Shun Idolatry

1“Ifכִּֽי־ki-H3588a prophetנָבִ֔יאna.Vi'H5030orא֖וֹ'oH176a dreamerחֹלֵ֣םcho.LemH2492of dreamsחֲל֑וֹםcha.LomH2472arisesיָק֤וּםya.KumH6965amongבְּקִרְבְּךָ֙be.kir.be.ChaH7130you and givesוְנָתַ֥ןve.na.TanH5414you a signא֖וֹת'otH226orא֥וֹ'oH176a wonderמוֹפֵֽת׃mo.FetH4159,

2and the signH226or the wonderH4159comesוּבָ֤אu.Va'H935true, concerning whichאֲשֶׁר־'a.Sher-H834he spokeדִּבֶּ֥רdi.BerH1696to you, sayingלֵאמֹ֑רle.MorH559, ‘Let us goנֵֽלְכָ֞הne.le.KhahH1980afterאַחֲרֵ֨י'a.cha.ReiH310otherאֲחֵרִ֛ים'a.che.RimH312godsאֱלֹהִ֧ים'E.lo.HimH430(whomאֲשֶׁ֥ר'a.SherH834you have not knownיְדַעְתָּ֖םye.da'.TamH3045)and let us serveוְנָֽעָבְדֵֽם׃ve.Na.'a.ve.DemH5647them,’

3you shall not listenתִשְׁמַ֗עtish.Ma'H8085to the wordsדִּבְרֵי֙div.ReiH1697of that prophetהַנָּבִ֣יאha.na.Vi'H5030orא֛וֹ'oH176that dreamerחוֹלֵ֥םcho.LemH2492of dreamsהַחֲל֖וֹםha.cha.LomH2472;for the Lordיְהוָ֤הYah.wehH3068your GodH430istestingמְנַסֶּ֞הme.na.SehH5254you to findH3045out ifyou loveאֹֽהֲבִים֙'o.ha.VimH157the Lordיְהוָ֣הYah.wehH3068your GodH430with allבְּכָל־be.kholH3605your heartלְבַבְכֶ֖םle.vav.KhemH3824and with allוּבְכָל־u.ve.Khol-H3605your soulנַפְשְׁכֶֽם׃naf.she.KhemH5315.

4You shall followאַחֲרֵ֨י תֵּלֵ֖כוּ'a.cha.Rei te.Le.khuH310 H1980the LordH3068your GodH430and fearתִירָ֑אוּti.Ra.'uH3372Him; and you shall keepתִּשְׁמֹ֙רוּ֙tish.Mo.ruH8104His commandmentsמִצְוֹתָ֤יוmitz.vo.TavH4687,listenH8085to His voiceוּבְקֹל֣וֹu.ve.ko.LoH6963,serveתַעֲבֹ֖דוּta.'a.Vo.duH5647Him, andclingתִדְבָּקֽוּן׃tid.ba.KunH1692to Him.

5But that prophetוְהַנָּבִ֣יאve.ha.na.Vi'H5030orא֣וֹ'oH176that dreamerחֹלֵם֩cho.LemH2492of dreamsהַחֲל֨וֹםha.cha.LomH2472shall beputיוּמָ֗תyu.MatH4191to deathH4191,becauseכִּ֣יkiH3588he hascounseledדִבֶּר־di.ber-H1696rebellionסָ֠רָהSa.rahH5627againstעַל־'al-H5921the LordH3068your GodH430who broughtהַמּוֹצִ֥יאha.mo.Tzi'H3318you from the landמֵאֶ֣רֶץme.'E.retzH776of Egyptמִצְרַ֗יִםmitz.Ra.yimH4714and redeemedוְהַפֹּֽדְךָ֙ve.ha.po.de.KhaH6299you from the houseמִבֵּ֣יתmi.BeitH1004ofslaveryעֲבָדִ֔ים'a.va.DimH5650,to seduceלְהַדִּֽיחֲךָ֙le.ha.di.cha.KhaH5080you from the wayהַדֶּ֔רֶךְha.De.rekhH1870in whichאֲשֶׁ֧ר'a.SherH834the LordH3068your GodH430commandedצִוְּךָ֛tzi.ve.KhaH6680you to walkH1980.So you shall purgeוּבִֽעַרְתָּ֥u.vi.'ar.TaH1197the evilהָרָ֖עha.Ra'H7451from amongמִקִּרְבֶּֽךָ׃mi.kir.Be.chaH7130you.

6“IfH3588your brotherאָחִ֣יךָ'a.Chi.khaH251,your mother’sאִ֠מֶּךָ'I.me.khaH517sonבֶן־ven-H1121,orH176your sonבִנְךָ֨vin.KhaH1121orH176daughterבִתְּךָ֜vi.te.KhaH1323,orH176the wifeאֵ֣שֶׁת'E.shetH802you cherishחֵיקֶ֗ךָchei.Ke.chaH2436,orH176your friendרֵֽעֲךָ֛re.'a.KhaH7453whoH834is as your own soulכְּנַפְשְׁךָ֖ke.naf.she.KhaH5315,enticeיְסִֽיתְךָ֡ye.si.te.KhaH5496you secretlyבַּסֵּ֣תֶרba.Se.terH5643,sayingלֵאמֹ֑רle.MorH559, ‘Let us goH1980and serveוְנַֽעַבְדָה֙ve.na.'av.DahH5647otherאֲחֵרִ֔ים'a.che.RimH312godsH430’ (whomH834neitherH3808you norH3808your fathersוַאֲבֹתֶֽיךָ׃va.'a.vo.Tei.khaH1have knownיָדַ֔עְתָּya.Da'.taH3045,

7of the godsH430of the peoplesהָֽעַמִּ֗יםha.'a.MimH5971whoH834are aroundסְבִיבֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔םse.vi.Vo.tei.KhemH5439you, nearהַקְּרֹבִ֣יםha.ke.ro.VimH7138you orH176farהָרְחֹקִ֣יםha.re.cho.KimH7350from you, from one endמִקְצֵ֥הmik.TzehH7097of the earthH776to the other endקְצֵ֥הke.TzehH7097),

8you shall not yieldתֹאבֶ֣הto.VehH14to him or listenתִשְׁמַ֖עtish.Ma'H8085to him;and your eyeעֵֽינְךָ֙'ei.ne.KhaH5869shall not pityתָח֤וֹסta.ChosH2347him, norH3808shall you spareתַחְמֹ֥לtach.MolH2550or concealתְכַסֶּ֖הte.kha.SehH3680him.

9But you shall surelyהָרֹג֙ha.RogH2026killתַּֽהַרְגֶ֔נּוּta.har.Ge.nuH2026him;your handיָֽדְךָ֛ya.de.KhaH3027shall be firstבָרִֽאשׁוֹנָ֖הva.ri.sho.NahH7223against him to putלַהֲמִית֑וֹla.ha.mi.ToH4191him to deathH4191,and afterwardsבָּאַחֲרֹנָֽה׃ba.'a.cha.ro.NahH314the handוְיַ֥דve.YadH3027of allכָּל־kol-H3605the peopleהָעָ֖םha.'AmH5971.

10So you shall stoneוּסְקַלְתּ֥וֹu.se.kal.ToH5619himto deathH4191becauseH3588he has soughtבִקֵּ֗שׁvi.KeshH1245to seduceלְהַדִּֽיחֲךָ֙le.ha.di.cha.KhaH5080you from the Lordיְהוָ֣הYah.wehH3068your Godאֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ'e.lo.Hei.khaH430who broughtהַמּוֹצִיאֲךָ֛ha.mo.tzi.'a.KhaH3318you out from the landמֵאֶ֥רֶץme.'E.retzH776of Egyptמִצְרַ֖יִםmitz.Ra.yimH4714,out of the houseמִבֵּ֥יתmi.BeitH1004ofslaveryעֲבָדִֽים׃'a.va.DimH5650.

11Thenallוְכָל־ve.kholH3605Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לYis.ra.'ElH3478will hearיִשְׁמְע֖וּyish.me.'UH8085and be afraidוְיִֽרָא֑וּןve.yi.ra.'UnH3372,and will neverוְלֹֽא־ve.lo'-H3808againיוֹסִ֣פוּyo.Si.fuH3254doלַעֲשׂ֗וֹתla.'a.SotH6213suchהַזֶּ֖הha.ZehH2088a wickedהָרָ֛עha.Ra'H7451thingכַּדָּבָ֥רka.da.VarH1697amongבְּקִרְבֶּֽךָ׃ סbe.kir.Be.chaH7130you.

12“Ifכִּֽי־ki-H3588you hearH8085in oneבְּאַחַ֣תbe.'a.ChatH259of your citiesעָרֶ֗יךָ'a.Rei.khaH5892,whichאֲשֶׁר֩'a.SherH834the Lordיְהוָ֨הYah.wehH3068your Godאֱלֹהֶ֜יךָ'e.lo.Hei.khaH430is givingנֹתֵ֥ןno.TenH5414you to liveלָשֶׁ֥בֶתla.She.vetH3427in, anyonesayingלֵאמֹֽר׃le.MorH559that

13some worthlessבְלִיַּ֙עַל֙ve.li.Ya.'alH1100menH376have goneיָצְא֞וּya.tze.'UH3318out from amongמִקִּרְבֶּ֔ךָmi.kir.Be.chaH7130you and have seducedוַיַּדִּ֛יחוּvai.ya.Di.chuH5080the inhabitantsH3427of their cityH5892,sayingH559, ‘Let us goנֵלְכָ֗הne.le.KhahH1980and serveוְנַעַבְדָ֛הve.na.'av.DahH5647otherאֲחֵרִ֖ים'a.che.RimH312godsH430’ (whomH834you have not knownיְדַעְתֶּֽם׃ye.da'.TemH3045),

14then you shall investigateוְדָרַשְׁתָּ֧ve.da.rash.TaH1875and searchוְחָקַרְתָּ֧ve.cha.kar.TaH2713out and inquireוְשָׁאַלְתָּ֖ve.sha.'al.TaH7592thoroughlyהֵיטֵ֑בhei.TevH3190.Ifוְהִנֵּ֤הve.hi.NehH2009it is trueאֱמֶת֙'e.MetH571andthe matterהַדָּבָ֔רha.da.VarH1697establishedנָכ֣וֹןna.KhonH3559that thisH2088abominationהַתּוֹעֵבָ֥הha.to.'e.VahH8441has been doneנֶעֶשְׂתָ֛הne.'es.TahH6213amongH7130you,

15you shall surelyהַכֵּ֣הha.KehH5221strikeתַכֶּ֗הta.KehH5221the inhabitantsיֹֽשְׁבֵ֛יyo.she.VeiH3427of that cityהָעִ֥ירha.'IrH5892with the edgeלְפִי־le.fi-H6310of the swordחָ֑רֶבCha.revH2719,utterlyH2763destroyingהַחֲרֵ֨םha.cha.RemH2763it and allכָּל־kol-H3605that is in it and its cattleבְּהֶמְתָּ֖הּbe.hem.TahH929with the edgeלְפִי־le.fi-H6310of the swordחָֽרֶב׃Cha.revH2719.

16Then you shall gatherתִּקְבֹּץ֮tik.BotzH6908allH3605its bootyשְׁלָלָ֗הּshe.la.LahH7998into the middleתּ֣וֹךְTokhH8432of its openרְחֹבָהּ֒re.cho.VahH7339squareH7339and burnוְשָׂרַפְתָּ֨ve.sa.raf.TaH8313the cityH5892and allH3605its bootyשְׁלָלָהּ֙she.la.LahH7998with fireבָאֵ֜שׁva.'EshH784as a wholeכָּלִ֔ילka.LilH3632burntH3632offeringH3632to the Lordלַיהוָ֖הla.Yah.wehH3068your Godאֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ'e.lo.Hei.khaH430; and it shall be aruinתֵּ֣לtelH8510foreverעוֹלָ֔םo.LamH5769.It shall neverלֹ֥אlo'H3808be rebuiltתִבָּנֶ֖הti.ba.NehH1129.

17NothingH3808from that whichH2764is put underH2764the banH2764shall clingיִדְבַּ֧קyid.BakH1692to your handבְּיָדְךָ֛be.ya.de.KhaH3027,in orderלְמַעַן֩le.ma.'AnH4616that the LordH3068may turnיָשׁ֨וּבya.ShuvH7725fromHis burningמֵחֲר֣וֹןme.cha.RonH2740angerאַפּ֗וֹ'a.PoH639andshowוְנָֽתַן־ve.na.tan-H5414mercyרַחֲמִים֙ra.cha.MimH7356to you, and haveH7355compassionוְרִֽחַמְךָ֣ve.ri.cham.KhaH7355on you andmake you increaseוְהִרְבֶּ֔ךָve.hir.Be.khaH7235,justH3152as He has swornנִשְׁבַּ֖עnish.Ba'H7650to your fathersלַאֲבֹתֶֽיךָ׃la.'a.vo.Tei.khaH1,
