.ka.RahH6135.And the LORDיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068heard his prayerוַיֵּעָ֤תֶרvai.ye.'A.terH6279,and his wifeאִשְׁתּֽוֹ׃'ish.ToH802Rebekahרִבְקָ֥הriv.KahH7259conceivedוַתַּ֖הַרva.Ta.harH2029.

22But the childrenהַבָּנִים֙ha.ba.NimH1121inside herבְּקִרְבָּ֔הּbe.kir.BahH7130struggled with each otherוַיִּתְרֹֽצֲצ֤וּvai.yit.ro.tza.TzuH7533,and she saidוַתֹּ֣אמֶר אִם־ כֵּ֔ןva.To.mer 'im- KenH559 H518 H3651, “Whyלָ֥מָּהLa.mahH4100is thisזֶּ֖הzehH2088happening to meאָנֹ֑כִי'a.No.khiH595?”So Rebekah wentוַתֵּ֖לֶךְva.Te.lekhH1980to inquireלִדְרֹ֥שׁlid.RoshH1875אֶת־'et-H853of the LORDיְהוָֽה׃Yah.wehH3068,

23andיְהוָ֜הYah.wehH3068He declaredto herוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559: “Twoשְׁנֵ֤יshe.NeiH8147nationsגוֹיִם֙go.yimH1471are in your wombבְּבִטְנֵ֔ךְbe.vit.NekhH990,and twoוּשְׁנֵ֣יu.she.NeiH8147peoplesלְאֻמִּ֔יםle.'u.MimH3816from within youמִמֵּעַ֖יִךְmi.me.'A.yikhH4578will be separatedיִפָּרֵ֑דוּyi.pa.Re.duH6504;one peopleוּלְאֹם֙u.le.'OmH3816will be strongerיֶֽאֱמָ֔ץye.'e.MatzH553than the otherמִלְאֹ֣םmil.'OmH3816,and the olderוְרַ֖בve.RavH7227will serveיַעֲבֹ֥דya.'a.VodH5647the youngerצָעִֽיר׃tza.'IrH6810.”

24When her timeיָמֶ֖יהָya.Mei.haH3117cameוַיִּמְלְא֥וּvai.yim.le.'UH4390to give birthלָלֶ֑דֶתla.Le.detH3205,there were indeedוְהִנֵּ֥הve.hi.NehH2009twinsתוֹמִ֖םto.MimH8380in her wombבְּבִטְנָֽהּ׃be.vit.NahH990.

25The firstהָרִאשׁוֹן֙ha.ri.shOnH7223one came outוַיֵּצֵ֤אvai.ye.Tze'H3318redאַדְמוֹנִ֔י כֻּלּ֖וֹ'ad.mo.Ni ku.LoH132 H3605,covered with hairשֵׂעָ֑רse.'ArH8181like a fur coatכְּאַדֶּ֣רֶתke.'a.De.retH155;so they named himוַיִּקְרְא֥וּ שְׁמ֖וֹvai.yik.re.'U she.MoH7121 H8034Esauעֵשָֽׂו׃'e.SavH6215.

26Afterוְאַֽחֲרֵי־ve.'a.cha.rei-H310thisכֵ֞ןkhenH3651,his brotherאָחִ֗יו'a.ChivH251came outיָצָ֣אya.Tza'H3318graspingאֹחֶ֙זֶת֙'o.Che.zetH270Esau’sעֵשָׂ֔ו'e.SavH6215heelבַּעֲקֵ֣בba.'a.KevH6119וְיָד֤וֹve.ya.DoH3027;so he was namedוַיִּקְרָ֥א שְׁמ֖וֹvai.yik.Ra' she.MoH7121 H8034Jacobיַעֲקֹ֑בya.'a.KoH3290.And Isaacוְיִצְחָ֛קve.yitz.ChakH3327was sixtyשִׁשִּׁ֥יםshi.ShimH8346years oldבֶּן־ שָׁנָ֖הben- sha.NahH1121 H8141when the twins were bornבְּלֶ֥דֶתbe.Le.detH3205אֹתָֽם׃'o.TamH853.

27When the boysהַנְּעָרִ֔יםha.ne.'a.RimH5288grew upוַֽיִּגְדְּלוּ֙vai.yig.de.LuH1431,Esauעֵשָׂ֗ו'e.SavH6215becameוַיְהִ֣יvay.HiH1961a skillfulיֹדֵ֥עַyo.De.a'H3045hunterצַ֖יִדTza.yidH6718,a manאִ֛ישׁ'ishH376of the fieldשָׂדֶ֑הsa.DehH7704,while Jacobאִ֣ישׁ וְיַעֲקֹב֙'ish ve.ya.'a.KoH3290 H376was a quietתָּ֔םTamH8535manאִ֣ישׁ'ishH376who stayedיֹשֵׁ֖בyo.ShevH3427at homeאֹהָלִֽים׃'o.ha.LimH168.

28Becauseכִּי־ki-H3588Isaacיִצְחָ֛קyitz.ChakH3327had a tasteבְּפִ֑יוbe.FivH6310for wild gameצַ֣יִדTza.yidH6718אֶת־'et-H853,he lovedוַיֶּאֱהַ֥בvai.ye.'e.HavH157Esauעֵשָׂ֖ו'e.SavH6215;but Rebekahוְרִבְקָ֖הve.riv.KahH7259lovedאֹהֶ֥בֶת'o.He.vetH157אֶֽת־'et-H853Jacobיַעֲקֹֽב׃ya.'a.KoH3290.

29One day, while Jacobיַעֲקֹ֖בya.'a.KoH3290was cookingוַיָּ֥זֶדvai.Ya.zedH2102some stewנָזִ֑ידna.ZidH5138,Esauעֵשָׂ֛ו'e.SavH6215came inוַיָּבֹ֥אvai.ya.Vo'H935fromמִן־min-H4480the fieldהַשָּׂדֶ֖הha.sa.DehH7704andוְה֥וּאve.Hu'H1931was famishedעָיֵֽף׃'a.YefH5889.

30Heעֵשָׂ֜ו'e.SavH6215saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559toאֶֽל־'el-H413Jacobיַעֲקֹ֗בya.'a.KoH3290, “Let me eatהַלְעִיטֵ֤נִי נָא֙hal.'i.Te.ni na'H3938 H4994some ofמִן־min-H4480thatהַזֶּ֔הha.ZehH2088redהָאָדֹ֤םha.'a.DomH122stewהָאָדֹם֙ha.'a.DomH122,forכִּ֥יkiH3588I amאָנֹ֑כִי'a.No.khiH595famishedעָיֵ֖ף'a.YefH5889.” (That is whyעַל־ כֵּ֥ן'al- kenH5921 H3651he was also calledקָרָֽא־ שְׁמ֖וֹka.ra'- she.MoH7121 H8034Edomאֱדֽוֹם׃'e.DomH123.)

31“Firstכַיּ֛וֹםkhai.YomH3117אֶת־'et-H853sellמִכְרָ֥הmikh.RahH4376meyour birthrightבְּכֹֽרָתְךָ֖be.kho.ra.te.KhaH1062,”Jacobיַעֲקֹ֑בya.'a.KoH3290repliedוַיֹּ֖אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559.

32“Lookהִנֵּ֛הhi.NehH2009,”saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559Esauעֵשָׂ֔ו'e.SavH6215, “I amאָנֹכִ֥י'a.no.KhiH595about to dieהוֹלֵ֖ךְ לָמ֑וּתho.Lekh la.MutH1980 H4191,so what goodוְלָמָּה־ זֶּ֥הve.la.mah- zehH4100 H2088is a birthrightבְּכֹרָֽה׃be.kho.RahH1062to me?”

33“Swear to me firstהִשָּׁ֤בְעָהhi.Sha.ve.'ahH7650כַּיּ֔וֹםkai.YomH3117,”Jacobיַעֲקֹ֗בya.'a.KoH3290saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559.So Esau sworeוַיִּשָּׁבַ֖עvai.yi.sha.Va'H7650to Jacoband soldוַיִּמְכֹּ֥רvai.yim.KorH4376אֶת־'et-H853himלְיַעֲקֹֽב׃le.ya.'a.KoH3290the birthrightבְּכֹרָת֖וֹbe.kho.ra.ToH1062.

34Then Jacobוְיַעֲקֹ֞בve.ya.'a.KoH3290gaveנָתַ֣ןna.TanH5414some breadלֶ֚חֶםLe.chemH3899and lentilעֲדָשִׁ֔ים'a.da.ShimH5742stewוּנְזִ֣ידu.ne.ZidH5138to Esauלְעֵשָׂ֗וle.'e.SavH6215, whoateוַיֹּ֣אכַלvai.Yo.khalH398and drankוַיֵּ֔שְׁתְּvai.Ye.shetH8354and then got upוַיָּ֖קָםvai.Ya.komH6965and went awayוַיֵּלַ֑ךְvai.ye.LakhH1980.Thus Esauעֵשָׂ֖ו'e.SavH6215אֶת־'et-H853despisedוַיִּ֥בֶזvai.Yi.vezH959his birthrightהַבְּכֹרָֽה׃ סha.be.kho.RahH1062.
