Amaziah Reigns in Judah
(2 Chronicles 25:1–4)
1In the secondH8147 yearH8141 of the reignH4428 of JehoashH31011 sonH1121 of JehoahazH3099 over IsraelH3478, AmaziahH558 sonH1121 of JoashH3101 became kingH4427H4428 of JudahH3063. 2He wasH1961 twenty-fiveH6242H2568 years oldH1121H8141 when he became kingH4427, and he reignedH4427 in JerusalemH3389 twenty-nineH6242H8672 yearsH8141. His mother’sH517 nameH8034 was JehoaddanH3086; she was fromH4480 JerusalemH3389. 3And he didH6213 what was rightH3477 in the eyesH5869 of the LORDH3068, butH7535 notH3808 as his fatherH1 David had doneH1732. He didH6213 everythingH3605 asH834 his fatherH1 JoashH3101 had doneH6213.
4NeverthelessH7535, the high placesH1116 were notH3808 taken awayH5493, and the peopleH5971 continuedH5750 sacrificingH2076 and burning incenseH6999 on the high placesH1116.
As soon asH834 the kingdomH4467 was firmlyH2388 in his graspH3027, Amaziah executedH5221 the servantsH5650 who had murderedH5221 his fatherH1 the kingH4428. 6YetH853 he did notH3808 put the sonsH1121 of the murderersH5221 to deathH4191, but acted according to what is writtenH3789 in the BookH5612 of the LawH8451 of MosesH4872, whereH834 the LORDH3068H559 commandedH6680: “FathersH1 must notH3808 be put to deathH4191 forH5921 their childrenH1121, and childrenH1121 must notH3808 be put to deathH4191 forH5921 their fathersH1; eachH376 is to dieH4191 for his own sinH2399.”2
7AmaziahH1931 struck downH5221 10,000H6235H505 EdomitesH123 in the ValleyH1516 of SaltH4417. He tookH8610 SelaH5554 in battleH4421 and calledH7121 it JoktheelH3371, which is its nameH8034 toH5704 this veryH2088 dayH3117.
Jehoash Defeats Amaziah
(2 Chronicles 25:17–24)
8ThenH227 AmaziahH558 sentH7971 messengersH4397 toH413 the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 JehoashH3060 sonH1121 of JehoahazH3059, the sonH1121 of JehuH3058. “ComeH1980, let us meetH7200 face to faceH6440,” he saidH559.
9But JehoashH3060 kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 repliedH7971 toH413 AmaziahH558 kingH4428 of JudahH3063: “A thistleH2336 in LebanonH3844 sentH7971 a message toH413 a cedarH730 in LebanonH3844, sayingH559, ‘GiveH5414 your daughterH1323 to my sonH1121 in marriageH802.’ Then a wildH7704 beastH2416 in LebanonH3844 came alongH5674 and trampledH7429 the thistleH2336. 10You have indeed defeatedH5221 EdomH123, and your heartH3820 has become proudH5375. GloryH3513 in that and stayH3427 at homeH1004. WhyH4100 should you stir upH1624 troubleH7451 so that you fallH5307—youH859 and JudahH3063 with youH5973?”
11But AmaziahH558 would notH3808 listenH8085, so JehoashH3060 kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 advancedH5927. HeH1931 and KingH4428 AmaziahH558 of JudahH3063 faced each otherH7200H6440 at Beth-shemeshH1053 in JudahH3063. 12And JudahH3063 was routedH5062 beforeH6440 IsraelH3478, and every manH376 fledH5127 to his homeH168.
There at Beth-shemeshH1053, JehoashH3060 kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 capturedH8610 AmaziahH558 kingH4428 of JudahH3063, the sonH1121 of JoashH3060, the sonH1121 of AhaziahH274.
Then Jehoash wentH935 to JerusalemH3389 and broke downH6555 the wallH2346 of JerusalemH3389 from the EphraimH669 GateH8179 toH5704 the CornerH6438 GateH8179—a section of fourH702 hundredH3967 cubitsH520.3 14He tookH3947 allH3605 the goldH2091 and silverH3701 andH853 allH3605 the articlesH3627 foundH4672 in the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068 and in the treasuriesH214 of the royalH4428 palaceH1004, as well as some hostagesH1121H8594. Then he returnedH7725 to SamariaH8111.
Jeroboam II Succeeds Jehoash in Israel
15As for the restH3499 of the actsH1697 of JehoashH3060, along with his accomplishmentsH834H6213, his mightH1369, and howH834 he waged warH3898 againstH5973 AmaziahH558 kingH4428 of JudahH3063H3808H1992, are they not writtenH3789 inH5921 the BookH5612 of the ChroniclesH1697H3117 of the KingsH4428 of IsraelH3478?
16And JehoashH3060 restedH7901 withH5973 his fathersH1 and was buriedH6912 in SamariaH8111 withH5973 the kingsH4428 of IsraelH3478. And his sonH1121 JeroboamH3379 reignedH4427 in his placeH8478.
The Death of Amaziah
(2 Chronicles 25:25–28)
17AmaziahH558 sonH1121 of JoashH3101 kingH4428 of JudahH3063 livedH2421 for fifteenH2568H6240 yearsH8141 afterH310 the deathH4194 of JehoashH3060 sonH1121 of JehoahazH3059 kingH4428 of IsraelH3478. 18As for the restH3499 of the actsH1697 of AmaziahH558, are they notH3808H1992 writtenH3789 inH5921 the BookH5612 of the ChroniclesH1697H3117 of the KingsH4428 of JudahH3063?
19And conspiratorsH7195 plottedH7194 against AmaziahH5921 in JerusalemH3389, and he fledH5127 to LachishH3923. But men were sentH7971 after himH310 to LachishH3923, and they killed himH4191 thereH8033. 20They carried him backH5375 onH5921 horsesH5483 and buried himH6912 in JerusalemH3389 withH5973 his fathersH1 in the CityH5892 of DavidH1732.
Azariah Succeeds Amaziah in Judah
(2 Chronicles 26:1–2)
21Then allH3605 the peopleH5971 of JudahH3063 tookH3947 AzariahH5838,4 whoH1931 was sixteenH8337H6240 years oldH1121H8141, and made him kingH4427 in place ofH8478 his fatherH1 AmaziahH558. 22Azariah was the one who rebuiltH1129 ElathH3595 and restored itH7725 to JudahH3063 afterH310 KingH4428 Amaziah restedH7901 withH5973 his fathersH1.
Jeroboam II Reigns in Israel
23In the fifteenthH2568H6240 yearH8141 of the reignH4428 of AmaziahH558 sonH1121 of JoashH3101 over JudahH3063, JeroboamH3379 sonH1121 of JehoashH3101 became kingH4427H4428 of IsraelH3478, and he reigned in SamariaH8111 forty-oneH705H259 yearsH8141. 24And he didH6213 evilH7451 in the sightH5869 of the LORDH3068 and did notH3808 turn awayH5493 from allH3605 the sins thatH2403 JeroboamH3379 sonH1121 of NebatH5028 had caused IsraelH3478 to commitH2398.
25This Jeroboam restoredH7725 the boundaryH1366 of IsraelH3478 from Lebo-hamathH935H2574 toH5704 the SeaH3220 of the ArabahH6160,6 according to the wordH1697 thatH834 the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, had spokenH1696 throughH3027 His servantH5650 JonahH3124 sonH1121 of AmittaiH573, the prophetH5030 from Gath-hepherH1662. 26ForH3588 the LORDH3068 sawH7200 that the afflictionH6040 of the IsraelitesH3478, both slaveH6113 and freeH5800, was veryH3966 bitterH4784. There was noH369 one to helpH5826 IsraelH3478, 27and since the LORDH3068 had saidH1696 that He would not blot outH3808H4229 the nameH8034 of IsraelH3478 from underH8478 heavenH8064, He saved themH3467 by the handH3027 of JeroboamH3379 sonH1121 of JehoashH3101.
28As for the restH3499 of the actsH1697 of JeroboamH3379, along with allH3605 his accomplishmentsH834H6213 and mightH1369, and howH834 he waged warH3898 and recoveredH7725 both DamascusH1834 andH853 HamathH2574 for IsraelH3478 from JudahH3063, are they not writtenH3789 inH5921 the BookH5612 of the ChroniclesH1697H3117 of the KingsH4428 of IsraelH3478?
29And JeroboamH3379 restedH7901 withH5973 his fathersH1H5973,7 the kingsH4428 of IsraelH3478. And his sonH1121 ZechariahH2148 reignedH4427 in his placeH8478.
