Context of 1 Samuel 3:3
1Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord before Eli. And word from the Lord was rare in those days, visions were infrequent. 2It happened at that time as Eli was lying down in his place (now his eyesight had begun to grow dim and he could not see well), and the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord where the ark of God was, 4that the Lord called Samuel; and he said, “Here I am.” 5Then he ran to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call, lie down again.” So he went and lay down.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 3The priests had to keep God's lamp burning all night (Exodus 27:20–21; 30:7–8). Samuel sleeping near the ark shows his closeness to God's presence and purpose, unlike Eli and his sons.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 33. ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the Lord--The "temple" seems to have become the established designation of the tabernacle, and the time indicated was towards the morning twilight, as the lamps were extinguished at sunrise (see Le 6:12, 13).Read the comment
