2So allכָּל־kol-H3605the menאִ֤ישׁ'ishH376of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵל֙Yis.ra.'ElH3478withdrewוַיַּ֜עַלvai.Ya.'alH5927from followingמֵאַחֲרֵ֣יme.'a.cha.ReiH310Davidדָוִ֔דda.VidH1732andfollowedאַחֲרֵ֖י'a.cha.ReiH310Shebaשֶׁ֣בַעShe.va'H7652the sonבֶּן־ben-H1121of Bichriבִּכְרִ֑יbikh.RiH1075;but the menוְאִ֤ישׁve.'IshH376of Judahיְהוּדָה֙ye.hu.DahH3063remainedH1692loyalH1692to their kingבְמַלְכָּ֔םve.mal.KamH4428,from the Jordanהַיַּרְדֵּ֖ןhai.yar.DenH3383even to Jerusalemיְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ye.ru.sha.LimH3389.

3Then Davidדָוִ֣דda.VidH1732cameH935to his houseבֵּיתוֹ֮bei.ToH1004in Jerusalemיְרֽוּשָׁלִַם֒ye.ru.sha.LimH3389, andthe kingהַמֶּ֡לֶךְha.Me.lekhH4428tookוַיִּקַּ֣חvai.yi.KachH3947the tenעֶֽשֶׂר־'e.ser-H6235womenנָשִׁ֣ים׀na.ShimH802,the concubinesפִּלַגְשִׁ֡יםpi.lag.ShimH6370whomאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834he had leftH5117behindH5117to takeH8104careH8104of the houseהַבַּ֜יִתha.Ba.yitH1004,and putוַֽיִּתְּנֵ֤םvai.yi.te.NemH5414them in custodyבֵּית־ מִשְׁמֶ֙רֶת֙beit- mish.Me.retH1004 H4931and providedH3557them withH3557foodH3557, but did nothaveH935relationsH935withH935them. 4Now the kingהַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ha.Me.lekhH4428saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559toAmasaעֲמָשָׂ֔א'a.ma.Sa'H6021, “Summonהַזְעֶק־haz.'ek-H2199the menאִישׁ־'ish-H376of Judahיְהוּדָ֖הye.hu.DahH3063for me withinthreeשְׁלֹ֣שֶׁתshe.Lo.shetH7969daysיָמִ֑יםya.MimH3117,and be presentעֲמֹֽד׃'a.ModH5975hereפֹּ֥הpohH6311yourselfוְאַתָּ֖הve.'a.TahH859.”

5So Amasaעֲמָשָׂ֖א'a.ma.Sa'H6021wentוַיֵּ֥לֶךְvai.Ye.lekhH1980to summonלְהַזְעִ֣יקle.haz.'IkH2199the men ofJudahיְהוּדָ֑הye.hu.DahH3063, but he wasdelayedוַיּ֕וֹחֶרvai.yi.cherH309longer thanמִן־min-H4480the setH4150timeהַמּוֹעֵ֖דha.mo.'EdH4150whichאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834he had designatedיְעָדֽוֹ׃ סye.'a.DoH3259for him.

7So Joab’sיוֹאָ֔בyo.'AvH3097menH376wentH3318outH3318afterאַֽחֲרָיו֙'a.cha.RavH310him,along with the Cherethitesוְהַכְּרֵתִ֥יve.ha.ke.re.TiH3774,the Pelethitesוְהַפְּלֵתִ֖יve.ha.pe.le.TiH6432,and allוְכָל־ve.kholH3605the warriorsהַגִּבֹּרִ֑יםha.gi.bo.RimH1368;and they leftH3318Jerusalemמִיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔םmi.Ru.sha.LimH3389to pursueלִרְדֹּ֕ף אַחֲרֵ֖יlir.Dof 'a.cha.ReiH7291 H310Shebaשֶׁ֥בַעShe.va'H7652the sonבֶּן־ben-H1121of Bichriבִּכְרִֽי׃bikh.RiH1075.

8When they were at the largeהַגְּדוֹלָה֙ha.ge.do.LahH1419stoneהָאֶ֤בֶןha.'E.venH68whichאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834is inGibeonבְּגִבְע֔וֹןbe.giv.'onH1391,Amasaוַעֲמָשָׂ֖אva.'a.ma.Sa'H6021cameבָּ֣אba'H935to meetלִפְנֵיהֶ֑םlif.nei.HemH6440them. Now Joabוְיוֹאָ֞בve.yo.'AvH3097was dressedחָג֣וּר׀cha.GurH2296 H3830in his militaryמִדּ֣וֹmi.DoH4055attireH3830,and overH5921it he hada beltחֲג֥וֹרcha.GorH2290with a swordחֶ֙רֶב֙che.revH2719in its sheathבְּתַעְרָ֔הּbe.ta'.RahH8593strappedמְצֻמֶּ֤דֶתme.tzu.Me.detH6775on at his waistמָתְנָיו֙ma.te.NavH4975;and as he wentH3318forwardH3318,it fellH5307outH5307.

9And Joabיוֹאָב֙yo.'AvH3097saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Amasaלַעֲמָשָׂ֔אla.'a.ma.Sa'H6021, “Is it goingH7965wellH7965for you, my brotherאָחִ֑י'a.ChiH251?” AndJoabיוֹאָ֛בyo.'AvH3097tookH270holdוַתֹּ֜חֶזva.To.chezH270of Amasaעֲמָשָׂ֖א'a.ma.Sa'H6021by the beardבִּזְקַ֥ןbiz.KanH2206with his rightיְמִ֥יןye.MinH3225handיַד־yad-H3027to kissלִנְשָׁק־lin.shok-H5401him.

10But Amasaוַעֲמָשָׂ֨אva.'a.ma.Sa'H6021was not on guardנִשְׁמַ֜רnish.MarH8104against the swordבַּחֶ֣רֶב׀ba.Che.revH2719whichאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834was in Joab’sיוֹאָ֗בyo.'AvH3097handבְּיַד־be.yad-H3027, sohe struckוַיַּכֵּהוּ֩vai.ya.ke.HuH5221him in the bellyהַחֹ֜מֶשׁha.Cho.meshH2570with it and spilledH8210outH8210his intestinesמֵעָ֥יוme.'AvH4578on the groundאַ֛רְצָה'Ar.tzahH776,and didH8138not strikehim againH8138,and he diedוַיָּמֹ֑ת סvai.ya.MotH4191.Then Joabוְיוֹאָב֙ve.yo.'AvH3097and his brotherאָחִ֔יו'a.ChivH251Abishaiוַאֲבִישַׁ֣יva.'a.vi.ShaiH52pursuedרָדַ֕ף אַחֲרֵ֖יra.Daf 'a.cha.ReiH7291 H310Shebaשֶׁ֥בַעShe.va'H7652the sonבֶּן־ben-H1121of Bichriבִּכְרִֽי׃bikh.RiH1075.

11Now oneוְאִישׁ֙ve.'IshH376of Joab’sיוֹאָ֑בyo.'AvH3097youngמִֽנַּעֲרֵ֖יmi.na.'a.ReiH5288menH5288stoodעָמַ֣ד'a.MadH5975by him and saidוַיֹּ֗אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Whoeverמִי֩ אֲשֶׁ֨רmi 'a.SherH4310 H834favorsחָפֵ֧ץcha.FetzH2654Joabבְּיוֹאָ֛בbe.yo.'AvH3097and whoeverוּמִ֥י אֲשֶׁר־u.Mi 'a.Sher-H4310 H834is for Davidלְדָוִ֖דle.da.VidH1732,followאַחֲרֵ֥י'a.cha.ReiH310Joabיוֹאָֽב׃yo.'AvH3097!”

12But Amasaוַעֲמָשָׂ֛אva.'a.ma.Sa'H6021was wallowingמִתְגֹּלֵ֥לmit.go.LelH1556in his ownbloodבַּדָּ֖םba.DamH1818in the middleבְּת֣וֹךְbe.TokhH8432of the roadהַֽמְסִלָּ֑הha.me.si.LahH4546.And when the manהָאִ֜ישׁha.'IshH376sawוַיַּ֨רְאvai.Yar'H7200that allכָּל־kol-H3605the peopleהָעָ֗םha.'AmH5971stoodH5975stillH5975,he removedוַיַּסֵּב֩vai.ya.SevH5437Amasaעֲמָשָׂ֨א'a.ma.Sa'H6021from the roadהַֽמְסִלָּ֤הham.si.LahH4546to the fieldהַשָּׂדֶה֙ha.sa.DehH7704and threwוַיַּשְׁלֵ֤ךְvai.yash.LekhH7993a garmentבֶּ֔גֶדBe.gedH899overH5921him whenH3512he sawרָאָ֔הra.'AhH7200that everyoneכָּל־kol-H3605who cameהַבָּ֥אha.Ba'H935by him stoodH5975stillH5975.

14Now he wentH5674onH5674through allבְּכָל־be.kholH3605the tribesשִׁבְטֵ֣יshiv.TeiH7626of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֗לYis.ra.'ElH3478to AbelH59,that is, Beth-maacahH1038,and allוְכָל־ve.kholH3605the Beritesהַבֵּרִ֑ים סha.be.RimH1276;and they assembledוַיִּקָּ֣הֲל֔וּvai.yik.le.huH6950and wentוַיָּבֹ֖אוּvai.ya.Vo.'uH935afterאַחֲרָֽיו׃'a.cha.RavH310him as wellאַף־'af-H637.

15And they cameוַיָּבֹ֜אוּvai.ya.Vo.'uH935and besiegedוַיָּצֻ֣רוּ עָלָ֗יוvai.ya.Tzu.ru 'a.LavH6696 H5921him inAbelH62Beth-maacahH1038, and theybuiltH8210upH8210an assaultH5550rampH5550againstאֶל־'el-H413the cityהָעִ֔ירha.'IrH5892,and it stoodוַֽתַּעֲמֹ֖דva.ta.'a.ModH5975against the outerH2426rampartבַּחֵ֑לba.ChelH2426;and allוְכָל־ve.kholH3605the peopleהָעָם֙ha.'AmH5971whoאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834were with Joabיוֹאָ֔בyo.'AvH3097were wreakingH7843destructionH7843in order to toppleלְהַפִּ֥ילle.ha.PilH5307the wallהַחוֹמָֽה׃ha.cho.MahH2346.

16Thena wiseחֲכָמָ֖הcha.kha.MahH2450womanאִשָּׁ֥ה'i.ShahH802calledוַתִּקְרָ֛אva.tik.Ra'H7121outH7121from the cityהָעִ֑ירha.'IrH5892, “Listenשִׁמְע֤וּshim.'UH8085,listenשִׁמְעוּ֙shim.'UH8085!Pleaseנָ֣אna'H4994tellאִמְרוּ־'im.ru-H559Joabיוֹאָ֔בyo.'AvH3097, ‘Comeקְרַ֣בke.RavH7126hereעַד־ הֵ֔נָּה'ad- He.nahH5704 H2008that I may speakוַאֲדַבְּרָ֖הva.'a.da.be.RahH1696with you.’”

17So he approachedוַיִּקְרַ֣בvai.yik.RavH7126her, and the womanהָאִשָּׁ֛הha.'i.ShahH802saidוַתֹּ֧אמֶרva.To.merH559, “Are you Joabיוֹאָ֖בyo.'AvH3097?”And he answeredוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “I am.” Then she saidוַתֹּ֣אמֶרva.To.merH559to him, “Listenשְׁמַע֙she.Ma'H8085to the wordsדִּבְרֵ֣יdiv.ReiH1697of your slaveאֲמָתֶ֔ךָ'a.ma.Te.khaH519.”And he saidוַיֹּ֖אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “I am listeningשֹׁמֵ֥עַsho.Me.a'H8085.”

18Then she spokeוַתֹּ֖אמֶרva.To.merH559,sayingלֵאמֹ֑רle.MorH559, “In the pastבָרִֽאשֹׁנָה֙va.ri.sho.NahH7223they used to sayלֵאמֹ֔רle.MorH559, ‘They will undoubtedlyשָׁאֹ֧לsha.'OlH7592askיְשָׁאֲל֛וּye.sha.'a.LuH7592adviceat Abelבְּאָבֵ֖לbe.'a.VelH59,’and thatH3651isH3651howH3651they endedהֵתַֽמּוּ׃he.Ta.muH8552a dispute.

20Joabיוֹאָ֖בyo.'AvH3097repliedוַיַּ֥עַןvai.Ya.'anH6030, “Farחָלִ֤ילָהcha.Li.lahH2486be it, farחָלִ֙ילָה֙cha.Li.lahH2486be it from me that I would consumeאֲבַלַּ֖ע'a.va.La'H1104or destroyאַשְׁחִֽית׃'ash.ChitH7843!

Sohe blewוַיִּתְקַע֙vai.yit.Ka'H8628the trumpetבַּשּׁוֹפָ֔רba.sho.FarH7782,and they were dispersedוַיָּפֻ֥צוּvai.ya.Fu.tzuH6327from the cityהָעִ֖ירha.'IrH5892,eachאִ֣ישׁ'ishH376to his tentלְאֹהָלָ֑יוle.'o.ha.LavH168.Joabוְיוֹאָ֛בve.yo.'AvH3097also returnedשָׁ֥בshavH7725to the kingהַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ סha.Me.lekhH4428at Jerusalemיְרוּשָׁלִַ֖םye.ru.sha.LimH3389.

23Now Joabוְיוֹאָ֕בve.yo.'AvH3097was in commandof the entireכָּל־kol-H3605armyהַצָּבָ֖אha.tza.Va'H6635of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֑לYis.ra.'ElH3478,and Benaiahוּבְנָיָה֙u.ve.na.YahH1141the sonבֶּן־ben-H1121of Jehoiadaיְה֣וֹיָדָ֔עye.Ho.ya.Da'H3077was overH5921the Cherethitesהַכְּרֵתִ֖יha.ke.riH3774and the Pelethitesהַפְּלֵתִֽי׃ha.pe.le.TiH6432;
