Jehoash (Joash) Reigns over Judah
1In the seventhH7651 yearH8141 of JehuH3058, 12JehoashH3060 becameH4427 kingH4427, and he reignedH4427 for fortyH705 yearsH8141 in JerusalemH3389; and his mother’sH517 nameH8034 was ZibiahH6645 of BeershebaH884. 2JehoashH3060 didH6213 whatH3477 wasH3477 rightH3477 in the sightH5869 of the LordH3068 allH3605 his daysH3117 that JehoiadaH3077 the priestH3548 instructedH3384 him. 3OnlyH7534 3the highH1116 placesH1116 did not endH5493; the peopleH5971 stillH5750 sacrificedH2076 and burnedH6999 incenseH6999 on the highH1116 placesH1116.
The Temple to Be Repaired
4Then JehoashH3060 saidH559 to the priestsH3548, “AllH3605 the moneyH3701 of the sacredH6944 offeringsH6944 4whichH834 is broughtH935 into the houseH1004 of the LordH3068, in currentH5674 moneyH3701, both 5the moneyH3701 of eachH376 man’sH376 assessmentH6187 and allH3605 the moneyH3701 6whichH834 anyone’sH376 heartH3820 promptsH5927H5921 him to bringH935 into the houseH1004 of the LordH3068, 5the priestsH3548 are to takeH3947 it for themselves, eachH376 from his 7acquaintanceH4378; and they shall repairH2388 8damageH919 to the houseH1004 whereverH3605H834H8033 9any damageH919 is foundH4672.”
6But it cameH1961 aboutH1961 that in the twenty-thirdH6242H7969 yearH8141 of KingH4428 JehoashH3060, 10the priestsH3548 had not repairedH2388 any damageH919 to the houseH1004. 7So KingH4428 JehoashH3060 summonedH7121 JehoiadaH3077 the priestH3548, and the other priestsH3548, and saidH559 to them, “WhyH4069 do you not repairH2388 damageH919 to the houseH1004? NowH6258 then, you are not to takeH3947 any more moneyH3701 from your 11acquaintancesH4378, but giveH5414 it upH5414 for the damageH919 to the houseH1004.” 8The priestsH3548 then agreedH225 that they would not takeH3947 any more moneyH3701 from the peopleH5971, norH1115 would they 12repairH2388 damageH919 to the houseH1004.
9Instead, 13JehoiadaH3077 the priestH3548 14tookH3947 a chestH727 and drilledH5344 a holeH2356 in its lidH1817 and putH5414 it besideH681 the altarH4196, on the rightH3225 sideH3225 as oneH376 comesH935 into the houseH1004 of the LordH3068; and the priestsH3548 who guardedH8104 the thresholdH5592 putH5414 in it allH3605 the moneyH3701 that was broughtH935 into the houseH1004 of the LordH3068. 10When they sawH7200 that there was a greatH7227 amount of moneyH3701 in the chestH727, 15the king’sH4428 scribeH5613 and the highH1419 priestH3548 wentH5927 upH5927 and tiedH6696 it upH6696 in bags, and countedH4487 the moneyH3701 that was foundH4672 in the houseH1004 of the LordH3068. 11And they handedH5414H3027 the moneyH3701 which was assessedH8505 overH5414 to those who didH6213 the workH4399, who hadH6485 the oversightH6485 of the houseH1004 of the LordH3068; and they 16paidH3318 it outH3318 to the carpentersH2796H6086 and the buildersH1129 who workedH6213 on the houseH1004 of the LordH3068; 12and 17to the masonsH1443 and the stonecuttersH2672H68, and for buyingH7069 timberH6086 and cutH4274 stoneH68 to repairH2388 the damageH919 to the houseH1004 of the LordH3068, and for everythingH3605 that 18was laidH3318 outH3318 for the houseH1004 to repairH2388 it. 13HoweverH389 19there were not madeH6213 for the houseH1004 of the LordH3068 20silverH3701 cupsH5592, shearsH4212, bowlsH4219, trumpetsH2689, anyH3605 receptaclesH3627 of goldH2091, or receptaclesH3627 of silverH3701 from the moneyH3701 which was broughtH935 into the houseH1004 of the LordH3068; 14for they gaveH5414 that to those who didH6213 the workH4399, and with it they repairedH2388 the houseH1004 of the LordH3068. 15Moreover, 21they did not requireH2803 anH2803 accountingH2803 fromH2803 the menH376 into whoseH834 handsH3027 they gaveH5414 the moneyH3701 to payH5414 to those who didH6213 the workH4399, becauseH3588 they actedH6213 faithfullyH530. 16The 22moneyH3701 from the guiltH817 offeringsH817 and 23the moneyH3701 from the sinH2403 offeringsH2403 was not broughtH935 into the houseH1004 of the LordH3068; 24it belongedH1961 to the priestsH3548.
17ThenH227 25HazaelH2371 the kingH4428 of AramH758 wentH5927 upH5927 and foughtH3898 againstH5921 GathH1661 and capturedH3920 it, and 26HazaelH2371 27wasH7760 intentH7760H6440 on goingH5927 upH5927 againstH5921 JerusalemH3389. 18So 28JehoashH3060 kingH4428 of JudahH3063 tookH3947 allH3605 the sacredH6944 offeringsH6944 that JehoshaphatH3092, JehoramH3088, and AhaziahH274, his fathersH1, kingsH4428 of JudahH3063, had consecratedH6942, and 29his own sacredH6944 offeringsH6944, and allH3605 the goldH2091 that was foundH4672 among the treasuriesH214 of the houseH1004 of the LordH3068 and of the king’sH4428 houseH1004, and sentH7971 them to HazaelH2371 kingH4428 of AramH758. Then he withdrewH5927 from JerusalemH3389.
Joash (Jehoash) Succeeded by Amaziah in Judah
19Now as for the restH3499 of the actsH1697 of JoashH3060 and everythingH3605 that he didH6213, are they not writtenH3789 in the BookH5612 of the ChroniclesH1697H3117 of the KingsH4428 of JudahH3063? 20And 30his servantsH5650 roseH6965 upH6965 and formedH7194 a conspiracyH7195; and they 31struckH5221 andH5221 killedH5221 JoashH3060 at 32the houseH1004 of MilloH4407 as he was goingH3381 downH3381 to SillaH5538. 21For JozacarH3108 the sonH1121 of ShimeathH8100 and JehozabadH3075 the sonH1121 of 33ShomerH7763, his servantsH5650, struckH5221 him and he diedH4191; and they buriedH6912 him with his fathersH1 in the cityH5892 of DavidH1732, and his sonH1121 34AmaziahH558 becameH4427 kingH4427 inH8478 his placeH8478.
