2So the kingהַמֶּ֜לֶךְha.Me.lekhH4428saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Joabיוֹאָ֣ב׀yo.'AvH3097the commanderשַׂר־sar-H8269of the armyהַחַ֣יִלha.Cha.yilH2428,whoאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834was with him, “RoamH7751aboutH7751nowנָ֞אna'H4994through allבְּכָל־be.kholH3605the tribesשִׁבְטֵ֤יshiv.TeiH7626of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵל֙Yis.ra.'ElH3478,from Danמִדָּן֙mi.DanH1835to BeershebaH884,and conductH6485aH6485censusH6485of the peopleהָעָ֑םha.'AmH5971,so that I may knowוְיָ֣דַעְתִּ֔יve.Ya.da'.TiH3045the numberמִסְפַּ֥רmis.ParH4557of the peopleהָעָֽם׃ סha.'AmH5971.”
3But Joabיוֹאָ֜בyo.'AvH3097saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to the kingהַמֶּ֗לֶךְha.Me.lekhH4428, “May the Lordיְהוָה֩Yah.wehH3068your Godאֱלֹהֶ֨יךָ'e.lo.Hei.khaH430addוְיוֹסֵ֣ףve.yo.SefH3254to the peopleהָעָ֜םha.'AmH5971a hundredמֵאָ֣הme.'AhH3967timesפְעָמִ֔יםfe.'a.MimH6471as many as they are, while the eyesוְעֵינֵ֥יve.'ei.NeiH5869of my lordאֲדֹנִֽי־'a.do.ni-H113the kingהַמֶּ֖לֶךְha.Me.lekhH4428can stillseeרֹא֑וֹתro.'otH7200;but whyלָ֥מָּהLa.mahH4100does my lordוַאדֹנִ֣יva.do.NiH113the kingהַמֶּ֔לֶךְha.Me.lekhH4428delightחָפֵ֖ץcha.FetzH2654in thisהַזֶּֽה׃ha.ZehH2088thingבַּדָּבָ֥רba.da.VarH1697?”
4Nevertheless, the king’sהַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ha.Me.lekhH4428orderדְּבַר־de.var-H1697prevailedוַיֶּחֱזַ֤קvai.ye.che.ZakH2388againstאֶל־'el-H413Joabיוֹאָ֔בyo.'AvH3097and againstוְעַ֖לve.'AlH5921the commandersשָׂרֵ֣יsa.ReiH8269of the armyהֶחָ֑יִלhe.Cha.yilH2428.So Joabיוֹאָ֜בyo.'AvH3097and the commandersוְשָׂרֵ֤יve.sa.ReiH8269of the armyהַחַ֙יִל֙ha.Cha.yilH2428leftוַיֵּצֵ֨אvai.ye.Tze'H3318the presenceלִפְנֵ֣יlif.NeiH6440of the kingהַמֶּ֔לֶךְha.Me.lekhH4428to conductH6485aH6485censusH6485of the peopleהָעָ֖םha.'AmH5971of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃Yis.ra.'ElH3478.
5They crossedוַיַּעַבְר֖וּvai.ya.'av.RuH5674the Jordanהַיַּרְדֵּ֑ןhai.yar.DenH3383and campedוַיַּחֲנ֣וּvai.ya.cha.NuH2583inAroerבַעֲרוֹעֵ֗רva.'a.ro.'ErH6177,on the rightH3225sideH3225of the cityהָעִ֛ירha.'IrH5892that is in the middleבְּתוֹךְ־be.tokh-H8432of the Valleyהַנַּ֥חַלha.Na.chalH5158of Gadהַגָּ֖דha.GadH1410and towardוְאֶל־ve.'el-H413Jazerיַעְזֵֽר׃ya'.ZerH3270.
7then they cameוַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙vai.ya.Vo.'uH935to thefortressמִבְצַר־miv.tzar-H4013of Tyreצֹ֔רTzorH6865and to allוְכָל־ve.kholH3605the citiesעָרֵ֥י'a.ReiH5892of theHivitesהַחִוִּ֖יha.chi.ViH2340and of the Canaanitesוְהַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֑יve.ha.ke.na.'a.NiH3669,and they wentH3318outH3318to the southנֶ֥גֶבNe.gevH5045of Judahיְהוּדָ֖הye.hu.DahH3063, toBeershebaH884.
8So when they had roamedH7751aboutH7751through the wholeבְּכָל־be.kholH3605landהָאָ֑רֶץha.'A.retzH776,they cameוַיָּבֹ֜אוּvai.ya.Vo.'uH935to Jerusalemיְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ye.ru.sha.LimH3389at the endמִקְצֵ֨הmik.TzehH7097of nineתִשְׁעָ֧הtish.'AhH8672monthsחֳדָשִׁ֛יםcho.da.ShimH2320and twentyוְעֶשְׂרִ֥יםve.'es.RimH6242daysי֖וֹםYomH3117.

10NowDavid’sדָּוִד֙da.VidH1732heartלֵב־lev-H3820troubledוַיַּ֤ךְvai.YakhH5221him afterאַחֲרֵי־ כֵ֖ן'a.cha.rei- khenH310H3651he had countedסָפַ֣רsa.FarH5608the peopleהָעָ֑ם סha.'AmH5971.So Davidדָּוִ֜דda.VidH1732saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to the Lordיְהוָ֗הYah.wehH3068, “I have sinnedחָטָ֤אתִיcha.Ta.tiH2398greatlyמְאֹד֙me.'OdH3966in whatאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834I have doneעָשִׂ֔יתִי'a.Si.tiH6213.But nowוְעַתָּ֣הve.'a.TahH6258, Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068,pleaseנָא֙na'H4994overlookהַֽעֲבֶר־ha.'a.ver-H5674the guiltעֲוֹ֣ן'a.VonH5771of Your servantעַבְדְּךָ֔'av.de.KhaH5650, forI have actedH5528veryמְאֹֽד׃me.'OdH3966foolishlyנִסְכַּ֖לְתִּיnis.Kal.tiH5528.”
12“Goהָל֞וֹךְha.LokhH1980and speakוְדִבַּרְתָּ֣ve.di.bar.TaH1696to Davidדָּוִ֗דda.VidH1732, ‘ThisH3541isH3541whatH3541the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068saysאָמַ֣ר'a.MarH559: “I am imposingנוֹטֵ֣לno.TelH5190upon you threeשָׁלֹ֕שׁsha.LoshH7969choices;chooseבְּחַר־be.char-H977for yourself oneאַֽחַת־'a.chat-H259of them, and I will doוְאֶֽעֱשֶׂה־ve.'e.'e.seh-H6213it to you.”’”
13So Gadגָ֥דgadH1410cameוַיָּבֹא־vai.ya.vo'-H935to Davidדָּוִ֖דda.VidH1732and toldוַיַּגֶּד־vai.ya.ged-H5046him, and saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to him, “ShallsevenשֶֽׁבַעShe.va'H7651yearsשָׁנִ֣ים׀sha.NimH8141of famineרָעָ֣ב׀ra.'AvH7458comeהֲתָב֣וֹאha.ta.Vo'H935to you in your landבְּאַרְצֶ֡ךָbe.'ar.Tze.khaH776?OrH518will you fleeנֻסְךָ֨nus.KhaH5127for threeשְׁלֹשָׁ֣הshe.lo.ShahH7969monthsחֳ֠דָשִׁיםCho.da.shimH2320beforeלִפְנֵֽי־lif.nei-H6440your enemiesצָרֶ֜יךָtza.Rei.khaH6862while they pursueרֹדְפֶ֗ךָro.de.Fe.khaH7291you? 14Then Davidדָּוִ֛דda.VidH1732saidוַיֹּ֧אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Gadגָּ֖דgadH1410, “I am in greatמְאֹ֑דme.'OdH3966distressH6887.Let us nowנָּ֤אna'H4994fallנִפְּלָה־ni.pe.lah-H5307into the handבְיַד־ve.yad-H3027of the Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068,for His merciesרַֽחֲמָ֔יוra.cha.moH7356are greatרַבִּ֣יםra.BimH7227;but do not let me fallאֶפֹּֽלָה׃'e.Po.lahH5307into humanאָדָ֖ם'a.DamH120handsוּבְיַד־u.ve.yad-H3027.”

15Sothe Lordיְהוָ֥הYah.wehH3068sentוַיִּתֵּ֨ןvai.yi.TenH5414a plagueדֶּ֙בֶר֙de.verH1698upon Israelבְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לbe.Yis.ra.'ElH3478from the morningמֵהַבֹּ֖קֶרme.ha.Bo.kerH1242untilH5704the appointedמוֹעֵ֑דmo.'EdH4150timeעֵ֣ת'etH6256,and seventyשִׁבְעִ֥יםshiv.'ImH7657thousandאֶ֖לֶף'E.lefH505menאִֽישׁ׃'IshH376of the peopleהָעָ֗םha.'AmH5971from Danמִדָּן֙mi.DanH1835to BeershebaH884diedוַיָּ֣מָתvai.Ya.motH4191.
16When the angelהַמַּלְאָ֥ךְ׀ha.mal.'AkhH4397extendedוַיִּשְׁלַח֩vai.yish.LachH7971his handיָד֨וֹya.DoH3027towardJerusalemיְרֽוּשָׁלִַם֮ye.ru.sha.LimH3389to destroyלְשַׁחֲתָהּ֒le.sha.cha.TahH7843it,the Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068relentedוַיִּנָּ֤חֶםvai.yi.Na.chemH5162of the disasterH7463and saidוַ֠יֹּאמֶרVai.yo.merH559to the angelלַמַּלְאָ֞ךְla.mal.'AkhH4397who destroyedהַמַּשְׁחִ֤יתha.mash.ChitH7843the peopleבָּעָם֙ba.'AmH5971, “It is enoughרַ֔בRavH7227!Nowעַתָּ֖ה'a.TahH6258dropהֶ֣רֶףHe.refH7503your handיָדֶ֑ךָya.De.khaH3027!”And the angelוּמַלְאַ֤ךְu.mal.'AkhH4397of the Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068was by the threshingגֹּ֖רֶןGo.renH1637floorH1637of Araunahהָאֲרַ֥וְנָהha.'Or.nahH728the Jebusiteהַיְבֻסִֽי׃ סhay.vu.SiH2983.
17Then Davidדָּוִ֨דda.VidH1732spokeוַיֹּאמֶר֩vai.yo.MerH559to the Lordיְהוָ֜הYah.wehH3068when he sawבִּרְאֹת֣וֹ׀bir.'o.ToH7200the angelהַמַּלְאָ֣ךְ׀ha.mal.'AkhH4397who was strikingH5221downH5221the peopleבָעָ֗םva.'AmH5971,and saidוַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙vai.Yo.merH559, “Beholdהִנֵּ֨הhi.NehH2009,it is I who have sinnedחָטָ֙אתִי֙cha.Ta.tiH2398,and it is I who have doneH5753wrongהֶעֱוֵ֔יתִיhe.'e.Vei.tiH5753; buttheseוְאֵ֥לֶּהve.'E.lehH428sheepהַצֹּ֖אןha.TzonH6629,whatמֶ֣הmehH4100have they doneעָשׂ֑וּ'a.SuH6213?Pleaseנָ֥אna'H4994let Your handיָדְךָ֛ya.de.KhaH3027be against me and against my father’sאָבִֽי׃ פ'a.ViH1houseוּבְבֵ֥יתu.ve.VeitH1004!”
David Builds an Altar
18So Gadגָ֥דgadH1410cameוַיָּבֹא־vai.ya.vo'-H935to Davidדָּוִ֖דda.VidH1732that dayבַּיּ֣וֹםbai.YomH3117and saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to him, “Goעֲלֵה֙'a.LehH5927upH5927,erectהָקֵ֤םha.KemH6965an altarמִזְבֵּ֔חַmiz.Be.achH4196to the Lordלַֽיהוָה֙la.Yah.wehH3068on the threshingבְּגֹ֖רֶןbe.Go.renH1637floorH1637ofAraunahאֲרַ֥וְנָה'a.ra.ne.yahH728the Jebusiteהַיְבֻסִֽי׃hay.vu.SiH2983.”
20And Araunahאֲרַ֗וְנָה'a.Rav.nahH728lookedH8259downוַיַּשְׁקֵ֣ףvai.yash.KefH8259and sawוַיַּ֤רְאvai.Yar'H7200the kingהַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ha.Me.lekhH4428and his servantsעֲבָדָ֔יו'a.va.DavH5650crossingH5674overH5674towardעָלָ֑יו'a.LavH5921him; so Araunahאֲרַ֔וְנָה'a.Rav.nahH728wentH3318outH3318and bowedH2331his faceאַפָּ֖יו'a.PavH639to the groundאָֽרְצָה׃'A.re.tzahH776before the kingלַמֶּ֛לֶךְla.Me.lekhH4428.
21Then Araunahאֲרַ֔וְנָה'a.Rav.nahH728saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Whyמַדּ֛וּעַma.Du.a'H4069has my lordאֲדֹנִֽי־'a.do.ni-H113the kingהַמֶּ֖לֶךְha.Me.lekhH4428comeבָּ֥אba'H935to his servantעַבְדּ֑וֹav.DoH5650?”And Davidדָּוִ֜דda.VidH1732saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “To buyלִקְנ֧וֹתlik.NotH7069the threshingהַגֹּ֗רֶןha.Go.renH1637floorH1637from you, in order to buildלִבְנ֤וֹתliv.NotH1129an altarמִזְבֵּ֙חַ֙miz.Be.achH4196to the Lordלַֽיהוָ֔הla.Yah.wehH3068,so that the plagueהַמַּגֵּפָ֖הha.ma.ge.FahH4046may bewithdrawnוְתֵעָצַ֥רve.te.'a.TzarH6113from the peopleהָעָֽם׃ha.'AmH5971.”
22Araunahאֲרַ֙וְנָה֙'a.Rav.nahH728then saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Davidדָּוִ֔דda.VidH1732, “Let my lordאֲדֹנִ֥י'a.do.NiH113the kingהַמֶּ֖לֶךְha.Me.lekhH4428takeיִקַּ֥חyi.KachH3947and offerוְיַ֛עַלve.Ya.'alH5927upH5927whatH2896isH2896goodהַטּ֣וֹבha.TovH2896in his sightבְּעֵינָ֑יוbe.'ay.noH5869.Lookרְאֵה֙re.'EhH7200, here arethe oxenהַבָּקָ֣רha.ba.KarH1241for the burntלָעֹלָ֔הla.'o.LahH5930offeringH5930,the threshingH4173sledgesH4173and the yokesוּכְלֵ֥יu.khe.LeiH3627of the oxenהַבָּקָ֖רha.ba.KarH1241for the woodלָעֵצִֽים׃la.'e.TzimH6086.
23Everythingהַכֹּ֗לha.KolH3605,O kingהַמֶּ֖לֶךְha.Me.lekhH4428,Araunahאֲרַ֥וְנָה'a.Rav.nahH728givesנָתַ֛ןna.TanH5414to the kingלַמֶּ֑לֶךְ סla.Me.lekhH4428.”And Araunahאֲרַ֙וְנָה֙'a.Rav.nahH728saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to the kingהַמֶּ֔לֶךְha.Me.lekhH4428, “May the Lordיְהוָ֥הYah.wehH3068your Godאֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ'e.lo.Hei.khaH430beH7521favorableH7521to you.”
24However, the kingהַמֶּ֜לֶךְha.Me.lekhH4428saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Araunahאֲרַ֗וְנָה'a.Rav.nahH728, “NoH3808,but I will certainlyקָנ֨וֹka.NoH7069buyאֶקְנֶ֤ה'ek.NehH7069itfrom you for a priceבִּמְחִ֔ירbim.ChirH4242; forI will not offerאַעֲלֶ֛ה'a.'a.LehH5927burntעֹל֣וֹתo.LotH5930offeringsH5930to the Lordלַיהוָ֥הla.Yah.wehH3068my Godאֱלֹהַ֖י'e.lo.HaiH430thatH2600costH2600me nothingH2600.” SoDavidדָּוִ֤דda.VidH1732boughtוַיִּ֨קֶןvai.Yi.kenH7069the threshingהַגֹּ֙רֶן֙ha.Go.renH1637floorH1637and the oxenהַבָּקָ֔רha.ba.KarH1241for fiftyחֲמִשִּֽׁים׃cha.mi.ShimH2572shekelsשְׁקָלִ֥יםshe.ka.LimH8255of silverבְּכֶ֖סֶףbe.Khe.sefH3701.
25Then Davidדָּוִ֤דda.VidH1732builtוַיִּבֶן֩vai.yi.VenH1129thereשָׁ֨םshamH8033an altarמִזְבֵּ֙חַ֙miz.Be.achH4196to the Lordלַֽיהוָ֔הla.Yah.wehH3068,and he offeredוַיַּ֥עַלvai.Ya.'alH5927burntעֹל֖וֹתo.LotH5930offeringsH5930and peaceוּשְׁלָמִ֑יםu.she.la.MimH8002offeringsH8002. Andthe Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068respondedH6279toH6279prayerH6279for the landלָאָ֔רֶץla.'A.retzH776,and the plagueהַמַּגֵּפָ֖הha.ma.ge.FahH4046waswithdrawnוַתֵּעָצַ֥רva.te.'a.TzarH6113from Israelיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃Yis.ra.'ElH3478.
