The Shunammite’s Land Restored
1Now ElishaH477 had saidH1696 toH413 the womanH802 whoseH834 sonH1121H559 he had restored to lifeH2421, “AriseH6965, youH859 and your householdH1004; goH1980 and live as a foreignerH1481 whereverH834 you canH1481. ForH3588 the LORDH3068 has decreed thatH7121 a seven-yearH7651H8141 famineH7458 will comeH935 toH413 the landH776.”
2So the womanH802 had proceededH6965 to doH6213 as the manH376 of GodH430H1980 had instructedH1697. And sheH1931 and her householdH1004 lived as foreignersH1481 for sevenH7651 yearsH8141 in the landH776 of the PhilistinesH6430.
At the endH7097 of sevenH7651 yearsH8141, when the womanH802 returnedH7725 from the landH776 of the PhilistinesH6430, she wentH3318 toH413 the kingH4428 to appealH6817 forH413 her houseH1004 andH413 her landH7704.
4Now the kingH4428 had been speakingH1696 toH413 GehaziH1522, the servantH5288 of the manH376 of GodH430, sayingH559, “PleaseH4994 relateH5608 to me allH3605 the great thingsH1419 ElishaH477 has doneH6213.”
5AndH1961 GehaziH1931 was tellingH5608 the kingH4428 howH834 Elisha had brought the deadH4191 back to lifeH2421. Just thenH2009 the womanH802 whoseH834 sonH1121 Elisha had revivedH2421 came to appealH6817 toH413 the kingH4428 forH5921 her houseH1004 andH5921 her landH7704. So GehaziH1522 saidH559, “My lordH113 the kingH4428, thisH2063 is the womanH802, and thisH2088 is the sonH1121 ElishaH477 restored to lifeH2421.”
6When the kingH4428 askedH7592 the womanH802, she confirmed itH5608. So the kingH4428 appointedH5414 for her anH259 officerH5631, sayingH559, “RestoreH7725 allH3605 thatH834 was hers, along with allH3605 the proceedsH8393 of the fieldH7704 from the dayH3117 that she leftH5800 the countryH776 untilH5704 nowH6258.”
Hazael Murders Ben-hadad
7Then ElishaH477 cameH935 to DamascusH1834 while Ben-hadadH1130 kingH4428 of AramH758 was sickH2470, and the king was toldH5046, “The manH376 of GodH430H5704 has comeH935 hereH2008.”
8So the kingH4428 saidH559 toH413 HazaelH2371, “TakeH3947 a giftH4503 in your handH3027, goH1980 to meetH7122 the manH376 of GodH430, and inquireH1875 ofH853 the LORDH3068 through himH853, ‘Will I recoverH2421 from thisH2088 illnessH2483?’”
9So HazaelH2371 wentH1980 to meet ElishaH7122, takingH3947 with himH3027 a giftH4503 of fortyH705 camel loadsH4853H1581 of everyH3605 good thingH2898 from DamascusH1834. And he went inH935 and stoodH5975 before himH6440 and saidH559, “Your sonH1121 Ben-hadadH1130 kingH4428 of AramH758 has sent meH7971H413 to askH559, ‘Will I recoverH2421 from thisH2088 illnessH2483?’”
10ElishaH477 answeredH559H413, “GoH1980 and tell himH559H3808, ‘You will surely recoverH2421.’ But the LORDH30681 has shown meH7200 thatH3588 in fact he will dieH4191.”
11Elisha fixedH5975 his gazeH6440 steadilyH7760 on him untilH5704 Hazael became uncomfortableH954. Then the manH376 of GodH430 began to weepH1058.
12“WhyH4069 is my lordH113 weepingH1058?” askedH559 HazaelH2371.
“BecauseH3588 I knowH3045 the evilH7451 you will doH6213 to the IsraelitesH1121H3478,” Elisha repliedH559. “You will setH7971 fireH784 to their fortressesH4013, killH2026 their young menH970 with the swordH2719, dash their little onesH5768 to piecesH7376, and rip openH1234 their pregnant womenH2030.”
13“ButH3588 how couldH4100 your servantH5650, a mere dogH3611, doH6213 suchH2088 a monstrousH1419 thingH1697?” saidH559 HazaelH2371.
And ElishaH477 answeredH559, “The LORDH3068 has shown meH7200 that youH853 will be kingH4428 overH5921 AramH758.”
14So Hazael leftH1980 ElishaH477 and wentH935 toH413 his masterH113, who askedH559 him, “WhatH4100 did ElishaH477 sayH559 to you?”
And he repliedH559, “He told meH559 that you would surely recoverH2421.” 15ButH1961 the next dayH4283 Hazael tookH3947 a thick clothH4346, dippedH2881 it in waterH4325, and spreadH6566 it overH5921 the king’s faceH6440.
So Ben-hadad diedH4191, and HazaelH2371 reignedH4427 in his placeH8478.
Jehoram Reigns in Judah
(2 Chronicles 21:1–7)
16In the fifthH2568 yearH8141 of the reignH4428 of JoramH3141 sonH1121 of AhabH256 over IsraelH3478, JehoramH3088 sonH1121 of JehoshaphatH3092 succeeded his fatherH4427H3092H4428H3063 as kingH4428 of JudahH3063. 17Jehoram wasH1961 thirty-twoH7970H8147 years oldH1121H8141 when he became kingH4427, and he reignedH4427 in JerusalemH3389 eightH8083 yearsH8141.
18And Jehoram walkedH1980 in the waysH1870 of the kingsH4428 of IsraelH3478, just asH834 the houseH1004 of AhabH256 had doneH6213. ForH3588 he marriedH802 a daughterH1323 of AhabH256 and didH6213 evilH7451 in the sightH5869 of the LORDH3068.
19Yet for the sakeH4616 of His servantH5650 DavidH1732, the LORDH3068 was unwillingH3808H14 to destroyH7843 JudahH3063, sinceH834 He had promisedH559 to maintainH5414 a lampH5216 for David and his descendantsH1121 foreverH3605H3117.
Edom and Libnah Rebel
(2 Chronicles 21:8–11)
20In the daysH3117 of Jehoram,2 EdomH123 rebelledH6586 againstH8478 the handH3027 of JudahH3063 and appointedH4427 their ownH5921 kingH4428. 21So JehoramH31413 crossed overH5674 to ZairH6811 withH5973H1961 allH3605 his chariotsH7393. When the EdomitesH123 surroundedH5437 himH413 andH853 his chariotH7393 commandersH8269, heH1931 rose upH6965 and attackedH5221 by nightH3915. His troops, howeverH5971, fledH5127 to their homesH168.
22So toH5704 thisH2088 dayH3117 EdomH123 has been in rebellionH6586 againstH8478 the hand ofH3027 JudahH3063. LikewiseH227, LibnahH3841 rebelledH6586 at the sameH1931 timeH6256.
23As for the restH3499 of the actsH1697 of JehoramH3141, along with allH3605 his accomplishmentsH834H6213, are theyH1992 notH3808 writtenH3789 inH5921 the bookH5612 of the ChroniclesH1697H3117 of the KingsH4428 of JudahH3063?
24And JehoramH3141 restedH7901 withH5973 his fathersH1 and was buriedH6912 withH5973 them in the CityH5892 of DavidH1732. And his sonH1121 AhaziahH274 reignedH4427 in his placeH8478.
Ahaziah Reigns in Judah
(2 Chronicles 22:1–7)
25In the twelfthH8147H6240H8141 yearH8141 of the reignH4428 of JoramH3141 sonH1121 of AhabH256 over IsraelH3478, AhaziahH274 sonH1121 of JehoramH3088 became kingH4427H4428 of JudahH3063. 26AhaziahH274 was twenty-twoH6242H8147 years oldH1121H8141 when he became kingH4427, and he reignedH4427 in JerusalemH3389 oneH259 yearH8141. His mother’sH517 nameH8034 was AthaliahH6271, the granddaughterH1323 of OmriH6018 kingH4428 of IsraelH3478.
27And Ahaziah walkedH1980 in the waysH1870 of the houseH1004 of AhabH256 and didH6213 evilH7451 in the sightH5869 of the LORDH3068 like the houseH1004 of AhabH256, forH3588 heH1931 was a son-in-lawH2860 of the houseH1004 of AhabH256.
28Then Ahaziah wentH1980 withH854 JoramH3141 sonH1121 of AhabH256 to fightH4421 againstH5973 HazaelH2371 kingH4428 of AramH758 at Ramoth-gileadH7418H1568, and the ArameansH761 woundedH5221 JoramH3141. 29So KingH4428 JoramH3141 returnedH7725 to JezreelH3157 to recoverH7495 fromH4480 the woundsH4347 thatH834 the ArameansH761 had inflicted on himH5221 at RamahH74144 when he foughtH3898 againstH854 HazaelH2371 kingH4428 of AramH758. Then AhaziahH274 sonH1121 of JehoramH3088 kingH4428 of JudahH3063 went downH3381 to JezreelH3157 to visitH7200 JoramH3141 sonH1121 of AhabH256, becauseH3588 Joram had been woundedH2470.
