2 Samuel 21
Gibeonite Revenge
1Now there was 1a famineH7458 in the daysH3117 of DavidH1732 for threeH7969 yearsH8141, yearH8141 afterH310 yearH8141; and 2DavidH1732 soughtH1245 the presenceH6440 of the LordH3068. And the LordH3068 saidH559, “It is for SaulH7586 and his bloodyH1818 houseH1004, becauseH5921H834 he putH4191 the GibeonitesH1393 to deathH4191.” 2So the kingH4428 calledH7121 the GibeonitesH1393 and spokeH559 to them (now the GibeonitesH1393 were not of the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 but of the remnantH3499 of the AmoritesH567, and 3the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 4madeH7650 a covenantH7650 with them, but SaulH7586 had soughtH1245 to 5killH5221 them in his zealH7065 for the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 and JudahH3063). 3Thus DavidH1732 saidH559 to the GibeonitesH1393, “WhatH4100 should I doH6213 for you? And howH4100 can I makeH3722 atonementH3722 that you may blessH1288 6the inheritanceH5159 of the LordH3068?” 4Then the GibeonitesH1393 saidH559 to him, “7We haveH369 noH369 concern of silverH3701 or goldH2091 with SaulH7586 or his houseH1004, norH369 is it for us to putH4191 anyH376 manH376 to deathH4191 in IsraelH3478.” And he saidH559, “I will doH6213 for you whateverH4100 you sayH559.” 5So they saidH559 to the kingH4428, “8The manH376 whoH834 consumedH3615 us and whoH834 plannedH1819 9to exterminateH8045 us from remainingH3320 within anyH3605 borderH1366 of IsraelH3478, 6let sevenH7651 menH376 from his sonsH1121 be givenH5414 to us, and we will 10hangH3363 them 11before the LordH3068 in GibeahH1390 of SaulH7586, 12the chosenH972 of the LordH3068.” And the kingH4428 saidH559, “I will giveH5414 them.”
7But the kingH4428 sparedH2550 13MephiboshethH4648, the sonH1121 of JonathanH3083 the sonH1121 of SaulH7586, 14becauseH5921 of the oathH7621 of the LordH3068 whichH834 was betweenH996 them, betweenH996 DavidH1732 and Saul’sH7586 sonH1121 JonathanH3083. 8So the kingH4428 tookH3947 the twoH8147 sonsH1121 of 15RizpahH7532 the daughterH1323 of AiahH345, ArmoniH764 and MephiboshethH4648 whomH834 she had borneH3205 to SaulH7586, and the fiveH2568 sonsH1121 of 1617MerabH4764 the daughterH1323 of SaulH7586, whomH834 she had borneH3205 to AdrielH5741 the sonH1121 of BarzillaiH1271 the 18MeholathiteH4259. 9Then he gaveH5414 them into the handsH3027 of the GibeonitesH1393, and they 19hangedH3363 them in the mountainH2022 beforeH6440 the LordH3068, so that the sevenH7651 of them fellH5307 togetherH3162; and they were putH4191 to deathH4191 in the firstH7223 daysH3117 of harvestH7105 at 20the beginningH8462 of barleyH8184 harvestH7105.
1021And RizpahH7532 the daughterH1323 of AiahH345 tookH3947 sackclothH8242 and spreadH5186 it for herself on the rockH6697, from the beginningH8462 of harvestH7105 untilH5704 22it rainedH5413 on them from the skyH8064; and 23she 24allowedH5414 neitherH3808 the birdsH5775 of the skyH8064 to restH5117 on them by dayH3119 norH3808 the beastsH2421 of the fieldH7704 by nightH3915. 11When it was toldH5046 DavidH1732 whatH834 RizpahH7532 the daughterH1323 of AiahH345, the concubineH6370 of SaulH7586, had doneH6213, 12then DavidH1732 wentH1980 and tookH3947 25the bonesH6106 of SaulH7586 and the bonesH6106 of JonathanH3083 his sonH1121 from the menH1167 of Jabesh-gileadH3003H1568, whoH834 had stolenH1589 them from the openH7339 squareH7339 of 26Beth-shanH1052, 27whereH834H8033 the PhilistinesH6430 had hangedH8518 them on the dayH3117 28the PhilistinesH6430 struckH5221 downH5221 SaulH7586 in GilboaH1533. 13He broughtH5927 up the bonesH6106 of SaulH7586 and the bonesH6106 of JonathanH3083 his sonH1121 from thereH8033, and they gatheredH622 the bonesH6106 of those who had been 29hangedH3363. 14They buriedH6912 the bonesH6106 of SaulH7586 and JonathanH3083 his sonH1121 in the countryH776 of BenjaminH1144 in 30ZelaH6762, in the graveH6913 of KishH7027 his fatherH1; thus they didH6213 allH3605 that the kingH4428 commandedH6680, and afterH310 that 31GodH430 was movedH6279 by prayerH6279 for the landH776.
15Now when 32the PhilistinesH6430 were at warH4421 againH5750 with IsraelH3478, DavidH1732 wentH3381 downH3381 and his servantsH5650 with him; and as they foughtH3898 againstH854 the PhilistinesH6430, DavidH1732 becameH5888 wearyH5888. 16Then Ishbi-benobH3430, whoH834 was 33among the descendantsH3211 of the 34giantH7498, the weightH4948 of whose spearH7013 was threeH7969 hundredH3967 shekels of bronzeH5178 in weightH4948, 35was girdedH2296 with a newH2319 sword, and he 36intendedH559 to killH5221 DavidH1732. 17But 37AbishaiH52 the sonH1121 of ZeruiahH6870 helpedH5826 him, and struckH5221 the PhilistineH6430 and killedH4191 him. ThenH227 the menH376 of DavidH1732 sworeH7650 to him, sayingH559, “38You shall not goH3318 out againH5750 with us to battleH4421, soH3808 that you do not extinguishH3518 39the lampH5216 of IsraelH3478.”
1840Now it cameH1961 about afterH310 thisH3651 that there was warH4421 againH5750 with the PhilistinesH6430 at GobH1359; thenH227 41SibbecaiH5444 the HushathiteH2843 struckH5221 downH5221 SaphH5593, whoH834 was among the descendantsH3211 of the 42giantH7498. 19There was warH4421 with the PhilistinesH6430 againH5750 at GobH1359, and ElhananH445 the sonH1121 of Jaare-oregimH3296 the BethlehemiteH1022 43killedH5221 44GoliathH1555 the GittiteH1663, 45the shaftH6086 of whose spearH2595 was like a weaver’sH707 beamH4500. 20There was warH4421 at GathH1661 againH5750, where there was a manH376 of great statureH4055 who had sixH8337 fingersH676 on each handH3027 and sixH8337 toesH676 on each footH7272, twenty-fourH6242H702 in numberH4557; and he alsoH1571 had been bornH3205 46to the 47giantH7498. 21When he defiedH2778 IsraelH3478, JonathanH3083 the sonH1121 of ShimeiH8096, David’sH1732 brotherH251, struckH5221 him downH5221. 2248TheseH428 fourH702 were bornH3205 to the 49giantH7498 in GathH1661, and they fellH5307 by the handH3027 of DavidH1732 and by the handH3027 of his servantsH5650.
