Kings of Israel: Jehoahaz and Jehoash
1In the twenty-thirdH6242H7969 yearH8141 of JoashH3060 the sonH1121 of AhaziahH274, kingH4428 of JudahH3063, JehoahazH3059 the sonH1121 of JehuH3058 becameH4427 kingH4427 overH5921 IsraelH3478 at SamariaH8111, and he reigned for seventeenH7651H6240 yearsH8141. 2He didH6213 evilH7451 in the sightH5869 of the LordH3068, and followedH1980H310 the sinsH2403 of JeroboamH3379 the sonH1121 of NebatH5028, 1into whichH834 he misledH2398 IsraelH3478; he did not turnH5493 from them. 32So the angerH639 of the LordH3068 was kindledH2734 against IsraelH3478, and He continuallyH3605H3117 handedH5414H3027 them overH5414 to 3HazaelH2371 kingH4428 of AramH758, and to 4Ben-hadadH1130, the sonH1121 of HazaelH2371. 4Then 5JehoahazH3059 appeasedH2470H6440 the LordH3068, and the LordH3068 listenedH8085 to him; for 6He sawH7200 the oppressionH3906 of IsraelH3478, howH3588 the kingH4428 of AramH758 oppressedH3905 them. 5And the LordH3068 gaveH5414 IsraelH3478 a 78saviorH3467, so that they 9escapedH3318 from underH8478 the handH3027 of the ArameansH758; and the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 livedH3427 in their tentsH168 as previouslyH8032H8543. 6NeverthelessH389 they did not abandonH5493H4480 the sinsH2403 of the houseH1004 of JeroboamH3379, 10into whichH834 he misledH2398 IsraelH3478; rather, they walkedH1980 in 11them; and 12the 13AsherahH842 alsoH1571 remained standingH5975 in SamariaH8111. 7For he leftH7604 to JehoahazH3059 noH3808 moreH3588H518 of the 14armyH5971 thanH3588H518 fiftyH2572 horsemenH6571, tenH6235 chariotsH7393, and tenH6235 thousandH505 infantryH7273, becauseH3588 the kingH4428 of AramH758 had eliminatedH6 them and 15madeH7760 them like the dustH6083 at threshingH1758. 8Now as for the restH3499 of the actsH1697 of JehoahazH3059, and allH3605 that he didH6213 and his mightH1369, are they not writtenH3789 in the BookH5612 of the ChroniclesH1697H3117 of the KingsH4428 of IsraelH3478? 9And JehoahazH3059 16layH7901 downH7901 with his fathersH1, and they buriedH6912 him in SamariaH8111; and his sonH1121 JoashH3060 becameH4427 kingH4427 inH8478 his placeH8478.
10In the thirty-seventhH7970H7651 yearH8141 of JoashH3060 kingH4428 of JudahH3063, 17JehoashH3060 the sonH1121 of JehoahazH3059 becameH4427 kingH4427 overH5921 IsraelH3478 in SamariaH8111, and he reigned for sixteenH8337H6240 yearsH8141. 11He didH6213 evilH7451 in the sightH5869 of the LordH3068; he did not turnH5493 awayH5493 from allH3605 the sinsH2403 of JeroboamH3379 the sonH1121 of NebatH5028, into whichH834 he misledH2398 IsraelH3478; rather, he walkedH1980 in 18them. 1219Now as for the restH3499 of the actsH1697 of JoashH3060 and allH3605 that he didH6213, and his mightH1369 with whichH834 he foughtH3898 againstH5973 AmaziahH558 kingH4428 of JudahH3063, are they not writtenH3789 in the BookH5612 of the ChroniclesH1697H3117 of the KingsH4428 of IsraelH3478? 13So JoashH3060 20layH7901 downH7901 with his fathersH1, and JeroboamH3379 satH3427 on his throneH3678; and JoashH3060 was buriedH6912 in SamariaH8111 with the kingsH4428 of IsraelH3478.
Death of Elisha
14When ElishaH477 21becameH2470 sickH2470 with the illnessH2483 of whichH834 he was to dieH4191, JoashH3060 the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 cameH3381 downH3381 to him, and weptH1058 overH5921 22him and saidH559, “23My fatherH1, my fatherH1, the chariotsH7393 of IsraelH3478 and its horsemenH6571!” 15And ElishaH477 saidH559 to him, “TakeH3947 a bowH7198 and arrowsH2671.” So he 24tookH3947 a bowH7198 and arrowsH2671. 16Then Elisha saidH559 to the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478, “LayH7392 your handH3027 on the bowH7198.” And he laidH7392 his handH3027 on it, then ElishaH477 putH7760 his handsH3027 on the king’sH4428 handsH3027. 17And he saidH559, “OpenH6605 the windowH2474 toward the eastH6924,” and he openedH6605 it. Then ElishaH477 saidH559, “ShootH3384!” So he shotH3384. And he saidH559, “The Lord’sH3068 arrowH2671 of victoryH8668, and the arrowH2671 of victoryH8668 over AramH758; for you will 25defeatH5221 the ArameansH758 at 26AphekH663 untilH5704 you have putH3615 anH3615 endH3615 to them.” 18Then he saidH559, “TakeH3947 the arrowsH2671,” and he tookH3947 them. And he saidH559 to the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478, “StrikeH5221 the groundH776,” and he struckH5221 it threeH7969 timesH6471 and 27stoppedH5975. 19Then 28the manH376 of GodH430 becameH7107 angryH7107 at him and saidH559, “You should have struckH5221 fiveH2568 orH176 sixH8337 timesH6471, thenH227 you would have struckH5221 AramH758 untilH5704 you putH3615 anH3615 endH3615 to it. But nowH6258 you shall strikeH5221 AramH758 29only threeH7969 timesH6471.”
20And ElishaH477 diedH4191, and they buriedH6912 him. Now 30the maraudingH1416 bandsH1416 of the MoabitesH4124 would invadeH935 the landH776 31in the springH935 of the yearH8141. 21And as they were buryingH6912 a manH376, beholdH2009, they sawH7200 a maraudingH1416 bandH1416; and they threwH7993 the manH376 into the graveH6913 of ElishaH477. And when the manH376 32touchedH5060 the bonesH6106 of ElishaH477 he 33revivedH2421 and stoodH6965 upH6965 on his feetH7272.
22Now 34HazaelH2371 kingH4428 of AramH758 had oppressedH3905 IsraelH3478 allH3605 the daysH3117 of JehoahazH3059. 23But the 35LordH3068 wasH2603 graciousH2603 to them and 36hadH7355 compassionH7355 onH7355 them and turnedH6437 to them becauseH4616 of 37His covenantH1285 with AbrahamH85, IsaacH3327, and JacobH3290; and He was unwillingH3808H14 to eliminateH7843 them or castH7993 them awayH7993 from His presenceH6440 untilH5704 nowH6258.
24When HazaelH2371 kingH4428 of AramH758 diedH4191, his sonH1121 Ben-hadadH1130 becameH4427 kingH4427 inH8478 his placeH8478. 25Then 38JehoashH3060 the sonH1121 of JehoahazH3059 againH7725 tookH3947 from the handH3027 of Ben-hadadH1130 the sonH1121 of HazaelH2371 the citiesH5892 whichH834 he had takenH3947 in warH4421 from the handH3027 of his fatherH1 JehoahazH3059. 39ThreeH7969 timesH6471 JoashH3060 40defeatedH5221 him and recoveredH7725 the citiesH5892 of IsraelH3478.
