1Shortly beforeוַיְהִ֗יvay.HiH1961the LORDיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068אֶת־'et-H853tookבְּהַעֲל֤וֹתbe.ha.'a.LotH5927Elijahאֵ֣לִיָּ֔הוּ'e.li.Ya.huH452up to heavenהַשָּׁמָ֑יִםha.sha.Ma.yimH8064in a whirlwindבַּֽסְעָרָ֖הbas.'a.RahH5591,Elijahאֵלִיָּ֛הוּ'e.li.Ya.huH452and Elishaוֶאֱלִישָׁ֖עve.'e.li.Sha'H477were on their wayוַיֵּ֧לֶךְvai.Ye.lekhH1980fromמִן־min-H4480Gilgalהַגִּלְגָּֽל׃ha.gil.GalH1537,

2and Elijahאֵלִיָּ֨הוּ'e.li.Ya.huH452saidוַיֹּאמֶר֩vai.yo.MerH559toאֶל־'el-H413Elishaאֱלִישָׁ֜ע'e.li.Sha'H477, “Pleaseנָ֣אna'H4994stayשֵֽׁב־shev-H3427hereפֹ֗הFohH6311,forכִּ֤יkiH3588the LORDיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068has sent meשְׁלָחַ֣נִיshe.la.Cha.niH7971on toעַד־'ad-H5704BethelH1008.”But Elishaאֱלִישָׁ֔ע'e.li.Sha'H477repliedוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “As surely as the LORDיְהוָ֥הYah.wehH3068livesחַי־chai-H2416and as you yourselfנַפְשְׁךָ֖naf.she.KhaH5315liveוְחֵֽי־ve.chei-H2416,I will notאִם־'im-H518leave youאֶעֶזְבֶ֑ךָּ'e.'ez.Ve.kaH5800.”So they went downוַיֵּרְד֖וּvai.ye.re.DuH3381toH1008BethelH1008.

3Then the sonsבְנֵֽי־ve.nei-H1121of the prophetsהַנְּבִיאִ֥יםha.ne.vi.'ImH5030אֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834atבֵּֽית־beit-H1008Bethelאֵל֮'elH1008came outוַיֵּצְא֨וּvai.ye.tze.'UH3318toאֶל־'el-H413Elishaאֱלִישָׁע֒'e.li.Sha'H477and saidוַיֹּאמְר֣וּ אֵלָ֔יוvai.yo.me.Ru 'e.LavH559 H413, “Do you knowהֲיָדַ֕עְתָּha.ya.Da'.taH3045thatכִּ֣יkiH3588the LORDיְהוָ֛הYah.wehH3068will takeלֹקֵ֥חַlo.Ke.achH3947אֶת־'et-H853your masterאֲדֹנֶ֖יךָ'a.do.Nei.khaH113away fromמֵעַ֣לme.'AlH5921youרֹאשֶׁ֑ךָro.She.khaH7218todayהַיּ֗וֹםhai.YomH3117?” “Yesגַּם־gam-H1571,Iאֲנִ֥י'a.NiH589knowיָדַ֖עְתִּיya.Da'.tiH3045,”he repliedוַיֹּ֛אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559. “Do not speakהֶחֱשֽׁוּ׃he.che.ShuH2814of it.”

4And Elijahאֵלִיָּ֜הוּ'e.li.Ya.huH452said toוַיֹּאמֶר֩vai.yo.MerH559Elishaאֱלִישָׁ֣ע׀'e.li.Sha'H477, “Pleaseנָ֣אna'H4994stayשֵֽׁב־shev-H3427hereפֹ֗הFohH6311,forכִּ֤יkiH3588the LORDיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068has sent meשְׁלָחַ֣נִיshe.la.Cha.niH7971on to Jerichoיְרִיח֔וֹye.ri.ChoH3405.”But Elisha repliedוַיֹּ֕אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “As surely as the LORDיְהוָ֥הYah.wehH3068livesחַי־chai-H2416and as you yourselfנַפְשְׁךָ֖naf.she.KhaH5315liveוְחֵֽי־ve.chei-H2416,I will notאִם־'im-H518leave youאֶעֶזְבֶ֑ךָּ'e.'ez.Ve.kaH5800.”So they wentוַיָּבֹ֖אוּvai.ya.Vo.'uH935to Jerichoיְרִיחֽוֹ׃ye.ri.ChoH3405.

6And Elijahאֵלִיָּ֜הוּ'e.li.Ya.huH452saidוַיֹּאמֶר֩vai.yo.MerH559to Elisha, “Pleaseנָ֣אna'H4994stayשֵֽׁב־shev-H3427hereפֹ֗הFohH6311,forכִּ֤יkiH3588the LORDיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068has sent meשְׁלָחַ֣נִיshe.la.Cha.niH7971on to the Jordanהַיַּרְדֵּ֔נָהhai.yar.De.nahH3383.”But Elisha repliedוַיֹּ֕אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “As surely as the LORDיְהוָ֥הYah.wehH3068livesחַי־chai-H2416and as youנַפְשְׁךָ֖naf.she.KhaH5315yourself liveוְחֵֽי־ve.chei-H2416,I will notאִם־'im-H518leave youאֶעֶזְבֶ֑ךָּ'e.'ez.Ve.kaH5800.”So the two of themשְׁנֵיהֶֽם׃she.nei.HemH8147went onוַיֵּלְכ֖וּvai.ye.le.KhuH1980.

7Then a companyאִ֜ישׁ'ishH376of fiftyוַחֲמִשִּׁ֨יםva.cha.mi.ShimH2572of the sonsמִבְּנֵ֤יmi.be.NeiH1121of the prophetsהַנְּבִיאִים֙ha.ne.vi.'ImH5030wentהָֽלְכ֔וּha.le.KhuH1980and stoodוַיַּעַמְד֥וּvai.ya.'am.DuH5975at a distanceמֵרָח֑וֹקme.ra.ChokH7350,facingמִנֶּ֖גֶדmi.Ne.gedH5048Elijah and Elishaas the twoוּשְׁנֵיהֶ֖םu.she.nei.HemH8147of them stoodעָמְד֥וּ'a.me.DuH5975byעַל־'al-H5921the Jordanהַיַּרְדֵּֽן׃hai.yar.DenH3383.

10“You have requestedלִשְׁא֑וֹלlish.'olH7592a difficult thingהִקְשִׁ֣יתָhik.Shi.taH7185,”said Elijahוַיֹּ֖אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559. “Nevertheless,ifאִם־'im-H518you seeתִּרְאֶ֨הtir.'EhH7200meאֹתִ֜י'o.TiH853as I am takenלֻקָּ֤חlu.KachH3947from youמֵֽאִתָּךְ֙me.'i.toKhH854,it will beיְהִֽי־ye.hi-H1961yoursכֵ֔ןKhenH3651.But ifוְאִם־ve.'im-H518notאַ֖יִן'A.yinH369,then it will notלֹ֥אlo'H3808beיִהְיֶֽה׃yih.YehH1961so.”

11וַיְהִ֗יvay.HiH1961As theyהֵ֣מָּהHe.mahH1992were walking alongH1980and talking togetherוְדַבֵּ֔רve.da.BerH1696,suddenlyוְהִנֵּ֤הve.hi.NehH2009a chariotרֶֽכֶב־re.khev-H7393of fireאֵשׁ֙'eshH784with horsesוְס֣וּסֵיve.Su.seiH5483of fireאֵ֔שׁ'EshH784appeared and separatedוַיַּפְרִ֖דוּ בֵּ֣יןvai.yaf.Ri.du beinH6504 H996the two of themשְׁנֵיהֶ֑םshe.nei.HemH8147,and Elijahאֵ֣לִיָּ֔הוּ'e.li.Ya.huH452went upוַיַּ֙עַל֙vai.Ya.'alH5927into heavenהַשָּׁמָֽיִם׃ha.sha.Ma.yimH8064in a whirlwindבַּֽסְעָרָ֖הba.se.'a.RahH5591.

12As Elishaוֶאֱלִישָׁ֣עve.'e.li.Sha'H477watchedרֹאֶ֗הro.'EhH7200,heוְה֤וּאve.Hu'H1931cried outמְצַעֵק֙me.tza.'EkH6817, “My fatherאָבִ֣י׀'a.ViH1,my fatherאָבִ֗י'a.ViH1,the chariotsרֶ֤כֶבRe.khevH7393and horsemenוּפָ֣רָשָׁ֔יוu.Fa.ra.ShavH6571of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵל֙Yis.ra.'ElH3478!”And he sawרָאָ֖הוּra.'A.huH7200Elijahnoוְלֹ֥אve.Lo'H3808moreע֑וֹדodH5750.So taking holdוַֽיַּחֲזֵק֙vai.ya.cha.ZekH2388of his own clothesבִּבְגָדָ֔יוbiv.ga.DavH899,he tore themוַיִּקְרָעֵ֖םvai.yik.ra.'EmH7167in twoלִשְׁנַ֥יִם קְרָעִֽים׃lish.Na.yim ke.ra.'ImH8147 H7168.

13Elisha also picked upוַיָּ֙רֶם֙vai.Ya.remH7311אֶת־'et-H853the cloakאַדֶּ֣רֶת'a.De.retH155thatאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834had fallenנָפְלָ֖הna.fe.LahH5307fromמֵעָלָ֑יוme.'a.LavH5921Elijahאֵלִיָּ֔הוּ'e.li.Ya.huH452,and he went backוַיָּ֥שָׁבvai.Ya.shovH7725and stoodוַֽיַּעֲמֹ֖דvai.ya.'a.ModH5975onעַל־'al-H5921the bankשְׂפַ֥תse.FatH8193of the Jordanהַיַּרְדֵּֽן׃hai.yar.DenH3383.

Elisha Succeeds Elijah

15When the sonsבְנֵֽי־ve.nei-H1121of the prophetsהַנְּבִיאִ֤יםha.ne.vi.'ImH5030whoאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834werewatching himמִנֶּ֔גֶדmi.Ne.gedH5048from Jerichoבִּֽירִיחוֹ֙bi.ri.ChoH3405saw what had happenedוַיִּרְאֻ֨הוּvai.yir.'U.huH7200,they saidוַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּvai.Yo.me.RuH559, “The spiritר֥וּחַRu.achH7307of Elijahאֵלִיָּ֖הוּ'e.li.Ya.huH452restsנָ֛חָהNa.chahH5117onעַל־'al-H5921Elishaאֱלִישָׁ֑ע'e.li.Sha'H477.”And they wentוַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙vai.ya.Vo.'uH935to meet himלִקְרָאת֔וֹlik.ra.ToH7122and bowed downוַיִּשְׁתַּחֲווּ־vai.yish.ta.cha.vu-H7812to the groundאָֽרְצָה׃'A.re.tzahH776before him.

17But when they pressedוַיִּפְצְרוּ־vai.yif.tze.ru-H6484himto the point ofעַד־'ad-H5704embarrassmentבֹּ֖שׁboshH954,he saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Sendשְׁלָ֑חוּshe.La.chuH7971them.”And they sentוַֽיִּשְׁלְחוּ֙vai.yish.le.ChuH7971fiftyחֲמִשִּׁ֣יםcha.mi.ShimH2572menאִ֔ישׁ'IshH376,who searched forוַיְבַקְשׁ֥וּvay.vak.ShuH1245threeשְׁלֹשָֽׁה־she.lo.shah-H7969daysיָמִ֖יםya.MimH3117but did notוְלֹ֥אve.Lo'H3808findמְצָאֻֽהוּ׃me.tza.'U.huH4672Elijah.

18When they returnedוַיָּשֻׁ֣בוּvai.ya.Shu.vuH7725toאֵלָ֔יו'e.LavH413Elisha,whoוְה֖וּאve.Hu'H1931was stayingיֹשֵׁ֣בyo.ShevH3427in Jerichoבִּירִיח֑וֹbi.ri.ChoH3405,he saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to themאֲלֵהֶ֔ם'a.le.HemH413, “Didn’tהֲלֽוֹא־ha.lo'-H3808I tellאָמַ֥רְתִּי'a.Mar.tiH559youאֲלֵיכֶ֖ם'a.lei.KhemH413notאַל־'al-H408to goתֵּלֵֽכוּ׃te.Le.khuH1980?”

Elisha Heals the Waters of Jericho

19Then the menאַנְשֵׁ֤י'an.SheiH582of the cityהָעִיר֙ha.'IrH5892saidוַיֹּ֨אמְר֜וּvai.Yo.me.RuH559toאֶל־'el-H413Elishaאֱלִישָׁ֔ע'e.li.Sha'H477, “Pleaseנָ֞אna'H4994noteהִנֵּה־hi.neh-H2009,our lordאֲדֹנִ֖י'a.do.NiH113,that the city’sהָעִיר֙ha.'IrH5892locationמוֹשַׁ֤בmo.ShavH4186is goodט֔וֹבTovH2896,asכַּאֲשֶׁ֥רka.'a.SherH834youcan seeרֹאֶ֑הro.'EhH7200.But the waterוְהַמַּ֥יִםve.ha.Ma.yimH4325isbadרָעִ֖יםra.'ImH7451and the landוְהָאָ֥רֶץve.ha.'A.retzH776is unfruitfulמְשַׁכָּֽלֶת׃me.sha.Ka.letH7921.”

20“Bringקְחוּ־ke.chu-H3947mea newחֲדָשָׁ֔הcha.da.ShahH2319bowlצְלֹחִ֣יתtze.lo.ChitH6746,”he repliedוַיֹּ֗אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “and putוְשִׂ֥ימוּve.Si.muH7760some saltמֶ֑לַחMe.lachH4417in itשָׁ֖םshamH8033.”So they broughtוַיִּקְח֖וּvai.yik.ChuH3947itto himאֵלָֽיו׃'e.LavH413,

21and Elisha went outוַיֵּצֵא֙vai.ye.Tze'H3318toאֶל־'el-H413the springמוֹצָ֣א הַמַּ֔יִםmo.Tza' ha.Ma.yimH4161 H4325,castוַיַּשְׁלֶךְ־vai.yash.lekh-H7993the saltמֶ֑לַחMe.lachH4417into itשָׁ֖םshamH8033,and saidוַיֹּ֜אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “This is whatכֹּֽה־koh-H3541the LORDיְהוָ֗הYah.wehH3068saysאָמַ֣ר'a.MarH559: ‘I have healedרִפִּ֙אתִי֙ri.Pi.tiH7495thisהָאֵ֔לֶּהha.'E.lehH428waterלַמַּ֣יִםla.Ma.yimH4325.Noלֹֽא־lo'-H3808longerע֖וֹדodH5750will it causeיִהְיֶ֥ה מִשָּׁ֛םyih.Yeh mi.ShamH1961 H8033deathמָ֥וֶתMa.vetH4194or unfruitfulnessוּמְשַׁכָּֽלֶת׃u.me.sha.Ka.letH7921.’”

23From thereמִשָּׁ֖םmi.ShamH8033,Elisha went upוַיַּ֥עַלvai.Ya.'alH5927toבֵּֽית־beit-H1008Bethelאֵ֑ל'ElH1008,and as heוְה֣וּא׀ve.Hu'H1931was walking upעֹלֶ֣ה'o.LehH5927the roadבַדֶּ֗רֶךְva.De.rekhH1870,a group of boysוּנְעָרִ֤ים קְטַנִּים֙u.ne.'a.Rim ke.ta.NimH5288 H6996came outיָצְא֣וּya.tze.'UH3318ofמִן־min-H4480the cityהָעִ֔ירha.'IrH5892and jeered atוַיִּתְקַלְּסוּ־vai.yit.ka.le.su-H7046him,chantingוַיֹּ֣אמְרוּvai.Yo.me.ruH559, “Go upעֲלֵ֥ה'a.LehH5927,you baldheadקֵרֵ֖חַke.Re.achH7142!Go upעֲלֵ֥ה'a.LehH5927,you baldheadקֵרֵֽחַ׃ke.Re.achH7142!”

24Then he turnedוַיִּ֤פֶןvai.Yi.fenH6437aroundאַֽחֲרָיו֙'a.cha.RavH310,looked at themוַיִּרְאֵ֔םvai.yir.'EmH7200,and called down a curse on themוַֽיְקַלְלֵ֖םvay.ka.LemH7043in the nameבְּשֵׁ֣םbe.ShemH8034of the LORDיְהוָ֑הYah.wehH3068.Suddenly twoשְׁתַּ֤יִםshe.Ta.yimH8147female bearsדֻּבִּים֙du.BimH1677came outוַתֵּצֶ֨אנָהva.te.Tze.nahH3318ofמִן־min-H4480the woodsהַיַּ֔עַרhai.Ya.'arH3293and mauledוַתְּבַקַּ֣עְנָהva.te.va.Ka'.nahH1234forty-twoאַרְבָּעִ֥ים וּשְׁנֵ֖י'ar.ba.'Im u.she.NeiH705 H8147of the boysיְלָדִֽים׃ye.la.DimH3206.
