Jephthah and His Successors
1Now the menאִ֣ישׁ'ishH376of Ephraimאֶפְרַ֔יִם'ef.Ra.yimH669were summonedוַיִּצָּעֵק֙vai.yi.tza.'EkH6817,and they crossedH5674to ZaphonH6829; andthey saidוַיֹּאמְר֨וּvai.yo.me.RuH559to Jephthahלְיִפְתָּ֜חle.yif.TachH3316, “Whyמַדּ֣וּעַ׀ma.Du.a'H4069did you crossH5674overH5674to fightלְהִלָּחֵ֣םle.hi.la.ChemH3898against the sonsבִּבְנֵי־biv.nei-H1121of Ammonעַמּ֗וֹןa.MonH5983withoutלֹ֤אlo'H3808callingקָרָ֙אתָ֙ka.Ra.taH7121us to goלָלֶ֣כֶתla.Le.khetH1980with you? We will burnנִשְׂרֹ֥ף בָּאֵֽשׁ׃nis.Rof ba.'EshH8313H784your houseבֵּיתְךָ֕bei.te.KhaH1004downH8313on you!”
2So Jephthahיִפְתָּח֙yif.TachH3316saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to them, “I and my peopleוְעַמִּ֥יve.'a.MiH5971were in a majorמְאֹ֑דme.'OdH3966disputeרִ֗יבRivH7379with the sonsוּבְנֵֽי־u.ve.nei-H1121of Ammonעַמּ֖וֹןa.MonH5983;and I did callוָאֶזְעַ֣קva.'ez.'AkH2199you, but you did not saveהוֹשַׁעְתֶּ֥םho.sha'.TemH3467me from their handמִיָּדָֽם׃mi.ya.DamH3027.
3When I sawוָֽאֶרְאֶ֞הva.'er.'EhH7200that you were noאֵינְךָ֣'ei.ne.KhaH369delivererמוֹשִׁ֗יעmo.Shi.a'H3467, Itookוָאָשִׂ֨ימָהva.'a.Si.mahH7760my lifeנַפְשִׁ֤יnaf.ShiH5315in my handsבְכַפִּי֙ve.kha.PiH3709and crossedH5674overH5674againstH413the sonsבְּנֵ֣יbe.NeiH1121of Ammonעַמּ֔וֹןa.MonH5983,and the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068handedבְּיָדִ֑יbe.ya.DiH5414H3027them overH5414to me. Whyוְלָמָ֞הve.la.MahH4100then have you comeעֲלִיתֶ֥ם'a.li.TemH5927upH5927to me thisהַזֶּ֖הha.ZehH2088dayהַיּ֥וֹםhai.YomH3117to fightלְהִלָּ֥חֶםle.hi.La.chemH3898against me?”
4Then Jephthahיִפְתָּח֙yif.TachH3316gatheredוַיִּקְבֹּ֤ץvai.yik.BotzH6908allכָּל־kol-H3605the menH376of Gileadגִלְעָ֔דgil.'AdH1568and foughtוַיִּלָּ֖חֶםvai.yi.La.chemH3898Ephraimאֶפְרָ֑יִם'ef.Ra.yimH669;and the menH376of Gileadגִלְעָ֜דgil.'AdH1568defeatedוַיַּכּוּ֩vai.ya.KuH5221Ephraimאֶפְרַ֗יִם'ef.Ra.yimH669,becauseכִּ֤יkiH3588they saidאָמְרוּ֙'a.me.RuH559, “You are survivorsפְּלִיטֵ֤יpe.li.TeiH6412of Ephraimאֶפְרַ֙יִם֙'ef.Ra.yimH669,you Gileaditesגִּלְעָ֕דgil.'AdH1568,in the midstבְּת֥וֹךְbe.TokhH8432of Ephraimאֶפְרַ֖יִם'ef.Ra.yimH669andin the midstבְּת֥וֹךְbe.TokhH8432of Manassehמְנַשֶּֽׁה׃me.na.ShehH4519.”
5And the Gileaditesגִּלְעָ֛דgil.'AdH1568tookH3920controlH3920of the crossingH4569placesH4569of the Jordanהַיַּרְדֵּ֖ןhai.yar.DenH3383opposite Ephraimלְאֶפְרָ֑יִםle.'ef.Ra.yimH669.And it happenedוְֽ֠הָיָהVe.ha.yahH1961wheneverכִּ֣יkiH3588any ofthe survivorsפְּלִיטֵ֤יpe.li.TeiH6412of Ephraimאֶפְרַ֙יִם֙'ef.Ra.yimH669saidיֹאמְר֞וּyo.me.RuH559, “Let me crossH5674overH5674,”that the menH376of Gileadגִלְעָ֛דgil.'AdH1568would sayוַיֹּ֨אמְרוּvai.Yo.me.ruH559to him, “Are you an Ephraimiteהַֽאֶפְרָתִ֥יha.'ef.ra.TiH673?”If he saidוַיֹּ֥אמֶֽר׀vai.Yo.merH559, “Noלֹֽא׃Lo'H3808,”
6then they would sayוַיֹּ֣אמְרוּvai.Yo.me.ruH559to him, “Justנָ֨אna'H4994sayאֱמָר־'e.mor-H559, ‘ShibbolethH7642.’”But he saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Sibbolethסִבֹּ֗לֶתsi.Bo.letH5451,” for he was notpreparedיָכִין֙ya.KhinH3559topronounceלְדַבֵּ֣רle.da.BerH1696it correctlyכֵּ֔ןKenH3651.Then they seizedוַיֹּאחֲז֣וּvai.yo.cha.ZuH270him and slaughteredוַיִּשְׁחָט֖וּהוּvai.yish.cha.Tu.huH7819him at the crossingH4569placesH4569of the Jordanהַיַּרְדֵּ֑ןhai.yar.DenH3383.So at that timeבָּעֵ֤תba.'EtH6256forty-twoאַרְבָּעִ֥ים וּשְׁנַ֖יִם'ar.ba.'Im u.she.Na.yimH705H8147thousandאָֽלֶף׃'A.lefH505from Ephraimמֵֽאֶפְרַ֔יִםme.'ef.Ra.yimH669fellוַיִּפֹּ֞לvai.yi.PolH5307.

9He hadוַיְהִי־vay.hi-H1961thirtyשְׁלֹשִׁ֣יםshe.lo.ShimH7970sonsבָּנִ֗יםba.NimH1121,and thirtyוּשְׁלֹשִׁ֤יםu.she.lo.ShimH7970daughtersבָּנוֹת֙ba.nOtH1323whom hegaveH7971inH7971marriageH7971outsideהַח֔וּצָהha.Chu.tzahH2351the family,and he broughtH935inH935thirtyוּשְׁלֹשִׁ֣יםu.she.lo.ShimH7970daughtersבָּנ֔וֹתba.NotH1323from outsideהַח֑וּץha.ChutzH2351for his sonsלְבָנָ֖יוle.va.NavH1121.And he judgedוַיִּשְׁפֹּ֥טvai.yish.PotH8199Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖לYis.ra.'ElH3478for sevenשֶׁ֥בַעShe.va'H7651yearsשָׁנִֽים׃sha.NimH8141.

14He hadוַיְהִי־vay.hi-H1961fortyאַרְבָּעִ֣ים'ar.ba.'ImH705sonsH1121and thirtyוּשְׁלֹשִׁים֙u.she.lo.ShimH7970grandsonsH1121who rodeרֹכְבִ֖יםro.khe.VimH7392on seventyשִׁבְעִ֣יםshiv.'ImH7657donkeysעֲיָרִ֑ם'a.ya.RimH5895;and he judgedוַיִּשְׁפֹּ֥טvai.yish.PotH8199Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖לYis.ra.'ElH3478for eightשְׁמֹנֶ֥הshe.mo.NehH8083yearsשָׁנִֽים׃sha.NimH8141.
