1 Samuel 17:5-38
5And he had a bronzeH5178 helmetH3553 on his headH7218, and he woreH3847 scale-armorH7193 1which weighedH4948 2fiveH2568 thousandH505 shekelsH8255 of bronzeH5178. 6He also had bronzeH5178 3greavesH4697 on his legsH7272 and a 4bronzeH5178 5saberH3591 slung betweenH996 his shouldersH3802. 76The shaftH2671 of his spearH2595 was like a weaver’sH707 beamH4500, and the headH3852 of his spearH2595 weighed 7sixH8337 hundredH3967 shekelsH8255 of ironH1270; and 8his shield-carrierH6793H5375 walkedH1980 in frontH6440 of him. 8He stoodH5975 and shoutedH7121 to the ranksH4634 of IsraelH3478 and saidH559 to them, “WhyH4100 do you comeH3318 outH3318 to drawH6186 upH6186 in battleH4421 formationH4421? Am I not the PhilistineH6430, and you the 9servantsH5650 of SaulH7586? ChooseH1262 a manH376 asH1262 your representativeH1262 and have him comeH3381 downH3381 to me. 910IfH518 he isH3201 ableH3201 to fightH3898 me and 11killH5221 me, then we will becomeH1961 your servantsH5650; but ifH518 I prevailH3201 against him and 12killH5221 him, then you shall becomeH1961 our servantsH5650 and serveH5647 us.” 10Then the PhilistineH6430 saidH559, “13I have defiedH2778 the ranksH4634 of IsraelH3478 thisH2088 dayH3117! GiveH5414 me a manH376, so that we may fightH3898 togetherH3162.” 11When SaulH7586 and allH3605 IsraelH3478 heardH8085 theseH428 wordsH1697 of the PhilistineH6430, they were dismayedH2865 and veryH3966 fearfulH3372.
12Now DavidH1732 was 14the sonH1121 of 15the 16EphrathiteH673 of BethlehemH1035 in JudahH3063, the man whose nameH8034 was JesseH3448, and 17he had eightH8083 sonsH1121. And 18Jesse wasH2204 oldH2204 in the daysH3117 of SaulH7586, advancedH935 in years among menH376. 13The threeH7969 olderH1419 sonsH1121 of JesseH3448 had 19followedH1980H310 SaulH7586 to the battleH4421. And 20the namesH8034 of his threeH7969 sonsH1121 whoH834 had goneH1980 into the battleH4421 were EliabH446 the firstbornH1060, and secondH4932 to him, AbinadabH41, and the thirdH7992, ShammahH8048. 14So 21DavidH1732 was the youngestH6996. Now the threeH7969 oldestH1419 followedH1980H310 SaulH7586, 1522but DavidH1732 wentH1980 backH7725 and forthH1980 from SaulH7586 23to tendH7462 his father’sH1 flockH6629 at BethlehemH1035. 16And the PhilistineH6430 cameH5066 forwardH5066 morningH7925 and eveningH6150, and tookH3320 his standH3320 for fortyH705 daysH3117.
17Then JesseH3448 saidH559 to his sonH1121 DavidH1732, “24TakeH3947 nowH4994 for your brothersH251 an ephahH374 of thisH2088 roastedH7039 grainH7039 and theseH2088 tenH6235 loavesH3899, and runH7323 to the campH4264 to your brothersH251. 1825BringH935 also theseH428 tenH6235 slicesH2757 of cheeseH2461 to the commanderH8269 of their thousandH505, 26and lookH6485 into the well-beingH7965 of your brothersH251 and bringH3947 back 27confirmationH6161 from them. 19For SaulH7586 and they and allH3605 the menH376 of IsraelH3478 are in the ValleyH6010 of ElahH424, fightingH3898 the PhilistinesH6430.”
20So DavidH1732 gotH7925 upH7925 earlyH7925 in the morningH1242 and leftH5203 the flockH6629 with a keeperH8104, and tookH5375 the supplies and wentH1980 as JesseH3448 had commandedH6680 him. And he cameH935 to the 28entrenchmentH4570 encirclingH4570 the campH4570 while the armyH2428 was goingH3318 outH3318 in battleH4634 formationH4634, shoutingH7321 theH7321 warH4421 cryH7321. 21IsraelH3478 and the PhilistinesH6430 drewH6186 upH6186 inH6186 battleH6186 formationH6186, armyH4634 againstH7122 armyH4634. 22Then DavidH1732 leftH5203 the 29baggageH3627 in the 30careH3027 of the baggageH3627 keeperH8104 and ranH7323 to the battleH4634 lineH4634. And he enteredH935 and 31greetedH7592H7965 his brothersH251. 23As he was speakingH1696 with them, beholdH2009, the championH376H996, the PhilistineH6430 from GathH1661 namedH8034 GoliathH1555, was comingH5927 upH5927 from the armyH4634 of the PhilistinesH6430, and he spokeH1696 32theseH428 same wordsH1697; and DavidH1732 heardH8085 him.
24When allH3605 the menH376 of IsraelH3478 sawH7200 the manH376, they fledH5127 from him and wereH3372 veryH3966 fearfulH3372. 25And the menH376 of IsraelH3478 saidH559, “Have you seenH7200 thisH2088 manH376 who is comingH5927 upH5927? SurelyH3588 he is comingH5927 upH5927 to defyH2778 IsraelH3478. And it will be that the kingH4428 will makeH6238 the manH376 whoH834 killsH5221 him wealthyH6238 with greatH1419 richesH6239, and 33will giveH5414 him his daughterH1323 and makeH6213 his father’sH1 houseH1004 34freeH2670 in IsraelH3478.”
26Then DavidH1732 saidH559 to the menH376 who were standingH5975 by him, “WhatH4100 will be doneH6213 for the manH376 whoH834 killsH5221 thisH1975 PhilistineH6430 and ridsH5493 IsraelH3478 of 35the disgraceH2781? For whoH4310 is thisH2088 36uncircumcisedH6189 PhilistineH6430, that he has dared to 37defyH2778 the armiesH4634 of 38the livingH2416 GodH430?” 27The peopleH5971 39answeredH559 him in agreement with thisH2088 statementH1697, sayingH559, “40ThisH3541 isH3541 whatH3541 will be doneH6213 for the manH376 whoH834 killsH5221 him.”
28Now EliabH446 his oldestH1419 brotherH251 heardH8085 him when he spokeH1696 to the menH376; and 41Eliab’sH446 angerH639 burnedH2734 against DavidH1732 and he saidH559, “WhyH4100 is it that you have comeH3381 downH3381? And with whomH4310 have you leftH5203 thoseH2007 fewH4592 sheepH6629 in the wildernessH4057? I myselfH589 knowH3045 your insolenceH2087 and the wickednessH7455 of your heartH3824; for you have comeH3381 downH3381 inH4616 orderH4616 toH4616 seeH7200 the battleH4421.” 29But DavidH1732 saidH559, “WhatH4100 have I doneH6213 nowH6258? Was it not just a 42questionH1697?” 30Then he turnedH5437 43awayH5437H681 from him to anotherH312 and 44saidH559 the sameH2088 thingH1697; and the peopleH5971 repliedH7725 with the same wordsH1697 as 45beforeH7223.
31When the wordsH1697 that DavidH1732 spokeH1696 were heardH8085, they informedH5046 46SaulH7586, and he 47sentH3947 for him. 32And DavidH1732 saidH559 to SaulH7586, “48May noH408 one’sH120 heartH3820 failH5307 onH5921 accountH5921 ofH5921 him; 49your servantH5650 will goH1980 and fightH3898 thisH2088 PhilistineH6430!” 33But SaulH7586 saidH559 to DavidH1732, “50You areH3201 not ableH3201 to goH1980 againstH413 thisH2088 PhilistineH6430 to fightH3898 him; for you are only a youthH5271, while he has been a warriorH4421 sinceH4480 his youthH5271.” 34But DavidH1732 saidH559 to SaulH7586, “Your servantH5650 was tendingH7462 his father’sH1 sheepH6629. When a lionH738 or a bearH1677 cameH935 and tookH5375 a sheepH7716 from the flockH5739, 35I wentH3318 outH3318 afterH310 it and 51attackedH5221 it, and 52rescuedH5337 the sheep from its mouthH6310; and when it roseH6965 upH6965 againstH5921 me, I grabbedH2388 it by its maneH2206 and struckH5221 it and killedH4191 it. 36Your servantH5650 has 53killedH5221 bothH1571 the lionH738 and the bearH1677; and thisH2088 uncircumcisedH6189 PhilistineH6430 will be like oneH259 of them, sinceH3588 he has defiedH2778 the armiesH4634 of the livingH2416 GodH430.” 37And DavidH1732 saidH559, “54The LordH3068 whoH834 savedH5337 me from the pawH3027 of the lionH738 and the pawH3027 of the bearH1677, He will saveH5337 me from the handH3027 of thisH2088 PhilistineH6430.” So SaulH7586 saidH559 to DavidH1732, “55GoH1980, and may the LordH3068 be with you.” 38Then SaulH7586 clothedH3847 DavidH1732 with his militaryH4055 attireH4055 and putH5414 a bronzeH5178 helmetH6959 on his headH7218, and outfittedH3847 him with armorH8302.
