Solomon Turns from God
1Now 1KingH4428 SolomonH8010 lovedH157 manyH7227 foreignH5237 womenH802 along with the daughterH1323 of PharaohH6547: MoabiteH4125, AmmoniteH5984, EdomiteH130, SidonianH6722, and HittiteH2850 womenH802, 2from the nationsH1471 concerning whichH834 the LordH3068 had saidH559 to the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478, “2You shall not 3associateH935 with them, norH3808 shall they 4associateH935 with you, for they will surelyH403 turnH5186 your heartH3824 awayH5186 afterH310 their godsH430.” SolomonH8010 heldH1692 fastH1692 to theseH1992 in loveH157. 35He hadH1961 sevenH7651 hundredH3967 wivesH802, princessesH8282, and threeH7969 hundredH3967 concubinesH6370, and his wivesH802 turnedH5186 his heartH3820 awayH5186. 4For whenH6256 SolomonH8010 was oldH2209, his wivesH802 turnedH5186 his heartH3824 awayH5186 afterH310 otherH312 godsH430; and 6his heartH3824 was not 7whollyH8003 devotedH8003 to the LordH3068 his GodH430, as the heartH3824 of DavidH1732 his fatherH1 had been. 5For SolomonH8010 wentH1980 afterH310 8AshtorethH6252 the goddessH430 of the SidoniansH6722 and afterH310 910MilcomH4445 the detestableH8251 idolH8251 of the AmmonitesH5984. 6SolomonH8010 didH6213 whatH7451 was evilH7451 in the sightH5869 of the LordH3068, and did not followH310 the LordH3068 fullyH4390, as DavidH1732 his fatherH1 had done. 7ThenH227 SolomonH8010 builtH1129 a highH1116 placeH1116 for 11ChemoshH3645 the detestableH8251 idolH8251 of MoabH4124, on the mountainH2022 whichH834 is 12eastH5921H6440 of JerusalemH3389, and for 13MolechH4432 the detestableH8251 idolH8251 of the sonsH1121 of AmmonH5983. 8ThusH3651 also he didH6213 for allH3605 his foreignH5237 wivesH802, who burnedH6999 incenseH6999 and sacrificedH2076 to their godsH430.
9Now 14the LordH3068 was angryH599 with SolomonH8010 15becauseH3588 his heartH3824 was turnedH5186 awayH5186 from the LordH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, 16who had appearedH7200 to him twiceH6471, 10and 17had commandedH6680 him concerningH5921 thisH2088 thingH1697, that he should not goH1980 afterH310 otherH312 godsH430; but he did not observeH8104 whatH834 the LordH3068 had commandedH6680. 11So the LordH3068 saidH559 to SolomonH8010, “BecauseH3282H834 18you have doneH1961H5973 thisH2088, and you have not keptH8104 My covenantH1285 and My statutesH2708, whichH834 I have commandedH6680 you, 19I will surelyH7167 tearH7167 the kingdomH4467 from you, and will giveH5414 it to your servantH5650. 12NeverthelessH389 I will not doH6213 it in your daysH3117 for the sakeH4616 of your fatherH1 DavidH1732, but I will tearH7167 it out of the handH3027 of your sonH1121. 13HoweverH7534, 20I will not tearH7167 awayH7167 allH3605 the kingdomH4467, but 21I will giveH5414 oneH259 tribeH7626 to your sonH1121 for the sakeH4616 of My servantH5650 DavidH1732 and 22for the sakeH4616 of JerusalemH3389 whichH834 I have chosenH977.”
God Raises Adversaries
14Then the LordH3068 raisedH6965 up an adversaryH7854 to SolomonH8010, HadadH1908 the EdomiteH130; he was of the 23royalH4428 lineH2233 in EdomH112. 15For it cameH1961 about, 24when DavidH1732 was in EdomH112, and JoabH3097 the commanderH8269 of the armyH6635 had goneH5927 up to buryH6912 the slainH2491, and had 25struckH5221 downH5221 everyH3605 maleH2145 in EdomH112 16(for JoabH3097 and allH3605 IsraelH3478 stayedH3427 thereH8033 sixH8337 monthsH2320, untilH5704 he had cutH3772 offH3772 everyH3605 maleH2145 in EdomH112), 17that HadadH1908 fledH1272 26to EgyptH4714, he and certainH376 EdomitesH130 of his father’sH1 servantsH5650 with him, while HadadH1908 was a youngH6996 boyH5288. 18They aroseH6965 from MidianH4080 and cameH935 to 27ParanH6290; and they tookH3947 menH376 with them from ParanH6290 and cameH935 to EgyptH4714, to PharaohH6547 kingH4428 of EgyptH4714, who gaveH5414 him a houseH1004 and assignedH559 him foodH3899 and gaveH5414 him landH776. 19Now HadadH1908 foundH4672 greatH3966 favorH2580 28beforeH5869 PharaohH6547, so that he gaveH5414 him in marriageH802 the sisterH269 of his own wifeH802, the sisterH269 of TahpenesH8472 the queenH1377. 20The sisterH269 of TahpenesH8472 boreH3205 his sonH1121 GenubathH1592, whom TahpenesH8472 weanedH1580 in Pharaoh’sH6547 houseH1004; and GenubathH1592 was in Pharaoh’sH6547 houseH1004 amongH8432 the sonsH1121 of PharaohH6547. 21But 29when HadadH1908 heardH8085 in EgyptH4714 that DavidH1732 sleptH7901 with his fathersH1 and that JoabH3097 the commanderH8269 of the armyH6635 was deadH4191, HadadH1908 saidH559 to PharaohH6547, “SendH7971 me awayH7971, that I may goH1980 to my own countryH776.” 22Then PharaohH6547 saidH559 to him, “But whatH4100 have you lackedH2638 with me, that beholdH2009, you are seekingH1245 to goH1980 to your own countryH776?” And he answeredH559, “NothingH3808; neverthelessH3588 you must surelyH7971 30letH7971 me goH7971.”
2331GodH430 also raisedH6965 up another adversaryH7854 to him, RezonH7331 the sonH1121 of EliadaH450, whoH834 had fledH1272 from his lordH113 32HadadezerH1909 kingH4428 of ZobahH6678. 24He gatheredH6908 menH376 to himself and becameH1961 leaderH8269 of a maraudingH1416 bandH1416, 33after DavidH1732 slewH2026 them of Zobah; and they wentH1980 to DamascusH1834 and stayedH3427 34there, and reignedH4427 in DamascusH1834. 25So he was an adversaryH7854 to IsraelH3478 allH3605 the daysH3117 of SolomonH8010, along with the evilH7463 that HadadH1908 did; and he abhorredH6973 IsraelH3478 and reignedH4427 overH5921 AramH758.
26Then 35JeroboamH3379 the sonH1121 of NebatH5028, an EphraimiteH673 of ZeredahH6868, Solomon’sH8010 servantH5650, whose mother’sH517 nameH8034 was ZeruahH6871, a widowH490, 36also 37rebelledH7311H3027 against the kingH4428. 27Now thisH2088 was the reasonH1697 whyH834 he 38rebelledH7311H3027 against the kingH4428: 39SolomonH8010 builtH1129 the 40MilloH4407, and closedH5462 up the breachH6556 of the cityH5892 of his fatherH1 DavidH1732. 28Now the manH376 JeroboamH3379 was a valiantH2428 warriorH1368, and when 41SolomonH8010 sawH7200 that the youngH5288 manH5288 was 42industriousH4399H6213, he appointedH6485 him over allH3605 the 43forcedH5447 laborH5447 of the houseH1004 of JosephH3130. 29It cameH1961 about at that timeH6256, when JeroboamH3379 wentH3318 out of JerusalemH3389, that 44the prophetH5030 AhijahH281 the ShiloniteH7888 foundH4672 him on the roadH1870. Now 45Ahijah had clothedH3680 himself with a newH2319 cloakH8008; and bothH8147 of them were aloneH905 in the fieldH7704. 30Then 46AhijahH281 tookH8610 holdH8610 of the newH2319 cloakH8008 whichH834 was on him and toreH7167 it into twelveH8147H6240 piecesH7168. 31He saidH559 to JeroboamH3379, “TakeH3947 for yourself tenH6235 piecesH7168; for thusH3541 saysH559 the LordH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, ‘BeholdH2009, 47I will tearH7167 the kingdomH4467 out of the handH3027 of SolomonH8010 and giveH5414 you tenH6235 tribesH7626 32(48but he will haveH1961 oneH259 tribeH7626, for the sakeH4616 of My servantH5650 DavidH1732 and for the sakeH4616 of JerusalemH3389, 49the cityH5892 whichH834 I have chosenH977 from allH3605 the tribesH7626 of IsraelH3478), 33becauseH3282H834 they have forsakenH5800 Me, and 50have worshipedH7812 AshtorethH6252 the goddessH430 of the SidoniansH6722, 51ChemoshH3645 the godH430 of MoabH4124, and MilcomH4445 the godH430 of the sonsH1121 of AmmonH5983; and they have not walkedH1980 in My waysH1870, doingH6213 whatH3477 is rightH3477 in My sightH5869 and observing My statutesH2708 and My ordinancesH4941, as his fatherH1 DavidH1732 did. 34Nevertheless I will not takeH3947 the wholeH3605 kingdomH4467 out of his handH3027, but I will makeH7896 him 52rulerH5387 allH3605 the daysH3117 of his lifeH2425, for the sakeH4616 of My servantH5650 DavidH1732 whomH834 I choseH977, whoH834 observedH8104 My commandmentsH4687 and My statutesH2708; 35but 53I will takeH3947 the kingdomH4410 from his son’sH1121 handH3027 and giveH5414 it to you, even tenH6235 tribesH7626. 36But 54to his sonH1121 I will giveH5414 oneH259 tribeH7626, 55that My servantH5650 DavidH1732 may haveH1961 a lampH5215 alwaysH3605H3117 beforeH6440 Me in JerusalemH3389, 56the cityH5892 whereH834H8033 I have chosenH977 for Myself to putH7760 My nameH8034. 37I will takeH3947 you, and you shall reignH4427 over whateverH3605H834 57you desireH183, and you shall be kingH4428 overH5921 IsraelH3478. 38Then it will be, that ifH518 you listenH8085 to allH3605 that I commandH6680 you and walkH1980 in My waysH1870, and doH6213 whatH3477 is rightH3477 in My sightH5869 by observingH8104 My statutesH2708 and My commandmentsH4687, as My servantH5650 DavidH1732 didH6213, then 58I will be with you and 59buildH1129 you an enduringH539 houseH1004 as I builtH1129 for DavidH1732, and I will giveH5414 IsraelH3478 to you. 39Thus I will afflictH6031 the 60descendantsH2233 of DavidH1732 for thisH2088, but not alwaysH3605H3117.’” 40SolomonH8010 soughtH1245 therefore to putH4191 JeroboamH3379 to deathH4191; but JeroboamH3379 aroseH6965 and fledH1272 to EgyptH4714 to 61ShishakH7895 kingH4428 of EgyptH4714, and he was in EgyptH4714 untilH5704 the deathH4194 of SolomonH8010.
The Death of Solomon
4162Now the restH3499 of the actsH1697 of SolomonH8010 and whateverH3605H834 he didH6213, and his wisdomH2451, are they not writtenH3789 in the bookH5612 of the actsH1697 of SolomonH8010? 42Thus 63the timeH3117 that SolomonH8010 reignedH4427 in JerusalemH3389 overH5921 allH3605 IsraelH3478 was fortyH705 yearsH8141. 43And SolomonH8010 64sleptH7901 with his fathersH1 and was buriedH6912 in the cityH5892 of his fatherH1 DavidH1732, and his sonH1121 65RehoboamH7346 reignedH4427 in his placeH8478.
