1 Samuel 17:5-38
5He had a bronzeH5178 helmetH3553 on his headH7218, and he was clothedH3847 with scale-armorH7193 1which weighedH4948 fiveH2568 thousandH505 shekelsH8255 of bronzeH5178. 6He also had bronzeH5178 2greavesH4697 on his legsH7272 and a 3bronzeH5178 javelinH3591 slung betweenH996 his shouldersH3802. 74The shaftH2671 of his spearH2595 was like a weaver’sH707 beamH4500, and the headH3852 of his spearH2595 weighed sixH8337 hundredH3967 shekelsH8255 of ironH1270; 5his shield-carrierH6793H5375 also walkedH1980 beforeH6440 him. 8He stoodH5975 and shoutedH7121 to the ranksH4634 of IsraelH3478 and saidH559 to them, “WhyH4100 do you comeH3318 out to drawH6186 up in battleH4421 array? Am I not the PhilistineH6430 and you 6servantsH5650 of SaulH7586? ChooseH1262 a manH376 for yourselves and let him comeH3381 downH3381 to me. 97IfH518 he is ableH3201 to fightH3898 with me and 8killH5221 me, then we will becomeH1961 your servantsH5650; but ifH518 I prevailH3201 against him and 9killH5221 him, then you shall becomeH1961 our servantsH5650 and serveH5647 us.” 10Again the PhilistineH6430 saidH559, “10I defyH2778 the ranksH4634 of IsraelH3478 thisH2088 dayH3117; giveH5414 me a manH376 that we may fightH3898 togetherH3162.” 11When SaulH7586 and allH3605 IsraelH3478 heardH8085 theseH428 wordsH1697 of the PhilistineH6430, they were dismayedH2865 and greatlyH3966 afraidH3372.
12Now DavidH1732 was 11the sonH1121 of 12the 13EphrathiteH673 of BethlehemH1035 in JudahH3063, whose nameH8034 was JesseH3448, and 14he had eightH8083 sonsH1121. And 15Jesse was oldH2204 in the daysH3117 of SaulH7586, advancedH935 in years among menH376. 13The threeH7969 olderH1419 sonsH1121 of JesseH3448 had 16goneH1980 afterH310 SaulH7586 to the battleH4421. And 17the namesH8034 of his threeH7969 sonsH1121 whoH834 wentH1980 to the battleH4421 were EliabH446 the firstbornH1060, and the secondH4932 to him AbinadabH41, and the thirdH7992 ShammahH8048. 1418DavidH1732 was the youngestH6996. Now the threeH7969 oldestH1419 followedH1980H310 SaulH7586, 1519but DavidH1732 wentH1980H7725 backH7725 and forth from SaulH7586 20to tendH7462 his father’sH1 flockH6629 at BethlehemH1035. 16The PhilistineH6430 cameH5066 21forwardH5066 morningH7925 and eveningH6150 for fortyH705 daysH3117 and tookH3320 his standH3320.
17Then JesseH3448 saidH559 to DavidH1732 his sonH1121, “22TakeH3947 nowH4994 for your brothersH251 an ephahH374 of thisH2088 roastedH7039 grainH7039 and theseH2088 tenH6235 loavesH3899 and runH7323 to the campH4264 to your brothersH251. 1823BringH935 also theseH428 tenH6235 cutsH2757 of cheeseH2461 to the commanderH8269 of their thousandH505, 24and lookH6485 into the welfareH7965 of your brothersH251, and bringH3947 back 25newsH6161 of them. 19For SaulH7586 and they and allH3605 the menH376 of IsraelH3478 are in the valleyH6010 of ElahH424, fightingH3898 with the PhilistinesH6430.”
20So DavidH1732 aroseH7925 earlyH7925 in the morningH1242 and leftH5203 the flockH6629 with a keeperH8104 and tookH5375 the supplies and wentH1980 as JesseH3448 had commandedH6680 him. And he cameH935 to the 26circleH4570 of the campH4570 while the armyH2428 was goingH3318 out in battleH4634 arrayH4634 shoutingH7321 the warH4421 cryH7321. 21IsraelH3478 and the PhilistinesH6430 drewH6186 up in battleH6186 array, armyH4634 againstH7122 armyH4634. 22Then DavidH1732 leftH5203 his 27baggageH3627 in the 28careH3027 of the baggageH3627 keeperH8104, and ranH7323 to the battleH4634 lineH4634 and enteredH935 in order to greetH7592H7965 his brothersH251. 23As he was talkingH1696 with them, beholdH2009, the championH376H996, the PhilistineH6430 from GathH1661 namedH8034 GoliathH1555, was comingH5927 up from the armyH4634 of the PhilistinesH6430, and he spokeH1696 29theseH428 sameH428 wordsH1697; and DavidH1732 heardH8085 them.
24When allH3605 the menH376 of IsraelH3478 sawH7200 the manH376, they fledH5127 from him and were greatlyH3966 afraidH3372. 25The menH376 of IsraelH3478 saidH559, “Have you seenH7200 thisH2088 manH376 who is comingH5927 up? SurelyH3588 he is comingH5927 up to defyH2778 IsraelH3478. And it will be that the kingH4428 will enrichH6238 the manH376 whoH834 killsH5221 him with greatH1419 richesH6239 and 30will giveH5414 him his daughterH1323 and makeH6213 his father’sH1 houseH1004 31freeH2670 in IsraelH3478.”
26Then DavidH1732 spokeH559 to the menH376 who were standingH5975 by him, sayingH559, “WhatH4100 will be doneH6213 for the manH376 whoH834 killsH5221 thisH1975 PhilistineH6430 and takesH5493 awayH5493 32the reproachH2781 from IsraelH3478? For whoH4310 is thisH2088 33uncircumcisedH6189 PhilistineH6430, that he should 34tauntH2778 the armiesH4634 of 35the livingH2416 GodH430?” 27The peopleH5971 36answeredH559 him in accord with thisH2088 wordH1697, sayingH559, “37ThusH3541 it will be doneH6213 for the manH376 whoH834 killsH5221 him.”
28Now EliabH446 his oldestH1419 brotherH251 heardH8085 when he spokeH1696 to the menH376; and 38Eliab’sH446 angerH639 burnedH2734 against DavidH1732 and he saidH559, “WhyH4100 have you comeH3381 downH3381? And with whomH4310 have you leftH5203 thoseH2007 fewH4592 sheepH6629 in the wildernessH4057? I knowH3045 your insolenceH2087 and the wickednessH7455 of your heartH3824; for you have comeH3381 downH3381 in orderH4616 to seeH7200 the battleH4421.” 29But DavidH1732 saidH559, “WhatH4100 have I doneH6213 nowH6258? Was it not just a 39questionH1697?” 30Then he turnedH5437 40awayH5437H681 from him to anotherH312 and 41saidH559 the sameH2088 thingH1697; and the peopleH5971 answeredH7725 the sameH1697 thingH1697 as 42beforeH7223.
31When the wordsH1697 whichH834 DavidH1732 spokeH1696 were heardH8085, they toldH5046 them 43to SaulH7586, and he sentH3947 for him. 32DavidH1732 saidH559 to SaulH7586, “44Let noH408 man’sH120 heartH3820 failH5307 on accountH5921 of him; 45your servantH5650 will goH1980 and fightH3898 with thisH2088 PhilistineH6430.” 33Then SaulH7586 saidH559 to DavidH1732, “46You are not ableH3201 to goH1980 againstH413 thisH2088 PhilistineH6430 to fightH3898 with him; for you are but a youthH5271 while he has been a warriorH4421 from his youthH5271.” 34But DavidH1732 saidH559 to SaulH7586, “Your servantH5650 was tendingH7462 his father’sH1 sheepH6629. When a lionH738 or a bearH1677 cameH935 and tookH5375 a lambH7716 from the flockH5739, 35I wentH3318 out afterH310 him and 47attackedH5221 him, and 48rescuedH5337 it from his mouthH6310; and when he roseH6965 up againstH5921 me, I seizedH2388 him by his beardH2206 and 49struckH5221 him and killedH4191 him. 36Your servantH5650 has 50killedH5221 bothH1571 the lionH738 and the bearH1677; and thisH2088 uncircumcisedH6189 PhilistineH6430 will be like oneH259 of them, sinceH3588 he has tauntedH2778 the armiesH4634 of the livingH2416 GodH430.” 37And DavidH1732 saidH559, “51The LordH3068 whoH834 deliveredH5337 me from the pawH3027 of the lionH738 and from the pawH3027 of the bearH1677, He will deliverH5337 me from the handH3027 of thisH2088 PhilistineH6430.” And SaulH7586 saidH559 to DavidH1732, “52GoH1980, and may the LordH3068 be with you.” 38Then SaulH7586 clothedH3847 DavidH1732 with his garmentsH4055 and putH5414 a bronzeH5178 helmetH6959 on his headH7218, and he clothedH3847 him with armorH8302.
