Hezekiah’s Illness and Recovery

(2 Chronicles 32:24–31; Isaiah 38:1–8)

1In thoseH1992 daysH3117 HezekiahH2396 became mortallyH4191 illH2470. The prophetH5030 IsaiahH3470 sonH1121 of AmozH531 cameH935 to himH413 and saidH559, “This is whatH3541 the LORDH3068 saysH559: ‘Put your houseH1004 in orderH6680, forH3588 youH859 are about to dieH4191; you will notH3808 recoverH2421.’”

2Then Hezekiah turnedH5437 his faceH6440 toH413 the wallH7023 and prayedH6419 toH413 the LORDH3068, sayingH559, 3“PleaseH577, O LORDH3068, rememberH2142H4994 howH834 I have walkedH1980 before YouH6440 faithfullyH571 and with wholeheartedH3824 devotionH8003; I have doneH6213 what is goodH2896 in Your sightH5869.” And HezekiahH2396H1065 weptH1058 bitterlyH1419.

BeforeH3808 IsaiahH3470 had leftH3318 the middleH8484 courtyardH5892,1 the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068 cameH1961 to himH413, sayingH559, 5“Go backH7725 and tellH559H413 HezekiahH2396 the leaderH5057 of My peopleH5971 that this is whatH3541 the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of your fatherH1 DavidH1732, saysH559: ‘I have heardH8085 your prayerH8605; I have seenH7200 your tearsH1832. I will surely healH2005H7495 you. On the thirdH7992 day from nowH3117 you will go upH5927 to the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068. 6I will addH3254 fifteenH2568H6240 yearsH8141 toH5921 your lifeH3117. And I will deliver youH5337 andH853 thisH2063 cityH5892 from the handH3709 of the kingH4428 of AssyriaH804. I will defendH1598H5921 thisH2063 cityH5892 for My sakeH4616 and for the sake ofH4616 My servantH5650 DavidH1732.’”

7Then IsaiahH3470 saidH559, “PrepareH3947 a poulticeH1690 of figsH8384.” So they brought itH3947 and appliedH7760 it toH5921 the boilH7822, and Hezekiah recoveredH2421.

8Now HezekiahH2396H413 had askedH559 IsaiahH3470, “WhatH4100 will be the signH226 thatH3588 the LORDH3068 will healH7495 me and that I will go upH5927 to the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068 on the thirdH7992 dayH3117?”

9And IsaiahH3470 had repliedH559, “ThisH2088 will be a signH226 to you fromH854 the LORDH3068 thatH3588 HeH3068 will doH6213 whatH834 He has promisedH1696: Would you like the shadowH6738 to goH1980 forward tenH6235 stepsH4609, orH518 backH7725 tenH6235 stepsH4609?”

10“It is easyH7043 for the shadowH6738 to lengthenH5186 tenH6235 stepsH4609,” answeredH559 HezekiahH2396, “but notH3808H3588 for itH6738 to goH7725 backH322 tenH6235 stepsH4609.”

11So IsaiahH3470 the prophetH5030 called outH7121 toH413 the LORDH3068, and He broughtH7725 the shadowH6738H4609 backH322 the tenH6235 stepsH4609 it had descendedH3381 on the stairwayH4609 of AhazH271.

Hezekiah Shows His Treasures

(Isaiah 39:1–8)

12At thatH1931 timeH6256 Merodach-baladanH12552 sonH1121 of BaladanH1081 kingH4428 of BabylonH894 sentH7971 lettersH1255H5612 and a giftH4503 toH413 HezekiahH2396, forH3588 he had heardH8085 aboutH3588 Hezekiah’sH2396 illnessH2470. 13And HezekiahH2396 receivedH8085 the envoys and showed themH7200 all that wasH3605 in his treasureH5238 houseH1004—the silverH3701, the goldH2091, the spicesH1314, and the preciousH2896 oilH8081, as well as his armoryH1004H3627—allH3605 thatH834 was foundH4672 in his storehousesH214. There wasH1961 nothingH3808H1697 in his palaceH1004 or in allH3605 his dominionH4475 thatH834 HezekiahH2396 did notH3808 show themH7200.

14Then the prophetH5030 IsaiahH3470 wentH935 toH413 KingH4428 HezekiahH2396 and askedH559, “WhereH370 did thoseH428 menH582 come fromH935H413, and whatH4100 did they sayH559 to youH413?”

“They cameH935 from a distantH7350 landH776,” HezekiahH2396 repliedH559, “from BabylonH894.”

15“WhatH4100 have they seenH7200 in your palaceH1004?” Isaiah askedH559.

“They have seenH7200 everythingH3605 in my palaceH1004,” answeredH559 HezekiahH2396. “There is nothingH3808H1961 among my treasuresH214 thatH834 I did notH3808 show themH7200.”

16Then IsaiahH3470 saidH559 toH413 HezekiahH2396, “HearH8085 the wordH1697 of the LORDH3068: 17The timeH3117 will surelyH2009 comeH935 when everythingH3605 in your palaceH1004 and all thatH834 your fathersH1 have stored upH686 untilH5704 thisH2088 dayH3117 will be carried offH5375 to BabylonH894. NothingH3808H1697 will be leftH3498, saysH559 the LORDH3068. 18And some ofH4480 your descendantsH1121, your ownH834 flesh and bloodH3318, will be taken awayH3947 to beH1961 eunuchsH5631 in the palaceH1964 of the kingH4428 of BabylonH894.”

19But HezekiahH2396 saidH559 toH413 IsaiahH3470, “The wordH1697 of the LORDH3068 thatH834 you have spokenH1696 is goodH2896.” For he thoughtH559, “Will there notH3808 at leastH518 beH1961 peaceH7965 and securityH571 in my lifetimeH3117?”

Manasseh Succeeds Hezekiah

20As for the restH3499 of the actsH1697 of HezekiahH2396, along with allH3605 his mightH1369 and howH834 he constructedH6213 the poolH1295 and the tunnelH85853 to bringH935 waterH4325 into the cityH5892H3808H1992, are they not writtenH3789 inH5921 the BookH5612 of the ChroniclesH1697H3117 of the KingsH4428 of JudahH3063?

21And HezekiahH2396 restedH7901 withH5973 his fathersH1, and his sonH1121 ManassehH4519 reignedH4427 in his placeH8478.
