1Then the sonsבְנֵי־ve.nei-H1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֛לYis.ra.'ElH3478didוַיַּעֲשׂ֧וּvai.ya.'a.SuH6213whatH7451wasH7451evilהָרַ֖עha.Ra'H7451in the sightבְּעֵינֵ֣יbe.'ei.NeiH5869of the Lordיְהוָ֑הYah.wehH3068;and the Lordיְהוָ֛הYah.wehH3068handedבְּיַד־be.yad-H5414 H3027them overH5414toMidianמִדְיָ֖ןmid.YanH4080for sevenשֶׁ֥בַעShe.va'H7651yearsשָׁנִֽים׃sha.NimH8141.

2Thepowerיַד־yad-H3027of Midianמִדְיָ֖ןmid.YanH4080prevailedוַתָּ֥עָזva.Ta.'ozH5810againstעַל־'al-H5921Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֑לYis.ra.'ElH3478.Becauseמִפְּנֵ֨יmi.pe.NeiH4480 H6440of Midianמִדְיָ֜ןmid.YanH4080the sonsבְּנֵ֣יbe.NeiH1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֗לYis.ra.'ElH3478madeעָשֽׂוּ'a.SuH6213for themselvesthe densהַמִּנְהָרוֹת֙ha.min.ha.rOtH4492whichאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834were in the mountainsבֶּֽהָרִ֔יםbe.ha.RimH2022and the cavesהַמְּעָר֖וֹתha.me.'a.RotH4631and the strongholdsהַמְּצָדֽוֹת׃ha.me.tza.DotH4679.

3For wheneverוְהָיָ֖ה אִם־ve.ha.Yah 'im-H1961 H518Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֑לYis.ra.'ElH3478had sownזָרַ֣עza.Ra'H2232,the Midianitesמִדְיָ֧ןmid.YanH4080would comeH5927upH5927with the Amalekitesוַֽעֲמָלֵ֛קva.'a.ma.LekH6002and thepeopleוּבְנֵי־u.ve.nei-H1121of the eastקֶ֖דֶםKe.demH6924andmarchH5927againstעָלָֽיו׃'a.LavH5921them.

4So they would campוַיַּחֲנ֣וּvai.ya.cha.NuH2583againstעֲלֵיהֶ֗ם'a.lei.HemH5921them anddestroyוַיַּשְׁחִ֙יתוּ֙vai.yash.Chi.tuH7843the produceיְב֣וּלye.VulH2981of the earthהָאָ֔רֶץha.'A.retzH776as farעַד־ בּוֹאֲךָ֖'ad- bo.'a.KhaH5704 H935as Gazaעַזָּ֑ה'a.ZahH5804, andleaveיַשְׁאִ֤ירוּyash.'I.ruH7604noוְלֹֽא־ve.lo'-H3808sustenanceמִֽחְיָה֙mich.YahH4241in Israelבְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לbe.Yis.ra.'ElH3478,nor a sheepוְשֶׂ֥הve.SehH7716,oxוָשׁ֖וֹרva.ShorH7794,or donkeyוַחֲמֽוֹר׃va.cha.MorH2543.

5For they would comeH5927upH5927with their livestockוּמִקְנֵיהֶ֨םu.mik.nei.HemH4735and their tentsוְאָהֳלֵיהֶ֗םve.'o.ho.lei.HemH168,they would comeH935inH935like locustsאַרְבֶּה֙'ar.BehH697in numberלָרֹ֔בla.RoH7230, and boththey and their camelsוְלִגְמַלֵּיהֶ֖םve.lig.ma.lei.HemH1581were innumerableאֵ֣ין מִסְפָּ֑ר'ein mis.ParH369 H4557;and they cameH935into the landבָאָ֖רֶץva.'A.retzH776to ruinלְשַׁחֲתָֽהּ׃le.sha.cha.TahH7843it.

6So Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֛לYis.ra.'ElH3478was broughtH1809veryמְאֹ֖דme.'OdH3966lowוַיִּדַּ֧לvai.yi.DalH1809becauseמִפְּנֵ֣יmi.pe.NeiH4480 H6440of Midianמִדְיָ֑ןmid.YanH4080,and the sonsבְנֵֽי־ve.nei-H1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖לYis.ra.'ElH3478criedH2199outH2199to the Lordיְהוָֽה׃ פYah.wehH3068.

7Now it cameH1961aboutH1961,whenכִּֽי־ki-H3588the sonsבְנֵֽי־ve.nei-H1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖לYis.ra.'ElH3478criedH2199outH2199to the Lordיְהוָ֑הYah.wehH3068on accountאֹד֥וֹת'o.DotH182of Midianמִדְיָֽן׃mid.YanH4080,

8that the Lordיְהוָ֛הYah.wehH3068sentוַיִּשְׁלַ֧חvai.yish.LachH7971a prophetנָבִ֖יאna.Vi'H5030to the sonsבְּנֵ֣יbe.NeiH1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֑לYis.ra.'ElH3478, andhe saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to them, “ThisH3541isH3541whatH3541the Lordיְהוָ֣ה׀Yah.wehH3068,the Godאֱלֹהֵ֣י'e.lo.HeiH430of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֗לYis.ra.'ElH3478saysאָמַ֥ר'a.MarH559: ‘It was I who broughtH5927you upH5927from Egyptמִמִּצְרַ֔יִםmi.mitz.Ra.yimH4714,and broughtH3318you outH3318of the houseמִבֵּ֥יתmi.BeitH1004ofslaveryעֲבָדִֽים׃'a.va.DimH5650.

9And I rescuedוָאַצִּ֤לva.'a.TzilH5337you from the handsמִיַּ֣דmi.YadH3027of the EgyptiansH4714,and from the handsוּמִיַּ֖דu.mi.YadH3027of allכָּל־kol-H3605your oppressorsלֹחֲצֵיכֶ֑םlo.cha.tzei.KhemH3905,and I droveH1644them outH1644from you and gaveוָאֶתְּנָ֥הva.'e.te.NahH5414you their landאַרְצָֽם׃'ar.TzamH776,

10and I saidוָאֹמְרָ֣הva.'o.me.RahH559to you, “I am the Lordיְהוָ֣הYah.wehH3068your Godאֱלֹהֵיכֶ֔ם'e.lo.hei.KhemH430; youshall not fearתִֽירְאוּ֙ti.re.'UH3372the godsאֱלֹהֵ֣י'e.lo.HeiH430of the Amoritesהָאֱמֹרִ֔יha.'e.mo.RiH567in whoseאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834landבְּאַרְצָ֑םbe.'ar.TzamH776you liveיוֹשְׁבִ֣יםyo.she.VimH3427.” But you have notobeyedשְׁמַעְתֶּ֖ם בְּקוֹלִֽי׃ פshe.ma'.Tem be.ko.LiH8085 H6963Me.’”

Gideon Is Visited

11Thenthe angelמַלְאַ֣ךְmal.'AkhH4397of the Lordיְהוָ֗הYah.wehH3068cameוַיָּבֹ֞אvai.ya.Vo'H935and satוַיֵּ֙שֶׁב֙vai.Ye.shevH3427underתַּ֤חַתTa.chatH8478theoakהָֽאֵלָה֙ha.'e.LahH424that was in Ophrahבְּעָפְרָ֔הbe.'a.fe.RahH6084,whichH834belonged to JoashH3060theAbiezriteH33,as his sonבְּנ֗וֹbe.NoH1121Gideonוְגִדְע֣וֹןve.gid.'onH1439was beatingH2251outH2251wheatחִטִּים֙chi.TimH2406in the wineH1660pressH1660in order to saveלְהָנִ֖יסle.ha.NisH5127itfrom the Midianitesמִדְיָֽן׃mid.YanH4080.

12And the angelמַלְאַ֣ךְmal.'AkhH4397of the Lordיְהוָ֑הYah.wehH3068appearedוַיֵּרָ֥אvai.ye.Ra'H7200to him and saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to him, “The Lordיְהוָ֥הYah.wehH3068is with you, valiantהֶחָֽיִל׃he.Cha.yilH2428warriorגִּבּ֥וֹרgi.BorH1368.”

13Then Gideonגִּדְעוֹן֙gid.'OnH1439saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to him, “Oבִּ֣יbiH994my lordאֲדֹנִ֔י'a.do.NiH113,if the Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068is with us, whyוְלָ֥מָּהve.La.mahH4100then has allכָּל־kol-H3605thisH2088happenedH4672toH4672us? And whereוְאַיֵּ֣הve.'ai.YehH346are allכָֽל־khol-H3605His miraclesנִפְלְאֹתָ֡יוnif.le.'o.TavH6381whichאֲשֶׁר֩'a.SherH834our fathersאֲבוֹתֵ֜ינוּ'a.vo.Tei.nuH1toldסִפְּרוּ־si.pe.ru-H5608us about, sayingלֵאמֹ֗רle.MorH559, ‘Did the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068not bringהֶעֱלָ֣נוּhe.'e.La.nuH5927us upH5927from Egyptמִמִּצְרַ֙יִם֙mi.mitz.Ra.yimH4714?’ Butnowוְעַתָּה֙ve.'a.TahH6258the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068has abandonedנְטָשָׁ֣נוּne.ta.Sha.nuH5203us and handedבְּכַף־be.khaf-H5414 H3709us overH5414to Midianמִדְיָֽן׃mid.YanH4080.”

14And the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068lookedוַיִּ֤פֶןvai.Yi.fenH6437at him and saidוַיֹּ֗אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Goלֵ֚ךְlekhH1980in thisזֶ֔הZehH2088strengthבְּכֹחֲךָ֣be.kho.cha.KhaH3581of yours and saveוְהוֹשַׁעְתָּ֥ve.ho.sha'.TaH3467Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖לYis.ra.'ElH3478from the handמִכַּ֣ףmi.KafH3709of Midianמִדְיָ֑ןmid.YanH4080.Have I not sentשְׁלַחְתִּֽיךָ׃she.lach.Ti.khaH7971you?”

15But he saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Him, “Oבִּ֣יbiH994Lordאֲדֹנָ֔י'a.do.NaiH136,howבַּמָּ֥הba.MahH4100am I to saveאוֹשִׁ֖יעַ'o.Shi.a'H3467Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֑לYis.ra.'ElH3478?Beholdהִנֵּ֤הhi.NehH2009,my familyאַלְפִּי֙'al.PiH505is the leastהַדַּ֣לha.DalH1800inManassehבִּמְנַשֶּׁ֔הbim.na.ShehH4519,and I am the youngestהַצָּעִ֖ירha.tza.'IrH6810in my father’sאָבִֽי׃'a.ViH1houseבְּבֵ֥יתbe.VeitH1004.”

16Yet the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to him, “I will certainlyכִּ֥יkiH3588be with you, and you willdefeatוְהִכִּיתָ֥ve.hi.ki.TaH5221Midianמִדְיָ֖ןmid.YanH4080as oneאֶחָֽד׃'e.ChadH259manכְּאִ֥ישׁke.'IshH376.”

17SoGideon saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Him, “Ifאִם־'im-H518nowנָ֛אna'H4994I have foundמָצָ֥אתִיma.Tza.tiH4672favorחֵ֖ןchenH2580in Your sightבְּעֵינֶ֑יךָbe.'ei.Nei.khaH5869,then performוְעָשִׂ֤יתָve.'a.Si.taH6213for mea signא֔וֹת'otH226that it is You speakingמְדַבֵּ֥רme.da.BerH1696with me.

18Pleaseנָ֨אna'H4994do not departתָמֻ֤שׁta.MushH4185from hereמִזֶּה֙mi.ZehH2088untilעַד־'ad-H5704I comeבֹּאִ֣יbo.'IH935backto You, and bringוְהֹֽצֵאתִי֙ve.ho.tze.TiH3318outH3318my offeringמִנְחָתִ֔יmin.cha.TiH4503and layוְהִנַּחְתִּ֖יve.hi.nach.TiH5117it beforeלְפָנֶ֑יךָle.fa.Nei.khaH6440You.” And He saidוַיֹּאמַ֕רvai.yo.MarH559, “I will remainאֵשֵׁ֖ב'e.ShevH3427untilעַ֥ד'adH5704you returnשׁוּבֶֽךָ׃shu.Ve.khaH7725.”

19Then Gideonוְגִדְע֣וֹןve.gid.'onH1439wentH935inH935andpreparedוַיַּ֤עַשׂvai.Ya.'asH6213a youngH1423 H5795goatעִזִּים֙'i.ZimH1423 H5795and unleavenedמַצּ֔וֹתma.TzotH4682breadH4682from anephahוְאֵיפַת־ve.'ei.fat-H374of flourקֶ֣מַחKe.machH7058;he putH7760the meatהַבָּשָׂר֙ha.ba.SarH1320in a basketבַּסַּ֔לba.SalH5536and the brothוְהַמָּרַ֖קve.ha.ma.RakH4839in a potבַּפָּר֑וּרba.pa.RurH6517,and broughtH3318themoutH3318to him underתַּ֥חַתTa.chatH8478theoakהָאֵלָ֖הha.'e.LahH424and presentedוַיַּגַּֽשׁ׃ סvai.ya.GashH5066them.

20And the angelמַלְאַ֣ךְmal.'AkhH4397of Godהָאֱלֹהִ֗יםha.'E.lo.HimH430saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to him, “Takeקַ֣חkachH3947the meatהַבָּשָׂ֤רha.ba.SarH1320and the unleavenedהַמַּצּוֹת֙ha.ma.tzOtH4682breadH4682and layוְהַנַּח֙ve.ha.NachH5117themon thisהַלָּ֔זha.LazH1975rockהַסֶּ֣לַעha.Se.la'H5553,and pourשְׁפ֑וֹךְshe.FokhH8210outH8210the brothהַמָּרַ֖קha.ma.RakH4839.”And he didוַיַּ֖עַשׂvai.Ya.'asH6213soכֵּֽן׃KenH3651.

21Then the angelמַלְאַ֣ךְmal.'AkhH4397of the Lordיְהוָ֗הYah.wehH3068putH7971outH7971the endקְצֵ֤הke.TzehH7097of the staffהַמִּשְׁעֶ֙נֶת֙ha.mish.'E.netH4938that was in his handבְּיָד֔וֹbe.ya.DoH3027and touchedוַיִּגַּ֥עvai.yi.Ga'H5060the meatבַּבָּשָׂ֖רba.ba.SarH1320and the unleavenedוּבַמַּצּ֑וֹתu.vam.ma.TzotH4682breadH4682; andfireהָאֵ֜שׁha.'EshH784cameH5927upH5927from the rockהַצּ֗וּרha.TzurH6697and consumedוַתֹּ֤אכַלva.To.khalH398the meatהַבָּשָׂר֙ha.ba.SarH1320and the unleavenedהַמַּצּ֔וֹתha.ma.TzotH4682breadH4682.Then the angelוּמַלְאַ֣ךְu.mal.'AkhH4397of the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068vanishedהָלַ֖ךְha.LakhH1980from his sightמֵעֵינָֽיו׃me.'ei.NavH5869.

22When GideonH1439perceivedוַיַּ֣רְאvai.Yar'H7200that he was the angelמַלְאַ֥ךְmal.'AkhH4397of the LordH3068,he saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Ohאֲהָהּ֙'a.HahH162,Lordאֲדֹנָ֣י'a.do.NaiH136GodH3068!For I have seenרָאִ֙יתִי֙ra.'I.tiH7200the angelמַלְאַ֣ךְmal.'AkhH4397of the LordH3068faceפָּנִ֖יםpa.NimH6440to faceפָּנִֽים׃pa.NimH6440!”

23But the Lordיְהוָ֛הYah.wehH3068saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to him, “Peaceשָׁל֥וֹםsha.LomH7965to you, do not beH3372afraidתִּירָ֑אti.Ra'H3372;you shall not dieתָּמֽוּת׃ta.MutH4191.”

24Then Gideonגִּדְע֤וֹןgid.'onH1439builtוַיִּבֶן֩vai.yi.VenH1129an altarמִזְבֵּ֙חַ֙miz.Be.achH4196thereשָׁ֨םshamH8033to the Lordלַֽיהוָ֔הla.Yah.wehH3068and namedוַיִּקְרָא־vai.yik.ra'-H7121itThe Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068is Peaceשָׁל֑וֹםsha.LomH7965.To thisהַזֶּ֔הha.ZehH2088dayהַיּ֣וֹםhai.YomH3117it is stillעוֹדֶ֕נּוּo.De.nuH5750in Ophrahבְּעָפְרָ֖תbe.'a.fe.RatH6084of the AbiezritesH33.

25Now on the sameהַהוּא֒ha.Hu'H1931nightבַּלַּ֣יְלָהba.Lay.lahH3915the Lordיְהוָ֗הYah.wehH3068saidוַיֹּ֧אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to him, “Takeקַ֤חkachH3947your father’sלְאָבִ֔יךָle.'a.Vi.khaH1bullפַּר־ הַשּׁוֹר֙par- ha.shOrH6499 H7794and a secondהַשֵּׁנִ֖יha.she.NiH8145bullוּפַ֥רu.FarH6499sevenשֶׁ֣בַעShe.va'H7651yearsשָׁנִ֑יםsha.NimH8141old, and tearוְהָרַסְתָּ֗ve.ha.ras.TaH2040downH2040the altarמִזְבַּ֤חmiz.BachH4196of Baalהַבַּ֙עַל֙ha.Ba.'alH1168whichH834belongs to your fatherלְאָבִ֔יךָle.'a.Vi.khaH1,and cutתִּכְרֹֽת׃tikh.RotH3772downH3772theAsherahהָאֲשֵׁרָ֥הha.'a.she.RahH842that is besideעָלָ֖יו'a.LavH5921it;

26and buildוּבָנִ֨יתָu.va.Ni.taH1129an altarמִזְבֵּ֜חַmiz.Be.achH4196to the Lordלַיהוָ֣הla.Yah.wehH3068your Godאֱלֹהֶ֗יךָ'e.lo.Hei.khaH430on the topרֹ֧אשׁroshH7218of thisהַזֶּ֖הha.ZehH2088strongholdהַמָּע֛וֹזha.ma.'ozH4581in an orderlyH4634wayH4634,and takeוְלָֽקַחְתָּ֙ve.la.kach.TaH3947a secondהַשֵּׁנִ֔יha.she.NiH8145bullהַפָּ֣רha.ParH6499and offerוְהַעֲלִ֣יתָve.ha.'a.Li.taH5927a burntעוֹלָ֔הo.LahH5930offeringH5930with the woodבַּעֲצֵ֥יba.'a.TzeiH6086of the Asherahהָאֲשֵׁרָ֖הha.'a.she.RahH842whichאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834you shall cutתִּכְרֹֽת׃tikh.RotH3772downH3772.”

27Then Gideonגִּדְע֜וֹןgid.'onH1439tookוַיִּקַּ֨חvai.yi.KachH3947tenעֲשָׂרָ֤ה'a.sa.RahH6235menH376from his servantsמֵֽעֲבָדָ֔יוme.'a.va.DavH5650and didוַיַּ֕עַשׂvai.Ya.'asH6213as the Lordיְהוָ֑הYah.wehH3068had spokenדִּבֶּ֥רdi.BerH1696to him; and becauseH834he wasH3372tooH4480afraidH3372of his father’sאָבִ֜יו'a.VivH1householdבֵּ֨יתbeitH1004and the menH376of the cityהָעִ֛ירha.'IrH5892to doמֵעֲשׂ֥וֹתme.'a.SotH6213it by dayיוֹמָ֖םyo.MamH3119,he didוַיַּ֥עַשׂvai.Ya.'asH6213it by nightלָֽיְלָה׃La.ye.lahH3915.

The Altar of Baal Destroyed

28When the peopleH376of the cityהָעִיר֙ha.'IrH5892gotH7925upH7925earlyוַיַּשְׁכִּ֜ימוּvai.yash.Ki.muH7925in the morningבַּבֹּ֔קֶרba.Bo.kerH1242,beholdוְהִנֵּ֤הve.hi.NehH2009,the altarמִזְבַּ֣חmiz.BachH4196of Baalהַבַּ֔עַלha.Ba.'alH1168had been tornנֻתַּץ֙nu.TatzH5422downH5422,and the Asherahוְהָאֲשֵׁרָ֥הve.ha.'a.she.RahH842whichאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834had been besideH5921it had been cutכֹּרָ֑תָהko.Ra.tahH3772downH3772,and the secondהַשֵּׁנִ֔יha.she.NiH8145bullהַפָּ֣רha.ParH6499had been offeredהֹֽעֲלָ֔הho.'a.LahH5927on the altarהַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַha.miz.Be.achH4196which had been builtהַבָּנֽוּי׃ha.ba.NuiH1129.

29So they saidוַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙vai.yo.me.RuH559to oneאִ֣ישׁ'ishH376anotherרֵעֵ֔הוּre.'E.huH7453, “Whoמִ֥יmiH4310didעָשָׂ֖ה'a.SahH6213thisהַזֶּ֑הha.ZehH2088thingהַדָּבָ֣רha.da.VarH1697?”And when they searchedוַֽיִּדְרְשׁוּ֙vai.yid.re.ShuH1875and inquiredוַיְבַקְשׁ֔וּvay.vak.ShuH1245,they saidוַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּvai.Yo.me.RuH559, “Gideonגִּדְעוֹן֙gid.'OnH1439the sonבֶּן־ben-H1121of JoashH3060didעָשָׂ֖ה'a.SahH6213thisהַזֶּֽה׃ha.ZehH2088thingהַדָּבָ֥רha.da.VarH1697.”

30Then the menH376of the cityהָעִיר֙ha.'IrH5892saidוַיֹּ֨אמְר֜וּvai.Yo.me.RuH559to JoashH3060, “Bringהוֹצֵ֥אho.Tze'H3318outH3318your sonבִּנְךָ֖bin.KhaH1121,that he may dieוְיָמֹ֑תve.ya.MotH4191,for he has tornנָתַץ֙na.TatzH5422downH5422the altarמִזְבַּ֣חmiz.BachH4196of Baalהַבַּ֔עַלha.Ba.'alH1168,and indeedH3588,he has cutכָרַ֖תkha.RatH3772downH3772the Asherahהָאֲשֵׁרָ֥הha.'a.she.RahH842whichאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834was besideעָלָֽיו׃'a.LavH5921it.”

31But JoashH3060saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to allלְכֹל֩le.KholH3605whoאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834stoodעָמְד֨וּ'a.me.DuH5975againstעָלָ֜יו'a.LavH5921him, “Will you contendתְּרִיב֣וּןte.ri.VunH7378for Baalלַבַּ֗עַלla.Ba.'alH1168,orאִם־'im-H518will you saveתּוֹשִׁיע֣וּןto.shi.'UnH3467him?
