2 Samuel 21
1During the reignH3117 of DavidH1732 there wasH1961 a famineH7458 for threeH7969 successive yearsH8141H310, and DavidH1732 soughtH1245 the faceH6440 of the LORDH3068.
And the LORDH3068 saidH559, “It is because ofH413 the bloodH1818 shed by SaulH7586 andH413 his familyH1004, becauseH834 he killedH4191 the GibeonitesH1393.”
2At this, DavidH4428 summonedH7121 the GibeonitesH1393 and spokeH559 to themH413. (Now the GibeonitesH1393 wereH1992 notH3808 IsraelitesH1121H3478, butH3588 a remnantH3499 of the AmoritesH567. The IsraelitesH1121H3478 had taken an oath concerning themH7650, but in his zealH7065 for IsraelH1121H3478 and JudahH3063, SaulH7586 had soughtH1245 to kill themH5221.)
3So DavidH1732H413 askedH559 the GibeonitesH1393, “WhatH4100 shall I doH6213 for you? HowH4100 can I make amendsH3722 so that you may blessH1288 the inheritanceH5159 of the LORDH3068?”
4The GibeonitesH1393 saidH559 to him, “We need noH369 silverH3701 or goldH2091 fromH5973 SaulH7586 orH5973 his houseH1004, norH369 should youH376 put to deathH4191 anyone in IsraelH3478 for us.”
“WhateverH4100 youH859 askH559, I will doH6213 for you,” he repliedH559.
5And they answeredH559 the kingH4428, “As for the manH376 whoH834 consumed usH3615 andH834 plottedH1819 against us to exterminate usH8045 from existingH3320 within anyH3605 borderH1366 of IsraelH3478, 6let sevenH7651H582 of his male descendantsH1121 be deliveredH5414 to us so that we may hang themH33631 before the LORDH3068 at GibeahH1390 of SaulH7586, the chosenH972 of the LORDH3068.”
“IH589 will give them to youH5414,” saidH559 the kingH4428.
7Now the kingH4428 sparedH2550H5921 MephiboshethH4648 sonH1121 of JonathanH3083, the sonH1121 of SaulH7586, because ofH5921 the oathH7621 before the LORDH3068 betweenH996 DavidH1732 andH996 JonathanH3083 sonH1121 of SaulH7586. 8But the kingH4428 tookH3947 ArmoniH764 and MephiboshethH4648, the twoH8147 sonsH1121 whomH834 RizpahH7532 daughterH1323 of AiahH345 had borneH3205 to SaulH7586, as well as the fiveH2568 sonsH1121 whomH834 MerabH43242 daughterH1323 of SaulH7586 had borneH3205 to AdrielH5741 sonH1121 of BarzillaiH1271 the MeholathiteH4259. 9And he delivered themH5414 into the handsH3027 of the GibeonitesH1393, and they hanged themH3363 on the hillH2022 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068. So all seven of themH7659 fellH5307 togetherH3162; theyH1992 were put to deathH4191 in the firstH7223 daysH3117 of the harvestH7105, at the beginningH8462 of the barleyH8184 harvestH7105.
10And RizpahH7532 the daughterH1323 of AiahH345 tookH3947 sackclothH8242 and spread it outH5186 for herself onH413 a rockH6697. From the beginningH8462 of the harvestH7105 untilH5704 the rainH4325 from heavenH8064 poured downH5413 on the bodiesH5921, she did not allowH5414H3808 the birdsH5775 of the airH8064 to restH5117 on themH5921 by dayH3119, norH853 the beastsH2416 of the fieldH7704 by nightH3915.
11When DavidH1732 was toldH5046 whatH834 Saul’sH7586 concubineH6370 RizpahH7532, daughterH1323 of AiahH345, had doneH6213, 12heH1732 wentH1980 and tookH3947 the bonesH6106 of SaulH7586 and his sonH1121 JonathanH3083 fromH854 the menH1167 of Jabesh-gileadH3003H1568, who had stolenH1589 themH853 from the public squareH7339 of Beth-shanH1052 whereH834 the PhilistinesH6430 had hungH8518H8033 the bodies afterH3117 they had struck downH5221 SaulH7586 at GilboaH1533.
13So David had the bonesH6106 of SaulH7586 andH853 his sonH1121 JonathanH3083 broughtH5927 from thereH8033, and they also gatheredH622 the bonesH6106 of those who had been hangedH3363. 14And they buriedH6912 the bonesH6106 of SaulH7586 and his sonH1121 JonathanH3083 in ZelaH6762 in the landH776 of BenjaminH1144, in the tombH6913 of Saul’s fatherH1 KishH7027.
AfterH310 they had doneH6213 everythingH3605 the kingH4428 had commandedH6680, GodH430 answered their prayersH6279 for the landH776.
Four Battles against the Philistines
(1 Chronicles 20:4–8)
15Once againH5750H1961 the PhilistinesH6430 waged warH4421 againstH854 IsraelH3478, and DavidH1732 and his servantsH5650H5973 went downH3381 and foughtH3898 againstH854 the PhilistinesH6430. But DavidH1732 became exhaustedH5888.
16Then Ishbi-benobH3430, a descendantH3211 of RaphaH7497,3 whose bronzeH5178 spearH7013 weighedH4948 threeH7969 hundredH3967 shekels4 and whoH1931 was bearingH2296 a newH2319 sword, resolvedH559 to killH5221 DavidH1732. 17But AbishaiH52 sonH1121 of ZeruiahH6870 came to his aidH5826, struckH5221 the PhilistineH6430, and killed himH4191.
ThenH227 David’sH1732 menH582 sworeH7650 to himH559, “You must neverH3808 againH5750 go outH3318 with usH854 to battleH4421, so that the lampH5216 of IsraelH3478 may notH3808 be extinguishedH3518.”
18Some time laterH310H3651H1961 at GobH1359, there wasH1961 anotherH5750 battleH4421 withH5973 the PhilistinesH6430. At that timeH227 SibbecaiH5444 the HushathiteH2843 killedH5221 SaphH5593,5 aH834 descendantH3211 of RaphaH7497.
19Once againH5750 there wasH1961 a battleH4421 withH5973 the PhilistinesH6430 at GobH1359, and ElhananH445 sonH1121 of JairH32966 the BethlehemiteH1022 killedH5221 the brother of GoliathH15557 the GittiteH1663, the shaftH6086 of whose spearH2595 was like a weaver’sH707 beamH4500.
20And there wasH1961 alsoH5750 a battleH4421 at GathH1661, where there was a manH376 of great statureH4060 withH1961 sixH8337 fingersH676 on each handH3027 and sixH8337 toesH676 on each footH7272—twenty-fourH6242H702 in allH4557. HeH1931 tooH1571 was descendedH3205 from RaphaH7497, 21and when he tauntedH2778 IsraelH3478, JonathanH3083 the sonH1121 of David’sH1732 brotherH251 ShimeiH80968 killed himH5221.
So theseH428 fourH702 descendantsH3205 of RaphaH7497 in GathH1661 fellH5307 at the handsH3027 of DavidH1732H3027 and his servantsH5650.
