12Now the sonsוּבְנֵ֥יu.ve.NeiH1121of Eliעֵלִ֖י'e.LiH5941were wickedבְלִיָּ֑עַלve.li.Ya.'alH1100menבְּנֵ֣יbe.NeiH1121;they had noלֹ֥אlo'H3808regardיָדְע֖וּya.de.'UH3045אֶת־'et-H853for the LORDיְהוָֽה׃Yah.wehH3068

13or for the customוּמִשְׁפַּ֥טu.mish.PatH4941of the priestsהַכֹּהֲנִ֖יםha.ko.ha.NimH3548withאֶת־'et-H854the peopleהָעָ֑םha.'AmH5971.When anyכָּל־kol-H3605manאִ֞ישׁ'ishH376offeredזֹבֵ֣חַzo.Ve.achH2076a sacrificeזֶ֗בַחZe.vachH2077,the servantנַ֤עַרNa.'arH5288of the priestהַכֹּהֵן֙ha.ko.HenH3548would comeוּבָ֨אu.Va'H935with a three-prongedשְׁלֹ֥שׁ־ הַשִּׁנַּ֖יִם בְּיָדֽוֹ׃she.Losh- ha.shi.Na.yim be.ya.DoH7969 H8127 H3027meat forkוְהַמַּזְלֵ֛גve.ha.maz.LegH4207while the meatהַבָּשָׂ֔רha.ba.SarH1320was boilingכְּבַשֵּׁ֣לke.va.ShelH1310

14and plungeוְהִכָּ֨הve.hi.KahH5221itinto the panבַכִּיּ֜וֹרva.ki.YorH3595orא֣וֹ'oH176kettleבַדּ֗וּדva.DudH1731orא֤וֹ'oH176cauldronבַקַּלַּ֙חַת֙va.ka.La.chatH7037orא֣וֹ'oH176cooking potבַפָּר֔וּרva.pa.RurH6517.And the priestהַכֹּהֵ֖ןha.ko.HenH3548would claimיִקַּ֥חyi.KachH3947for himselfwhateverכֹּ֚לkolH3605אֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834the meat forkהַמַּזְלֵ֔גha.maz.LegH4207brought upיַעֲלֶ֣הya.'a.LehH5927.This is howכָּ֚כָהKa.khahH3602they treatedיַעֲשׂ֣וּya.'a.SuH6213allלְכָל־le.kholH3605the Israelitesיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לYis.ra.'ElH3478who cameהַבָּאִ֥ים שָׁ֖םha.ba.'Im shamH935 H8033to Shilohבְּשִׁלֹֽה׃be.shi.LohH7887.

15Evenגַּם֮gamH1571beforeבְּטֶרֶם֮be.te.RemH2962the fatהַחֵלֶב֒ha.che.LevH2459was burnedיַקְטִר֣וּןyak.ti.RunH6999אֶת־'et-H853,the servantנַ֣עַרNa.'arH5288of the priestהַכֹּהֵ֗ןha.ko.HenH3548would comeוּבָ֣א׀u.Va'H935and sayוְאָמַר֙ve.'a.MarH559to the manלָאִ֣ישׁla.'IshH376who was sacrificingהַזֹּבֵ֔חַha.zo.Ve.achH2076, “Giveתְּנָ֣הte.NahH5414the priestלַכֹּהֵ֑ןla.ko.HenH3548some meatבָשָׂ֔רva.SarH1320to roastלִצְל֖וֹתlitz.LotH6740,because he will notוְלֹֽא־ve.lo'-H3808acceptיִקַּ֧חyi.KachH3947boiledמְבֻשָּׁ֖לme.vu.ShalH1310meatבָּשָׂ֥רba.SarH1320fromמִמְּךָ֛mi.me.KhaH4480youכִּ֥יkiH3588,but onlyאִם־'im-H518rawחָֽי׃ChaiH2416.”

16And if any manהָאִ֗ישׁha.'IshH376saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to himאֵלָ֜יו'e.LavH413, “The fatהַחֵ֔לֶבha.Che.levH2459must be burnedH6999firstכַּיּוֹם֙kai.yOmH3117;then you may takeוְקַ֨ח־ve.Kach-H3947whateverכַּאֲשֶׁ֥רka.'a.SherH834youנַפְשֶׁ֑ךָnaf.She.khaH5315wantתְּאַוֶּ֖הte.'a.VehH183,”the servant would replyוְאָמַ֥ר׀ve.'a.MarH559, “NoH3808כִּ֚יkiH3588,you must giveתִתֵּ֔ןti.TenH5414it to meright nowעַתָּ֣ה'a.TahH6258.If you refuseוְאִם־ve.'im-H518,I will takeלָקַ֥חְתִּיla.Kach.tiH3947itby forceבְחָזְקָֽה׃ve.cha.ze.KahH2394!”

17Thus the sinחַטַּ֧אתcha.TatH2403of these young menהַנְּעָרִ֛יםha.ne.'a.RimH5288wasוַתְּהִ֨יva.te.HiH1961severeגְּדוֹלָ֥ה מְאֹ֖דge.do.Lah me.'OdH1419 H3966אֶת־'et-H854in the sightפְּנֵ֣יpe.NeiH6440of the LORDיְהוָ֑הYah.wehH3068,forכִּ֤יkiH3588theyהָֽאֲנָשִׁ֔יםha.'a.na.ShimH582were treating the LORD’sיְהוָֽה׃Yah.wehH3068offeringמִנְחַ֥תmin.ChatH4503with contemptנִֽאֲצוּ֙ni.'a.TzuH5006אֵ֖ת'etH853.

18Now Samuelוּשְׁמוּאֵ֕לu.she.mu.'ElH8050was ministeringמְשָׁרֵ֖תme.sha.RetH8334אֶת־'et-H854beforeפְּנֵ֣יpe.NeiH6440the LORDיְהוָ֑הYah.wehH3068—a boyנַ֕עַרNa.'arH5288wearingחָג֖וּרcha.GurH2296a linenבָּֽד׃BadH906ephodאֵפ֥וֹד'e.FodH646.

19Each yearH3117his motherאִמּ֔וֹ'i.MoH517would makeתַּעֲשֶׂה־ta.'a.seh-H6213hima littleקָטֹן֙ka.TonH6996robeוּמְעִ֤ילu.me.'IlH4598and bringוְהַעַלְתָ֥הve.ha.'al.TahH5927it to himwhen she wentבַּֽעֲלוֹתָהּ֙ba.'a.lo.TahH5927withאֶת־'et-H854her husbandאִישָׁ֔הּ'i.ShahH376to offerלִזְבֹּ֖חַliz.Bo.achH2076אֶת־'et-H853the annualH3117sacrificeזֶ֥בַחZe.vachH2077.

20And Eliעֵלִ֜י'e.LiH5941אֶת־'et-H853would blessוּבֵרַ֨ךְu.ve.RakhH1288Elkanahאֶלְקָנָ֣ה'el.ka.NahH511וְאֶת־ve.'EtH853and his wifeאִשְׁתּ֗וֹ'ish.ToH802,sayingוְאָמַר֙ve.'a.MarH559, “May the LORDיְהוָ֨הYah.wehH3068giveיָשֵׂם֩ya.SemH7760youchildrenזֶ֙רַע֙ze.ra'H2233byמִן־min-H4480thisהַזֹּ֔אתha.ZotH2063womanהָאִשָּׁ֣הha.'i.ShahH802in place ofתַּ֚חַתTa.chatH8478the oneהַשְּׁאֵלָ֔הha.she.'e.LahH7596אֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834she dedicated toשָׁאַ֖לsha.'AlH7592the LORDלַֽיהוָ֑הla.Yah.wehH3068.”Then they would goוְהָלְכ֖וּve.ha.le.KhuH1980homeלִמְקֹמֽוֹ׃lim.ko.MoH4725.

21Soכִּֽי־ki-H3588the LORDיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068אֶת־'et-H853attended toפָקַ֤דfa.KadH6485Hannahחַנָּ֔הcha.NahH2584,and she conceivedוַתַּ֛הַרva.Ta.harH2029and gave birth toוַתֵּ֥לֶדva.Te.ledH3205threeשְׁלֹשָֽׁה־she.lo.shah-H7969sonsבָנִ֖יםva.NimH1121and twoוּשְׁתֵּ֣יu.she.TeiH8147daughtersבָנ֑וֹתva.NotH1323.Meanwhile, the boyהַנַּ֥עַרha.Na.'arH5288Samuelשְׁמוּאֵ֖לshe.mu.'ElH8050grew upוַיִּגְדַּ֛לvai.yig.DalH1431in the presence ofעִם־'im-H5973the LORDיְהוָֽה׃ סYah.wehH3068.

22Now Eliוְעֵלִ֖יve.'e.LiH5941was veryמְאֹ֑דme.'OdH3966oldזָקֵ֣ןza.KenH2204,and he heardוְשָׁמַ֗עve.sha.Ma'H8085אֵת֩'etH853about everythingכָּל־kol-H3605אֲשֶׁ֨ר'a.SherH834his sonsבָּנָיו֙ba.NavH1121were doingיַעֲשׂ֤וּןya.'a.SunH6213to allלְכָל־le.kholH3605Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לYis.ra.'ElH3478andוְאֵ֤תve.'EtH853howאֲשֶֽׁר־'a.Sher-H834they were sleepingיִשְׁכְּבוּן֙yish.ke.VunH7901withאֶת־'et-H853the womenהַנָּשִׁ֔יםha.na.ShimH802who servedהַצֹּ֣בְא֔וֹתha.Tzoe.'otH6633at the entranceפֶּ֖תַחPe.tachH6607to the Tentאֹ֥הֶל'O.helH168of Meetingמוֹעֵֽד׃mo.'EdH4150.

23“Whyלָ֥מָּהLa.mahH4100are you doingתַעֲשׂ֖וּןta.'a.SunH6213theseהָאֵ֑לֶּהha.'E.lehH428אֲשֶׁ֨ר'a.SherH834thingsכַּדְּבָרִ֣יםka.de.va.RimH1697?” Elisaidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to his sons. “Iאָנֹכִ֤י'a.no.KhiH595hearשֹׁמֵ֙עַ֙sho.Me.a'H8085aboutאֶת־'et-H853your wickedרָעִ֔יםra.'ImH7451deedsדִּבְרֵיכֶ֣םdiv.rei.KhemH1697fromמֵאֵ֖תme.'EtH854allכָּל־kol-H3605theseאֵֽלֶּה׃'E.lehH428peopleהָעָ֥םha.'AmH5971.

24Noאַ֖ל'alH408,my sonsבָּנָ֑י כִּ֠יba.Nai kiH1121 H3588; it isnotלֽוֹא־lo'-H3808a goodטוֹבָ֤הto.VahH2896reportהַשְּׁמֻעָה֙ha.she.mu.'AhH8052אֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834Iאָנֹכִ֣י'a.no.KhiH595hearשֹׁמֵ֔עַsho.Me.a'H8085circulating amongמַעֲבִרִ֖יםma.'a.vi.RimH5674the LORD’sיְהוָֽה׃Yah.wehH3068peopleעַם־'am-H5971.

25Ifאִם־'im-H518a manאִ֤ישׁ'ishH376sinsיֶחֱטָ֨אye.che.Ta'H2398against another manלְאִישׁ֙le.'IshH376,Godאֱלֹהִ֔ים'E.lo.HimH430can intercede for himוּפִֽלְל֣וֹu.fi.LoH6419;but ifוְאִ֤םve.'ImH518a manאִ֔ישׁ'IshH376sinsיֶֽחֱטָא־ye.che.ta'-H2398against the LORDלַֽיהוָה֙la.Yah.wehH3068,whoמִ֖יmiH4310can intercedeיִתְפַּלֶּל־yit.pa.lel-H6419for him?”But they would notוְלֹ֤אve.Lo'H3808listenיִשְׁמְעוּ֙ לְק֣וֹלyish.me.'U le.KolH8085 H6963to their fatherאֲבִיהֶ֔ם'a.vi.HemH1,sinceכִּֽי־ki-H3588the LORDיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068intendedחָפֵ֥ץcha.FetzH2654to put them to deathלַהֲמִיתָֽם׃la.ha.mi.TamH4191.
