Jehu Anointed King of Israel
1Now ElishaH477 the prophetH5030 summonedH7121 oneH259 of the sonsH1121 of the prophetsH5030 and saidH559 to him, “Tuck your cloakH2296 under your beltH4975,1 takeH3947 thisH2088 flaskH6378 of oilH8081, and goH1980 to Ramoth-gileadH7418H1568. 2When you arriveH935H8033, lookH7200H8033 for JehuH3058 sonH1121 of JehoshaphatH3092, the sonH1121 of NimshiH5250. Go inH935, get him awayH6965 fromH8432 his companionsH251, and takeH935 himH853 to an inner roomH2315. 3Then takeH3947 the flaskH6378 of oilH8081, pourH3332 it onH5921 his headH7218, and declareH559, ‘This is whatH3541 the LORDH3068 saysH559: I anointH4886 you kingH4428 overH413 IsraelH3478.’ Then openH6605 the doorH1817 and runH5127. Do notH3808 delayH2442!”
4So the youngH5288 prophetH5030 wentH1980 to Ramoth-gileadH7418H1568, 5and when he arrivedH935, the armyH2428 commandersH8269 were sittingH3427 thereH2009. “I have a messageH1697 for youH413, commanderH8269,” he saidH559.
“ForH413 whichH4310 of usH3605?” askedH559 JehuH3058.
“For youH413, commanderH8269,” he repliedH559.
6So Jehu got upH6965 and wentH935 into the houseH1004, where the young prophet pouredH3332 the oilH8081 onH413 his headH7218 and declaredH559, “This is whatH3541 the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, saysH559: ‘I anoint youH4886 kingH4428 overH413 the LORD’sH3068H413 peopleH5971 IsraelH3478. 7And you are to strike downH5221 the houseH1004 of your masterH113 AhabH256, so that I may avengeH5358 the bloodH1818 of My servantsH5650 the prophetsH5030 and the bloodH1818 of allH3605 the servantsH5650 of the LORDH3068 shed by the handH3027 of JezebelH348. 8The wholeH3605 houseH1004 of AhabH256 will perishH6, and I will cut offH3772 from AhabH256 every maleH8366H7023,2 both slaveH6113 and freeH5800, in IsraelH3478. 9I will makeH5414 the houseH1004 of AhabH256 like the housesH1004 of JeroboamH3379 sonH1121 of NebatH5028 and BaashaH1201 sonH1121 of AhijahH281. 10AndH853 on the plotH2506 of ground at JezreelH3157 the dogsH3611 will devourH398 JezebelH348, and there will be no oneH369 to buryH6912 her.’”
Then the young prophet openedH6605 the doorH1817 and ranH5127.
11When JehuH3058 went outH3318 toH413 the servantsH5650 of his masterH113, they askedH559, “Is everything all rightH7965? WhyH4069 did thisH2088 madmanH7696 comeH935 to youH413?”
“YouH859 knowH3045 his kindH376 and their babbleH7879,” he repliedH559H413.
12“That is a lieH8267!” they saidH559. “TellH5046 us nowH4994!”
So Jehu answeredH559, “He talkedH559 to meH413 about thisH2063 and thatH2063, sayingH559, ‘This is whatH3541 the LORDH3068 saysH559: I anointH4886 you kingH4428 overH413 IsraelH3478.’”
13QuicklyH4116, each manH376 tookH3947 his garmentH899 and putH7760 it underH8478 Jehu onH413 the bareH1634 stepsH4609. Then they blewH8628 the ram’s hornH7782 and proclaimedH559, “JehuH3058 is kingH4427!”
Jehu Kills Joram and Ahaziah
(2 Chronicles 22:8–9)
14Thus JehuH3058 sonH1121 of JehoshaphatH3092, the sonH1121 of NimshiH5250, conspiredH7194 againstH413 JoramH3141.
(Now JoramH3141 and allH3605 IsraelH3478 had beenH1961 defendingH8104 Ramoth-gileadH7418H1568 againstH6440 HazaelH2371 kingH4428 of AramH758, 15but KingH4428 JoramH30883 had returnedH7725 to JezreelH3157 to recoverH7495 fromH4480 the woundsH4347 he had sufferedH5221 at the hands of the ArameansH761 in the battleH3898 againstH854 HazaelH2371 their kingH4428H758.)
So JehuH3058 saidH559, “IfH518H3426 you commanders wish to make me kingH5315, then do notH408 let anyoneH3318 escapeH6412 fromH4480 the cityH5892 to goH1980 and tellH5046 it in JezreelH3157.”
16Then JehuH3058 got into his chariotH7392 and wentH1980 to JezreelH3157, becauseH3588 JoramH3141 was laid upH7901 thereH8033. And AhaziahH274 kingH4428 of JudahH3063 had gone downH3381 to seeH7200 him.
17Now the watchmanH6822 standingH5975 onH5921 the towerH4026 in JezreelH3157 sawH7200 Jehu’sH3058 troopsH8229 approachingH935, and he called outH559, “IH589 seeH7200 a company ofH8229 troops!”
“ChooseH3947 a riderH7395,” JoramH3088 commandedH559. “Send him outH7971 to meet themH7122 and askH559, ‘Have you come in peaceH7965?’”
18So a horsemanH7392H5483 rode offH1980 to meet JehuH7122 and saidH559, “This is whatH3541 the kingH4428 asksH559: ‘Have you come in peaceH7965?’”
“WhatH4100 do you know about peaceH7965?” JehuH3058 repliedH559. “Fall inH5437H413 behind meH310.”
And the watchmanH6822H559 reportedH5046, “The messengerH4397 reachedH935H5704 themH1992, but he is notH3808 coming backH7725.”
19So the king sent outH7971 a secondH8145 horsemanH7392H5483, who wentH935 to themH413 and saidH559, “This is whatH3541 the kingH4428 asksH559: ‘Have you come in peaceH7965?’”
“WhatH4100 do you know about peaceH7965?” JehuH3058 repliedH559. “Fall inH5437H413 behind meH310.”
20Again the watchmanH6822H559 reportedH5046, “He reachedH935H5704 themH413, but he is notH3808 coming backH7725. And the charioteerH4491 is driving likeH4491 JehuH3058 sonH1121 of NimshiH5250H35884—he is drivingH5090 like a madmanH7697!”
21“HarnessH631!” JoramH3088 shoutedH559, and they harnessedH631 his chariotH7393.
Then JoramH3088 kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 and AhaziahH274 kingH4428 of JudahH3063 set outH3318, eachH376 in his own chariotH7393, and metH3318H7122 JehuH3058H4672 on the propertyH2513 of NabothH5022 the JezreeliteH3158.
When JoramH3088 sawH7200 JehuH3058, he askedH559, “Have you come in peaceH7965, JehuH3058?”
“HowH4100 can there beH5704 peaceH7965,” he repliedH559, “as long asH7227 the idolatryH21835 and witchcraftH3785 of your motherH517 Jezebel aboundH348?”
23JoramH3088H3027 turned aroundH20156 and fledH5127, calling outH559 toH413 AhaziahH274, “TreacheryH4820, AhaziahH274!”
24Then JehuH3058 drewH4390H3027 his bowH7198 and shotH5221 JoramH3088 betweenH996 the shouldersH2220. The arrowH2678 piercedH3318 his heartH3820, and he slumped downH3766 in his chariotH7393.
25And Jehu saidH559 toH413 BidkarH920 his officerH7969, “Pick him upH5375 and throw himH7993 into the fieldH2513H7704 of NabothH5022 the JezreeliteH3158. ForH3588 remember thatH2142 when youH859 and IH589 were ridingH7392 togetherH6776 behindH310 his fatherH1 AhabH256, the LORDH3068 lifted upH5375 thisH2088 burdenH4853 against himH5921: 26‘As surelyH518H3808 as I sawH7200 the bloodH1818 of NabothH5022 and the bloodH1818 of his sonsH1121 yesterdayH570, declaresH5002 the LORDH3068, so will I repayH7999 you on thisH2063 plot of groundH2513, declaresH5002 the LORDH3068.’ Now thenH6258, according to the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068, pick him upH5375 and throw himH7993 on the plotH2513 of ground.”
27When KingH4428 AhaziahH274 of JudahH3063 sawH7200 this, he fledH5127 up the roadH1870 toward Beth-hagganH1004H1588.
And JehuH3058 pursued himH7291H310, shoutingH559, “ShootH5221 himH853 tooH1571!”
So they shot Ahaziah inH413 his chariotH4818 on the AscentH4608 of GurH1483,7 near IbleamH2991, and he fledH5127 to MegiddoH4023 and diedH4191 thereH8033. 28Then his servantsH5650 carried him by chariotH7392 to JerusalemH3389 and buriedH6912 himH853 with his fathersH1 in his tombH6900H5973 in the CityH5892 of DavidH1732.
29(In the eleventhH259H6240H8141 yearH8141 of JoramH3141 sonH1121 of AhabH256, AhaziahH274 had become kingH4427 overH5921 JudahH3063.)
Jezebel’s Violent Death
30Now when JehuH3058 arrivedH935 in JezreelH3157, JezebelH348 heardH8085 of it. So she paintedH7760H6320 her eyesH5869, adornedH3190 her headH7218, and looked downH8259 fromH1157 a windowH2474. 31And as JehuH3058 enteredH935 the gateH8179, she askedH559, “Have you come in peaceH7965, O ZimriH2174, murdererH2026 of your masterH113?”8
32He looked upH5375H6440 atH413 the windowH2474 and called outH559, “WhoH4310 is on my sideH854? WhoH4310?”
And twoH8147 or threeH7969 eunuchsH5631 looked downH8259 at himH413.
33“Throw her downH8058!” yelledH559 Jehu.
So they threw her downH8058, and her bloodH1818 splatteredH5137 onH413 the wallH7023 and onH413 the horsesH5483 as they trampled her underfootH7429.
34Then Jehu went inH935 and ateH398 and drankH8354. “Take care ofH6485H4994 thisH2063 cursedH779 woman,” he saidH559, “and bury herH6912, forH3588 sheH1931 was the daughterH1323 of a kingH4428.”
35But when they went outH1980 to bury herH6912, they foundH4672 nothingH3808 butH3588H518 her skullH1538, her feetH7272, and the palmsH3709 of her handsH3027.
36So they went backH7725 and toldH5046 Jehu, who repliedH559, “ThisH1931 is the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068, whichH834 He spokeH1696 throughH3027 His servantH5650 ElijahH452 the TishbiteH8664H559: ‘On the plotH2506 of ground at JezreelH3157 the dogsH3611 will devourH398 the fleshH1320 of JezebelH348. 37And Jezebel’sH348 bodyH5038 will lieH1961 like dungH1828 in the fieldH5921H6440H7704 on the plotH2506 of ground at JezreelH3157, so thatH834 no oneH3808 can sayH559: ThisH2063 is JezebelH348.’9”
