“I Will Stretch Out My Hand”

1Then the Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Mosesמֹשֶׁ֔הmo.ShehH4872, “Seeרְאֵ֛הre.'EhH7200,I makeנְתַתִּ֥יךָne.ta.Ti.khaH5414you asGodאֱלֹהִ֖ים'E.lo.HimH430to Pharaohלְפַרְעֹ֑הle.far.'OhH6547,and your brotherאָחִ֖יךָ'a.Chi.khaH251Aaronוְאַהֲרֹ֥ןve.'a.ha.RonH175shall be your prophetנְבִיאֶֽךָ׃ne.vi.'E.khaH5030.

2You shall speakתְדַבֵּ֔רte.da.BerH1696allכָּל־kol-H3605that I commandאֲצַוֶּ֑ךָּ'a.tza.Ve.kaH6680you, and your brotherאָחִ֙יךָ֙'a.Chi.khaH251Aaronוְאַהֲרֹ֤ןve.'a.ha.RonH175shall speakיְדַבֵּ֣רye.da.BerH1696to Pharaohפַּרְעֹ֔הpar.'OhH6547that he letH7971the sonsבְּנֵֽי־be.nei-H1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖לYis.ra.'ElH3478goוְשִׁלַּ֥חve.shi.LachH7971out of his landמֵאַרְצֽוֹ׃me.'ar.TzoH776.

3ButI will hardenאַקְשֶׁ֖ה'ak.ShehH7185Pharaoh’sפַּרְעֹ֑הpar.'OhH6547heartלֵ֣בlevH3820that I maymultiplyוְהִרְבֵּיתִ֧יve.hir.bei.TiH7235My signsאֹתֹתַ֛י'o.to.TaiH226and My wondersמוֹפְתַ֖יmof.TaiH4159in the landבְּאֶ֥רֶץbe.'E.retzH776of Egyptמִצְרָֽיִם׃mitz.Ra.yimH4714.

4WhenPharaohפַּרְעֹ֔הpar.'OhH6547does not listenיִשְׁמַ֤עyish.Ma'H8085to you, then I will layוְנָתַתִּ֥יve.na.ta.TiH5414My handיָדִ֖יya.DiH3027on Egyptבְּמִצְרָ֑יִםbe.mitz.Ra.yimH4714andbringוְהוֹצֵאתִ֨יve.ho.tze.TiH3318out My hostsצִבְאֹתַ֜יtziv.'o.TaiH6635,My peopleעַמִּ֤י'a.MiH5971the sonsבְנֵֽי־ve.nei-H1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵל֙Yis.ra.'ElH3478,from the landמֵאֶ֣רֶץme.'E.retzH776of Egyptמִצְרַ֔יִםmitz.Ra.yimH4714bygreatגְּדֹלִֽים׃ge.do.LimH1419judgmentsבִּשְׁפָטִ֖יםbish.fa.TimH8201.

5The EgyptiansH4714shall knowוְיָדְע֤וּve.ya.de.'UH3045that I am the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068, when Istretchבִּנְטֹתִ֥יbin.to.TiH5186out My handיָדִ֖יya.DiH3027on Egyptמִצְרָ֑יִםmitz.Ra.yimH4714and bringוְהוֹצֵאתִ֥יve.ho.tze.TiH3318out the sonsבְּנֵֽי־be.nei-H1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖לYis.ra.'ElH3478from their midstמִתּוֹכָֽם׃mi.to.KhamH8432.”

6So Mosesמֹשֶׁ֖הmo.ShehH4872and Aaronוְאַהֲרֹ֑ןve.'a.ha.RonH175didוַיַּ֥עַשׂvai.Ya.'asH6213it;as the Lordיְהוָ֛הYah.wehH3068commandedצִוָּ֧הtzi.VahH6680them, thusכֵּ֥ןkenH3651they didעָשֽׂוּ׃'a.SuH6213.

7Mosesוּמֹשֶׁה֙u.mo.ShehH4872waseightyשְׁמֹנִ֣יםshe.mo.NimH8084yearsH8141oldH1121and Aaronוְאַֽהֲרֹ֔ןve.'a.ha.RonH175eighty-threeוּשְׁמֹנִ֖יםu.she.mo.NimH8084,when they spokeבְּדַבְּרָ֖םbe.da.be.RamH1696to Pharaohפַּרְעֹֽה׃ פpar.'OhH6547.

Aaron’s Rod Becomes a Serpent

8Now the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068spokeוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Mosesמֹשֶׁ֥הmo.ShehH4872and Aaronאַהֲרֹ֖ן'a.ha.RonH175,sayingלֵאמֹֽר׃le.MorH559,

9“Whenכִּי֩kiH3588Pharaohפַּרְעֹה֙par.'OhH6547speaksיְדַבֵּ֨רye.da.BerH1696to you, sayingלֵאמֹ֔רle.MorH559, ‘Workתְּנ֥וּte.NuH5414a miracleמוֹפֵ֑תmo.FetH4159,’then you shall sayוְאָמַרְתָּ֣ve.'a.mar.TaH559to Aaronאַהֲרֹ֗ן'a.ha.RonH175, ‘Takeקַ֧חkachH3947your staffמַטְּךָ֛ma.te.KhaH4294and throwוְהַשְׁלֵ֥ךְve.hash.LekhH7993itdownH7993beforeלִפְנֵֽי־lif.nei-H6440Pharaohפַרְעֹ֖הfar.'OhH6547, thatit may becomeיְהִ֥יye.HiH1961a serpentלְתַנִּֽין׃le.ta.NinH8577.’”

10So Mosesמֹשֶׁ֤הmo.ShehH4872and Aaronוְאַהֲרֹן֙ve.'a.ha.RonH175cameוַיָּבֹ֨אvai.ya.Vo'H935to Pharaohפַּרְעֹ֔הpar.'OhH6547,and thusכֵ֔ןKhenH3651they didוַיַּ֣עַשׂוּvai.Ya.'a.suH6213justH3512as the Lordיְהוָ֑הYah.wehH3068had commandedצִוָּ֣הtzi.VahH6680;and Aaronאַהֲרֹ֜ן'a.ha.RonH175threwH7993his staffמַטֵּ֗הוּma.Te.huH4294downוַיַּשְׁלֵ֨ךְvai.yash.LekhH7993beforeH6440Pharaohפַרְעֹ֛הfar.'OhH6547andhis servantsעֲבָדָ֖יו'a.va.DavH5650, and itbecameוַיְהִ֥יvay.HiH1961a serpentלְתַנִּֽין׃le.ta.NinH8577.

11Then Pharaohפַּרְעֹ֔הpar.'OhH6547alsoגַּם־gam-H1571calledוַיִּקְרָא֙vai.yik.Ra'H7121for thewiseלַֽחֲכָמִ֖יםla.cha.kha.MimH2450menH2450and thesorcerersוְלַֽמְכַשְּׁפִ֑יםve.lam.kha.she.FimH3784,and they alsoגַם־gam-H1571, themagiciansחַרְטֻמֵּ֥יchar.tu.MeiH2748of Egyptמִצְרַ֛יִםmitz.Ra.yimH4714,didוַיַּֽעֲשׂ֨וּvai.ya.'a.SuH6213the sameכֵּֽן׃KenH3651withtheir secretH3909artsH3909.

12For eachH376oneאִ֣ישׁ'ishH376threwH7993downוַיַּשְׁלִ֙יכוּ֙vai.yash.Li.khuH7993his staffמַטֵּ֔הוּma.Te.huH4294and they turnedוַיִּהְי֖וּvai.yih.YuH1961into serpentsלְתַנִּינִ֑םle.ta.ni.NimH8577.But Aaron’sאַהֲרֹ֖ן'a.ha.RonH175staffמַטֵּֽה־ma.teh-H4294swallowedוַיִּבְלַ֥עvai.yiv.La'H1104up their staffsמַטֹּתָֽם׃ma.to.TamH4294.

13YetPharaoh’sפַּרְעֹ֔הpar.'OhH6547heartלֵ֣בlevH3820washardenedוַיֶּחֱזַק֙vai.ye.che.ZakH2388,and he did not listenשָׁמַ֖עsha.Ma'H8085to them, as the Lordיְהוָֽה׃ פYah.wehH3068had saidדִּבֶּ֥רdi.BerH1696.

Water Is Turned to Blood

14Then the Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Mosesמֹשֶׁ֔הmo.ShehH4872, “Pharaoh’sפַּרְעֹ֑הpar.'OhH6547heartלֵ֣בlevH3820isstubbornכָּבֵ֖דka.VedH3515;he refusesמֵאֵ֖ןme.'EnH3985to letH7971the peopleהָעָֽם׃ha.'AmH5971goלְשַׁלַּ֥חle.sha.LachH7971.

15Goלֵ֣ךְlekhH1980to Pharaohפַּרְעֹ֞הpar.'OhH6547in the morningבַּבֹּ֗קֶרba.Bo.kerH1242ashe is goingיֹצֵ֣אyo.Tze'H3318out to the waterהַמַּ֔יְמָהha.May.mahH4325,and stationH5324yourselfH5324to meetלִקְרָאת֖וֹlik.ra.ToH7122him on the bankשְׂפַ֣תse.FatH8193of the Nileהַיְאֹ֑רhay.'OrH2975;and you shall takeתִּקַּ֥חti.KachH3947in your handבְּיָדֶֽךָ׃be.ya.De.khaH3027the staffוְהַמַּטֶּ֛הve.ham.ma.TehH4294that was turnedנֶהְפַּ֥ךְneh.PakhH2015into a serpentלְנָחָ֖שׁle.na.ChashH5175.

16You shall sayוְאָמַרְתָּ֣ve.'a.mar.TaH559to him, ‘The Lordיְהוָ֞הYah.wehH3068,the Godאֱלֹהֵ֤י'e.lo.HeiH430of the Hebrewsהָעִבְרִים֙ha.'iv.RimH5680,sentH7971me to you, sayingלֵאמֹ֔רle.MorH559, “LetH7971My peopleעַמִּ֔י'a.MiH5971goH7971,that they may serveוְיַֽעַבְדֻ֖נִיve.ya.'av.Du.niH5647Me in the wildernessבַּמִּדְבָּ֑רba.mid.BarH4057.But beholdוְהִנֵּ֥הve.hi.NehH2009,you have not listenedשָׁמַ֖עְתָּsha.Ma'.taH8085untilעַד־'ad-H5704nowכֹּֽה׃KohH3541.”

17Thusכֹּ֚הkohH3541saysאָמַ֣ר'a.MarH559the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068, “By thisH2088you shall knowתֵּדַ֔עte.Da'H3045that I am the Lordיְהוָ֑הYah.wehH3068:beholdהִנֵּ֨הhi.NehH2009,I will strikeמַכֶּ֣ה׀ma.KehH5221the waterהַמַּ֛יִםha.Ma.yimH4325that is in the Nileבַּיְאֹ֖רbay.'OrH2975with the staffבַּמַּטֶּ֣הba.ma.TehH4294that is in my handבְּיָדִ֗יbe.ya.DiH3027, andit will be turnedוְנֶהֶפְכ֥וּve.ne.hef.KhuH2015to bloodלְדָֽם׃le.DamH1818.

18The fishוְהַדָּגָ֧הve.ha.da.GahH1710that are in the Nileבַּיְאֹ֛רbay.'OrH2975will dieתָּמ֖וּתta.MutH4191,and the Nileהַיְאֹ֑רhay.'OrH2975willbecomeH887foulH887,and the EgyptiansH4714willfindH3811difficultyH3811in drinkingלִשְׁתּ֥וֹתlish.TotH8354waterמַ֖יִםMa.yimH4325from the Nileהַיְאֹֽר׃ סhay.'OrH2975.”’”

19Then the Lordיְהוָ֜הYah.wehH3068saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Mosesמֹשֶׁ֗הmo.ShehH4872, “Sayאֱמֹ֣ר'e.MorH559to Aaronאַהֲרֹ֡ן'a.ha.RonH175, ‘Takeקַ֣חkachH3947your staffמַטְּךָ֣ma.te.KhaH4294andstretchוּנְטֵֽה־u.ne.teh-H5186out your handיָדְךָ֩ya.de.KhaH3027overעַל־'al-H5921the watersמֵימֵ֨יmei.MeiH4325of Egyptמִצְרַ֜יִםmitz.Ra.yimH4714,overעַֽל־'al-H5921their riversנַהֲרֹתָ֣ם׀na.ha.ro.TamH5104,overעַל־'al-H5921theirstreamsיְאֹרֵיהֶ֣םye.'o.rei.HemH2975,and overוְעַל־ve.'al-H5921their poolsאַגְמֵיהֶ֗ם'ag.mei.HemH98,and overוְעַ֛לve.'AlH5921allכָּל־kol-H3605their reservoirsמִקְוֵ֥הmik.VehH4723of waterמֵימֵיהֶ֖םmei.mei.HemH4325,that they may becomeH1961bloodדָ֑םDamH1818;and there will be bloodדָם֙damH1818throughout allבְּכָל־be.kholH3605the landאֶ֣רֶץ'E.retzH776of Egyptמִצְרַ֔יִםmitz.Ra.yimH4714, both in vessels ofwoodוּבָעֵצִ֖יםu.va.'e.TzimH6086and in vessels ofstoneוּבָאֲבָנִֽים׃u.va.'a.va.NimH68.’”

20So Mosesמֹשֶׁ֨הmo.ShehH4872and Aaronוְאַהֲרֹ֜ןve.'a.ha.RonH175didוַיַּֽעֲשׂוּ־vai.ya.'a.su-H6213evenכֵן֩khenH3651as the Lordיְהוָ֗הYah.wehH3068had commandedצִוָּ֣הtzi.VahH6680.And he liftedוַיָּ֤רֶםvai.Ya.remH7311upthe staffבַּמַּטֶּה֙ba.ma.TehH4294and struckוַיַּ֤ךְvai.YakhH5221the waterהַמַּ֙יִם֙ha.Ma.yimH4325that wasin the Nileבַּיְאֹ֔רbay.'OrH2975,in the sightלְעֵינֵ֣יle.'ei.NeiH5869of Pharaohפַרְעֹ֔הfar.'OhH6547and in the sightוּלְעֵינֵ֖יu.le.'ei.NeiH5869of his servantsעֲבָדָ֑יו'a.va.DavH5650, andallכָּל־kol-H3605the waterהַמַּ֥יִםha.Ma.yimH4325that wasin the Nileבַּיְאֹ֖רbay.'OrH2975was turnedוַיֵּהָֽפְכ֛וּvai.ye.ha.fe.KhuH2015to bloodלְדָֽם׃le.DamH1818.

21The fishוְהַדָּגָ֨הve.ha.da.GahH1710that werein the Nileבַּיְאֹ֥רbay.'OrH2975diedמֵ֙תָה֙me.tahH4191,and the Nileהַיְאֹ֔רhay.'OrH2975becameH887foulH887,so that the EgyptiansH4714couldיָכְל֣וּya.khe.LuH3201not drinkלִשְׁתּ֥וֹתlish.TotH8354waterמַ֖יִםMa.yimH4325from the Nileהַיְאֹ֑רhay.'OrH2975.And the bloodהַדָּ֖םha.DamH1818was through allבְּכָל־be.kholH3605the landאֶ֥רֶץ'E.retzH776of Egyptמִצְרָֽיִם׃mitz.Ra.yimH4714.

22But themagiciansחַרְטֻמֵּ֥יchar.tu.MeiH2748of Egyptמִצְרַ֖יִםmitz.Ra.yimH4714didוַיַּֽעֲשׂוּ־vai.ya.'a.su-H6213the sameכֵ֛ןkhenH3651with their secretH3909artsH3909;and Pharaoh’sפַּרְעֹה֙par.'OhH6547heartלֵב־lev-H3820washardenedוַיֶּחֱזַ֤קvai.ye.che.ZakH2388,and he did not listenשָׁמַ֣עsha.Ma'H8085to them, as the Lordיְהוָֽה׃Yah.wehH3068had saidדִּבֶּ֥רdi.BerH1696.

23Then Pharaohפַּרְעֹ֔הpar.'OhH6547turnedוַיִּ֣פֶןvai.Yi.fenH6437and wentוַיָּבֹ֖אvai.ya.Vo'H935into his houseבֵּית֑וֹbei.ToH1004with noוְלֹא־ve.lo'-H3808concernשָׁ֥ת לִבּ֖וֹshat li.BoH7896 H3820evenגַּם־gam-H1571for thisH2088.

24So allכָל־khol-H3605the EgyptiansH4714dugוַיַּחְפְּר֧וּvai.yach.pe.RuH2658aroundסְבִיבֹ֥תse.vi.VotH5439the Nileהַיְאֹ֖רhay.'OrH2975for waterמַ֣יִםMa.yimH4325to drinkלִשְׁתּ֑וֹתlish.TotH8354,for they couldיָֽכְלוּ֙ya.khe.LuH3201not drinkלִשְׁתֹּ֔תlish.TotH8354of the waterמִמֵּימֵ֖יmi.mei.MeiH4325of the Nileהַיְאֹֽר׃hay.'OrH2975.
