1Then the menאִ֣ישׁ'ishH376of Ephraimאֶפְרַ֗יִם'ef.Ra.yimH669saidוַיֹּאמְר֨וּvai.yo.me.RuH559to Gideon, “Whatמָֽה־mah-H4100is thisהַזֶּה֙ha.ZehH2088thingהַדָּבָ֤רha.da.VarH1697thatyou have doneעָשִׂ֣יתָ'a.Si.taH6213to us, not callingקְרֹ֣אותke.RotH7121upon us whenכִּ֥יkiH3588you wentהָלַ֖כְתָּha.Lakh.taH1980to fightלְהִלָּחֵ֣םle.hi.la.ChemH3898against Midianבְּמִדְיָ֑ןbe.mid.YanH4080?”And they quarreledוַיְרִיב֥וּןvay.ri.VunH7378with him vehementlyבְּחָזְקָֽה׃be.cha.ze.KahH2394.

2But he saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to them, “Whatמֶה־meh-H4100have I doneעָשִׂ֥יתִי'a.Si.tiH6213nowעַתָּ֖ה'a.TahH6258in comparison with you? Is the gleaningעֹלְל֥וֹתo.le.LotH5955of the grapesof Ephraimאֶפְרַ֖יִם'ef.Ra.yimH669not betterט֛וֹבTovH2896thanH4480the vintageמִבְצִ֥ירmiv.TzirH1210of Abiezerאֲבִיעֶֽזֶר׃'a.vi.'E.zerH44?

6But the leadersשָׂרֵ֣יsa.ReiH8269of Succothסֻכּ֔וֹתsu.KotH5523saidוַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙vai.Yo.merH559, “Are the handsהֲ֠כַףHa.khafH3709of Zebahזֶ֧בַחZe.vachH2078and Zalmunnaוְצַלְמֻנָּ֛עve.tzal.mu.Na'H6759alreadyעַתָּ֖ה'a.TahH6258in your handבְּיָדֶ֑ךָbe.ya.De.khaH3027,that we should giveנִתֵּ֥ןni.TenH5414breadלָֽחֶם׃La.chemH3899to your armyלִֽצְבָאֲךָ֖litz.va.'a.KhaH6635?”

7So Gideonגִּדְע֔וֹןgid.'onH1439saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “For thisלָכֵ֗ןla.KhenH3651answer,when the Lordיְהוָ֛הYah.wehH3068has handedבְּיָדִ֑יbe.ya.DiH5414 H3027overH5414to me Zebahזֶ֥בַחZe.vachH2078and Zalmunnaצַלְמֻנָּ֖עtzal.mu.Na'H6759, I willthrashוְדַשְׁתִּי֙ve.dash.TiH1758yourbodiesבְּשַׂרְכֶ֔םbe.sar.KhemH1320with the thornsקוֹצֵ֥יko.TzeiH6975of the wildernessהַמִּדְבָּ֖רha.mid.BarH4057and with briersהַֽבַּרְקֳנִֽים׃Ha.bar.ko.NimH1303.”

8Then he wentH5927upH5927from thereמִשָּׁם֙mi.ShamH8033toPenuelפְּנוּאֵ֔לpe.nu.'ElH6439and spokeוַיְדַבֵּ֥רvay.da.BerH1696similarlyH2088to them; and the menH376of Penuelפְנוּאֵ֔לfe.nu.'ElH6439answeredוַיַּעֲנ֤וּvai.ya.'a.NuH6030him justH3512asH3512the menH376of Succothסֻכּֽוֹת׃su.KotH5523had answeredעָנ֖וּ'a.NuH6030.

12When Zebahזֶ֚בַחZe.vachH2078and Zalmunnaוְצַלְמֻנָּ֔עve.tzal.mu.Na'H6759fledוַיָּנ֗וּסוּvai.ya.Nu.suH5127,he pursuedוַיִּרְדֹּ֖ף אַחֲרֵיהֶ֑םvai.yir.Dof 'a.cha.rei.HemH7291 H310them and capturedוַיִּלְכֹּ֞דvai.yil.KodH3920the twoשְׁנֵ֣י׀she.NeiH8147kingsמַלְכֵ֣יmal.KheiH4428of Midianמִדְיָ֗ןmid.YanH4080,Zebahזֶ֙בַח֙ze.vachH2078and Zalmunnaצַלְמֻנָּ֔עtzal.mu.Na'H6759,and routedהֶחֱרִֽיד׃he.che.RidH2729the entireוְכָל־ve.kholH3605armyהַֽמַּחֲנֶ֖הha.ma.cha.NehH4264.

13Then Gideonגִּדְע֥וֹןgid.'onH1439the sonבֶּן־ben-H1121of JoashH3060returnedוַיָּ֛שָׁבvai.Ya.shovH7725from the battleהַמִּלְחָמָ֑הha.mil.cha.MahH4421by the ascentמִֽלְמַעֲלֵ֖הmil.ma.'a.LehH4608of Heresהֶחָֽרֶס׃he.Cha.resH2776.

14And he capturedוַיִּלְכָּד־vai.yil.kod-H3920a youthנַ֛עַרNa.'arH5288fromSuccothסֻכּ֖וֹתsu.KotH5523and questionedוַיִּשְׁאָלֵ֑הוּvai.yish.'a.Le.huH7592him. Then the youthwroteH3789downוַיִּכְתֹּ֨בvai.yikh.ToH3789for him the leadersשָׂרֵ֤יsa.ReiH8269of Succothסֻכּוֹת֙su.kOtH5523and its eldersזְקֵנֶ֔יהָze.ke.Nei.haH2205,seventy-sevenשִׁבְעִ֥יםshiv.'ImH7657menאִֽישׁ׃'IshH376.

15And he cameוַיָּבֹא֙vai.ya.Vo'H935to the menH376of Succothסֻכּ֔וֹתsu.KotH5523and saidוַיֹּ֕אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Beholdהִנֵּ֖הhi.NehH2009Zebahזֶ֣בַחZe.vachH2078and Zalmunnaוְצַלְמֻנָּ֑עve.tzal.mu.Na'H6759,about whomאֲשֶׁר֩'a.SherH834you tauntedחֵרַפְתֶּ֨םche.raf.TemH2778me, sayingלֵאמֹ֗רle.MorH559, ‘Are the handsהֲ֠כַףHa.khafH3709of Zebahזֶ֣בַחZe.vachH2078and Zalmunnaוְצַלְמֻנָּ֤עve.tzal.mu.Na'H6759alreadyעַתָּה֙'a.TahH6258in your handבְּיָדֶ֔ךָbe.ya.De.khaH3027,that we should giveנִתֵּ֛ןni.TenH5414breadלָֽחֶם׃La.chemH3899to your menH376who are wearyהַיְּעֵפִ֖יםhai.ye.'e.FimH3287?’”

16Then he tookוַיִּקַּח֙vai.yi.KachH3947the eldersזִקְנֵ֣יzik.NeiH2205of the cityהָעִ֔ירha.'IrH5892,and thornsקוֹצֵ֥יko.TzeiH6975of the wildernessהַמִּדְבָּ֖רha.mid.BarH4057and briersהַֽבַּרְקֳנִ֑יםha.bar.ko.NimH1303, and hedisciplinedוַיֹּ֣דַעvai.Yo.da'H3045the menH376of Succothסֻכּֽוֹת׃su.KotH5523with them.

17And he toreH5422downH5422the towerמִגְדַּ֥לmig.DalH4026of Penuelפְּנוּאֵ֖לpe.nu.'ElH6439and killedוַֽיַּהֲרֹ֖גvai.ya.ha.RogH2026the menH376of the cityהָעִֽיר׃ha.'IrH5892.

18Then he saidוַיֹּ֗אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Zebahזֶ֙בַח֙ze.vachH2078and Zalmunnaצַלְמֻנָּ֔עtzal.mu.Na'H6759, “Whereאֵיפֹה֙'ei.FohH375werethe menH376whomאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834you killedהֲרַגְתֶּ֖םha.rag.TemH2026at Taborבְּתָב֑וֹרbe.ta.VorH8396?”But they saidוַֽיֹּאמרוּ֙vai.yo.me.RuH559, “You and they were alikeH3644,each oneאֶחָ֕ד'e.ChadH259resemblingכְּתֹ֖אַרke.To.'arH8389the sonבְּנֵ֥יbe.NeiH1121of a kingהַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ha.Me.lekhH4428.”

19And he saidוַיֹּאמַ֕רvai.yo.MarH559, “They weremy brothersאַחַ֥י'a.ChaiH251,the sonsבְּנֵֽי־be.nei-H1121of my motherאִמִּ֖י'i.MiH517. Asthe Lordיְהוָ֗הYah.wehH3068livesחַי־chai-H2416,ifH3863onlyH3863you had let them liveהַחֲיִתֶ֣םha.cha.yi.TemH2421,I would not killהָרַ֖גְתִּיha.Rag.tiH2026you.”

20So he saidוַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙vai.Yo.merH559to Jetherלְיֶ֣תֶרle.Ye.terH3500his firstbornבְּכוֹר֔וֹbe.kho.RoH1060, “Riseק֖וּםkumH6965,killהֲרֹ֣גha.RogH2026them.” But the youthהַנַּ֤עַרha.Na.'arH5288did not drawשָׁלַ֨ףsha.LafH8025his swordחַרְבּוֹ֙char.BoH2719,for he wasH3372afraidיָרֵ֔אya.Re'H3372,becauseH3588he was stillעוֹדֶ֖נּוּo.De.nuH5750a youthנָֽעַר׃Na.'arH5288.

21Then Zebahזֶ֣בַחZe.vachH2078and Zalmunnaוְצַלְמֻנָּ֗עve.tzal.mu.Na'H6759saidוַיֹּ֜אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “RiseH6965upH6965yourselfאַתָּה֙'a.TahH859,and attackוּפְגַע־u.fe.ga'-H6293us; for as the manכָאִ֖ישׁkha.'IshH376,so is his strengthגְּבוּרָת֑וֹge.vu.ra.ToH1369.”So Gideonגִּדְע֗וֹןgid.'onH1439aroseH6965and killedוַֽיַּהֲרֹג֙vai.ya.ha.RogH2026Zebahזֶ֣בַחZe.vachH2078and Zalmunnaצַלְמֻנָּ֔עtzal.mu.Na'H6759, andtookוַיִּקַּח֙vai.yi.KachH3947the crescentH7720amuletsH7720whichאֲשֶׁ֖ר'a.SherH834were on their camels’גְמַלֵּיהֶֽם׃ge.ma.lei.HemH1581necksבְּצַוְּארֵ֥יbe.tza.ve.ReiH6677.

22Then the menאִֽישׁ־'ish-H376of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵל֙Yis.ra.'ElH3478saidוַיֹּאמְר֤וּvai.yo.me.RuH559to Gideonגִּדְע֔וֹןgid.'onH1439, “Ruleמְשָׁל־me.shol-H4910over us, bothגַּם־gam-H1571you and your sonבִּנְךָ֖bin.KhaH1121,your son’sבֶּן־ben-H1121sonבְּנֶ֑ךָbe.Ne.khaH1121asגַּם־gam-H1571wellגַּ֣םgamH1571,for you have savedהוֹשַׁעְתָּ֖נוּho.sha'.Ta.nuH3467us from the handמִיַּ֥דmi.YadH3027of Midianמִדְיָֽן׃mid.YanH4080!”

23But Gideonגִּדְע֔וֹןgid.'onH1439saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to them, “I will not ruleאֶמְשֹׁ֤ל'em.SholH4910over you, norH3808shall my sonבְּנִ֖יbe.NiH1121ruleיִמְשֹׁ֥לyim.SholH4910over you;the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068shall ruleיִמְשֹׁ֥לyim.SholH4910over you.”

24Yet Gideonגִּדְע֗וֹןgid.'onH1439saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to them, “I wouldrequestאֶשְׁאֲלָ֤ה שְׁאֵלָ֔ה'esh.'a.Lah she.'e.LahH7596 H7592of you, that eachאִ֖ישׁ'ishH376of you giveוּתְנוּ־u.te.nu-H5414mean earringנֶ֣זֶםNe.zemH5141from his plunderשְׁלָל֑וֹshe.la.LoH7998.” (For they had goldזָהָב֙za.HavH2091earringsנִזְמֵ֤יniz.MeiH5141,becauseH3588they wereIshmaelitesיִשְׁמְעֵאלִ֖יםyish.me.'e.LimH3459.)

25And they saidוַיֹּאמְר֖וּvai.yo.me.RuH559, “We will certainlyנָת֣וֹןna.TonH5414giveנִתֵּ֑ןni.TenH5414them to you.”So they spreadוַֽיִּפְרְשׂוּ֙vai.yif.re.SuH6566outH6566a garmentהַשִּׂמְלָ֔הha.sim.LahH8071,and everyH376oneH376of them tossedוַיַּשְׁלִ֣יכוּvai.yash.Li.khuH7993an earringנֶ֥זֶםNe.zemH5141thereשָׁ֔מָּהSha.mahH8033from his plunderשְׁלָלֽוֹ׃she.la.LoH7998.

27Gideonגִדְע֜וֹןgid.'onH1439madeוַיַּעַשׂ֩vai.ya.'AsH6213it intoan ephodלְאֵפ֗וֹדle.'e.FodH646,and placedוַיַּצֵּ֨גvai.ya.TzegH3322it in his cityבְעִירוֹ֙ve.'i.RoH5892,Ophrahבְּעָפְרָ֔הbe.'a.fe.RahH6084;but allכָֽל־khol-H3605Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֛לYis.ra.'ElH3478committed infidelityוַיִּזְנ֧וּvai.yiz.NuH2181with it thereשָׁ֑םShamH8033,and it becameוַיְהִ֛יvay.HiH1961a snareלְמוֹקֵֽשׁ׃le.mo.KeshH4170to Gideonלְגִדְע֥וֹןle.gid.'onH1439and his householdוּלְבֵית֖וֹu.le.vei.ToH1004.

Forty Years of Peace

28So Midianמִדְיָ֗ןmid.YanH4080was subduedוַיִּכָּנַ֣עvai.yi.ka.Na'H3665beforeלִפְנֵי֙lif.NeiH6440the sonsבְּנֵ֣יbe.NeiH1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לYis.ra.'ElH3478,and they did not liftלָשֵׂ֣אתla.SetH5375upH5375their headsרֹאשָׁ֑םro.ShamH7218anymoreיָסְפ֖וּya.se.FuH3254.And the landהָאָ֛רֶץha.'A.retzH776wasH8252undisturbedH8252for fortyאַרְבָּעִ֥ים'ar.ba.'ImH705yearsשָׁנָ֖הsha.NahH8141in the daysבִּימֵ֥יbi.MeiH3117of Gideonגִדְעֽוֹן׃ פgid.'onH1439.

29ThenJerubbaalיְרֻבַּ֥עַלye.ru.Ba.'alH3378the sonבֶּן־ben-H1121of JoashH3060wentוַיֵּ֛לֶךְvai.Ye.lekhH1980and livedוַיֵּ֥שֶׁבvai.Ye.shevH3427in his own houseבְּבֵיתֽוֹ׃be.vei.ToH1004.

30Now Gideonוּלְגִדְע֗וֹןu.le.gid.'onH1439hadהָיוּ֙ha.YuH1961seventyשִׁבְעִ֣יםshiv.'ImH7657sonsבָּנִ֔יםba.NimH1121whowere his directיְרֵכ֑וֹye.re.KhoH3409descendantsיֹצְאֵ֖יyo.tze.'EiH3318,for he hadהָ֥יוּHa.yuH1961manyרַבּ֖וֹתra.BotH7227wivesנָשִׁ֥יםna.ShimH802.

31And his concubineוּפִֽילַגְשׁוֹ֙u.fi.lag.ShoH6370whoאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834was in Shechemבִּשְׁכֶ֔םbish.KhemH7927alsoגַם־gam-H1571boreיָֽלְדָה־Yal.dah-H3205him a sonבֵּ֑ןBenH1121, and henamedוַיָּ֥שֶׂם שְׁמ֖וֹvai.Ya.sem she.MoH8034 H7760him Abimelechאֲבִימֶֽלֶךְ׃'a.vi.Me.lekhH40.
