1 Samuel 10

1Then SamuelH8050 tookH3947 a flaskH6378 of oilH8081, poured itH3332 onH5921 Saul’s headH7218, kissed himH5401, and saidH559, “Has notH3808H3588 the LORDH3068 anointed youH4886 rulerH5057 overH5921 His inheritanceH5159?1 2When you leaveH1980 meH5978 todayH3117, you will findH4672 twoH8147 menH582 atH5973 Rachel’sH7354 tombH6900 in ZelzahH6766 on the borderH1366 of BenjaminH1144. They will sayH559 to youH413, ‘The donkeysH860 you seekH1980H1245 have been foundH4672, and nowH2009 your fatherH1 has stoppedH5203 worrying aboutH1697 the donkeysH860 and started worryingH1672 about you, askingH559, “WhatH4100 should I doH6213 about my sonH1121?”’

3Then you will goH2498 onH1973 from thereH8033 until you comeH935 toH5704 the OakH4362 of TaborH8396. ThreeH7969 menH582 going upH5927 toH413 GodH430 at BethelH1008 will meet youH4672 thereH8033, oneH259 carryingH5375 threeH7969 young goatsH1423, anotherH259 carryingH5375 threeH7969 loavesH3603 of breadH3899, and anotherH259 carryingH5375 a skinH5035 of wineH3196. 4They will greet youH7592H7965 and giveH5414 you twoH8147 loaves of breadH3899, which you will acceptH3947 from their handsH3027.

5AfterH310 thatH3651 you will comeH935 to GibeahH1389 of GodH430,3 whereH834H8033 the PhilistinesH6430 have an outpostH5333H1961. As you approachH935H8033 the cityH5892, you will meetH6293 a groupH2256 of prophetsH5030 coming downH3381 from the high placeH1116, precededH6440 by harpsH5035, tambourinesH8596, flutesH2485, and lyresH3658, and theyH1992 will be prophesyingH5012.

6Then the SpiritH7307 of the LORDH3068 will rushH6743 upon youH5921, and you will prophesyH5012 with themH5973; and you will be transformedH2015 into a differentH312 personH376.

WhenH3588 theseH428 signsH226 have comeH935, doH6213 as the occasionH834 demandsH4672H3027, forH3588 GodH430 is with youH5973. 8And you shall goH3381 before meH6440 to GilgalH1537, and surelyH2009 IH595 will comeH3381 to youH413 to offerH5927 burnt offeringsH5930 and to sacrificeH2076 peace offeringsH8002H2077. WaitH3176 sevenH7651 daysH3117 untilH5704 I comeH935 to youH413 and showH3045 you whatH834 you are to doH6213.”

Samuel’s Signs Fulfilled

As Saul turnedH6437H7926 to leaveH1980H5973 SamuelH8050, GodH430 changedH2015 Saul’s heartH3820H312, and allH3605 the signsH226H428 came to passH935 thatH1931 dayH3117. 10When Saul and his servant arrivedH935H8033 at GibeahH1389H2009,4 a groupH2256 of prophetsH5030 met himH7122. Then the SpiritH7307 of GodH430 rushedH6743 upon himH5921, and he prophesiedH5012 along with themH8432.

11WhenH1961 all thoseH3605 who had formerlyH865 knownH3045H8032 Saul saw himH7200H2009 prophesyingH5012 withH5973 the prophetsH5030, they askedH559H5971 oneH376 anotherH413H7453, “WhatH4100H2088 has happenedH1961 to the sonH1121 of KishH7027? Is SaulH7586 alsoH1571 among the prophetsH5030?”

12Then a manH376 who lived thereH8033H559 repliedH6030, “And whoH4310 is their fatherH1?” SoH5921 the sayingH3651 becameH1961 a proverbH4912: “Is SaulH7586 alsoH1571 among the prophetsH5030?”

13And when Saul had finishedH3615 prophesyingH5012, he went upH935 to the high placeH1116.

14Now Saul’sH7586 uncleH1730 askedH559 himH413 andH413 his servantH5288, “WhereH575 did you goH1980?”

“To look forH1245 the donkeysH860,” Saul repliedH559. “When we sawH7200H3588 they were not to be foundH369, we wentH935 toH413 SamuelH8050.”

15“TellH5046 me,” Saul’sH7586 uncleH1730 askedH559, “whatH4100 did SamuelH8050 say to youH559?”

16And SaulH7586H413 repliedH559, “He assuredH5046 us thatH3588 the donkeysH860 had been foundH4672.” But Saul did notH3808 tellH5046 his uncle whatH834 SamuelH8050 had saidH559 aboutH1697 the kingshipH4410.

Saul Proclaimed King

17After this, SamuelH8050 summonedH6817 the peopleH5971 toH413 the LORDH3068 at MizpahH4709 18and saidH559 toH413 the IsraelitesH1121H3478, “This is whatH3541 the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, saysH559: ‘IH595 broughtH5927 IsraelH3478 up out of EgyptH4714, and I rescuedH5337 youH853 from the handsH3027 of the EgyptiansH4714H3027 and of allH3605 the kingdomsH4467 that oppressed youH3905.’

19But todayH3117 youH859 have rejectedH3988 your GodH430, whoH834H1931 savesH3467 you from allH3605 your troublesH7451 and afflictionsH6869, and you have saidH559 to Him, ‘NoH3588, setH7760 a kingH4428 over usH5921.’ Now thereforeH6258 present yourselvesH3320 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068 by your tribesH7626 and clansH505.”

20Thus SamuelH8050 had allH3605 the tribesH7626 of IsraelH3478 come forwardH7126, and the tribeH7626 of BenjaminH1144 was selectedH3920. 21Then he had the tribeH7626 of BenjaminH1144 come forwardH7126 by its clansH4940, and the clanH4940 of MatriH4309 was selectedH3920.5 Finally, SaulH7586 sonH1121 of KishH7027 was selectedH3920. But when they looked for himH1245, they could notH3808 find himH4672. 22So againH5750 they inquiredH7592 of the LORDH3068, “Has the manH376 comeH935 hereH1988 yetH5750?”

And the LORDH3068 repliedH559, “BeholdH2009, he has hiddenH2244 himselfH1931 amongH413 the baggageH3627.”

23So they ranH7323 and broughtH3947 Saul, and when he stoodH3320 amongH8432 the peopleH5971, he was a headH7926H4605 tallerH1361 than anyH3605 of the othersH5971. 24SamuelH8050 saidH559 toH413 allH3605 the peopleH5971, “Do you seeH7200 the oneH834 the LORDH3068H3588 has chosenH977? There is no oneH369 like himH3644 among allH3605 the peopleH5971.”

And allH3605 the peopleH5971H559 shoutedH7321, “Long liveH2421 the kingH4428!”

25Then SamuelH8050 explainedH1696 toH413 the peopleH5971 the rightsH4941 of kingshipH4410. He wrote themH3789 on a scrollH5612 and laid it upH5117 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068. And SamuelH8050 sent allH3605 the peopleH5971 awayH7971, eachH376 to his own homeH1004.

26SaulH7586 alsoH1571 wentH1980 to his homeH1004 in GibeahH1390, and the men of valorH2428 whoseH834 heartsH3820 GodH430 had touchedH5060 wentH1980 with himH5973.

27But some worthlessH1100 menH1121 saidH559, “HowH4100 can thisH2088 man save usH3467?” So they despised himH959 and broughtH935 him noH3808 giftsH4503; but Saul remainedH1961 silentH2790 about it.6
