2The LORDיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068appearedוַיֵּרָ֤אvai.ye.Ra'H7200toאֵלָיו֙'e.LavH413Isaacand saidוַיֹּ֖אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Do notאַל־'al-H408go downתֵּרֵ֣דte.RedH3381to Egyptמִצְרָ֑יְמָהmitz.Ra.ye.mahH4714.Settleשְׁכֹ֣ןshe.KhonH7931in the landבָּאָ֔רֶץba.'A.retzH776whereאֲשֶׁ֖ר'a.SherH834I tell youאֹמַ֥ר אֵלֶֽיךָ׃'o.Mar 'e.Lei.khaH559 H413.

4I will make your descendantsזַרְעֲךָ֙zar.'a.KhaH2233as numerousוְהִרְבֵּיתִ֤יve.hir.bei.TiH7235אֶֽת־'et-H853as the starsכְּכוֹכְבֵ֣יke.chokh.VeiH3556in the skyהַשָּׁמַ֔יִםha.sha.Ma.yimH8064,and I will giveוְנָתַתִּ֣יve.na.ta.TiH5414themלְזַרְעֲךָ֔le.zar.'a.KhaH2233אֵ֥ת'etH853allכָּל־kol-H3605theseהָאֵ֑לha.'ElH411landsהָאֲרָצֹ֖תha.'a.ra.TzotH776,and through your offspringבְזַרְעֲךָ֔ve.zar.'a.KhaH2233allכֹּ֖לkolH3605nationsגּוֹיֵ֥יgo.YeiH1471of the earthהָאָֽרֶץ׃ha.'A.retzH776will be blessedוְהִתְבָּרֲכ֣וּve.hit.ba.ra.KhuH1288,

5becauseעֵ֕קֶב'E.kevH6118אֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834Abrahamאַבְרָהָ֖ם'av.ra.HamH85listenedשָׁמַ֥עsha.Ma'H8085to My voiceבְּקֹלִ֑יbe.ko.LiH6963and keptוַיִּשְׁמֹר֙vai.yish.MorH8104My chargeמִשְׁמַרְתִּ֔יmish.mar.TiH4931,My commandmentsמִצְוֹתַ֖יmitz.vo.TaiH4687,My statutesחֻקּוֹתַ֥יchu.ko.TaiH2708,and My lawsוְתוֹרֹתָֽי׃ve.to.ro.TaiH8451.”

Isaac Deceives Abimelech

6So Isaacיִצְחָ֖קyitz.ChakH3327settledוַיֵּ֥שֶׁבvai.Ye.shevH3427in Gerarבִּגְרָֽר׃big.RarH1642.

7But when the menאַנְשֵׁ֤י'an.SheiH582of that placeהַמָּקוֹם֙ha.ma.kOmH4725askedוַֽיִּשְׁאֲל֞וּvai.yish.'a.LuH7592about his wifeלְאִשְׁתּ֔וֹle.'ish.ToH802,he saidוַיֹּ֖אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Sheהִ֑ואhi'H1931is my sisterאֲחֹ֣תִי'a.Cho.tiH269.”Forכִּ֤יkiH3588he was afraidיָרֵא֙ya.Re'H3372to sayלֵאמֹ֣רle.MorH559, “She ismy wifeאִשְׁתִּ֔י'ish.TiH802,”since he thought to himselfפֶּן־pen-H6435, “The menאַנְשֵׁ֤י'an.SheiH582of this placeהַמָּקוֹם֙ha.ma.kOmH4725will kill meיַֽהַרְגֻ֜נִיya.har.Gu.niH2026on account ofעַל־'al-H5921Rebekahרִבְקָ֔הriv.KahH7259,becauseכִּֽי־ki-H3588sheהִֽיא׃Hi'H1931is so beautifulטוֹבַ֥ת מַרְאֶ֖הto.Vat mar.'EhH2896 H4758.”

8וַיְהִ֗יvay.HiH1961Whenכִּ֣י אָֽרְכוּ־ki 'a.re.khu-H3588 H748Isaachad been thereשָׁם֙shamH8033a long timeהַיָּמִ֔יםhai.ya.MimH3117,Abimelechאֲבִימֶ֙לֶךְ֙'a.vi.Me.lekhH40kingמֶ֣לֶךְMe.lekhH4428of the Philistinesפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔יםpe.lish.TimH6430looked downוַיַּשְׁקֵ֗ףvai.yash.KefH8259fromבְּעַ֖דbe.'AdH1157the windowהַֽחַלּ֑וֹןha.cha.LonH2474and was surprised to seeוַיַּ֗רְא וְהִנֵּ֤הvai.Yar' ve.hi.NehH7200 H2009Isaacיִצְחָק֙yitz.ChakH3327caressingמְצַחֵ֔ק אֵ֖תme.tza.Chek 'etH6711 H854his wifeאִשְׁתּֽוֹ׃'ish.ToH802Rebekahרִבְקָ֥הriv.KahH7259.

9Abimelechאֲבִימֶ֜לֶךְ'a.vi.Me.lekhH40sent forוַיִּקְרָ֨אvai.yik.Ra'H7121Isaacלְיִצְחָ֗קle.yitz.ChakH3327and saidוַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙vai.Yo.merH559, “So sheהִ֔ואhi'H1931is reallyאַ֣ךְ הִנֵּ֤ה'akh hi.NehH389 H2009your wifeאִשְׁתְּךָ֙'ish.te.KhaH802!Howוְאֵ֥יךְve.'EikhH349could you sayאָמַ֖רְתָּ'a.Mar.taH559, ‘Sheהִ֑ואhi'H1931is my sisterאֲחֹ֣תִי'a.Cho.tiH269’?”Isaacיִצְחָ֔קyitz.ChakH3327repliedוַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלָיו֙vai.Yo.mer 'e.LavH559 H413, “Becauseכִּ֣יkiH3588I thoughtאָמַ֔רְתִּי'a.Mar.tiH559I mightפֶּן־pen-H6435dieאָמ֖וּת'a.MutH4191on account of herעָלֶֽיהָ׃'a.Lei.haH5921.”

10“Whatמַה־mah-H4100is thisזֹּ֖אתzotH2063you have doneעָשִׂ֣יתָ'a.Si.taH6213to us?”askedוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559Abimelechאֲבִימֶ֔לֶךְ'a.vi.Me.lekhH40. “Oneאַחַ֤ד'a.ChadH259of the peopleהָעָם֙ha.'AmH5971אֶת־'et-H853could easilyכִּ֠מְעַטKim.'atH4592have slept withשָׁכַ֞בsha.KhavH7901your wifeאִשְׁתֶּ֔ךָ'ish.Te.khaH802,and you would have broughtוְהֵבֵאתָ֥ve.he.ve.TaH935guiltאָשָֽׁם׃'a.ShamH817upon usעָלֵ֖ינוּ'a.Lei.nuH5921.”

11So Abimelechאֲבִימֶ֔לֶךְ'a.vi.Me.lekhH40אֶת־'et-H853warnedוַיְצַ֣וvay.TzavH6680allכָּל־kol-H3605the peopleהָעָ֖םha.'AmH5971,sayingלֵאמֹ֑רle.MorH559, “Whoever harmsהַנֹּגֵ֜עַha.no.Ge.a'H5060thisהַזֶּ֛הha.ZehH2088manבָּאִ֥ישׁba.'IshH376or his wifeוּבְאִשְׁתּ֖וֹu.ve.'ish.ToH802will surely be put to deathH4191.”

Isaac’s Prosperity

12Now Isaacיִצְחָק֙yitz.ChakH3327sowed seedוַיִּזְרַ֤עvai.yiz.Ra'H2232in theהַהִ֔ואha.Hiv'H1931landבָּאָ֣רֶץba.'A.retzH776,and that veryהַהִ֖ואha.Hiv'H1931yearבַּשָּׁנָ֥הba.sha.NahH8141he reapedוַיִּמְצָ֛אvai.yim.Tza'H4672a hundredfoldמֵאָ֣ה שְׁעָרִ֑יםme.'Ah she.'a.RimH3967 H8180.And the LORDיְהוָֽה׃Yah.wehH3068blessed himוַֽיְבָרֲכֵ֖הוּvay.va.ra.Khe.huH1288,

13andהָאִ֑ישׁha.'IshH376hebecame richer and richerוַיִּגְדַּ֖לvai.yig.DalH1431וַיֵּ֤לֶךְvai.Ye.lekhH1980הָלוֹךְ֙ha.loKhH1980,untilעַ֥ד כִּֽי־ גָדַ֖ל'ad ki- ga.DalH5704 H3588 H1431he was exceedinglyמְאֹֽד׃me.'OdH3966wealthyוְגָדֵ֔לve.ga.DelH1432.

14He owned so manyוַֽיְהִי־vay.hi-H1961flocksמִקְנֵה־ צֹאן֙mik.neh- tzoNH4735 H6629and herdsוּמִקְנֵ֣ה בָקָ֔רu.mik.Neh va.KarH4735 H1241andרַבָּ֑הra.BahH7227servantsוַעֲבֻדָּ֖הva.'a.vu.DahH5657that the Philistinesפְּלִשְׁתִּֽים׃pe.lish.TimH6430envied himוַיְקַנְא֥וּvay.kan.'UH7065אֹת֖וֹ'o.ToH853.

15So the Philistinesפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔יםpe.lish.TimH6430tookוַיְמַלְא֖וּםvay.mal.'UmH4390dirtעָפָֽר׃'a.FarH6083and stopped upסִתְּמ֣וּםsi.te.MumH5640allוְכָל־ve.kholH3605the wellsהַבְּאֵרֹ֗תha.be.'e.RotH875thatאֲשֶׁ֤ר'a.SherH834his father’sאָבִ֔יו'a.VivH1servantsעַבְדֵ֣י'av.DeiH5650had dugחָֽפְרוּ֙cha.fe.RuH2658in the daysבִּימֵ֖יbi.MeiH3117of his fatherאָבִ֑יו'a.VivH1Abrahamאַבְרָהָ֣ם'av.ra.HamH85.

16Then Abimelechאֲבִימֶ֖לֶךְ'a.vi.Me.lekhH40saidוַיֹּ֥אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559toאֶל־'el-H413Isaacיִצְחָ֑קyitz.ChakH3327, “Depart fromלֵ֚ךְlekhH1980usמֵֽעִמָּ֔נוּme.'i.Ma.nuH5973,forכִּֽי־ki-H3588you are muchמְאֹֽד׃me.'OdH3966too powerfulעָצַֽמְתָּ־'a.tzam.ta-H6105for usמִמֶּ֖נּוּmi.Me.nuH4480.”

17So Isaacיִצְחָ֑קyitz.ChakH3327leftוַיֵּ֥לֶךְvai.Ye.lekhH1980that placeמִשָּׁ֖םmi.ShamH8033and encampedוַיִּ֥חַןvai.Yi.chanH2583in the Valleyבְּנַֽחַל־be.na.chal-H5158of Gerarגְּרָ֖רge.RarH1642and settledוַיֵּ֥שֶׁבvai.Ye.shevH3427thereשָֽׁם׃ShamH8033.

18Isaacיִצְחָ֜קyitz.ChakH3327reopenedוַיָּ֨שָׁב וַיַּחְפֹּ֣ר׀vai.Ya.shov vai.yach.PorH7725 H2658אֶת־'et-H853the wellsבְּאֵרֹ֣ת הַמַּ֗יִםbe.'e.Rot ha.Ma.yimH875 H4325thatאֲשֶׁ֤ר'a.SherH834had been dugחָֽפְרוּ֙cha.fe.RuH2658in the daysבִּימֵי֙bi.MeiH3117of his fatherאָבִ֔יו'a.VivH1Abrahamאַבְרָהָ֣ם'av.ra.HamH85,which the Philistinesפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔יםpe.lish.TimH6430had stopped upוַיְסַתְּמ֣וּםvay.sa.te.MumH5640afterאַחֲרֵ֖י'a.cha.ReiH310Abrahamאַבְרָהָ֑ם'av.ra.HamH85diedמ֣וֹתMotH4194.And he gaveוַיִּקְרָ֤אvai.yik.Ra'H7121these wellsthe same namesH8034אֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834his fatherאָבִֽיו׃'a.VivH1had givenקָרָ֥אka.Ra'H7121them.

19Then Isaac’sיִצְחָ֖קyitz.ChakH3327servantsעַבְדֵֽי־'av.dei-H5650dugוַיַּחְפְּר֥וּvai.yach.pe.RuH2658in the valleyבַּנָּ֑חַלba.Na.chalH5158and foundוַיִּ֨מְצְאוּ־vai.Yim.tze.'u-H4672a wellבְּאֵ֖רbe.'ErH875of freshחַיִּֽים׃chai.YimH2416waterמַ֥יִםMa.yimH4325thereשָׁ֔םShamH8033.

20But the herdsmenרֹעֵ֣יro.'EiH7462of Gerarגְרָ֗רge.RarH1642quarreledוַיָּרִ֜יבוּvai.ya.Ri.vuH7378withעִם־'im-H5973Isaac’sיִצְחָ֛קyitz.ChakH3327herdsmenרֹעֵ֥יro.'EiH7462and saidלֵאמֹ֖רle.MorH559, “The water is oursהַמָּ֑יִםha.Ma.yimH4325!”So he namedוַיִּקְרָ֤א שֵֽׁם־vai.yik.Ra' shem-H7121 H8034the wellהַבְּאֵר֙ha.be.'ErH875Esekעֵ֔שֶׂק'E.sekH6230,becauseכִּ֥יkiH3588they contendedהִֽתְעַשְּׂק֖וּhit.'a.se.KuH6229with himעִמּֽוֹ׃i.MoH5973.

21Then they dugוַֽיַּחְפְּרוּ֙vai.yach.pe.RuH2658anotherאַחֶ֔רֶת'a.Che.retH312wellבְּאֵ֣רbe.'ErH875and quarreledוַיָּרִ֖יבוּvai.ya.Ri.vuH7378overעָלֶ֑יהָ'a.Lei.haH5921that one alsoגַּם־gam-H1571;so he namedוַיִּקְרָ֥אvai.yik.Ra'H7121itשְׁמָ֖הּshe.MahH8034Sitnahשִׂטְנָֽה׃sit.NahH7856.

22He moved onוַיַּעְתֵּ֣קvai.ya'.TekH6275from thereמִשָּׁ֗םmi.ShamH8033and dugוַיַּחְפֹּר֙ בְּאֵ֣רvai.yach.Por be.'ErH2658 H875anotherאַחֶ֔רֶת'a.Che.retH312well,and they did notוְלֹ֥אve.Lo'H3808quarrelרָב֖וּra.VuH7378over itעָלֶ֑יהָ'a.Lei.haH5921.He namedוַיִּקְרָ֤אvai.yik.Ra'H7121itשְׁמָהּ֙she.MahH8034Rehobothרְחֹב֔וֹתre.cho.VotH7344and saidוַיֹּ֗אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “At lastכִּֽי־ עַתָּ֞הki- 'a.TahH3588 H6258the LORDיְהוָ֛הYah.wehH3068has made roomהִרְחִ֧יבhir.ChivH7337for us,and we will be fruitfulוּפָרִ֥ינוּu.fa.Ri.nuH6509in the landבָאָֽרֶץ׃va.'A.retzH776.”

23From thereמִשָּׁ֖םmi.ShamH8033בְּאֵ֥רbe.'ErH884Isaacwent upוַיַּ֥עַלvai.Ya.'alH5927to Beershebaשָֽׁבַע׃Sha.va'H884,

24and thatהַה֔וּאha.Hu'H1931nightבַּלַּ֣יְלָהba.Lay.lahH3915the LORDיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068appearedוַיֵּרָ֨אvai.ye.Ra'H7200to himאֵלָ֤יו'e.LavH413and saidוַיֹּ֕אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Iאָנֹכִ֕י'a.no.KhiH595am the Godאֱלֹהֵ֖י'e.lo.HeiH430of your fatherאָבִ֑יךָ'a.Vi.khaH1Abrahamאַבְרָהָ֣ם'av.ra.HamH85.Do notאַל־'al-H408be afraidתִּירָא֙ti.Ra'H3372,forכִּֽי־ki-H3588Iאָנֹ֔כִי'a.No.khiH595am with youאִתְּךָ֣'i.te.KhaH854.I will blessוּבֵֽרַכְתִּ֙יךָ֙u.ve.rakh.Ti.khaH1288you and multiplyוְהִרְבֵּיתִ֣יve.hir.bei.TiH7235אֶֽת־'et-H853your descendantsזַרְעֲךָ֔zar.'a.KhaH2233for the sakeבַּעֲב֖וּרba.'a.VurH5668of My servantעַבְדִּֽי׃'av.DiH5650Abrahamאַבְרָהָ֥ם'av.ra.HamH85.”

25So Isaac builtוַיִּ֧בֶןvai.Yi.venH1129an altarמִזְבֵּ֗חַmiz.Be.achH4196thereשָׁ֣םshamH8033and calledוַיִּקְרָא֙vai.yik.Ra'H7121on the nameבְּשֵׁ֣םbe.ShemH8034of the LORDיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068,and he pitchedוַיֶּט־vai.yet-H5186his tentאָהֳל֑וֹ'o.ho.LoH168thereשָׁ֖םshamH8033. Hisיִצְחָ֖קyitz.ChakH3327servantsעַבְדֵי־'av.dei-H5650also dugוַיִּכְרוּ־vai.yikh.ru-H3738a wellבְּאֵֽר׃be.'ErH875thereשָׁ֥םshamH8033.

Isaac’s Covenant with Abimelech

26Later, Abimelechוַאֲבִימֶ֕לֶךְva.'a.vi.Me.lekhH40cameהָלַ֥ךְha.LakhH1980toאֵלָ֖יו'e.LavH413Isaacfrom Gerarמִגְּרָ֑רmi.ge.RarH1642,with Ahuzzathוַאֲחֻזַּת֙va.'a.chu.ZatH276his adviserמֵֽרֵעֵ֔הוּme.re.'E.huH4828and Phicolוּפִיכֹ֖לu.fi.KholH6369the commanderשַׂר־sar-H8269of his armyצְבָאֽוֹ׃tze.va.'OH6635.

27“Whyמַדּ֖וּעַma.Du.a'H4069have you comeבָּאתֶ֣םba.TemH935to meאֲלֵהֶם֙'a.le.HemH413?”Isaacיִצְחָ֔קyitz.ChakH3327askedוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559themאֵלָ֑י'e.LaiH413. “Youוְאַתֶּם֙ve.'a.TemH859hatedשְׂנֵאתֶ֣םse.ne.TemH8130meאֹתִ֔י'o.TiH853and sent me awayוַתְּשַׁלְּח֖וּנִי מֵאִתְּכֶֽם׃va.te.sha.le.Chu.ni me.'i.te.KhemH7971 H854.”

28“We can plainly seeH7200thatכִּֽי־ki-H3588the LORDיְהוָ֣ה׀Yah.wehH3068has beenהָיָ֣הha.YahH1961with youעִמָּךְ֒'i.moKhH5973,”they repliedוַיֹּאמְר֗וּvai.yo.me.RuH559. “We recommend thatוַנֹּ֗אמֶרva.No.merH559there should now beתְּהִ֨י נָ֥אte.Hi na'H1961 H4994an oathאָלָ֛ה'a.LahH423betweenבֵּינוֹתֵ֖ינוּbei.no.Tei.nuH996usבֵּינֵ֣ינוּbei.Nei.nuH996and youוּבֵינֶ֑ךָu.vei.Ne.khaH996.Let us makeוְנִכְרְתָ֥הve.nikh.re.TahH3772a covenantבְרִ֖יתve.RitH1285with youעִמָּֽךְ׃'i.MakhH5973

29that you will notאִם־'im-H518תַּעֲשֵׂ֨הta.'a.SehH6213harmרָעָ֗הra.'AhH7451usעִמָּ֜נוּ'i.Ma.nuH5973,just asכַּאֲשֶׁר֙ka.'a.SherH834we have notלֹ֣אlo'H3808harmed youנְגַֽעֲנ֔וּךָne.ga.'a.Nu.khaH5060butוְכַאֲשֶׁ֨רve.kha.'a.SherH834have doneעָשִׂ֤ינוּ'a.Si.nuH6213onlyרַק־rak-H7535goodט֔וֹבTovH2896to youעִמְּךָ֙'i.me.KhaH5973,sending you on your wayוַנְּשַׁלֵּֽחֲךָ֖va.ne.sha.le.cha.KhaH7971in peaceבְּשָׁל֑וֹםbe.sha.LomH7965.And nowעַתָּ֖ה'a.TahH6258youאַתָּ֥ה'a.TahH859are blessedבְּר֥וּךְbe.RukhH1288by the LORDיְהוָֽה׃Yah.wehH3068.”

30So Isaac preparedוַיַּ֤עַשׂvai.Ya.'asH6213a feastמִשְׁתֶּ֔הmish.TehH4960for them,and they ateוַיֹּאכְל֖וּvai.yo.khe.LuH398and drankוַיִּשְׁתּֽוּ׃vai.yish.TuH8354.

31And they got up earlyוַיַּשְׁכִּ֣ימוּvai.yash.Ki.muH7925the next morningבַבֹּ֔קֶרva.Bo.kerH1242and swore an oathוַיִּשָּׁבְע֖וּvai.yi.sha.ve.'UH7650to eachאִ֣ישׁ'ishH376otherלְאָחִ֑יוle.'a.ChivH251.Then Isaacיִצְחָ֔קyitz.ChakH3327sent them on their wayוַיְשַׁלְּחֵ֣םvay.sha.le.ChemH7971,and they left himוַיֵּלְכ֥וּ מֵאִתּ֖וֹvai.ye.le.Khu me.'i.ToH1980 H854in peaceבְּשָׁלֽוֹם׃be.sha.LomH7965.
