Solomon Turns from God
1Now 1KingH4428 SolomonH8010 lovedH157 manyH7227 foreignH5237 womenH802 along with the daughterH1323 of PharaohH6547: MoabiteH4125, AmmoniteH5984, EdomiteH130, SidonianH6722, and HittiteH2850 womenH802, 2from the nationsH1471 of whichH834 the LordH3068 had saidH559 to the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478, “2You shall not 3associateH935 with them, norH3808 shall they 4associateH935 with you; they will certainlyH403 turnH5186 your heartH3824 awayH5186 5to followH310 their godsH430.” SolomonH8010 clungH1692 to theseH1992 in loveH157. 36He hadH1961 sevenH7651 hundredH3967 wivesH802, who were 7princessesH8282, and threeH7969 hundredH3967 concubinesH6370; and his wivesH802 turnedH5186 his heartH3820 awayH5186. 4For whenH6256 SolomonH8010 was oldH2209, his wivesH802 turnedH5186 his heartH3824 awayH5186 8to followH310 otherH312 godsH430; and 9his heartH3824 was not 10whollyH8003 devotedH8003 to the LordH3068 his GodH430, as the heartH3824 of his fatherH1 DavidH1732 had been. 5For SolomonH8010 becameH1980 a followerH1980H310 of 11AshtorethH6252 the goddessH430 of the SidoniansH6722, and of 1213MilcomH4445 the abhorrentH8251 idolH8251 of the AmmonitesH5984. 6So SolomonH8010 didH6213 whatH7451 wasH7451 evilH7451 in the sightH5869 of the LordH3068, and did not followH310 the LordH3068 fullyH4390, as his fatherH1 DavidH1732 had done. 7ThenH227 SolomonH8010 builtH1129 a highH1116 placeH1116 for 14ChemoshH3645, the abhorrentH8251 idolH8251 of MoabH4124, on the mountainH2022 that is 15eastH5921H6440 of JerusalemH3389, and for 16MolechH4432, the abhorrentH8251 idolH8251 of the sonsH1121 of AmmonH5983. 8He also didH6213 the sameH3651 for allH3605 his foreignH5237 wivesH802, who burnedH6999 incenseH6999 and sacrificedH2076 to their godsH430.
9Now 17the LordH3068 was angryH599 with SolomonH8010 18becauseH3588 his heartH3824 had turnedH5186 awayH5186 from the LordH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, 19who had appearedH7200 to him twiceH6471, 10and 20had commandedH6680 him regardingH5921 thisH2088 thingH1697, that he was not to followH1980H310 otherH312 godsH430; but he did not complyH8104 withH8104 whatH834 the LordH3068 had commandedH6680. 11So the LordH3068 saidH559 to SolomonH8010, “SinceH3282H834 21you have doneH1961H5973 thisH2088, and you have not keptH8104 My covenantH1285 and My statutesH2708, whichH834 I have commandedH6680 you, 22I will certainlyH7167 tearH7167 the kingdomH4467 awayH7167 from you, and will giveH5414 it to your servantH5650. 12HoweverH389, I will not doH6213 it in your daysH3117, only for the sakeH4616 of your fatherH1 DavidH1732; but I will tearH7167 it awayH7167 from the handH3027 of your sonH1121. 13YetH7534 23I will not tearH7167 awayH7167 allH3605 the kingdomH4467, but 24I will giveH5414 oneH259 tribeH7626 to your sonH1121 for the sakeH4616 of My servantH5650 DavidH1732, and 25for the sakeH4616 of JerusalemH3389, whichH834 I have chosenH977.”
God Raises Adversaries
14Then the LordH3068 raisedH6965 upH6965 an adversaryH7854 against SolomonH8010, HadadH1908 the EdomiteH130; he was of the 26royalH4428 lineH2233 in EdomH112. 15For it cameH1961 aboutH1961, 27when DavidH1732 was in EdomH112 and JoabH3097 the commanderH8269 of the armyH6635 had goneH5927 upH5927 to buryH6912 those killedH2491 in battle, and had 28struckH5221 andH5221 killedH5221 everyH3605 maleH2145 in EdomH112 16(for JoabH3097 and allH3605 IsraelH3478 stayedH3427 thereH8033 for sixH8337 monthsH2320, untilH5704 he had eliminatedH3772 everyH3605 maleH2145 in EdomH112), 17that HadadH1908 fledH1272 29to EgyptH4714, he and certainH376 EdomitesH130 of his father’sH1 servantsH5650 with him, while HadadH1908 was a youngH6996 boyH5288. 18They setH6965 outH6965 from MidianH4080 and cameH935 to 30ParanH6290; and they tookH3947 menH376 with them from ParanH6290 and cameH935 to EgyptH4714, to PharaohH6547 kingH4428 of EgyptH4714, who gaveH5414 him a houseH1004 and assignedH559 him foodH3899 and gaveH5414 him landH776. 19Now HadadH1908 foundH4672 greatH3966 favorH2580 in the sightH5869 of PharaohH6547, so that he gaveH5414 him in marriageH802 the sisterH269 of his own wifeH802, the sisterH269 of TahpenesH8472 the queenH1377. 20And the sisterH269 of TahpenesH8472 gaveH3205 birthH3205 to his sonH1121 GenubathH1592, whom TahpenesH8472 weanedH1580 in Pharaoh’sH6547 houseH1004; and GenubathH1592 was in Pharaoh’sH6547 houseH1004 amongH8432 the sonsH1121 of PharaohH6547. 21But 31when HadadH1908 heardH8085 in EgyptH4714 that DavidH1732 32layH7901 downH7901 with his fathersH1 and that JoabH3097 the commanderH8269 of the armyH6635 was deadH4191, HadadH1908 saidH559 to PharaohH6547, “LetH7971 me goH7971, so that I may goH1980 to my own countryH776.” 22However, PharaohH6547 saidH559 to him, “But whatH4100 have you lackedH2638 with me that you are hereH2009, requestingH1245 to goH1980 to your own countryH776?” And he answeredH559, “NothingH3808; neverthelessH3588 you mustH7971 letH7971 me goH7971.”
2333GodH430 also raisedH6965 upH6965 another adversaryH7854 against him, RezonH7331 the sonH1121 of EliadaH450, whoH834 had fledH1272 from his masterH113 34HadadezerH1909, kingH4428 of ZobahH6678. 24And he gatheredH6908 menH376 to himself and becameH1961 leaderH8269 of a maraudingH1416 bandH1416, 35after DavidH1732 killedH2026 those of Zobah; and they wentH1980 to DamascusH1834 and stayedH3427 36there, and reignedH4427 in DamascusH1834. 25So he was an adversaryH7854 to IsraelH3478 allH3605 the daysH3117 of SolomonH8010, along with the harmH7463 that HadadH1908 inflicted; and he feltH6973 disgustH6973 for IsraelH3478 and reignedH4427 overH5921 AramH758.
26Then 37JeroboamH3379 the sonH1121 of NebatH5028, an EphraimiteH673 of ZeredahH6868, Solomon’sH8010 servantH5650, whose mother’sH517 nameH8034 was ZeruahH6871, a widowH490, 38also 39rebelledH7311H3027 against the kingH4428. 27Now thisH2088 was the reasonH1697 whyH834 he 40rebelledH7311H3027 against the kingH4428: 41SolomonH8010 builtH1129 the 42MilloH4407, and closedH5462 upH5462 the breachH6556 of the cityH5892 of his fatherH1 DavidH1732. 28Now the manH376 JeroboamH3379 was a valiantH2428 warriorH1368, and when 43SolomonH8010 sawH7200 that the youngH5288 manH5288 was 44industriousH4399H6213, he appointedH6485 him over allH3605 the 45forcedH5447 laborH5447 of the houseH1004 of JosephH3130. 29And it cameH1961 aboutH1961 at that timeH6256, when JeroboamH3379 wentH3318 outH3318 of JerusalemH3389, that 46the prophetH5030 AhijahH281 the ShiloniteH7888 foundH4672 him on the roadH1870. Now 47Ahijah had clothedH3680 himself with a newH2319 cloakH8008; and bothH8147 of them were aloneH905 in the fieldH7704. 30Then 48AhijahH281 tookH8610 holdH8610 of the newH2319 cloakH8008 whichH834 was on him and toreH7167 it into twelveH8147H6240 piecesH7168. 31And he saidH559 to JeroboamH3379, “TakeH3947 for yourself tenH6235 piecesH7168; for thisH3541 isH3541 whatH3541 the LordH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478 saysH559: ‘BeholdH2009, 49I am going to tearH7167 the kingdomH4467 awayH7167 from the handH3027 of SolomonH8010 and giveH5414 you tenH6235 tribesH7626 32(50but he shall haveH1961 oneH259 tribeH7626, for the sakeH4616 of My servantH5650 DavidH1732 and for the sakeH4616 of JerusalemH3389, 51the cityH5892 whichH834 I have chosenH977 from allH3605 the tribesH7626 of IsraelH3478), 33becauseH3282H834 they have abandonedH5800 Me, and 52have worshipedH2331 AshtorethH6252 the goddessH430 of the SidoniansH6722, 53ChemoshH3645 the godH430 of MoabH4124, and MilcomH4445 the godH430 of the sonsH1121 of AmmonH5983; and they have not walkedH1980 in My waysH1870, doingH6213 whatH3477 isH3477 rightH3477 in My sightH5869 and keeping My statutesH2708 and My ordinancesH4941, as his fatherH1 DavidH1732 did. 34Nevertheless I will not takeH3947 the wholeH3605 kingdomH4467 out of his handH3027, but I will makeH7896 him rulerH5387 allH3605 the daysH3117 of his lifeH2425, for the sakeH4616 of My servantH5650 DavidH1732 whomH834 I choseH977, whoH834 keptH8104 My commandmentsH4687 and My statutesH2708; 35but 54I will takeH3947 the kingdomH4410 from his son’sH1121 handH3027 and giveH5414 it to you; that is, tenH6235 tribesH7626. 36But 55to his sonH1121 I will giveH5414 oneH259 tribeH7626, 56soH4616 thatH4616 My servantH5650 DavidH1732 may alwaysH3605H3117 haveH1961 a lampH5215 beforeH6440 Me in JerusalemH3389, 57the cityH5892 whereH834H8033 I have chosenH977 for Myself to putH7760 My nameH8034. 37However I will takeH3947 you, and you shall reignH4427 over allH3605 that 58you desireH183, and you shall be kingH4428 overH5921 IsraelH3478. 38Then it shall be, that ifH518 you listenH8085 to allH3605 that I commandH6680 you and walkH1980 in My waysH1870, and doH6213 whatH3477 isH3477 rightH3477 in My sightH5869 by keepingH8104 My statutesH2708 and My commandmentsH4687, as My servantH5650 DavidH1732 didH6213, then 59I will be with you and 60buildH1129 you an enduringH539 houseH1004 as I builtH1129 for DavidH1732, and I will giveH5414 IsraelH3478 to you. 39So I will oppressH6031 the 61descendantsH2233 of DavidH1732 for thisH2088, but not alwaysH3605H3117.’” 40SolomonH8010 soughtH1245 therefore to putH4191 JeroboamH3379 toH4191 deathH4191; but JeroboamH3379 setH6965 outH6965 and fledH1272 to EgyptH4714 to 62ShishakH7895 kingH4428 of EgyptH4714, and he was in EgyptH4714 untilH5704 the deathH4194 of SolomonH8010.
The Death of Solomon
4163Now the restH3499 of the actsH1697 of SolomonH8010 and whateverH3605H834 he didH6213, and his wisdomH2451, are they not writtenH3789 in the BookH5612 of the ActsH1697 of SolomonH8010? 42So 64the timeH3117 that SolomonH8010 reignedH4427 in JerusalemH3389 overH5921 allH3605 IsraelH3478 was fortyH705 yearsH8141. 43Then SolomonH8010 6566layH7901 downH7901 with his fathersH1 and was buriedH6912 in the cityH5892 of his fatherH1 DavidH1732, and his sonH1121 67RehoboamH7346 reignedH4427 inH8478 his placeH8478.
