6Now it happenedH1961that while there was warהַמִּלְחָמָ֔הha.mil.cha.MahH4421betweenH996the houseבֵּ֣יתbeitH1004of Saulשָׁא֔וּלsha.'UlH7586and the houseבֵּ֣יתbeitH1004of Davidדָּוִ֑דda.VidH1732,Abnerוְאַבְנֵ֛רve.'av.NerH74wasstrengtheningמִתְחַזֵּ֖קmit.cha.ZekH2388himself in the houseבְּבֵ֥יתbe.VeitH1004of Saulשָׁאֽוּל׃sha.'UlH7586.

7And Saulוּלְשָׁא֣וּלu.le.sha.'UlH7586had a concubineפִּלֶ֔גֶשׁpi.Le.geshH6370whose nameוּשְׁמָ֖הּu.she.MahH8034wasRizpahרִצְפָּ֣הritz.PahH7532,the daughterבַת־vat-H1323of Aiahאַיָּ֑ה'ai.YahH345; andIsh-bosheth saidוַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙vai.Yo.merH559to Abnerאַבְנֵ֔ר'av.NerH74, “Whyמַדּ֥וּעַma.Du.a'H4069have you goneH935inH935to my father’sאָבִֽי׃'a.ViH1concubineפִּילֶ֥גֶשׁpi.Le.geshH6370?”

10to transferלְהַֽעֲבִ֥ירle.ha.'a.VirH5674the kingdomהַמַּמְלָכָ֖הha.mam.la.KhahH4467from the houseמִבֵּ֣יתmi.BeitH1004of Saulשָׁא֑וּלsha.'UlH7586,and to establishוּלְהָקִ֞יםu.le.ha.KimH6965the throneכִּסֵּ֣אki.Se'H3678of Davidדָוִ֗דda.VidH1732overעַל־'al-H5921Israelיִשְׂרָאֵל֙Yis.ra.'ElH3478and overוְעַל־ve.'al-H5921Judahיְהוּדָ֔הye.hu.DahH3063,from Danמִדָּ֖ןmi.DanH1835even to BeershebaH884!”

11And Ish-boshethcouldיָכֹ֣לya.KholH3201noוְלֹֽא־ve.lo'-H3808longerע֔וֹדodH5750sayH7725a wordדָּבָ֑רda.VarH1697inH7725responseH7725to Abnerאַבְנֵ֖ר'av.NerH74,becauseH4480he wasH3372afraidH3372of him.

13And he saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Goodט֔וֹבTovH2896!I will makeאֶכְרֹ֥ת'ekh.RotH3772a covenantבְּרִ֑יתbe.RitH1285with you, onlyאַ֣ךְ'akhH389I requireשֹׁאֵ֨לsho.'ElH7592oneאֶחָ֡ד'e.ChadH259thingדָּבָ֣רda.VarH1697of you,namelyלֵאמֹר֙le.MorH559, thatyou shall not seeתִרְאֶ֣הtir.'EhH7200my faceH6440unlessכִּ֣י׀ אִם־ki 'im-H3588 H518youfirstH6440bringהֱבִיאֲךָ֗he.vi.'a.KhaH935Michalמִיכַ֣לmi.KhalH4324,Saul’sשָׁא֔וּלsha.'UlH7586daughterבַּת־bat-H1323,when you comeבְּבֹאֲךָ֖be.vo.'a.KhaH935to seeלִרְא֥וֹתlir.'otH7200me.”

14So Davidדָּוִד֙da.VidH1732sentוַיִּשְׁלַ֤חvai.yish.LachH7971messengersמַלְאָכִ֔יםmal.'a.KhimH4397to Ish-boshethH378,Saul’sשָׁא֖וּלsha.'UlH7586sonבֶּן־ben-H1121,sayingלֵאמֹ֑רle.MorH559, “Giveתְּנָ֤הte.NahH5414me my wifeאִשְׁתִּי֙'ish.TiH802Michalמִיכַ֔לmi.KhalH4324,to whomאֲשֶׁר֙'a.SherH834I was betrothedאֵרַ֣שְׂתִּי'e.Ras.tiH781for a hundredבְּמֵאָ֖הbe.me.'AhH3967foreskinsעָרְל֥וֹתa.re.LotH6190of the Philistinesפְּלִשְׁתִּֽים׃pe.lish.TimH6430.”

15Ish-boshethH378sentוַיִּשְׁלַח֙vai.yish.LachH7971men andhad her takenוַיִּקָּחֶ֖הָvai.yi.ka.Che.haH3947from herhusbandאִ֑ישׁ'IshH376, fromPaltielפַּלְטִיאֵ֥לpal.ti.'ElH6409the sonבֶּן־ben-H1121of Laishלָֽיִשׁ׃lushH3919.

16And her husbandאִישָׁ֗הּ'i.ShahH376wentוַיֵּ֨לֶךְvai.Ye.lekhH1980with her, weepingוּבָכֹ֛הu.va.KhohH1058as he wentהָל֧וֹךְha.LokhH1980,followingאַחֲרֶ֖יהָ'a.cha.Rei.haH310her as farעַד־'ad-H5704asBahurimבַּֽחֻרִ֑יםba.chu.RimH980.Then Abnerאַבְנֵ֛ר'av.NerH74saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to him, “Goלֵ֥ךְlekhH1980,returnשׁ֖וּבshuvH7725.”So he returnedוַיָּשֹֽׁב׃vai.ya.ShoH7725.

17Now Abnerאַבְנֵ֣ר'av.NerH74hadH1961aconsultationוּדְבַר־u.de.var-H1697withthe eldersזִקְנֵ֥יzik.NeiH2205of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖לYis.ra.'ElH3478,sayingלֵאמֹ֑רle.MorH559, “In timesH1571 H8032 H8543pastH8543 H8032you were seekingמְבַקְשִׁ֧יםme.vak.ShimH1245for Davidדָּוִ֛דda.VidH1732to be kingלְמֶ֖לֶךְle.Me.lekhH4428overעֲלֵיכֶֽם׃'a.lei.KhemH5921you.

18Nowוְעַתָּ֖הve.'a.TahH6258then, doעֲשׂ֑וּ'a.SuH6213it!For the Lordיְהוָ֗הYah.wehH3068has spokenאָמַ֤ר'a.MarH559regardingאֶל־'el-H413Davidדָּוִד֙da.VidH1732,sayingלֵאמֹ֔רle.MorH559, ‘By the handבְּיַ֣ד׀be.YadH3027of My servantעַבְדִּ֗י'av.DiH5650Davidדָּוִ֣דda.VidH1732I will saveהוֹשִׁ֜יעַho.Shi.a'H3467My peopleעַמִּ֤י'a.MiH5971Israelיִשְׂרָאֵל֙Yis.ra.'ElH3478from the handמִיַּ֣דmi.YadH3027of the Philistinesפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔יםpe.lish.TimH6430,and from the handsוּמִיַּ֖דu.mi.YadH3027of allכָּל־kol-H3605their enemiesH340.’”

19Abnerאַבְנֵ֖ר'av.NerH74alsoH1571spokeוַיְדַבֵּ֥רvay.da.BerH1696to Benjaminבִנְיָמִ֑יןvin.ya.MinH1144;and inH1571additionH1571Abnerאַבְנֵ֗ר'av.NerH74wentוַיֵּ֣לֶךְvai.Ye.lekhH1980to speakלְדַבֵּ֞רle.da.BerH1696to Davidדָוִד֙da.VidH1732in Hebronבְּחֶבְר֔וֹןbe.chev.RonH2275everythingכָּל־kol-H3605that seemedH5869goodטוֹב֙tOvH2895to Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לYis.ra.'ElH3478and tothe entireכָּל־kol-H3605houseבֵּ֥יתbeitH1004of Benjaminבִּנְיָמִֽן׃bin.ya.MinH1144.

20Then Abnerאַבְנֵ֤ר'av.NerH74and twentyעֶשְׂרִ֣ים'es.RimH6242menH376with him cameוַיָּבֹ֨אvai.ya.Vo'H935to Davidדָּוִד֙da.VidH1732at Hebronחֶבְר֔וֹןchev.RonH2275.And Davidדָּוִ֧דda.VidH1732heldוַיַּ֨עַשׂvai.Ya.'asH6213a feastמִשְׁתֶּֽה׃mish.TehH4960for Abnerלְאַבְנֵ֛רle.'av.NerH74and the menH376whoאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834were with him.

21Abnerאַבְנֵ֣ר'av.NerH74saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Davidדָּוִ֡דda.VidH1732, “Let me setH6965outH6965and goוְֽאֵלֵ֡כָהve.'e.Le.khahH1980andgatherוְאֶקְבְּצָה֩ve.'ek.be.TzahH6908allכָּל־kol-H3605Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֗לYis.ra.'ElH3478to my lordאֲדֹנִ֨י'a.do.NiH113the kingהַמֶּ֜לֶךְha.Me.lekhH4428,so that they may makeוְיִכְרְת֤וּve.yikh.re.TuH3772a covenantבְּרִ֔יתbe.RitH1285with you, and thatyou may beH4427kingH4427over allבְּכֹ֥לbe.KholH3605that your soulנַפְשֶׁ֑ךָnaf.She.khaH5315desiresתְּאַוֶּ֖הte.'a.VehH183.”So Davidדָּוִ֛דda.VidH1732letH7971Abnerאַבְנֵ֖ר'av.NerH74goH7971,and he wentוַיֵּ֥לֶךְvai.Ye.lekhH1980in peaceבְּשָׁלֽוֹם׃be.sha.LomH7965.

22And beholdוְהִנֵּה֩ve.hi.NehH2009,the servantsעַבְדֵ֨י'av.DeiH5650of Davidדָוִ֤דda.VidH1732and Joabוְיוֹאָב֙ve.yo.'AvH3097cameבָּ֣אba'H935from a raidמֵֽהַגְּד֔וּדme.ha.ge.DudH1416and broughtהֵבִ֑יאוּhe.Vi.'uH935a largeH7227amountH7227of plunderוְשָׁלָ֥לve.sha.LalH7998with them; but Abnerוְאַבְנֵ֗רve.'av.NerH74was not with Davidדָּוִד֙da.VidH1732in Hebronבְּחֶבְר֔וֹןbe.chev.RonH2275,sinceכִּ֥יkiH3588he had letH7971him goH7971,and he had goneוַיֵּ֥לֶךְvai.Ye.lekhH1980in peaceבְּשָׁלֽוֹם׃be.sha.LomH7965.

23When Joabוְיוֹאָ֛בve.yo.'AvH3097and allוְכָל־ve.kholH3605the armyהַצָּבָ֥אha.tza.Va'H6635that was with him arrivedבָּ֑אוּBa.'uH935,they informedוַיַּגִּ֤דוּvai.ya.Gi.duH5046Joabלְיוֹאָב֙le.yo.'AvH3097,sayingלֵאמֹ֔רle.MorH559, “Abnerאַבְנֵ֤ר'av.NerH74the sonבֶּן־ben-H1121of Nerנֵר֙nerH5369cameבָּֽא־ba'-H935to the kingהַמֶּ֔לֶךְha.Me.lekhH4428,and he has letH7971him goH7971on his way,and he has goneוַיֵּ֥לֶךְvai.Ye.lekhH1980in peaceבְּשָׁלֽוֹם׃be.sha.LomH7965.”

24Then Joabיוֹאָב֙yo.'AvH3097cameוַיָּבֹ֤אvai.ya.Vo'H935to the kingהַמֶּ֔לֶךְha.Me.lekhH4428and saidוַיֹּ֖אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Whatמֶ֣הmehH4100have you doneעָשִׂ֑יתָה'a.Si.tahH6213?Beholdהִנֵּה־hi.neh-H2009,Abnerאַבְנֵר֙'av.NerH74cameבָ֤אva'H935to you; whyלָמָּה־la.mah-H4100thenזֶּ֥הzehH2088have you letH7971him goH7971,so that he is alreadyוַיֵּ֥לֶךְvai.Ye.lekhH1980goneהָלֽוֹךְ׃ha.LokhH1980?

25You knowH3045Abnerאַבְנֵ֣ר'av.NerH74the sonבֶּן־ben-H1121of Nerנֵ֔רNerH5369,that he cameבָּ֑אBa'H935to gainH6601your confidenceH6601,and to learnH3045of yourgoingמוֹצָֽאֲךָ֙mo.tza.'a.KhaH4161out and comingH4126inH4126and to findH3045outH3045everythingכָּל־kol-H3605that you are doingעֹשֶֽׂה׃'o.SehH6213.”

Joab Murders Abner

26When Joabיוֹאָב֙yo.'AvH3097leftוַיֵּצֵ֤אvai.ye.Tze'H3318David’sדָּוִ֔דda.VidH1732presenceמֵעִ֣םme.'ImH5973,he sentוַיִּשְׁלַ֤חvai.yish.LachH7971messengersמַלְאָכִים֙mal.'a.KhimH4397afterאַחֲרֵ֣י'a.cha.ReiH310Abnerאַבְנֵ֔ר'av.NerH74,and they broughtH7725him backוַיָּשִׁ֥בוּvai.ya.Shi.vuH7725from the wellמִבּ֣וֹרmi.BorH953of Sirahהַסִּרָ֑הha.si.RahH5626;but Davidוְדָוִ֖דve.da.VidH1732did not knowיָדָֽע׃ya.Da'H3045about it.

27So when Abnerאַבְנֵר֙'av.NerH74returnedוַיָּ֤שָׁבvai.Ya.shovH7725to Hebronחֶבְר֔וֹןchev.RonH2275,Joabיוֹאָב֙yo.'AvH3097tookH5186him asideוַיַּטֵּ֤הוּvai.ya.Te.huH5186into the middleתּ֣וֹךְTokhH8432of the gateהַשַּׁ֔עַרha.Sha.'arH8179to speakלְדַבֵּ֥רle.da.BerH1696with him privatelyבַּשֶּׁ֑לִיba.She.liH7987,and thereשָׁם֙shamH8033he struckוַיַּכֵּ֤הוּvai.ya.Ke.huH5221him in the bellyהַחֹ֔מֶשׁha.Cho.meshH2570,so that he diedוַיָּ֕מָתvai.Ya.motH4191on account of the bloodבְּדַ֖םbe.DamH1818of his brotherאָחִֽיו׃'a.ChivH251AsahelH6214.

28Afterwardמֵאַ֣חֲרֵיme.'A.cha.reiH310,when Davidדָּוִד֙da.VidH1732heardוַיִּשְׁמַ֤עvai.yish.Ma'H8085aboutthis, he saidוַיֹּ֗אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “I and my kingdomוּמַמְלַכְתִּ֛יu.mam.lakh.TiH4467are innocentנָקִ֨יna.KiH5355beforeמֵעִ֥םme.'ImH4480 H5973the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068foreverעַד־ עוֹלָ֑ם'ad- o.LamH5704 H5769of the bloodמִדְּמֵ֖יmi.de.MeiH1818of Abnerאַבְנֵ֥ר'av.NerH74the sonבֶּן־ben-H1121of Nerנֵֽר׃NerH5369.

29May it turnיָחֻ֙לוּ֙ya.Chu.luH2342upon the headרֹ֣אשׁroshH7218of Joabיוֹאָ֔בyo.'AvH3097and on allכָּל־kol-H3605his father’sאָבִ֑יו'a.VivH1houseבֵּ֣יתbeitH1004;and may there not be eliminatedיִכָּרֵ֣תyi.ka.RetH3772from the houseמִבֵּ֣יתmi.BeitH1004of Joabיוֹאָ֡בyo.'AvH3097someone who suffersH2100a dischargeזָ֠בzavH2100,or has leprosyוּמְצֹרָ֞עu.me.tzo.Ra'H6879, orholdsוּמַחֲזִ֥יקu.ma.cha.ZikH2388the spindleבַּפֶּ֛לֶךְba.Pe.lekhH6418,or fallsוְנֹפֵ֥לve.no.FelH5307by the swordבַּחֶ֖רֶבba.Che.revH2719,or lacksוַחֲסַר־va.cha.sar-H2638breadלָֽחֶם׃La.chemH3899.”

30So Joabוְיוֹאָב֙ve.yo.'AvH3097and his brotherאָחִ֔יו'a.ChivH251Abishaiוַאֲבִישַׁ֣יva.'a.vi.ShaiH52killedהָרְג֖וּha.re.GuH2026Abnerלְאַבְנֵ֑רle.'av.NerH74becauseעַל֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר'al 'a.SherH5921 H834he had putH4191their brotherאֲחִיהֶ֛ם'a.chi.HemH251Asahelעֲשָׂהאֵ֧ל'a.sa.h.'ElH6214toH4191deathH4191in the battleבַּמִּלְחָמָֽה׃ פba.mil.cha.MahH4421at Gibeonבְּגִבְע֖וֹןbe.giv.'onH1391.

31Then Davidדָּוִ֨דda.VidH1732saidוַיֹּאמֶר֩vai.yo.MerH559to Joabיוֹאָ֜בyo.'AvH3097and to allכָּל־kol-H3605the peopleהָעָ֣םha.'AmH5971whoאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834were with him, “Tearקִרְע֤וּkir.'UH7167your clothesבִגְדֵיכֶם֙vig.dei.KhemH899and putH2296onH2296sackclothשַׂקִּ֔יםsa.KimH8242,and mournוְסִפְד֖וּve.sif.DuH5594beforeלִפְנֵ֣יlif.NeiH6440Abnerאַבְנֵ֑ר'av.NerH74.”And Kingוְהַמֶּ֣לֶךְve.ha.Me.lekhH4428Davidדָּוִ֔דda.VidH1732walkedהֹלֵ֖ךְho.LekhH1980behindאַחֲרֵ֥י'a.cha.ReiH310the bierהַמִּטָּֽה׃ha.mi.TahH4296.
