Joash Repairs the Temple

(2 Chronicles 24:1–14)

1In the seventhH7651 yearH8141 of JehuH3058, JoashH30601 became kingH4427, and he reignedH4427 in JerusalemH3389 fortyH705 yearsH8141. His mother’sH517 nameH8034 was ZibiahH6645; she was fromH884 BeershebaH884. 2And JoashH3060 didH6213 what was rightH3477 in the eyesH5869 of the LORDH3068 allH3605 the daysH3117 he was instructedH3384 by JehoiadaH3077 the priestH3548.

3NeverthelessH7535, the high placesH1116 were notH3808 removedH5493; the peopleH5971 continuedH5750 sacrificingH2076 and burning incenseH6999 there.

4Then JoashH3060 saidH559 toH413 the priestsH3548, “Collect allH3605 the moneyH3701 broughtH935 as sacred giftsH6944 into the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068—the censusH5674H376 moneyH3701, the moneyH3701 from vowsH5315H6187, and the moneyH3701 broughtH935 voluntarilyH5927H5921H3820H376 into the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068. 5Let everyH376H854 priestH3548 receiveH3947 it from his constituencyH4378, and let it be usedH1992 to repairH2388 any damageH3605H834H919 foundH4672 in the templeH1004H8033.”

6By the twenty-thirdH6242H7969H8141 yearH8141 of the reignH4428 of JoashH3060, howeverH1961, the priestsH3548 had not yetH3808 repairedH2388 the damageH919 to the templeH1004. 7So KingH4428 JoashH3060 calledH7121 JehoiadaH3077 and the other priestsH3548 and saidH559H413, “WhyH4069 have you notH369 repairedH2388 the damageH919 to the templeH1004? Now, thereforeH6258, takeH3947 no moreH408 moneyH3701 fromH854 your constituencyH4378, butH3588 hand it overH5414 for the repairH919 of the templeH1004.”

8So the priestsH3548 agreedH225 that they would notH1115 receiveH3947 moneyH3701 fromH854 the peopleH5971 and that they would notH1115 repairH2388 the temple themselvesH853H919H1004.

9Then JehoiadaH3077 the priestH3548 tookH3947 aH259 chestH727, boredH5344 a holeH2356 in its lidH1817, and setH5414 it besideH681 the altarH4196 on the right sideH3225 as oneH376 entersH935 the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068. ThereH8033 the priestsH3548 who guardedH8104 the thresholdH5592 putH5414 allH3605 the moneyH3701 broughtH935 into the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068.

10

Whenever they sawH7200 thatH3588 there was a large amountH7227 of moneyH3701 in the chestH727, the royalH4428 scribeH5608 and the highH1419 priestH3548 would go upH5927, countH4487 the moneyH3701 broughtH4672 into the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068, and tie it up in bagsH6696. 11Then they would putH5414 the countedH8505 moneyH3701 intoH5921 the handsH3027 of those whoH6213 supervisedH6485 the workH4399 on the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068, who in turn would payH3318 those doing the workH6213—the carpentersH2796H6086, buildersH1129, 12masonsH1443, and stonecuttersH2672H68. They also purchasedH7069 timberH6086 and dressedH4274 stoneH68 to repairH2388 the damageH919 to the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068, and they paidH3318 the other expensesH5921H3605 of the templeH1004 repairsH2388.

13HoweverH389, the moneyH3701 broughtH935 into the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068 was notH3808 used for makingH6213 silverH3701 basinsH5592, wick trimmersH4212, sprinkling bowlsH4219, trumpetsH2689, or anyH3605 articlesH3627 of goldH2091H3627 or silverH3701 for the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068. 14InsteadH3588, it was paidH5414 to those doingH6213 the workH4399, and with it they repairedH2388 the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068.

15NoH3808 accounting was requiredH2803H854 from the menH376 whoH834 received the moneyH3701H5921H3027H5414 to payH5414 the workmenH6213H4399, becauseH3588 theyH1992 actedH6213 with integrityH530. 16The moneyH3701 from the guilt offeringsH817H3701 and sin offeringsH2403 was notH3808 broughtH935 into the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068; it belonged toH1961 the priestsH3548.

The Death of Joash

(2 Chronicles 24:23–27)

17At that timeH227 HazaelH2371 kingH4428 of AramH758 marched upH5927 and foughtH3898 againstH5921 GathH1661 and captured itH3920. Then heH2371 decidedH7760H6440 to attackH5927H5921 JerusalemH3389. 18So KingH4428 JoashH3060 of JudahH3063 tookH3947 allH3605 the sacred objectsH6944 dedicatedH6942 by his fathersH1—JehoshaphatH3092, JehoramH3088, and AhaziahH274, the kingsH4428 of JudahH3063—along withH853 his own consecrated itemsH6944 and allH3605 the goldH2091 foundH4672 in the treasuriesH214 of the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068 and the royalH4428 palaceH1004, and he sent themH7971 to HazaelH2371 kingH4428 of AramH758. So Hazael withdrewH5927 fromH5921 JerusalemH3389.

19As for the restH3499 of the actsH1697 of JoashH3101, along with allH3605 his accomplishmentsH834H6213H3808H1992, are they not writtenH3789 inH5921 the BookH5612 of the ChroniclesH1697H3117 of the KingsH4428 of JudahH3063?

20And the servantsH5650 of Joash rose upH6965 and formedH7194 a conspiracyH7195 and killedH5221 him at Beth-milloH1037, on the road downH3381 to SillaH5538. 21His servantsH5650 JozabadH31072 sonH1121 of ShimeathH8100 and JehozabadH3075 sonH1121 of ShomerH77633 struck him downH5221, and he diedH4191. And they buriedH6912 himH853 withH5973 his fathersH1 in the CityH5892 of DavidH1732, and his sonH1121 AmaziahH558 reignedH4427 in his placeH8478.
