Judges 3

American Standard Version

1Now these are the nationsH1471 which Jehovah left, to prove IsraelH3478 by them, even as many of IsraelH3478 as had not knownH3045 all the warsH4421 of CanaanH3667; 2onlyH7535 that the generationsH1755 of the children of IsraelH3478 might knowH3045, to teachH3925 them warH4421, at the least such as beforetime knewH3045 nothing thereof: 3namely, the fiveH2568 lords of the PhilistinesH6430, and all the CanaanitesH3669, and the SidoniansH6722, and the Hivites that dweltH3427 in mount LebanonH3844, from mount Baal-hermonH1179 unto the entrance of HamathH2574. 4And they were left, to prove IsraelH3478 by them, to knowH3045 whether they would hearken unto the commandmentsH4687 of Jehovah, which he commandedH6680 their fathersH1 by MosesH4872. 5And the children of IsraelH3478 dweltH3427 among the CanaanitesH3669, the HittitesH2850, and the AmoritesH567, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites: 6and they tookH3947 their daughtersH1323 to be their wivesH802, and gaveH5414 their own daughtersH1323 to their sonsH1121 and servedH5647 their godsH430.

7And the children of IsraelH3478 did that which was evilH7451 in the sight of Jehovah, and forgat Jehovah their GodH430, and servedH5647 the Baalim and the Asheroth. 8Therefore the angerH639 of Jehovah was kindled against IsraelH3478, and he soldH4376 them into the handH3027 of Cushan-rishathaimH3573 kingH4428 of Mesopotamia: and the children of IsraelH3478 servedH5647 Cushan-rishathaimH3573 eightH8083 yearsH8141. 9And when the children of IsraelH3478 criedH2199 unto Jehovah, Jehovah raisedH6965 up a saviour to the children of IsraelH3478, who savedH3467 them, even OthnielH6274 the sonH1121 of KenazH7073, Caleb’s youngerH6996 brotherH251. 10And the SpiritH7307 of Jehovah came upon him, and he judgedH8199 IsraelH3478; and he wentH3318 out to warH4421, and Jehovah delivered Cushan-rishathaimH3573 kingH4428 of Mesopotamia into his handH3027: and his handH3027 prevailedH5810 against Cushan-rishathaimH3573. 11And the landH776 had rest fortyH705 yearsH8141. And OthnielH6274 the sonH1121 of KenazH7073 diedH4191.

12And the children of IsraelH3478 again did that which was evilH7451 in the sight of Jehovah: and Jehovah strengthenedH2388 EglonH5700 the kingH4428 of MoabH4124 against IsraelH3478, because they had done that which was evilH7451 in the sight of Jehovah. 13And he gatheredH622 unto him the children of AmmonH5983 and AmalekH6002; and he went and smote IsraelH3478, and they possessedH3423 the cityH5892 of palm-trees. 14And the children of IsraelH3478 servedH5647 EglonH5700 the kingH4428 of MoabH4124 eighteen yearsH8141.

15But when the children of IsraelH3478 criedH2199 unto Jehovah, Jehovah raisedH6965 them up a saviour, EhudH164 the sonH1121 of GeraH1617, the Benjamite, a manH376 left-handedH3225. And the children of IsraelH3478 sentH7971 tributeH4503 by him unto EglonH5700 the kingH4428 of MoabH4124. 16And EhudH164 madeH6213 him a swordH2719 which had twoH8147 edges, a cubit in lengthH753; and he girdedH2296 it under his raiment upon his rightH3225 thighH3409. 17And he offered the tributeH4503 unto EglonH5700 kingH4428 of MoabH4124: now EglonH5700 was a veryH3966 fatH1277 manH376. 18And when he had made an endH3615 of offeringH4503 the tributeH4503, he sentH7971 awayH7971 the peopleH5971 that bare the tributeH4503. 19But he himself turnedH7725 backH7725 from the quarries that were by GilgalH1537, and saidH559, I have a secret errand unto thee, O kingH4428. And he saidH559, Keep silence. And all that stoodH5975 by him wentH3318 out from him. 20And EhudH164 cameH935 unto him; and he was sittingH3427 by himself aloneH905 in the cool upperH5944 roomH5944. And EhudH164 saidH559, I have a message from GodH430 unto thee. And he aroseH6965 out of his seatH3678. 21And EhudH164 put forthH7971 his left handH3027, and tookH3947 the swordH2719 from his rightH3225 thighH3409, and thrustH8628 it into his body: 22and the haft alsoH1571 wentH3318 in after the bladeH3851; and the fatH2459 closed upon the bladeH3851, for he drewH8025 not the swordH2719 out of his body; and it cameH935 out behind. 23Then EhudH164 wentH3318 forthH3318 into the porch, and shutH5462 the doorsH1817 of the upperH5944 roomH5944 upon him, and locked them.

24Now when he was goneH3318 out, his servantsH5650 cameH935; and they sawH7200, and, behold, the doorsH1817 of the upperH5944 roomH2315 were locked; and they saidH559, SurelyH389 he is covering his feetH7272 in the upperH5944 chamberH5944. 25And they tarried till they were ashamedH954; and, behold, he openedH6605 not the doorsH1817 of the upperH5944 roomH5944: therefore they tookH3947 the keyH4668, and openedH6605 them; and, behold, their lordH113 was fallenH5307 downH5307 deadH4191 on the earthH776.

26And EhudH164 escapedH4422 while they tarried, and passedH5674 beyond the quarries, and escapedH4422 unto Seirah. 27And it cameH935 to pass, when he wasH1961 comeH935, that he blewH8628 a trumpetH7782 in the hill-country of EphraimH669; and the children of IsraelH3478 wentH935 downH3381 with him from the hill-country, and he before them. 28And he saidH559 unto them, Follow after me; for Jehovah hath delivered your enemiesH341 the Moabites into your handH3027. And they wentH3381 downH3381 after him, and tookH3920 the fords of the JordanH3383 against the Moabites, and suffered not a manH376 to passH5674 over. 29And they smote of MoabH4124 at that timeH6256 about tenH6235 thousandH505 menH376, every lusty manH376, and every manH376 of valor; and there escapedH4422 not a manH376. 30So MoabH4124 was subduedH3665 that dayH3117 under the handH3027 of IsraelH3478. And the landH776 had rest fourscore yearsH8141.

31And after him wasH1961 ShamgarH8044 the sonH1121 of AnathH6067, who smote of the PhilistinesH6430 sixH8337 hundredH3967 menH376 with an ox-goad: and he alsoH1571 savedH3467 IsraelH3478.
