Context of 1 Timothy 6:5
3Some people may contradict our teaching, but these are the wholesome teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. These teachings promote a godly life. 4Anyone who teaches something different is arrogant and lacks understanding. Such a person has an unhealthy desire to quibble over the meaning of words. This stirs up arguments ending in jealousy, division, slander, and evil suspicions. These people always cause trouble. Their minds are corrupt, and they have turned their backs on the truth. To them, a show of godliness is just a way to become wealthy. 6Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth. 7After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds - Disputations that cannot be settled, because their partisans will not listen to the truth; and they will not listen to the truth because their minds are corrupt. Both under the law and under the Gospel the true religion was: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, soul, mind, and strength; and thy neighbor as thyself. Where, therefore, the love of God and man does not prevail, there there is no…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5Perverse disputings - Margin, “gallings one of another.” In regard to the correct reading of this passage, see Bib. Repository, vol. iii. pp. 61,62. The word which is here used in the Received Text - ́ paradiatribē- occurs nowhere else in the New Testament. It properly means “mis-employment;” then “idle occupation.” (Robinson‘s Lexicon) The verb from which this is derived means to “rub in pieces, to wear away;” and hence the word here used refers to what…Read the comment
