Naaman Cured of Leprosy

(Luke 17:11–19)

1Now NaamanH5283, the commanderH8269 of the armyH6635 of the kingH4428 of AramH758, wasH1961 a greatH1419 manH376 in his master’sH113 sightH6440 and highly regardedH5375H6440, forH3588 through him the LORDH3068 had givenH5414 victoryH8668 to AramH758. And he wasH1961 a mightyH1368 manH376 of valorH2428, but he was a leperH6879.1

2At this time the ArameansH758 had gone outH3318 in bandsH1416 and had takenH7617 a youngH6996 girlH5291 from the landH776 of IsraelH3478, and she was servingH1961H6440 Naaman’sH5283 wifeH802. 3She saidH559 toH413 her mistressH1404, “If onlyH305 my masterH113 would go to the prophetH6440H5030 whoH834 is in SamariaH8111, he would cureH622 himH853 of his leprosyH6883.”

4And Naaman wentH935 and toldH5046 his masterH113H559 whatH2063 the girlH5291 from the landH776 of IsraelH3478 had saidH1696.

5“Go nowH1980H935,” saidH559 the kingH4428 of AramH758, “and I will send you withH7971 a letterH5612 toH413 the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478.”

So Naaman departedH1980, takingH3947 with himH3027 tenH6235 talentsH3603 of silverH3701,2 sixH8337 thousandH505 shekels of goldH2091,3 and tenH6235 setsH2487 of clothingH899.

6And the letterH5612 that he tookH935 toH413 the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 statedH559: “WithH6258 thisH2088H413 letterH5612 I am sendingH7971 my servantH5650 NaamanH5283, so that you may cure himH622 of his leprosyH6883.”

When the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 readH7121 the letterH5612, he toreH7167 his clothesH899 and askedH559, “Am IH589 GodH430, killingH4191 and giving lifeH2421, thatH3588 thisH2088 man expectsH7971 meH413 to cureH622 a leperH376H6883? Surely you canH3045H4994 seeH7200 thatH3588 heH1931 is seeking a quarrelH579 with me!”

8NowH1961 when ElishaH477 the manH376 of GodH430 heardH8085 thatH3588 the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 had tornH7167 his clothesH899, he sentH7971 a message toH413 the kingH4428H559: “WhyH4100 have you tornH7167 your clothesH899? PleaseH4994 let the man comeH935 to meH413, and he will knowH3045 thatH3588 there isH3426 a prophetH5030 in IsraelH3478.”

9So NaamanH5283 cameH935 with his horsesH5483 and chariotsH7393 and stoodH5975 at the doorH6607 of Elisha’sH477 houseH1004.

10Then ElishaH477 sentH7971 himH413 a messengerH4397, who saidH559, “GoH1980 and wash yourselfH7364 sevenH7651 timesH6471 in the JordanH3383, and your fleshH1320 will be restoredH7725, and you will be cleanH2891.”

11But NaamanH5283 went awayH1980 angryH7107, sayingH559H2009, “I thought thatH559 he would surely come outH3318, standH5975 and callH7121 on the nameH8034 of the LORDH3068 his GodH430, and waveH5130 his handH3027 overH413 the spotH4725 to cureH622 my leprosyH6879. 12Are notH3808 the AbanahH71 and PharparH6554, the riversH5104 of DamascusH1834, betterH2896 than allH3605 the watersH4325 of IsraelH3478? Could I notH3808 have washedH7364 in them and been cleansedH2891?” So he turnedH6437 and went awayH1980 in a rageH2534.

13Naaman’s servants, howeverH5650, approached himH5066 and saidH1696, “My fatherH1, if the prophetH5030 had toldH1696 youH413 to do some greatH1419 thingH1697, would you notH3808 have doneH6213 it? How much more, thenH637, whenH3588 he tellsH559 youH413, ‘WashH7364 and be cleansedH2891’?”

14So Naaman went downH3381 and dipped himselfH2881 in the JordanH3383 sevenH7651 timesH6471, according to the wordH1697 of the manH376 of GodH430, and his fleshH1320 was restoredH7725 and became likeH1320 that of a littleH6996 childH5288, and he was cleanH2891.

Gehazi’s Greed and Leprosy

15Then NaamanH1931 and allH3605 his attendantsH4264H935 went backH7725 toH413 the manH376 of GodH430, stoodH5975 before himH6440, and declaredH559, “NowH4994 I knowH3045 for sureH2009 thatH3588 there is noH369 GodH430 in allH3605 the earthH776 exceptH3588H518 in IsraelH3478. SoH6258 pleaseH4994 acceptH3947 a giftH1293 fromH854 your servantH5650.”

16But Elisha repliedH559, “As surely as the LORDH3068 livesH2416, before whomH6440 I standH5975, I will notH518 accept itH3947.” And although Naaman urgedH6484 him to accept itH3947, he refusedH3985.

17“If you will notH3808,” saidH559 NaamanH5283, “pleaseH4994 let me, your servantH5650, be givenH5414 as much soilH127 as a pairH6776 of mulesH6505 can carryH4853. ForH3588 your servantH5650 will neverH3808 againH5750 makeH6213 a burnt offeringH5930 or a sacrificeH2077 to any otherH312 godH430 butH518 the LORDH3068. 18Yet may the LORDH3068 forgiveH5545 your servantH5650 thisH2088 one thingH1697: When my masterH113 goes intoH935 the templeH1004 of RimmonH7417 to worshipH7812 thereH8033, and heH1931 leansH8172 onH5921 my armH3027, and I bow downH7812 in the templeH1004 of RimmonH7417, mayH4494 the LORDH3068 forgiveH5545 your servantH5650 in thisH2088 matterH1697.”

19“GoH1980 in peaceH7965,” saidH559 Elisha.

But after Naaman had traveledH1980H854 a short distanceH3530, 20GehaziH1522, the servantH5288 of ElishaH477 the manH376 of GodH430, saidH559, “LookH2009, my masterH113 has sparedH2820 thisH2088 ArameanH761, NaamanH5283, by not acceptingH3947H3027 whatH834 he broughtH935. As surely as the LORDH3068H3588H518 livesH2416, I will runH7323 after himH310 and getH3947 somethingH3972 from himH854.”

21So GehaziH1522 pursuedH7291 NaamanH5283. And when NaamanH5283 sawH7200 him runningH7323 toward himH310, he got downH5307 fromH5921 the chariotH4818 to meet himH7122 and askedH559, “Is everything all rightH7965?”

22“Everything is all rightH7965,” Gehazi repliedH559. “My masterH113 has sent meH7971 to sayH559, ‘LookH2009, twoH8147 young menH5288 from the sonsH1121 of the prophetsH5030 have just nowH6258H2088 comeH935 to meH413 from the hill countryH2022 of EphraimH669. PleaseH4994 giveH5414 them a talentH3603 of silverH37014 and twoH8147 setsH2487 of clothingH899.’”

23But NaamanH5283 insistedH559, “PleaseH2974, takeH3947 two talentsH3603.” And he urgedH6555 Gehazi to accept them. Then he tied upH6696 two talentsH3603 of silverH3701 in twoH8147 bagsH2754 along with twoH8147 setsH2487 of clothingH899 and gave themH5414 toH413 twoH8147 of his servantsH5288, who carried themH5375 ahead of GehaziH6440.

24When Gehazi cameH935 toH413 the hillH6076, he tookH3947 the gifts fromH3027 the servants and stored themH6485 in the houseH1004. Then he dismissedH7971 the menH582, and they departedH1980.

25When GehaziH1931 went inH935 and stoodH5975 beforeH413 his masterH113, ElishaH477 askedH559 himH413, “GehaziH1522, whereH575 have you been?”

“Your servantH5650 did notH3808 goH1980 anywhereH575,” he repliedH559.

26But Elisha questioned himH559H413, “Did notH3808 my spiritH3820 goH1980 with you whenH834 the manH376 got downH2015 fromH5921 his chariotH4818 to meet youH7122? Is this the timeH6256 to acceptH3947 moneyH3701H3947 and clothingH899, olive grovesH2132 and vineyardsH3754, sheepH6629 and oxenH1241, menservantsH5650 and maidservantsH8198? 27Therefore, the leprosyH6883 of NaamanH5283 will clingH1692 to you and your descendantsH2233 foreverH5769!”

And as Gehazi leftH3318 his presenceH6440, he was leprousH6879—as white as snowH7950.
