Athaliah and Joash

(2 Chronicles 22:10–12)

1When AthaliahH6271 the motherH517 of AhaziahH274 sawH7200 thatH3588 her sonH1121 was deadH4191, she proceededH6965 to annihilateH6 allH3605 the royalH4467 heirsH2233. 2But JehoshebaH30891 daughterH1323 of KingH4428 JoramH3141,2 the sisterH269 of AhaziahH274, tookH3947 JoashH3101 sonH1121 of AhaziahH274 and stole him awayH1589 from amongH8432 the sonsH1121 of the kingH4428 who were being murderedH4191. She put him and his nurseH3243 in a bedroomH2315H4296 to hideH5641 himH853 fromH6440 AthaliahH6271, and he was notH3808 killedH4191.

3And Joash remainedH1961 hiddenH2244 withH854 his nurse in the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068 for sixH8337 yearsH8141 while AthaliahH6271 ruledH4427H5921 the landH776.

Joash Anointed King of Judah

(2 Chronicles 23:1–11)

4Then in the seventhH7637 yearH8141, JehoiadaH3077 sent forH7971H3947 the commandersH8269 of hundredsH3967, the CaritesH3746,3 and the guardsH7323, and had them broughtH935 into the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068. There he madeH3772 a covenantH1285 with them and put them under oathH7650H854.

He showedH7200 themH853 the king’sH4428 sonH1121 5and commanded themH6680H559, “ThisH2088H1697 is whatH834 you are to doH6213: A thirdH7992 of you who come on dutyH935 on the SabbathH7676 shall guardH8104H4931 the royalH4428 palaceH1004, 6a thirdH7992 shall be at the gateH8179 of SurH5495, and a thirdH7992 at the gateH8179 behindH310 the guardsH7323. You are to take turnsH4535 guardingH8104 the templeH1004— 7the twoH8147 divisionsH3027 that would go off dutyH3318 on the SabbathH7676 are to guardH8104 the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068 forH413 the kingH4428. 8You must surroundH5362H5921 the kingH4428H5439 with weaponsH3627 in handH3027, and anyoneH376 who approachesH935H413 the ranksH7713 must be put to deathH4191. You must stayH1961 closeH854 to the kingH4428 wherever he goesH3318H935.”

9So the commandersH8269 of hundredsH3967 didH6213 everythingH3605 thatH834 JehoiadaH3077 the priestH3548 had orderedH6680. Each of themH376 tookH3947 his menH582—those coming on dutyH935 on the SabbathH7676 andH5973 those going off dutyH3318H7676—and cameH935 toH413 JehoiadaH3077 the priestH3548. 10Then the priestH3548 gaveH5414 to the commandersH8269 of hundredsH3967 the spearsH2595 andH853 shieldsH7982 of KingH4428 DavidH1732 fromH834 the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068. 11And the guardsH7323H376 stoodH5975 with weaponsH3627 in handH3027 surroundingH5921H5439 the kingH4428 by the altarH4196 and the templeH1004, from the southH3233 sideH3802 toH5704 the northH8042 sideH3802 of the templeH1004.

12Then Jehoiada brought outH3318 the king’sH4428 sonH1121, putH5414 the crownH5145 on himH5921, presented him with the TestimonyH5715, and proclaimed him kingH4427. They anointed himH4886, and the people clappedH5221 their handsH3709 and declaredH559, “Long liveH2421 the kingH4428!”

The Death of Athaliah

(2 Chronicles 23:12–15)

13When AthaliahH6271 heardH8085 the noiseH6963 from the guardsH7323 and the peopleH5971, she went outH935 toH413 the peopleH5971 in the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068. 14And she looked outH7200 and sawH2009 the kingH4428 standingH5975 byH5921 the pillarH5982, according to the customH4941. The officersH8269 and trumpetersH2689 were besideH413 the kingH4428, and allH3605 the peopleH5971 of the landH776 were rejoicingH8056 and blowingH8628 trumpetsH2689.

Then AthaliahH6271 toreH7167 her clothesH899 and screamedH7121, “TreasonH7195! TreasonH7195!”

15And JehoiadaH3077 the priestH3548 orderedH6680 the commandersH8269 of hundredsH3967 in charge ofH6485 the armyH2428, “Bring her outH3318 between the ranksH7713,4 and put toH4191 the swordH2719 anyone who followsH935 herH310.” ForH3588 the priestH3548 had saidH559, “She must notH408 be put to deathH4191 in the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068.”

16So they seizedH7760 Athaliah as she reachedH935H1870 the horsesH5483’ entranceH3996 to the palace groundsH4428H1004, and thereH8033 she was put to deathH4191.

Jehoiada Restores the Worship of the LORD

(2 Chronicles 23:16–21)

17Then JehoiadaH3077 madeH3772 a covenantH1285 betweenH996 the LORDH3068 andH996 the kingH4428H996 and the peopleH5971 that they would beH1961 the LORD’sH3068 peopleH5971. He also made a covenant betweenH996 the kingH4428 andH996 the peopleH5971.

18So allH3605 the peopleH5971 of the landH776 wentH935 to the templeH1004 of BaalH1168 and tore it downH5422. They smashed the altarsH4196 and idolsH6754 to piecesH7665H3190, and they killedH2026 MattanH4977 the priestH3548 of BaalH1168 in front ofH6440 the altarsH4196.

And Jehoiada the priestH3548 postedH7760 guardsH6486 forH5921 the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068. 19He took with himH3947 the commandersH8269 of hundredsH3967, the CaritesH3746, the guardsH7323, and allH3605 the peopleH5971 of the landH776, and they broughtH3381 the king downH4428 from the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068 and enteredH935 the royalH4428 palaceH1004 by wayH1870 of the GateH8179 of the GuardsH7323.

Then Joash took his seatH3427 onH5921 the royalH4428 throneH3678, 20and allH3605 the peopleH5971 of the landH776 rejoicedH8055. And the cityH5892 was quietH8252, because AthaliahH6271 had been put toH4191 the swordH2719 at the royalH4428 palaceH1004.

21JoashH30605 was sevenH7651 years oldH1121H8141 when he became kingH4427.
