Judges 16

American Standard Version

1And SamsonH8123 wentH935 to GazaH5804, and sawH7200 there a harlot, and wentH935 in unto her. 2And it was told the Gazites, sayingH559, SamsonH8123 is comeH935 hither. And they compassed him in, and laid waitH693 for him all nightH3915 in the gateH8179 of the cityH5892, and were quiet all the nightH3915, sayingH559, Let be till morningH1242 lightH216, then we will killH2026 him. 3And SamsonH8123 layH7901 till midnight, and aroseH6965 at midnight, and laid holdH270 of the doorsH1817 of the gateH8179 of the cityH5892, and the twoH8147 posts, and plucked them up, barH1280 and all, and putH7760 them upon his shouldersH3802, and carried them up to the topH7218 of the mountainH2022 that is before HebronH2275.

4And it came to pass afterward, that he lovedH157 a womanH802 in the valley of Sorek, whose nameH8034 was DelilahH1807. 5And the lords of the PhilistinesH6430 cameH5927 up unto her, and saidH559 unto her, Entice him, and seeH7200 wherein his greatH1419 strengthH3581 lieth, and by what means we may prevailH3201 against him, that we may bindH631 him to afflictH6031 him: and we will giveH5414 thee every oneH376 of us eleven hundredH3967 pieces of silverH3701. 6And DelilahH1807 saidH559 to SamsonH8123, TellH5046 me, I pray thee, wherein thy greatH1419 strengthH3581 lieth, and wherewith thou mightest be boundH631 to afflictH6031 thee. 7And SamsonH8123 saidH559 unto her, If they bindH631 me with sevenH7651 green withes that were never dried, then shall I becomeH1961 weak, and beH1961 as another manH120. 8Then the lords of the PhilistinesH6430 broughtH5927 up to her sevenH7651 green withes which had not been dried, and she boundH631 him with them. 9Now she had liers-in-wait abiding in the innerH2315 chamberH2315. And she saidH559 unto him, The PhilistinesH6430 are upon thee, SamsonH8123. And he brake the withes, as a string of towH5296 is broken whenH834 it toucheth the fireH784. So his strengthH3581 was not knownH3045.

10And DelilahH1807 saidH559 unto SamsonH8123, Behold, thou hast mocked me, and toldH5046 me liesH3576: nowH6258 tellH5046 me, I pray thee, wherewith thou mightest be boundH631. 11And he saidH559 unto her, If they only bindH631 me with newH2319 ropesH5688 wherewith no workH4399 hath beenH1961 done, then shall I becomeH1961 weak, and beH1961 as another manH120. 12So DelilahH1807 tookH3947 newH2319 ropesH5688, and boundH631 him therewith, and saidH559 unto him, The PhilistinesH6430 are upon thee, SamsonH8123. And the liers-in-wait were abiding in the innerH2315 chamberH2315. And he brake them off his armsH2220 like a threadH2339.

13And DelilahH1807 saidH559 unto SamsonH8123, Hitherto thou hast mocked me, and toldH5046 me liesH3576: tellH5046 me wherewith thou mightest be boundH631. And he saidH559 unto her, If thou weavest the sevenH7651 locks of my headH7218 with the webH4545. 14And she fastened it with the pinH3489, and saidH559 unto him, The PhilistinesH6430 are upon thee, SamsonH8123. And he awaked out of his sleepH8142, and plucked away the pinH3489 of the beam, and the webH4545.

15And she saidH559 unto him, HowH4100 canst thou sayH559, I loveH157 thee, when thy heartH3820 is not with me? thou hast mocked me these threeH7969 timesH6471, and hast not toldH5046 me wherein thy greatH1419 strengthH3581 lieth. 16And it came to pass, when she pressed him daily with her wordsH1697, and urged him, that his soulH5315 wasH1961 vexed unto deathH4191. 17And he toldH5046 her all his heartH3820, and saidH559 unto her, There hath not come a razor upon my headH7218; for I have beenH1961 a NaziriteH5139 unto GodH430 from my mother’sH517 wombH990: if I beH1961 shaven, then my strengthH3581 will goH5927 from me, and I shall becomeH1961 weak, and beH1961 like any other manH120.

18And when DelilahH1807 sawH7200 that he had toldH5046 her all his heartH3820, she sentH7971 and calledH7121 for the lords of the PhilistinesH6430, sayingH559, ComeH5927 up this once, for he hath toldH5046 me all his heartH3820. Then the lords of the PhilistinesH6430 cameH5927 up unto her, and broughtH5927 the moneyH3701 in their handH3027. 19And she made him sleepH3462 upon her knees; and she calledH7121 for a manH376, and shavedH1548 off the sevenH7651 locks of his headH7218; and she beganH2490 to afflictH6031 him, and his strengthH3581 went from him. 20And she saidH559, The PhilistinesH6430 are upon thee, SamsonH8123. And he awokeH3364 out of his sleepH8142, and saidH559, I will goH3318 out as at other timesH6471, and shakeH5287 myself free. But he knewH3045 not that Jehovah was departed from him. 21And the PhilistinesH6430 laid holdH270 on him, and put out his eyesH5869; and they broughtH3381 him downH3381 to GazaH5804, and boundH631 him with fettersH5178 of brass; and he did grindH2912 in the prison-house. 22Howbeit the hairH8181 of his headH7218 beganH2490 to growH6779 again after he was shaven.

23And the lords of the PhilistinesH6430 gatheredH622 them together to offerH2076 a greatH1419 sacrificeH2077 unto DagonH1712 their godH430, and to rejoice; for they saidH559, Our godH430 hath delivered SamsonH8123 our enemyH341 into our handH3027. 24And when the peopleH5971 sawH7200 him, they praisedH1984 their godH430; for they saidH559, Our godH430 hath delivered into our handH3027 our enemyH341, and the destroyer of our country, who hath slainH2491 manyH7235 of us. 25And it came to pass, when their heartsH3820 wereH1961 merry, that they saidH559, CallH7121 for SamsonH8123, that he may make us sport. And they calledH7121 for SamsonH8123 out of the prison-house; and he made sport before them. And they setH5975 him between the pillarsH5982: 26and SamsonH8123 saidH559 unto the ladH5288 that heldH2388 him by the handH3027, Suffer me that I may feel the pillarsH5982 whereupon the houseH1004 resteth, that I may leanH8172 upon them. 27Now the houseH1004 was fullH4390 of menH376 and womenH802; and all the lords of the PhilistinesH6430 were there; and there were upon the roofH1406 about threeH7969 thousandH505 menH376 and womenH802, that beheld while SamsonH8123 made sport.

28And SamsonH8123 calledH7121 unto Jehovah, and saidH559, O Lord Jehovah, rememberH2142 me, I pray thee, and strengthenH2388 me, I pray thee, onlyH389 this once, O GodH430, that I may be at once avengedH5358 of the PhilistinesH6430 for my twoH8147 eyesH5869. 29And SamsonH8123 took hold of the twoH8147 middleH8432 pillarsH5982 upon which the houseH1004 rested, and leanedH5564 upon them, the oneH259 with his rightH3225 handH3225, and the other with his left. 30And SamsonH8123 saidH559, Let me dieH4191 with the PhilistinesH6430. And he bowed himself with all his might; and the houseH1004 fellH5307 upon the lords, and upon all the peopleH5971 that were therein. So the deadH4191 that he slew at his deathH4191 were more than they that he slew in his lifeH5315. 31Then his brethren and all the houseH1004 of his fatherH1 cameH5927 downH3381, and tookH5375 him, and broughtH5927 him up, and buriedH6912 him between ZorahH6881 and EshtaolH847 in the burying-place of ManoahH4495 his fatherH1. And he judgedH8199 IsraelH3478 twentyH6242 yearsH8141.
