6Then Hamorחֲמ֥וֹרcha.MorH2544the fatherאֲבִֽי־'a.vi-H1of Shechemשְׁכֶ֖םshe.KhemH7927wentוַיֵּצֵ֛אvai.ye.Tze'H3318out to Jacobיַעֲקֹ֑בya.'a.KoH3290to speakלְדַבֵּ֖רle.da.BerH1696with him.

7Now the sonsוּבְנֵ֨יu.ve.NeiH1121of Jacobיַעֲקֹ֜בya.'a.KoH3290cameבָּ֤אוּBa.'uH935in from the fieldהַשָּׂדֶה֙ha.sa.DehH7704when they heardכְּשָׁמְעָ֔םke.sha.me.'AmH8085it;and the menH376were grievedוַיִּֽתְעַצְּבוּ֙vai.yit.'a.tze.VuH6087,and they were veryמְאֹ֑דme.'OdH3966angryוַיִּ֥חַרvai.Yi.charH2734becauseכִּֽי־ki-H3588he had doneעָשָׂ֣ה'a.SahH6213adisgracefulנְבָלָ֞הne.va.LahH5039thingH5039in Israelבְיִשְׂרָאֵ֗לve.Yis.ra.'ElH3478by lyingלִשְׁכַּב֙lish.KavH7901with Jacob’sיַעֲקֹ֔בya.'a.KoH3290daughterבַּֽת־bat-H1323,for suchH3651a thingH3651ought not to be doneיֵעָשֶֽׂה׃ye.'a.SehH6213.

8But Hamorחֲמ֖וֹרcha.MorH2544spokeוַיְדַבֵּ֥רvay.da.BerH1696with them, sayingלֵאמֹ֑רle.MorH559, “The soulנַפְשׁוֹ֙naf.ShoH5315of my sonבְּנִ֗יbe.NiH1121Shechemשְׁכֶ֣םshe.KhemH7927longsחָֽשְׁקָ֤הcha.she.KahH2836for your daughterבְּבִתְּכֶ֔םbe.vi.te.KhemH1323;pleaseנָ֥אna'H4994giveתְּנ֨וּte.NuH5414her to himin marriageלְאִשָּֽׁה׃le.'i.ShahH802.

9Intermarryוְהִֽתְחַתְּנ֖וּve.hit.cha.te.NuH2859with us; giveתִּתְּנוּ־ti.te.nu-H5414your daughtersבְּנֹֽתֵיכֶם֙be.no.tei.KhemH1323to us and takeתִּקְח֥וּtik.ChuH3947our daughtersבְּנֹתֵ֖ינוּbe.no.Tei.nuH1323for yourselves.

10Thus you shallliveתֵּשֵׁ֑בוּte.She.vuH3427with us, andthe landוְהָאָ֙רֶץ֙ve.ha.'A.retzH776shall be openbeforeלִפְנֵיכֶ֔םlif.nei.KhemH6440you;liveשְׁבוּ֙she.VuH3427andtradeוּסְחָר֔וּהָu.se.cha.Ru.haH5503in it andacquireH270propertyH270in it.”

11Shechemשְׁכֶם֙she.KhemH7927also saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to her fatherאָבִ֣יה'a.VihH1and to her brothersאַחֶ֔יהָ'a.Chei.haH251, “If I findאֶמְצָא־'em.tza'-H4672favorחֵ֖ןchenH2580in your sightבְּעֵינֵיכֶ֑םbe.'ei.nei.KhemH5869,then I will giveאֶתֵּֽן׃'e.TenH5414whateverוַאֲשֶׁ֥רva.'a.SherH834you sayתֹּאמְר֛וּto.me.RuH559to me.

12AskH7235me ever soH3966muchH7235 H3966bridalH4119paymentH4119and giftוּמַתָּ֔ןu.ma.TanH4976,and I will giveוְאֶ֨תְּנָ֔הve.'E.te.NahH5414according as you sayתֹּאמְר֖וּto.me.RuH559to me; but giveוּתְנוּ־u.te.nu-H5414me the girlהַֽנַּעֲרָ֖ha.na.'a.RaH5291in marriageלְאִשָּֽׁה׃le.'i.ShahH802.”

13But Jacob’sיַעֲקֹ֜בya.'a.KoH3290sonsבְנֵֽי־ve.nei-H1121answeredוַיַּעֲנ֨וּvai.ya.'a.NuH6030Shechemשְׁכֶ֨םshe.KhemH7927and his fatherאָבִ֛יו'a.VivH1Hamorחֲמ֥וֹרcha.MorH2544with deceitבְּמִרְמָ֖הbe.mir.MahH4820,becauseאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834he had defiledטִמֵּ֔אti.Me'H2930Dinahדִּינָ֥הdi.NahH1783their sisterאֲחֹתָֽם׃'a.cho.TamH269.

14They saidוַיֹּאמְר֣וּvai.yo.me.RuH559to them, “We cannotלֹ֤א נוּכַל֙lo' nu.KhalH3201 H3808doלַעֲשׂוֹת֙la.'a.soTH6213thisהַזֶּ֔הha.ZehH2088thingהַדָּבָ֣רha.da.VarH1697,to giveלָתֵת֙la.TetH5414our sisterאֲחֹתֵ֔נוּ'a.cho.Te.nuH269tooneלְאִ֖ישׁle.'IshH376whoאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834is uncircumcisedעָרְלָ֑ה'a.re.LahH6190,for that would be a disgraceחֶרְפָּ֥הcher.PahH2781to us.

15Onlyאַךְ־'akh-H389on thisH2088conditionwill we consentנֵא֣וֹתne.'otH225to you: ifאִ֚ם'imH518you will becomeתִּהְי֣וּtih.YuH1961likeכָמֹ֔נוּkha.Mo.nuH3644us, in that everyכָּל־kol-H3605maleזָכָֽר׃za.KharH2145of you be circumcisedלְהִמֹּ֥לle.hi.MolH4135,

16then we will giveוְנָתַ֤נּוּve.na.Ta.nuH5414our daughtersבְּנֹתֵ֙ינוּ֙be.no.Tei.nuH1323to you, and we will takeנִֽקַּֽח־ni.kach-H3947your daughtersבְּנֹתֵיכֶ֖םbe.no.tei.KhemH1323for ourselves, and we willliveוְיָשַׁ֣בְנוּve.ya.Shav.nuH3427with you and becomeוְהָיִ֖ינוּve.ha.Yi.nuH1961oneאֶחָֽד׃'e.ChadH259peopleלְעַ֥םle.'AmH5971.

17But ifוְאִם־ve.'im-H518you will not listenתִשְׁמְע֛וּtish.me.'UH8085to us to be circumcisedלְהִמּ֑וֹלle.hi.MolH4135,then we will takeוְלָקַ֥חְנוּve.la.Kach.nuH3947our daughterבִּתֵּ֖נוּbi.Te.nuH1323and goוְהָלָֽכְנוּ׃ve.ha.La.khe.nuH1980.”
