2 Samuel 5
(1 Chronicles 11:1–3)
1Then allH3605 the tribesH7626 of IsraelH3478 cameH935 toH413 DavidH1732 at HebronH2275 and saidH559, “HereH2005 weH587 are, your own fleshH1320 and bloodH6106. 2EvenH1571H865 in times pastH8032, while SaulH7586 wasH1961 kingH4428 over usH5921, youH859 were the oneH1961 who led Israel outH3318H3478 and brought them backH935. And to you the LORDH3068 saidH559, ‘YouH859 will shepherdH7462 My peopleH5971 IsraelH3478, and youH859 will beH1961 rulerH5057 overH5921 them.’”
3So allH3605 the eldersH2205 of IsraelH3478 cameH935 toH413 the kingH4428 at HebronH2275, where KingH4428 DavidH1732 madeH3772 with them a covenantH1285 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068. And they anointedH4886 him kingH4428 overH5921 IsraelH3478.
4DavidH1732 was thirtyH7970 years oldH1121H8141 when he became kingH4427, and he reignedH4427 fortyH705 yearsH8141. 5In HebronH2275 he reignedH4427 overH5921 JudahH3063 sevenH7651 yearsH8141 and sixH8337 monthsH2320, and in JerusalemH3389 he reignedH4427 thirty-threeH7970H7969 yearsH8141 overH5921 allH3605 IsraelH3478 and JudahH3063.
David Conquers Jerusalem
(1 Chronicles 11:4–9)
6Now the kingH4428 and his menH582 marchedH1980 to JerusalemH3389 againstH413 the JebusitesH2983 who inhabitedH3427 the landH776. The Jebusites saidH559 to DavidH1732: “You will neverH3808 get inH935 hereH2008. EvenH3588H518 the blindH5787 and lameH6455H559 can repel youH5493.” For they thoughtH559, “DavidH1732 cannotH3808 get inH935 hereH2008.”
7Nevertheless, DavidH1732 capturedH3920 the fortressH4686 of ZionH6726 (that isH1931, the CityH5892 of DavidH1732). 8On thatH1931H3605 dayH3117 he saidH559, “Whoever attacksH5221 the JebusitesH2983 must use the water shaftH6794 to reachH5060 the lameH6455 and blindH5787 who are despisedH8130H5315 by DavidH1732.1” That is whyH5921H3651 it is saidH559, “The blindH5787 and the lameH6455 will neverH3808 enterH935H413 the palaceH1004.”
9So DavidH1732 took up residenceH3427 in the fortressH4686 and calledH7121 it the CityH5892 of DavidH1732. HeH1732 built it upH1129 all the way aroundH5439, fromH4480 the supporting terracesH44072 inwardH1004. 10And DavidH1732 becameH1980 greaterH1980 and greaterH1431, for the LORDH3068 GodH430 of HostsH6635 was with himH5973.
11Now HiramH2438 kingH4428 of TyreH6865 sentH7971 envoysH4397 toH413 DavidH1732, along with cedarH730 logsH6086, carpentersH2796H6086, and stonemasonsH2796H68H7023, and they builtH1129 a palaceH1004 for DavidH1732.
David’s Family Grows
(1 Chronicles 14:1–7)
12And DavidH1732 realizedH3045 thatH3588 the LORDH3068 had established himH3559 as kingH4428 overH5921 IsraelH3478H3588 and had exaltedH5375 his kingdomH4467 for the sake ofH5668 His peopleH5971 IsraelH3478.
13AfterH310 he had arrivedH935 from HebronH2275, DavidH1732 tookH3947 moreH5750 concubinesH6370 and wivesH802 from JerusalemH3389, and moreH5750 sonsH1121 and daughtersH1323 were bornH3205 to himH1732. 14TheseH428 are the namesH8034 of the children bornH3209 to him in JerusalemH3389: ShammuaH8051,3 ShobabH7727, NathanH5416, SolomonH8010, 15IbharH2984, ElishuaH474, NephegH5298, JaphiaH3309, 16ElishamaH476, EliadaH450, and ElipheletH467.
Two Victories over the Philistines
(1 Chronicles 14:8–17)
17When the PhilistinesH6430 heardH8085 thatH3588 DavidH1732 had been anointedH4886 kingH4428 overH5921 IsraelH3478, theyH6430 allH3605 wentH5927 in search ofH1245 him; butH1732 David learnedH8085 of this and went downH3381 toH413 the strongholdH4686.
18Now the PhilistinesH6430 had comeH935 and spread outH5203 in the ValleyH6010 of RephaimH7497. 19So DavidH1732 inquiredH7592 of the LORDH3068, “Should I go upH5927 againstH413 the PhilistinesH6430? Will You deliver themH5414 into my handH3027?”
“Go upH5927,” repliedH559 the LORDH3068, “forH3588 I will surely deliverH5414 the PhilistinesH6430 into your handH3027.”
20So DavidH1732 wentH935 to Baal-perazimH1188, where he defeatedH5221H8033H1732 the Philistines and saidH559, “Like a burstingH6556 floodH4325, the LORDH3068 has burst outH6555 against my enemiesH341 before meH6440.” SoH5921H3651 he calledH7121H8034 thatH1931 placeH1188H4725 Baal-perazimH1188.4 21ThereH8033 the Philistines abandonedH5800 their idolsH6091, and DavidH1732 and his menH582 carried them awayH5375.
22Once againH3254H5750 the PhilistinesH6430 came upH5927 and spread outH5203 in the ValleyH6010 of RephaimH7497. 23So DavidH1732 inquiredH7592 of the LORDH3068, who answeredH559, “Do notH3808 march straight upH5927, but circleH5437 aroundH413 behind themH310 and attackH935 them in frontH4136 of the balsam treesH1057.5 24As soon asH1961 you hearH8085 the soundH6963 of marchingH6807 in the topsH7218 of the balsam treesH1057, move quicklyH2782, becauseH3588 this will mean thatH227 the LORDH3068 has gone outH3318 before youH6440 to strikeH5221 the campH4264 of the PhilistinesH6430.”
25So DavidH1732H3651 didH6213 asH834 the LORDH3068 had commanded himH6680, and he struck downH5221 the PhilistinesH6430 all the way from GibeonH13876 toH5704H935 GezerH1507.
