1Now it happenedוַֽיְהִי֙vay.HiH1961afterwardאַֽחֲרֵי־ כֵ֔ן'a.cha.rei- KhenH310 H3651thatthe kingמֶ֖לֶךְMe.lekhH4428of the Ammonitesבְּנֵ֣י עַמּ֑וֹןbe.Nei a.MonH1121 H5983diedוַיָּ֕מָתvai.Ya.motH4191,and his sonבְּנ֖וֹbe.NoH1121Hanunחָנ֥וּןcha.NunH2586becameH4427kingH4427inH8478his placeתַּחְתָּֽיו׃tach.TavH8478.

2Then Davidדָּוִ֜דda.VidH1732saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “I will showאֶעֱשֶׂה־'e.'e.seh-H6213kindnessחֶ֣סֶד׀Che.sedH2617to Hanunחָנ֣וּןcha.NunH2586the sonבֶּן־ben-H1121ofNahashנָחָ֗שׁna.ChashH5176,justH3512asH3512his fatherאָבִ֤יו'a.VivH1showedעָשָׂ֨ה'a.SahH6213kindnessחֶ֔סֶדChe.sedH2617to me.” So Davidדָּוִ֧דda.VidH1732sentוַיִּשְׁלַ֨חvai.yish.LachH7971someבְּיַד־be.yad-H3027of his servantsעֲבָדָ֖יו'a.va.DavH5650to consoleלְנַחֲמ֛וֹle.na.cha.MoH5162him aboutאֶל־'el-H413his fatherאָבִ֑יו'a.VivH1.But when David’sדָוִ֔דda.VidH1732servantsעַבְדֵ֣י'av.DeiH5650cameוַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙vai.ya.Vo.'uH935to the landאֶ֖רֶץ'E.retzH776of the Ammonitesבְּנֵ֥י עַמּֽוֹן׃be.Nei a.MonH1121 H5983,

3the commandersשָׂרֵ֨יsa.ReiH8269of the Ammonitesבְנֵֽי־ עַמּ֜וֹןve.nei- a.MonH1121 H5983saidוַיֹּאמְרוּ֩vai.yo.me.RuH559to their lordאֲדֹֽנֵיהֶ֗ם'a.do.nei.HemH113Hanunחָנ֣וּןcha.NunH2586, “Do you thinkבְּעֵינֶ֔יךָbe.'ei.Nei.khaH5869that Davidדָּוִ֤דda.VidH1732is simplyhonoringהַֽמְכַבֵּ֨דham.kha.BedH3513your fatherאָבִ֙יךָ֙'a.Vi.khaH1sinceכִּֽי־ki-H3588he has sentשָׁלַ֥חsha.LachH7971you servantsto consoleמְנַֽחֲמִ֑יםme.na.cha.MimH5162you?Has Davidדָּוִ֛דda.VidH1732not sentשָׁלַ֥חsha.LachH7971his servantsעֲבָדָ֖יו'a.va.DavH5650to you in orderבַּעֲב֞וּרba.'a.VurH5668to exploreחֲק֤וֹרcha.KorH2713the cityהָעִיר֙ha.'IrH5892,to spyוּלְרַגְּלָ֣הּu.le.ra.ge.LahH7270it outH7270and overthrowוּלְהָפְכָ֔הּu.le.ha.fe.KhahH2015it?”

4So Hanunחָנ֜וּןcha.NunH2586tookוַיִּקַּ֨חvai.yi.KachH3947David’sדָוִ֗דda.VidH1732servantsעַבְדֵ֣י'av.DeiH5650andshavedH1548offH1548halfחֲצִ֣יcha.TziH2677of their beardsזְקָנָ֔םze.ka.NamH2206, andcutוַיִּכְרֹ֧תvai.yikh.RotH3772offH3772their robesמַדְוֵיהֶ֛םmad.vei.HemH4063in the middleבַּחֵ֖צִיba.Che.tziH2677as farעַ֣ד'adH5704as their buttocksH8351,and sentH7971them awayוַֽיְשַׁלְּחֵֽם׃Vay.sha.le.ChemH7971.

5When messengersinformedוַיַּגִּ֤דוּvai.ya.Gi.duH5046Davidלְדָוִד֙le.da.VidH1732,he sentוַיִּשְׁלַ֣חvai.yish.LachH7971servantsto meetלִקְרָאתָ֔םlik.ra.TamH7122them, becauseכִּֽי־ki-H3588the menH376were extremelyמְאֹ֑דme.'OdH3966humiliatedנִכְלָמִ֣יםnikh.la.MimH3637.And the kingהַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ha.Me.lekhH4428saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Stayשְׁב֣וּshe.VuH3427in Jerichoבִֽירֵח֔וֹvi.re.ChoH3405untilעַד־'ad-H5704your beardsזְקַנְכֶ֖םze.kan.KhemH2206growיְצַמַּ֥חye.tza.MachH6779back, and thenyou shall returnוְשַׁבְתֶּֽם׃ve.shav.TemH7725.”
