Context of 1 Timothy 6:5
3If anyone advocates a different doctrine and does not agree with sound words, those of our Lord Jesus Christ, and with the doctrine conforming to godliness, 4he is conceited and understands nothing; but he has a sick craving for controversial questions and disputes about words, from which come envy, strife, abusive language, evil suspicions, and constant friction between people of depraved mind and deprived of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. 6But godliness actually is a means of great gain when accompanied by contentment. 7For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it, either.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds - Disputations that cannot be settled, because their partisans will not listen to the truth; and they will not listen to the truth because their minds are corrupt. Both under the law and under the Gospel the true religion was: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, soul, mind, and strength; and thy neighbor as thyself. Where, therefore, the love of God and man does not prevail, there there is no…Read the comment

The word which is here used in the Received Text - ́ paradiatribē- occurs nowhere else in the New Testament. It properly means “mis-employment;” then “idle occupation.” (Robinson‘s Lexicon) The verb from which this is derived means to “rub in pieces, to wear away;” and hence the word here used refers to what…Read the comment
